  • Pipelining Gauss Seidel Method for Analysis of Discrete Time Cellular Neural Networks

    This paper describes a pipelining universal system of discrete time cellular neural networks (DTCNNs). The new relaxation-based algorithm which is called a Pipelining Gauss Seidel (PGS) method is used to solve the CNN state equations in pipelining. In the systolic system of N processor elements {PEi}, each PEi performs the convolusional computation (CC) of all cells and the preceding PEi-1 performs the CC of all cells taking precedence over it by the precedence interval number p. The expected maximum number of PE's for the speeding up is given by n/p where n means the number of cells. For its application, the encoding and decoding process of moving images is simulated.

    The throughput performance of a slotted, non-persistent Idle-Signal Casting Multiple Access (ICMA) protocol under the effects of various combinations of Rayleigh fading, lognormal shadowing, and spatial distribution of mobile users is studied. The opposing effects of propagation impairments on the performance of the protocol through simultaneously increasing the probability of receiver capture and attenuation of the received signal power level are demonstrated.

    Go-Back-N automatic repeat request (GBN ARQ) and Stop-and wait (SW) ARQ schemes are one of fundamental and widely used error control procedures for data communication and computer communication systems. The throughput and delay performances of these ARQ schemes have been analyzed for a random error channel, which could not applicable for a radio channel, for example. In this paper, considering the correlated, noisy channel, we derive the exact formula for the delay of a frame in GBN and SW ARQ schemes. First, the delay formula for the discrete time M[x]/G/1 queueing system with starter. Next, the virtual service time of a frame is found in terms of the decay factor of a two-state Markov chain. As a result, it is shown that the performance of the delay is improved with the larger decay factor.

    The demand for mobile communication services is rapidly increasing, because the mobile communication service is synonymy of an ideal communication style realizing communication in anytime, anywhere and with anyone. The development of economic and social activities is a primary factor of the increasing demand for mobile communication services. The demand stimulates the development of technology in mobile communication including personal communication services. Thus mobile communication has been one of the most active research in communications in the last several years. There exist various problems to which graph & network theory is applicable in mobile communication services (for example, channel assignment algorithm in cellular system, protocol in modile communication networks and traffic control in mobile communication ). A model of a cellular system has been formulated using a graph and it is known that the channel assignment problem is equivalent to the coloring problem of graph theory. Recently, two types of coloring problems on graphs or networks related to the channel assignment problem were proposed. Mainly, we introduce these coloring problems and show some results on these problems in this paper.

    This paper gives field experimental results on 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation/time division multiple access (16QAM/TDMA) and trellis coded 16QAM/TDMA systems for land mobile communications in order to evaluate its capability of achieving large capacity and high quality data transmission. Pilot symbol aided space diversity and symbol timing synchronization based on maximum likelihood (ML) estimation are applied to both 16QAM/TDMA and trellis coded 16QAM/TDMA to improve transmission quality. For the trellis coded 16QAM/TDMA, trellis coding with Viterbi decoding and 2-frame symbol interleaving are further employed. The field experiments were conducted in the Tokyo metropolitan area of Japan. The results show that 16QAM/TDMA and trellis coded 16QAM/TDMA are practical modulation/access schemes for land mobile communication systems.

  • A Group Demodulator Employing Multi-Symbol Chirp Fourier Transform

    This paper proposes a group demodulator that employs multi-symbol chirp Fourier transform to demodulate pulse shaped and time asynchronous signals without degradation; this is not possible with conventional group demodulators based on chirp Fourier transform. Computer simulation results show that the bit error rate degradation of the proposed group demodulator at BER=10-3 is less than 0.3dB even when a root Nyquist (α=0.5) filter is used as the transmission pulse shaping filter and the symbol timing offset between the desired channel and the chirp sweep is half the symbol period.

    Stored channel simulation for mobile radio channel can be the common base of the development of future world wide personal radio communication systems, especially for high bit-rate digital system. This paper proposes a mobile radio channel database which is suitable for the laboratory channel simulation using a simple stored channel simulator, also proposed by the author. The database enables the establishment of a mobile radio channel database containing worldwide channel data in a few discs of compact disc.

    This paper presents a discrete Fourier analyzer using analog VLSI technology. An analog current-mode technique is employed for implementing it by a regular array structure based on the straight-forward discrete Fourier transform (DFT) algorithm. The basic components are 1-dimensional (1-D) analog current-mode multiplier array for fixed coefficient multiplication, two-dimensional (2-D) analog switch array and wired summations. The proposed scheme can process speedily N-point DFT in a time proportional to N. Possibility of the realization of the analog DFT VLSI based on 1 µm technology is discussed from the viewpoints of precision, speed, area, and power dissipation. In the case of 1024-point DFT, the standard deviation of the total error is estimated to be about 2%, the latency, or processing time is about 110 µs, and the signal sample rate based on a pipeline manner is about 4.7 MHz. A prototype MOS integrated circuit of the 16-point multiplier array has been implemented and a typical operation using the multiplier array has been confirmed.

    This paper proposes a semi-autonomous frame synchronization scheme for a TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access)-TDD (Time Division Duplexing) personal communication system to realize accurate frame synchronization in a simple manner. The proposed scheme selects specific adjacent base stations by the station indicator (SID), carries out high resolution frame timing control, and compensates the propagation delay between base stations by using geographical data. This autonomously synchronizes all base stations to each other. Computer simulation and analysis results confirm the accurate and stable TDMA frame synchronization of all base stations even in fading environments.

    Personal Handy Phone (PHP), the Japanese digital cordless telephone system is being developed. The 32kbits/s ADPCM (Adaptive Differential Pulse Code Modulation) codec has been standardized for PHP. This paper describes firstly, the advanced algorithms of a Voice Activity Detection (VAD) function that reduces power dissipation of a digital cordless telephone terminal, secondly, a comfort noise generator operates in conjunction with the VAD and finally, a transmission error control based on the use of the prediction coefficients generated in the ADPCM codec. These proposed algorithms function in the low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) environment of personal radio communications. The quality of the reconstructed speech after the process is influenced by the VAD decision errors (false detection when no voice is present, or no detection when voice is present) , the similarity of the generated comfort noise to the actual background noise, and the transmission quality. The simulation results of the performance achieved by these algorithms are shown and required loading of the computation are also given.

  • Integration of Voice and Data in Wireless Information Networks with Data Steal into Voice Multiple Access

    In this paper, we propose DSVMA (Data Steal into Voice Multiple Access) scheme for integration of voice and data in wireless information networks. By using speech activity detectors and effective downstream control signals, DSVMA enables data terminals to transmit multi-packet messages when voice terminals are in silent periods. The S-G (throughput versus offered load) performance of the DSVMA system and the blocking probabilities of both the second generation systems and the DSVMA systems are evaluated by the static analysis. A dynamic analysis of a system with finite number of terminals is also presented using an approximate Markov analysis method. Some numerical examples are given in the paper. As a result, it is shown that DSVMA can improve the channel utility efficiency of a circuit-switched TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) wireless communication system and is directly applicable for second generation wireless information systems.

    Advanced Traveller Information Systems (ATIS) and Advanced Traffic Management Systems (ATMS) require real-time traffic data to observe and control the trafic flow. Still, there is a lack of proficient traffic monitoring systems. One method to collect such data is using particular equipped vehicles, called probes, transmitting experienced travel times to base stations which in turn are connected to a traffic control center. In this paper we analyse the performance of a radio network for collecting real-time traffic data from probes. The results reveal that random transmission of traffic reports is a (spectrum) efficient, inexpensive and flexible method for collecting road traffic data that can provide reliable traffic monitoring.

    Distributed algorithms that entail successive rounds of message exchange are called decentralized consensus protocols. Several consensus protocols use a finite projective plane as a communication structure and require 4nn messages in two rounds, where n is the number of nodes. This paper presents an efficient communication structure that uses a finite projective plane with a duality of indices. The communication structure requires 2nn messages in two rounds, and can therefore halve the number of messages. It is shown that a finite projective plane with a duality can be constructed from a difference set, and that the presented communication structure has two kinds of symmetry.

    The effect of intersymbol interference resulting from non-matched receiver filtering on the bit error rate (BER) performance of π/4-DQPSK systems recently adopted in the North American and Japanese digital cellular standards, is analyzed in Rayleigh fading. With a Gaussian or a Butterworth (of order N, 2N10) receiver filter, the BER performance is found to degrade by only a small fraction of a decibel from the performance with ideally matched receiver filters. A 4th-order Butterworth receiver filter leads to BER curves which almost coincide with those of the ideally matched filtering condition.

    This paper discusses the potential benefits of H0-based ISDN. By providing widespread H0 (384kb/s) call services, much like today's telephone systems, it should be possible to bring multimedia public communication services to the general public. Small distributed switching systems and reuse of existing metallic loops will contribute to its economical construction and rapid expansion into general use. System-on-a-chip technology, expected to appear soon, will make the necessary small switching systems cost-effective. The short loops resulting from the distribution will allow Hl-band (1.5/2.0Mb/s) metallic loops to be used. In terms of function, the distributed switching nodes will permit node-by-node customization, which will make switching systems simple and flexible. The proposed node-by-node customization will allow subscribers in each different node to choose they prefer. H0-based ISDN will provide various type of nodes, supporting various types of subscriber loops, whereas present public networks enforce standardized subscriber loops. Furthermore, when customized subscriber switching systems accommodate star-LAN interfaces as subscriber loops, the public network will be able to provide LAN services in a closed area as part of the public network services. The LAN users will be able to converse with ordinary residential subscribers through H0-calls. This will lead to the integration of LANs and public networks.

  • Water Sensing Method with OTDR and Optical Sensor for Non-pressurized Optical Fiber Cable System

    We describe a new water sensing system for optical fiber cable networks. This system consists of optical fibers, water sensors and an OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometer). The water sensor contains material which swells on contact with water and bends the optical fiber. The OTDR monitors the optical loss increase caused by this fiber bending and determines its location. In this system it is very important to determine the loss increase caused by the water sensor in terms of the OTDR performance. Therefore, we clarified the relationship between the water sensor structure and the increase in loss. Based on this study, we fabricated a sensor which causes a 5dB loss increase. The measured value is very close to the calculated value.

  • Signaling Systems for Distributed Micro-Switching Networks in HO-ISDN

    This paper discusses a common channel signaling system in which multiple micro-switching systems can converse as though configured like a conventional centralized switching system. A micro-switching system is a switching system whose main functions are integrated on a chip, like a microprocessor. Progress in MOS technology will soon make micro-switching systems possible, and their small scale and economy will allow subscriber switching systems to be distributed closer to subscribers. This will allow shorter subscriber loops, so subscriber networks will be able to reuse existing metallic lines as H1 (1.544/2.048Mb/s)-class subscriber loops. Economical micro-switching systems and reuse of existing network resources will contribute to the establishment H0 (384kb/s)-ISDN, so that every subscriber will be able to enjoy multimedia communications through HO-calls as simply as using present telephones. Four alternative signaling network architectures are examined, classified by arrangement of their signaling transfer junctions and signaling links, and a new signaling system featuring cell-based transfer functions is proposed. This is suitable for a distributed micro-switching-system network in order to minimize the figures of merit, which collectively estimate network cost and signaling delay.

  • An Analysis of Dose in Tissue Irradiated by Near Field of a Circular Loop Antenna

    This paper presents an analysis of the dose rate in tissue irradiated by an electromagnetic near field of a circular loop antenna. An analytical model comprised of a circular loop antenna located in the vicinity of the semi-infinite plane of a homogeneous biological medium was formulated. A quasi-static hypothesis was not introduced. The theoretical formulation was rigorously developed based on Maxwell equations which used an electric vector potential, cylindrical coordinates and a Hankel transform. The internal electric field E and the specific absorption rate (SAR) were adopted as indices for the dose in the tissue. This formulation was applied to the dosimetry of a high-frequency therapeutic device (HFTD) and experiment of irradiation to a frog web. The frequency of the applied electro-magnetic fields (EMF) was 9-10MHz. The distance between the antenna and tissue was 2.0-3.2mm. The dose of HFTD were 0.75V/m and 0.35mW/kg, respectively. The dose of experiment of the irradiation to a frog web were 0.42-2.08V/m and 0.11-2.69mW/kg, respectively. The SAR values obtained by this analysis were small enough to conclude that the effects were non-thermal. The calculated SARs of these experiments were compared with estimated SARs in experiments on calcium efflux change due to a weak modulated RF field. All were found to be of the same order of magnitude.

    New communication systems via chaotic modulations are experimentally, demonstrated. They contain the wellknown chaotic circuits as its basic elements--Chua's circuits and canonial Chua's circuits. The following advantage is found in our laboratory experiments: (a) Transmitted signals have broad spectra. (b) Secure communications are possible in the sense that the better parameter matching is required in order to recover the signal. (c) The circuit structure of our communication system is most simple at this stage. (d) The communication systems are easily built at a small outlay.

  • Control of Electronic State in Organic Semiconductor by Substituent Groups

    Control of electronic states of dye molecules (organic semiconductors) by introducing appropriate substituent groups has been examined. NH2 (electron-releasing group) and NO2 (electron-withdrawing group) were introduced in thiacarbocyanine dye to modify the electronic states of the dyes. The effect of modification was examined based on the properties of photoelectric cells made by the dye derivatives. Clear increase in photocurrent, more than ten times, was observed when modified dyes were used instead of the original dye. The result shows that the introduction of substituent groups for organic semiconductors is quite effective to control the electronic states, and the introduction can be regarded as doping in molecular level.
