In this paper, we propose and analyze the opportunistic amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying scheme using antenna selection in conjunction with different adaptive transmission techniques over Rayleigh fading channels. In this scheme, the best antenna of a source and the best relay are selected for communication between the source and destination. Closed-form expressions for the outage probability and average symbol error rate (SER) are derived to confirm that increasing the number of antennas is the best option as compared with increasing the number of relays. We also obtain closed-form expressions for the average channel capacity under three different adaptive transmission techniques: 1) optimal power and rate adaptation; 2) constant power with optimal rate adaptation; and 3) channel inversion with a fixed rate. The channel capacity performance of the considered adaptive transmission techniques is evaluated and compared with a different number of relays and various antennas configurations for each adaptive technique. Our derived analytical results are verified through extensive Monte Carlo simulations.

This paper proposes a technique for efficient standing multipath mitigation of geostationary earth orbit (GEO) satellites. The performance of traditional filtering methods for GEO multipath errors can be effectively improved by using carrier frequency variation approach. Conventional multipath mitigation methods do not pay much attention to the GEO satellite multipath effects, and they are less effective due to the non-zero average characteristics of GEO multipath errors for short epochs. By varying carrier frequency, the multipath error average becomes approaching zero in short epochs due to the faster multipath carrier phase variation. Therefore, it could enhance the traditional filtering method performance on the multipath signals. By varying the carrier frequency or the carrier phase offset, the average multipath error will approach zero as a result of the frequent multipath carrier phase variations. This method aims to explore the potential for signal pattern design while improving the performance of current satellite navigation systems. The results show that the root mean square error (RMSE) for pseudo-range multipath errors of the proposed approach improves about 0.3m with a frequency variation range of 15MHz.

The Android pattern unlock is a popular graphical password scheme, where a user is presented a 3×3 grid and required to draw a pattern on the onscreen grid. Each pattern is a sequence of at least four contact points with some restrictions. Theoretically, the security level of unlock patterns is determined by the size of the pattern space. However, the number of possible patterns is only known for 3×3 and 4×4 grids, which was computed by brute-force enumeration. The only mathematical formula for the number of possible patterns is a permutation-based upper bound. In this article, we present an improved upper bound by counting the number of “visible” points that can be directly reached by a point.

This paper proposes an address power reduction method for plasma display panels (PDPs) using subfield data smoothing based on a visual masking effect. High-resolution, high-frame-rate PDPs have large address power loss caused by parasitic capacitance. Although the address power is reduced by smoothing the subfield data, noise is generated. The proposed method reduces the address power while maintaining the image quality by choosing the smoothing area of the address data based on the visual masking effect. The results of subjective assessment for the images based on smoothed address data indicate that image quality is maintained.
This letter proposes an Index based on Irregular Partition of data identifiers (IIP), to enable clients to quickly access multiple data items on a wireless broadcast channel. IIP improves the access time by reducing the index waiting time when clients access multiple data items, through the use of irregular partitioning of the identifier space of data items. Our performance evaluation shows that with respect to access time, the proposed IIP outperforms the existing index schemes supporting multiple data access.

In this work, a novel formulation of crosstalk (XT) is developed, in which the perturbation/loading effect that the generator circuit exerts on the passive part of the receptor circuit is elucidated. Practical conditions (i.e., weak coupling and matching/mismatching of the generator circuit) under which this effect can be neglected are then discussed and exploited to develop an alternative radiated susceptibility (RS) test procedure, which resorts to crosstalk to induce at the terminations of a cable harness the same disturbance that would be induced by an external uniform plane-wave field. The proposed procedure, here developed with reference to typical RS setups foreseen by Standards of the aerospace sector, assures equivalence with field coupling without a priori knowledge and/or specific assumptions on the units connected to the terminations of the cable harness. Accuracy of the proposed scheme of equivalence is assessed by virtual experiments carried out in a full-wave simulation environment.

Many important problems in communication networks, transportation networks, and logistics networks are solved by the minimization of cost functions. In general, these can be complex optimization problems involving many variables. However, physicists noted that in a network, a node variable (such as the amount of resources of the nodes) is connected to a set of link variables (such as the flow connecting the node), and similarly each link variable is connected to a number of (usually two) node variables. This enables one to break the problem into local components, often arriving at distributive algorithms to solve the problems. Compared with centralized algorithms, distributed algorithms have the advantages of lower computational complexity, and lower communication overhead. Since they have a faster response to local changes of the environment, they are especially useful for networks with evolving conditions. This review will cover message-passing algorithms in applications such as resource allocation, transportation networks, facility location, traffic routing, and stability of power grids.

Extending the very popular tori interconnection networks[1]-[3], Torus-Connected Cycles (TCC) have been proposed as a novel network topology for massively parallel systems [5]. Here, the set-to-set disjoint paths routing problem in a TCC is solved. In a TCC(k,n), it is proved that paths of lengths at most kn2+2n can be selected in O(kn2) time.

A number of parallel applications run on a high-performance computing (HPC) system simultaneously. Job mapping and scheduling become crucial to improve system utilization, because fragmentation prevents an incoming job from being assigned even if there are enough compute nodes unused. Wireless supercomputers and datacenters with free-space optical (FSO) terminals have been proposed to replace the conventional wired interconnection so that a diverse application workload can be better supported by changing their network topologies. In this study we firstly present an efficient job mapping by swapping the endpoints of FSO links in a wireless HPC system. Our evaluation shows that an FSO-equipped wireless HPC system can achieve shorter average queuing length and queuing time for all the dispatched user jobs. Secondly, we consider the use of a more complicated and enhanced scheduling algorithm, which can further improve the system utilization over different host networks, as well as the average response time for all the dispatched user jobs. Finally, we present the performance advantages of the proposed wireless HPC system under more practical assumptions such as different cabinet capacities and diverse subtopology packings.

In this paper, a morpheme-based weighting and its integration method are proposed as a smoothing method to alleviate the data sparseness in Chinese-Mongolian statistical machine translation (SMT). Besides, we present source-side reordering as the pre-processing model to verify the extensibility of our method. Experi-mental results show that the morpheme-based weighting can substantially improve the translation quality.
In this paper, we study a novel method to avoid a local minimum stagnation in the design problem of IIR (Infinite Impulse Response) filters using PSO (Particle Swarm Optimization). Although PSO is appropriate to solve nonlinear optimization problems, it is reported that a local minimum stagnation occurs due to a strong intensification of particles during the search. Then, multi-swarm PSO based on the particle reallocation strategy is proposed to avoid the local minimum stagnation. In this method, a reallocation space is determined by using some global bests. In this paper, the relationship between the number of swarms and the best value of design error is shown and the effectiveness of the proposed method is shown through several design examples.

We developed flexible LC devices using coat-debond polyimide substrates with a low birefringence and etched post spacers, and clarified that flexible LCDs using post spacers with small spacer distance have a high flexibility without degradation of the image quality. This result ensured the feasibility of flexible LCDs using coat-debond method.

In a network with dense deployment of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) small cells, coverage overlap between the small cells produces intercell-interference, which degrades system capacity. This paper proposes an intercell-interference management (IIM) scheme that aims to maximize system capacity by using both power control for intercell-interference coordination (ICIC) on the transmitter side and interference cancellation (IC) on the receiver side. The power control determines transmit power levels at the base stations (BSs) by employing a neural network (NN) algorithm over the backhaul. To further improve the signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR), every user terminal (UT) employs a multiuser detector (MUD) as IC. The MUD detects not only the desired signals, but also some interfering signals to be cancelled from received signals. The receiver structure consists of branch metric generators (BMGs) and MUD. BMGs suppress residual interference and noise in the received signals by whitening matched filters (WMFs), and then generate metrices by using the WMFs' outputs and symbol candidates that the MUD provides. On the basis of the metrices, the MUD detects both the selected interfering signals and the desired signals. In addition, the MUD determines which interfering signals are detected by an SINR based replica selection algorithm. Computer simulations demonstrate that the SINR based replica selection algorithm, which is combined with channel encoders and packet interleavers, can significantly improve the system bit error rate (BER) and that combining IC at the receiver with NN power control at the transmitter can considerably increase the system capacity. Furthermore, it is shown that choosing the detected interfering signals by the replica selection algorithm can obtain system capacity with comparable loss and less computational complexity compared to the conventional greedy algorithm.

We propose an exponent-based partitioning broadcast protocol (EPBP) to promise the prompt dissemination of emergency message (EM) in vehicular networks. EPBP divides the communication range into segments with different widths iteratively. The width varies corresponding to the exponential curve. The design makes the farther no-empty segment thinner, as a result of which the collision rate of candidates' contention for the relay node decreases and the one-hop message progress increases efficiently. In addition, we adjust the interval of back-off timers to avoid the spurious forwarding problem, and develop more accurate analytical models for the performance. Our simulation verifies these models and show a significant increase of EPBP compared with the state-of-the-art protocols. EM dissemination speed can be improved as 55.94% faster in dense vehicle networks, and packet delivery ratio has risen to higher than 99.99%.

In data center networks, Quantized Congestion Notification (QCN) has been ratified as the standard congestion management mechanism in the link layer. Since QCN nonlinearly switches between the rate increase and decrease stages, it is very difficult to understand QCN in depth and provide theoretical guidelines on setting the buffer size of the QCN switch. This paper gives an explicit formula for the boundary of buffer occupancy of the QCN switch. Specifically, based on the fluid model of QCN, we first derive the uniformly asymptotic stability condition of the QCN system. Then, under the condition that QCN is uniformly asymptotically stable, we analyze the buffer occupancy of the QCN switch theoretically and show that the classic rule-of-thumb for buffer sizing is not suitable for QCN. Finally, simulations validate the accuracy of our theoretical results.

When using a wireless capsule endoscope (WCE), it is important to know WCE location. In this paper, we focus on a time of arrival (TOA)-based localization technique, as it has better location estimation performance than other radio frequency-based techniques. However, the propagation speed of signals transmitted from inside of a human body varies depending on which biological tissues they pass through. For this reason, almost all of conventional TOA-based methods have to obtain the relative permittivity of the passed biological tissues or the propagation speed beforehand through another measurement system, i.e., magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computational tomography (CT). To avoid such troublesome pre-measurement, we propose a hybrid TOA/received signal strength indicator (RSSI)-based method, which can simultaneously estimate the WCE location and the averaged relative permittivity of the human body. First, we derive the principle of RSSI-based relative permittivity estimation from an finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulation. Second, we combine the TOA-based localization and the proposed RSSI-based relative permittivity estimation, and add them to the particle filter tracking technique. Finally, we perform computer simulations to evaluate the estimation accuracy of the proposed method. The simulation results show that the proposed method can accomplish good localization performance, 1.3mm, without pre-measurement of the human body structure information.

Tor's hidden services provide both sender privacy and recipient privacy to users. A hot topic in security of Tor is how to deanonymize its hidden services. Existing works proved that the recipient privacy could be revealed, namely a hidden server's real IP address could be located. However, the hidden service's circuit is bi-directionally anonymous, and the sender privacy can also be revealed. In this letter, we propose a novel approach that can transparently discover the client of the hidden service. Based on extensive analysis on the hidden service protocol, we find a combination of cells which can be used to generate a special traffic feature with the cell-padding mechanism of Tor. A user can implement some onion routers in Tor networks and monitor traffic passing through them. Once the traffic feature is discovered, the user confirms one of the controlled routers is chosen as the entry router, and the adjacent node is the client. Compared with the existing works, our approach does not disturb the normal communication of the hidden service. Simulations have demonstrated the effectiveness of our method.

Diabetes mellitus is a group of metabolic diseases that cause high blood sugar due to functional problems with the pancreas or metabolism. Diabetic patients have few subjective symptoms and may experience decreased sensation without being aware of it. The commonly performed tests for sensory disorders are qualitative in nature. The authors pay attention to the decline of the sensitivity of tactile sensations, and develop a non-invasive method to detect the level of tactile sensation using a novel micro-vibration actuator that employs shape-memory alloy wires. Previously, we performed a pilot study that applied the device to 15 diabetic patients and confirmed a significant reduction in the tactile sensation in diabetic patients when compared to healthy subjects. In this study, we focus on the asymptomatic development of decreased sensation associated with diabetes mellitus. The objectives are to examine diabetic patients who are unaware of abnormal or decreased sensation using the quantitative tactile sensation measurement device and to determine whether tactile sensation is decreased in patients compared to healthy controls. The finger method is used to measure the Tactile Sensation Threshold (TST) score of the index and middle fingers using the new device and the following three procedures: TST-1, TST-4, and TST-8. TST scores ranged from 1 to 30 were compared between the two groups. The TST scores were significantly higher for the diabetic patients (P<0.05). The TST scores for the left fingers of diabetic patients and healthy controls were 5.9±6.2 and 2.7±2.9 for TST-1, 15.3±7.0 and 8.7±6.4 for TST-4, and 19.3±7.8 and 12.7±9.1 for TST-8. Our data suggest that the use of the new quantitative tactile sensation measurement device enables the detection of decreased tactile sensation in diabetic patients who are unaware of abnormal or decreased sensation compared to controls.

This paper proposes an efficient lossless coding scheme for color video in RGB 4:4:4 format. For the R signal that is encoded before the other signals at each frame, we employ a block-adaptive prediction technique originally developed for monochrome video. The prediction technique used for the remaining G and B signals is extended to exploit inter-color correlations as well as inter- and intra-frame ones. In both cases, multiple predictors are adaptively selected on a block-by-block basis. For the purpose of designing a set of predictors well suited to the local properties of video signals, we also explore an appropriate setting for the spatiotemporal partitioning of a video volume.
