  • The Long-Term Charge Storage Mechanism of Silicon Dioxide Electrets for Microsystems

    In order to improve the sensitivity of micromachined sensors applied with electrostatic fields and increase their actuated force of electrostatic micromachined actuators, "electrets," which are dielectrics carrying non equilibrium permanent space charges of polarization distribution, are very important. In this paper, positively corona charged silicon dioxide electrets, which are deposited by Plasma Chemical Vapor Deposition (PCVD) and thermally oxidized, are investigated. Physical studies will be described, in which the charge stability is correlated to Thermally Stimulated Current (TSC) measurements and to Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) analysis. Some intrinsic differences have been observed between materials. The electrets with superior long-term charge stability contain 10,000 times as much E' center (Si3 as the ones with inferior long-term charge stability. Finally, some investigations on the long-term charge storage mechanism of the positively charged silicon dioxide electret will be described.

  • High-Tc Superconducting Planar Filter for Power Handling Capability

    A high-Tc superconducting filter of the planar structure is proposed for handling higher power signals and for miniaturizing the filter configuration. The filter is designed with a single disk-resonator shared by two degenerate modes to operate as a two-stage bandpass filter. Thereby the proposed filter is expected to possess high power handling capability as a conventional filter with two resonator disks does while the filter configuration is about a half in area compared to the conventional one. The Tchebyscheff type filter with 5.1 GHz center frequency and 2% relative bandwidth was fabricated using a high-Tc superconducting thin film. The passband insertion loss, Lo, was approximately 0.8 dB at 77 K. The low loss performance due to the superconductivity was observed at incident signal levels up to 41.2 dBm (around 15 W) at 20 K, which is limited by the power devices in the measurement setup. In addition, good linearity in the filter responses was confirmed by observing the intermodulation distortion with the two-tone method, which indirectly shows a stable operation with higher power incident signals.

    Amorphous silicon thin film transistors(a-Si TFTs) with a channel-etched structure were fabricated. The key technologies to realize these simple-process TFTs were 1) fabricating data lines and pixel electrodes of indium tin oxide(ITO); 2) carrying out tapered dry etching of plural layers of the a-Si and gate insulator silicon nitide; and 3) forming silicide layer to reduce the contact resistance between the phosphorousdoped a-Si and ITO. Excellent image quality, with a high contrast ratio of more than 100: 1, was obtained for video graphic array(VGA) mode TFT-LCDs using a dot inversion driving method. Furthermore, the transmission distribution was uniform with less than a 4.5% deviation on the whole display area although the ITO data line resistances were as large as 120 kΩ per line.

  • Development of New Liquid Crystal Materials for TFT LCDs

    We report recent progress in the development of Liquid Crystal(LC) materials for the TN-TFT and ECB-TFT technologies, which require LC materials with positive and negative dielectric anisotropy, respectively. Many kinds of new LC materials have been synthesized and have been evaluated based on their fundamental physical properties. We have succeeded in identifying new LC materials, and developing new LC mixtures based on those, so that the current typical requirements of TFT-LCDs e.g. fast switching times, low power consumption, good viewing angles and wide operation temperature ranges together with high reliability can be fulfilled.

    The characteristics of a-Si bottom-gate TFT test devices with several kinds of inorganic "quasi-black matrix," such as metal, semiconductor, and insulator, on the top were investigated for various black matrix(BM) resistivities. In the Ia-Vg characteristics, for a BM sheet resistance of about1 1012 Ω/, a high off current and large Vth shift were observed due to the back-gating effects when the BM is charged up. Accrding to the ac dynamic characteristics, there was almost no leakage due to the capacitive coupling between source and drain after 16.6 msec(one frame) when the BM sheet resistance was above 7 1013 Ω/ . It was found that hydrogenated amorphous silicon germanium(a-SiGe:H) film, which has enough optical density, with the sheet resistance above the order of 1014 Ω/ is a promising candidate for an inorganic BM on TFT array.

    Super twisted nematic (STN) liquid crystal displays(LCDs) using spiral polymer aligned nematic (SPAN) liquid crystals have been achieved by photo-polymerization of some kinds of chiral monoacrylates in liquid crystalline hosts.The spiral polymer made of a chiral monoacrylate in STN LCD has effect to reduce the driving voltage without any disadvantages for the STN LCD. The relation of chemical structure of a chiral monoacrylate and nature of spiral polymer is discussed.

    To overcome the problem of narrow viewing angle in active matrix liquid crystal displasy(LCDs) in the twisted nematic mode(TN mode), we have proposed a new LCD mode using a bend-alignment cell with an optical compensator. In this new mode, we have successfully obtained a black state with almost no leakage over a wide viewing angle range with very fast response. We describe the fundamental principle and design rule of the optical compensator and discuss the properties obtained in theoretical and experimental term.

  • Recovery of 3-D Road Plane Based on 2-D Perspective Image Analysis and Processing

    This paper introduces a new method to recover 3-D road plane from its 2-D monocular perspective image. The research is aimed at the reconstruction of depth information from the 2-D visual input in road following and navigation. Planar road model is considered and the road-centered coordinate system which forms slope and turn angles with camera-centered coordinate system is used to describe boundary points on road plane. We develop approaches to find matching points of boundaries of road and to obtain angular parameters thereafter. A way of finding depth of matching points from the perspective images and angular parameters together is proposed. Therefore the 3-D road reconstruction can be replicated without introducing any parameters of inverse perspective.

  • Striping in a Disk Array with Data/Parity Placement Scheme RM2 Tolerating Double Disk Failures*

    There is a growing demand for high reliability beyond what current RAID can provide and there are various levels of user demand for data reliability. An efficient data placement scheme called RM2 has been proposed in [10], which makes a disk array system resistant to double disk failures. In this paper, we consider how to choose an optimal striping unit for RM2 particularly when no workload information is available except read/write ratio. For experimental purposes, we develop a disk array simulator incorporating RM2 as one of the data placement schemes including other schemes of RAID levels. In the case of disk read operations, it is shown that RM2 has an optimal striping unit of 4/3T for large requests and 8/3T for small requests, where T represents the size of a single track. We have also shown that, if any disk write operations are involved, an optimal striping unit becomes 1/3T for large requests and 8/3T for small requests.

    A 33-cm-Diagonal High-Resolution(1280 1024RGB, which stands for red, green, and blue) TFT-LCD with low, uniform parasitic capacitance between gate electrodes and source/drain electrodes has been developed using Fully Self-Aligned a-Si TFTs. The fabricated TFT-LCD shows no visible seams between block shot exposure regions, even in the display of gray images. In this paper, we describe(1) our full self-alignment technology for the TFTs, including the fabrication process and the technology for reducing OFF current in the TFTs under illumination, (2) SPICE simulation for estimating pixel voltage shift in the fabricated TFT-LCD, and (3) performance results for the fabricated TFT-LCD.

  • Wide Viewing-Angle Displays with ln-Plane Switching Mode of Nematic LCs Addressed by TFTs

    A Suitable TFT structure for wide viewingangle displays with in-plane switching mode of nematic LCs has been developed. The structure can be constructed by simplified process reduced the number of electrode layers, suppressing crosstalk generation which is essential for combining the IPS mode with TFTs. A practical aperture ratio was obtained in spite of the existence of interdigital electrodes in a pixel. It has also been adopted into a prototype which have a 10.4 inch diagonal display area with VGA resolution and which display 262,144 colors. This prototype has clarified that these display with the IPS mode have extremely wide viewing-angle characteristic exceeding the polar viewing-angle of 45 degrees satisfying contrast ratio more than 10 without gray-scale inversion in all azimuthal angles. In particular, the color shifting area is very slight in comparison with conventional TFT-LCDs with twisted nematic mode. It has been confirmed that IPS-TFT-LCDs are promising candidates for the next generation LCDs with wide viewing-angles and make it possible to replace CRTS in monitors and televisions.

    Precise direct mounting of laser diode (LD) and photodiode (PD) chips on silica planar lightwave circuits (PLCs) has been investigated for application to transceiver modules. To achieve submicron optical alignment, self-aligned index marks on the PLCs and LDs were directly detected by transmission infrared light. The repeatability of the positioning was measured to be within 0.125 µm. The output power of the resultant module was 0.2 mW at 80 mA. A waveguide-type PD was also mounted in the same way, and module sensitivity of 0.25 A/W was demonstrated.

    Let W be a real symmetric matrix associated with a weighted 2-connected planar graph. It is important to study a fast algorithm to solve the linear system Wx = c, since the system has many various applicaions, for example to solve partial defferencial equations numerically. In this paper, a new algorithm for the solution of a linear system of equations by Δ-Y transformations is proposed, and a sufficient condition for using this algorithm is proved. We show that this algorithm solves in O (n3/2) time a linear system associated with a planar graph which is embedded a cylinder graph with n vertices.

    We proposed a new marker design for passive alignment of a laser to a fiber on a silicon waferboard. Our fiducial marker is simple form and easy to fabricate. With a unique marker design, high accurate positioning of the laser chip is easily achieved using a conventional flip-chip bonder. We have successfully fabricated laser modules with uniform coupling, within 1 dB for a flat end single-mode fiber and within 2 dB for a hemispherical end fiber. This assembly method offers the potential for low-cost optical module packaging.

    Storage system in a multimedia server must satisfy two contradicting requirements: real-timeliness and large number of parallel user requests. Efficient algorithms for data placement, disk head scheduling, and request admission control schemes are needed to support the requirements. In this paper, we propose efficient schemes to maximize system resource utilization and service availability: cyclic placement scheme, subgroup retrieval scheme, and measurement-based request admission control scheme. Performance analysis through simulation revealed that the amount of system buffers required can be reduced by 70% approximately.

    In the traditional note symbol extraction processes, extracted candidates of note elements were identified using complex if-then rules based on the note formation rules and they needed subtle adjustment of parameters through many experiments. The purpose of our system is to avoid the tedious tasks and to present an accurate and high-speed extraction of note heads, stems and flags according to the following procedure. (1) We extract head and flag candidates based on the stem positions. (2) To identify heads and flags from the candidates, we use a couple of three-layer neural networks. To make the networks learn, we give the position informations and reliability factors of candidates to the input units. (3) With the weights learned by the net, the head and flag candidates are recognized. As an experimental result, we obtained a high extraction rate of more than 99% for thirteen printed piano scores on A4 sheet which have various difficulties. Using a workstation (SPARC Station 10), it took about 90 seconds to do on the average. It means that our system can analyze piano scores 5 times or more as fast as the manual work. Therefore, our system can execute the task without the traditional tedious works, and can recognize them quickly and accurately.

    One approach for image edge sharpening which includes a phase-only synthesis (POS) is presented. The technique presented here is the generalized version of the traditional Laplacian image enhancement. The utilizing of an internally dividing point between the POS and the Laplacian enhancement image makes this approach more flexible, more effective.

    The Voronoi diagram is the most fundamental and useful concept in computational geometry. To understand impacts of non-Euclidean geometry on computational geometry, this paper investigates the Voronoi diagram in hyperbolic space. We first present characterizations of this diagram by means of the Enclidean Voronoi diagram, and based on them propose efficient algorithms to construct it. Some applications are also mentioned.

  • A Study on MgO Powder and MgO Liquid Binder in the Screen-Printed Protective Layer for AC-PDPs

    Protective layers in AC plasma display panels (PDP) are usually formed by vacuum vapor deposition or sputtering. It is important to study the protective MgO layer by means of screen-printing for fabricating a large size PDP and reducing its cost. With the objectives of enlarging the panel size and reducing cost, we studied the fabrication of the protective MgO layer by means of screen-printing. In this study, we succeeded in lowering the drive voltage by using a MgO powder prepared by vapor phase oxidation instead of conventional decomposition of the magnesium salt. Further, by adding a MgO liquid binder, we attained a good luminous efficiency twice as high as that attained with a sputtered protective layer and lowered the drive voltage. When this protective layer was combined with He-Xe gas enclosure, the half-life of luminance was 5,000 hours. With Ne-Xe gas, the luminance deteriorated no more than 40% after 5,000 hours. A screen-printed protective MgO layer containing no MgO liquid binder showed a short half-life of 800 hours even with the use of Ne-Xe gas. In this case, the discharge voltage changed greatly and some cells did not discharge. It is concluded that the combination of an ultrafine MgO powder prepared by vapor phase oxidation and a MgO liquid binder can clear the way for making AC PDPs with a long lifetime, high efficiency, and low voltage a practical reality.

    Recently, ABR has been attracting attention as a new service category of ATM, and the methodology to realize ABR is being actively discussed in the ATM Forum. ABR is expected to become a suitable class for supporting LAN services on ATM networks. To this end, a technical foundation must be established in which bandwidth is effectively utilized and quality is guaranteed. In order for ABR to use a portion of the bandwidth that is not used by high-priority classes (CBR, VBR), it is necessary to appropriately estimate the unused portion of the bandwidth. Due to the fact that the unused portion of the bandwidth in ATM networks fluctuates, such fluctuations must be taken into account. This paper describes ABR connection admission control and design of the congestion detecting point in an ABR buffer using Allan variance of the unused portion of the bandwidth.
