We demonstrated a compact 16×16 multicast switch (MCS) made from a silica-based planar lightwave circuit (PLC). The switch utilizes a new electrical connection method based on surface mount technology (SMT). Five electrical connectors are soldered directly to the PLC by using the standard reflow process used for electrical devices. We reduced the chip size to half of one made with conventional wire bonding technology. We obtained satisfactory solder contacts and excellent switching properties. These results indicate that the proposed method is suitable for large-scale optical switches including MCSs, variable optical attenuators, dispersion compensators, and so on.

Radio frequency energy transfer (RET) technology has been introduced as a promising energy harvesting (EH) method to supply power in both wireless communication (WLC) and power-line communication (PLC) systems. However, current RET modified MAC (medium access control) protocols have been proposed only for WLC systems. Due to the difference in the MAC standard between WLC and PLC systems, these protocols are not suitable for PLC systems. Therefore, how to utilize RET technology to modify the MAC protocol of PLC systems (i.e., IEEE 1901), which can use the radio frequency signal to provide the transmission power and the PLC medium to finish the data transmission, i.e., realizing the ‘cooperative communication’ remains a challenge. To resolve this problem, we propose a RET modified MAC protocol for PLC systems (RET-PLC MAC). Firstly, we improve the standard PLC frame sequence by adding consultation and confirmation frames, so that the station can obtain suitable harvested energy, once it occupied the PLC medium, and the PLC system can be operated in an on-demand and self-sustainable manner. On this basis, we present the working principle of RET-PLC MAC. Then, we establish an analytical model to allow mathematical verification of RET-PLC MAC. A 2-dimension discrete Markov chain model is employed to derive the numerical analysis results of RET-PLC MAC. The impacts of buffer size, traffic rate, deferral counter process of 1901, heterogeneous environment and quality of information (QoI) are comprehensively considered in the modeling process. Moreover, we deduce the optimal results of system throughput and expected QoI. Through extensive simulations, we show the performance of RET-PLC MAC under different system parameters, and verify the corresponding analytical model. Our work provides insights into realizing cooperative communication at PLC's MAC layer.

Silica-LiNbO3 (LN) hybrid modulators have a hybrid configuration of versatile passive silica-based planar lightwave circuits (PLCs) and simple LN phase modulators arrays. By combining the advantages the two components, these hybrid modulators offer large-scale, highly-functionality modulators with low losses for advanced modulation formats. However, the reliability evaluation necessary to implement them in real transmissions has not been reported yet. In terms of reliability characteristics, there are issues originating from the difference in thermal expansion coefficients between silica PLC and LN. To resolve these issues, we propose design guidelines for hybrid modulators to mitigate the degradation induced by the thermal expansion difference. We fabricated several tens of silica-LN dual polarization quadrature phase shift keying (DP-QPSK) modulators based on the design guidelines and evaluated their reliability. The experiment results show that the modules have no degradation after a reliability test based on GR-468, which confirms the validity of the design guidelines for highly reliable silica-LN hybrid modulators. We can apply the guidelines for hybrid modules that realize heterogeneous device integration using materials with different coefficients of thermal expansion.

Power line communications (PLC) is a communication technology that uses a power-line as a transmission medium. Previous studies have shown that connecting an AC adapter such as a mobile phone charger to the power-line affects signal quality. Therefore, in this paper, the authors analyze the influence of chargers on inter-computer communications using packet capture to evaluate communications quality. The analysis results indicate the occurrence of a short duration in which packets are not detected once in a half period of the power-line supply: named communication forbidden time. For visualizing the communication forbidden time and for evaluating the communications quality of the inter-computer communications using PLC, the authors propose an instantaneous power-line frequency synchronized superimposed chart and its plotting algorithm. Further, in order to analyze accurately, the position of the communication forbidden time can be changed by altering the initial burst signal plotting position. The difference in the chart, which occurs when the plotting start position changes, is also discussed. We show analysis examples using the chart for a test bed data assumed an ideal environment, and show the effectiveness of the chart for analyzing PLC inter-computer communications.

In this paper, we propose an enhanced selected mapping (e-SLM) technique to improve the performance of OFDM-PLC systems under impulsive noise. At the transmitter, the best transmit sequence is selected from among possible candidates so as to minimize the weighted sum of transmit signal peak power and the estimated receive one, where the received signal peak power is estimated at the transmitter using channel state information (CSI). At the receiver, a nonlinear blanking is applied to hold the impulsive noise under a given threshold, where impulsive noise detection accuracy is improved by the proposed e-SLM. We evaluate the probability of false alarms raised by impulsive noise detection and bit error rate (BER) of OFDM-PLC system using the proposed e-SLM. The results show the effectiveness of the proposed method in OFDM-PLC system compared with the conventional blanking technique.

Impedance mismatching is a major obstacle hindering the application of DC power line communication (DC-PLC) due to the unpredictability of access impedance and random loads. Researchers and manufacturers typically estimate the power line impedance level and use a fixed single-winding coupler to carry out signal coupling, which does not achieve accurate impedance matching and leads to large signal attenuation and low reliability. In this paper, a lumped parameter power line communication model for DC-PLC is established in which the optimal receiver winding ratio is derived from equivalent circuits. A modifiable impedance matching coupler was designed to achieve dynamic impedance matching, and a series of simulations were run to analyze the relationship among optimal winding ratio, power line impedance and series loads. The performance of different winding ratio couplers under varied frequency and load impedance was also measured in a laboratory environment to find that adopting the modifiable impedance matching coupler is indeed a useful strategy for achieving adaptive impedance matching with maximum signal power transfer.

A PLC based mode multi/demultiplexer based on asymmetric directional coupler has advantages in terms of compactness, mass productivity, low insertion loss, and matured reliability. However, it has relatively large wavelength dependence due to the difference of coupling length. To expand the bandwidth, we have designed two-mode (LP01/LP11a) multi/demultiplexer by wavefront matching method and demonstrated the broadband and low-loss characteristics. This paper reviews the device design by wavefront matching method and investigates the mechanism of its broadband characteristics.

This paper proposes a technique for broadcasting control of Smart Air Conditioners (SACs) by implementing the Narrowband Powerline Communications (NB-PLC) technology. The Master Control Room (MCR) generates commands for SACs operation that are sent over power lines by using the communication protocol known as Smart Energy Profile 1.0 (SEP 1.0). The proposed system can also offers features like Demand Response (DR) to facilitate the Smart Grid (SG). Field measurements elucidate the performance of NB-PLC systems. Measurements are carried out by injecting and receiving the NB-PLC signal over low voltage (LV) power lines, medium voltage (MV) power lines and across transformers. A hybrid communication system, NB-PLC integrated with Optical Fiber Network (OFN), is developed for the automation of Distribution System (DS) of Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO). The developed system was tested for the DR program in order to support the Smart Air Conditioning system within Lahore. It is suggested that by adjusting the commercial SACs parameters, the task of energy conservation can be achieved by optimizing the peak load curves for greater efficiency. Moreover, data of various types of appliances can also be communicated to the MCR for the purpose of demand side management.

This manuscript presents a simple scheme to improve the performance of a feedback control system that uses power line channels for its feedback loop. The noise and attenuation of power lines, and thus the signal to noise ratio, are known to be cyclostationary. Such cyclic features in the channel allow us to predict virtually error free transmission instants as well as instants of high probability of errors. This paper introduces and evaluates the effectiveness of a packet transmission scheduling that collaborates with a predictive control scheme adapted to this cyclostationary environment. In other words, we explore the cooperation between the physical and application layers of the system in order to achieve an overall optimization. To rate the control quality of the system we evaluate its stability as well as its ability to follow control commands accurately. We compare a scheme of increased packet rate against our proposed scheme which emulates a high packet rate with the use of predictive control. Through this comparison, we verify the effectiveness of the proposed scheme to improve the control quality of the system, even under low signal to noise ratio conditions in the cyclostationary channel.

With the approval of IEEE 1901 standard for power line communications (PLC) and the recent Internet-enable home appliances like the IPTV having access to a content-on-demand service through the Internet as AcTVila in Japan, there is no doubt that PLC has taken a great step forward to emerge as the preeminent in-home-network technology. However, existing schemes developed so far have not considered the PLC network connected to an unstable Internet environment (i.e. more realistic situation). In this paper, we investigate the communication performance from the end-user's perspective in networks with large and variable round-trip time (RTT) and with the existence of cross-traffic. Then, we address the problem of unfair bandwidth allocation when multiple and different types of flows coexist and propose a TCP rate control considering the difference in terms of end-to-end delay to solve it. We validate our methodology through simulations, and show that it effectively deals with the throughput unfairness problem under critical communication environment, where multiple flows with different RTTs share the PLC and cross-traffic exists on the path of the Internet.

We present MIMO-OFDM based broadband power line communication (BPLC) that uses antenna and fading diversity. We evaluate the proposed MIMO-OFDM over BPLC channels, with or without cross-talk between antenna paths. The proposed scheme employs maximum ratio combining (MRC) that effectively combines both multiple antenna diversity gain and multipath fading diversity gain over 3-phase (22 MIMO, outdoor) or 1-phase (SISO, indoor) power line channels. Simulation results prove the performance advantage of the proposed scheme, whether or not cross-talk exists, over existing schemes.

This paper discusses a control system that employs a power line to transfer signals to control the motion of a single machine, and explores the influence of packet losses on the quality of the control. As an example of a controlled system, a controller with a rotary inverted pendulum as a controlled object, is considered. The feedback loop in between is the power line. The control performance is evaluated in the power line cyclostationary noise environment and compared against the performance in a stationary noise environment. As a result, it is confirmed that the power line and its cyclostationary noise features present an advantage against transmission in a channel with stationary noise.

For the control of multiple servomotors in a humanoid robots, a communication system is proposed. In the system, DC electric power, command/response signals and a common clock signal for precise synchronous movement of the servomotors are transmitted via the same wiring with a multi-drop bus. Because of the bandwidth limitation, the common clock signal and the command/response signals overlap each other. It is confirmed that the coexistence of both signals is possible by using interference cancellation at the reception of command/response signals.

Broadband optical access services are spreading throughout the world, and the number of fiber to the home (FTTH) subscribers is increasing rapidly. Telecom operators are constructing passive optical networks (PONs) to provide optical access services. Externally installed optical splitters for PONs are very important passive devices in optical access networks, and they must provide satisfactory performance as outdoor plant over long periods. Therefore, we calculate the failure rate of optical access networks and assign a failure rate to the optical splitters in optical access networks. The maximum cumulative failure rate of 18 optical splitters was calculated as 0.025 for an optical access fiber length of 2.1 km and a 20-year operating lifetime. We examined planar lightwave circuit (PLC) type optical splitters for use as outside plant in terms of their optical characteristics and environmental reliability. We confirmed that PLC type optical splitters have sufficient optical performance for a PON splitter and sufficient reliability as outside plant in accordance with ITU-T standard values. We estimated the lifetimes of three kinds of PLC type optical splitters by using accelerated aging tests. The estimated failure rate of these splitters installed in optical access networks was below the target value for the cumulative failure rate, and we confirmed that they have sufficient reliability to maintain the quality of the network service. We developed 18 optical splitter modules with plug and socket type optical connectors and optical fiber cords for optical aerial closures designed for use as outside plant. These technologies make it easy to install optical splitters in an aerial optical closure. The optical splitter modules have sufficient optical performance levels for PONs because the insertion loss at the commercially used wavelengths of 1.31 and 1.55 µm is less than the criterion established by ITU-T Recommendation G.671 for optical splitters. We performed a temperature cycling test, and a low temperature storage and damp heat test to confirm the long-term reliability of these modules. They exhibited sufficient reliability as regards heat and moisture because the maximum loss change was less than 0.3 dB.

We investigated the effect of a high-speed power line communication (PLC) signal induced into a very high-speed digital subscriber line (VDSL) system by conductive coupling based on a network model. Four electronic devices with AC mains and telecommunication ports were modeled using a 4-port network, and the parameters of the network were obtained from measuring impedance and transmission loss. We evaluated the decoupling factor from the mains port to the telecommunication port of a VDSL modem using these parameters for the four electric and electronic devices. The results indicate that the mean value of the decoupling factor for the differential and common mode signals were more than 88 and 62 dB, respectively, in the frequency range of a PLC system. Taking the following parameters into consideration; decoupling factor Ld, the average transmission signal powers of VDSL and PLC, desired and undesired (DU) ratio, and transmission loss of a typical 300-m-long indoor telecommunication line, the VDSL system cannot be disturbed by the PLC signal induced into the VDSL modem from the AC mains port in normal installation.

This paper overviews the high-speed power-line communication (PLC) technology, and the related standardization and regulatory activities are described. PLC modems of 200 Mbps class become a practical use stage in the West, and the standardization activity is active now. The discussion for deregulation is being continued in also Japan, and regulation values have been proposed. Another topic in this paper is a sensor network application of PLC, which is an indoor fine-grained localization system by acoustic Direct-Sequence Code Division Multiplexed (DS-CDM) signals. The obtained average accuracy of the localization in a 4 m2 plane was 1 cm if there was no obstacle. To realize the localization system, some novel ideas, such as PLC speakers, a synchronization method based on the zero-crossing timing of the mains frequency, and integrated wired/wireless PLC, are introduced.

The power line communication (PLC) system should be investigated with respect to the influence on electromagnetic environments. Longitudinal conversion loss (LCL) and input impedance are important parameters for evaluating the influence because they are closely related to the radiated, conducted, and inducted emission. An indoor AC mains system consisting of electrical equipment and an AC mains line was modeled by four-port networks, and the LCL and the input impedance were calculated. The parameters of the four-port networks were determined from theory and measurement. The analytical model was examined using a simple network and the results show that the calculated values agreed with the measured ones. The LCL and the input impedance were investigated at the AC mains port in some existing buildings, and the measured results almost agreed with the calculated results derived from the indoor AC mains system model.

High-speed power line communication (PLC) can transmit an information signal of several hundred megabits per second over the power lines that transport electrical energy. Because this system employs unmodified existing transmission lines and the signal can be accessed through the simple interface of an ordinary electrical outlet, it promises to serve as the most effective transmission system for supporting information home appliances. For high-speed PLC to become practical requires that the frequencies used be expanded to 30 MHz, a frequency band is already used by many wireless communication systems. Thus, shared use with those systems is the most important problem. This paper introduces technical trends related to that issue.
