In this letter, a novel channel impulse response (CIR)-based fingerprinting positioning method using kernel principal component analysis (KPCA) has been proposed. During the offline phase of the proposed method, a survey is performed to collect all CIRs from access points, and a fingerprint database is constructed, which has vectors including CIR and physical location. During the online phase, KPCA is first employed to solve the nonlinearity and complexity in the CIR-position dependencies and extract the principal nonlinear features in CIRs, and support vector regression is then used to adaptively learn the regress function between the KPCA components and physical locations. In addition, the iterative narrowing-scope step is further used to refine the estimation. The performance comparison shows that the proposed method outperforms the traditional received signal strength based positioning methods.

The analytic expressions of lightning electromagnetic fields generated by tortuous channel with an inclined lower section are obtained by decomposing the current infinitesimal and solving Maxwell's equations. By using the transmission line model and pulse function to express the channel-base current, the influence of length and tilt angle of the oblique part on lightning electromagnetic fields as well as the distribution laws of electromagnetic fields for different azimuth angles are analyzed. The results show that the electromagnetic fields in near area are mainly determined by the lower section of the tortuous discharge channel, and the peak values of electromagnetic fields in different field regions will increase with the increasing of the length of the lower section when L1 is shorter than the distance that return-stroke speed multiplied by peak time. Whereas the length of the lower section is longer than the distance that return-stroke speed multiplied by peak time, the waveforms of electromagnetic fields will overlap each other and won't be influenced by oblique part length of the discharge channel before the return-stroke current arrives at the inflection point. Moreover, the peak values of electromagnetic fields will decrease with the increase of tilt angle (the azimuth angle φ = 2π/3) and azimuth angle, and the impact of channel geometry on the electromagnetic field strengthens with the distance.
A 62ps timing resolution pulse generator (PG) is presented. The PG adopts the multi-phase ring oscillator and the pulse combiner circuit (PCC) to achieve the low timing error. The PCC can decide an arbitrary waveform via 16 phase outputs. PCC adopts the coarse-tuning stage (CTS) and the fine-tuning (FTS) to define the operational frequency range and the timing resolution, respectively. Hence, PCC uses edge combiner (EC) to combine the period window of CTS. The latency of PG is only 3 cycle times. The operational frequency range of PG is from 15MHz to 245MHz. The timing resolution and average accuracy of PG are 62.5ps and ±0.5 LSB, respectively. The RMS jitter and peak-to-peak jitter of PG are 6.55ps and 66.67ps, respectively, at 245MHz.
Performance evaluation of an improved multiband impulse radio ultra-wideband (MIR UWB) system based on sub-band selection is proposed in this paper. In the improved scheme, a data mapping algorithm is introduced to a conventional MIR UWB system, and out of all the sub-bands, only partial ones are selected to transmit information data, which can improve the flexibility of sub-bands/spectrum allocation, avoid interference and provide a variety of data rates. Given diagrams of a transmitter and receiver, the exact bit error rate (BER) of the improved system is derived. A comparison of system performance between the improved MIR UWB system and the conventional MIR UWB system is presented in different channels. Simulation results show that the improved system can achieve the same data rate and better BER performance than the conventional MIR UWB system under additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN), multipath fading and interference coexistence channels. In addition, different data transmission rates and BER performances can be easily achieved by an appropriate choice of system parameters.

This paper newly proposes and theoretically analyzes the performance of multi-hop free-space optical (FSO) systems employing optical amplify-and-forward (OAF) relaying technique and wavelength division multiplexing (WDM). The proposed system can provide a low cost, low latency, high flexibility, and large bandwidth access network for multiple users in areas where installation of optical fiber is unfavorable. In WDM/FSO systems, WDM channels suffer from the interchannel crosstalk while FSO channels can be severely affected by the atmospheric turbulence. These impairments together with the accumulation of background and amplifying noises over multiple relays significantly degrade the overall system performance. To deal with this problem, the use of the M-ary pulse position modulation (M-PPM) together with the OAF relaying technique is advocated as a powerful remedy to mitigate the effects of atmospheric turbulence. For the performance analysis, we use a realistic model of Gaussian pulse propagation to investigate major atmospheric effects, including signal turbulence and pulse broadening. We qualitatively discuss the impact of various system parameters, including the required average transmitted powers per information bit corresponding to specific values of bit error rate (BER), transmission distance, number of relays, and turbulence strength. Our numerical results are also thoroughly validated by Monte-Carlo (M-C) simulations.

Ultra-wideband (UWB) communications is used for medical information communication technology (MICT) as a dependable and safe communication technology in recent years. On the other hand, there are existing various UWB systems that are not used for MICT. Generally, these UWB systems use almost the same frequency band. Therefore, they interfere to each other in general transmission channel environment. In our previous work, a novel UWB pulse shape modulation using modified Hermite pulse is proposed as a multiple user access scheme. In this paper, we propose a mitigation method for inter-user interference and inter-system interference using combination of orthogonal pulse shape modulation and orthogonal matched filter (OMF) detector. The purposes of our system are to detect all signals of users in the same UWB system and to reduce the unknown interference from other UWB systems at the same time. This paper provides performance evaluation results based on both of analytical and numerical evaluation. Simulation results show that the proposed system can detect the signals that were transmitted from the same UWB system using orthogonal pulse set, while the proposed system can reduce the interference from unknown UWB systems at the same time. The theoretical analysis is expected that noise tolerance of our proposal will be deteriorated in the additive Gaussian noise channel in comparison with the conventional matched filter. It is confirmed that the numerical evaluation illustrates such noise tolerance equivalent to the theoretical analysis result.

We experimentally investigate the performance of a distributed Raman amplifier (DRA)-based pulse compressor for a phase modulated signal. A 10 Gb/s return-to-zero (RZ)-differential phase shift keying (DPSK) signal is compressed to picosecond range after transmission. Pulsewidth is continuously compressed in a wide range from 20 to 3.2 ps by changing the pump power of the DRA while the compressed waveforms are well-matched with sech2 function. Error-free operations at bit-error-rate (BER) of 10-9 are achieved for the compressed signals of various pulsewidths with low power penalties within 2.3 dB compared to the back-to-back. After the compression, the 10 Gb/s signal is used to generate a 40 Gb/s RZ-DPSK optical time division multiplexing (OTDM) signal. This 40 Gb/s OTDM signal is then successfully demultiplexed to 10 Gb/s DPSK signal by using an optical gate based on four-wave mixing (FWM) in a highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF).

Network coding on the physical-layer has recently been widely discussed as a potentially promising solution to the wireless access problem in a relay network. However, the existing research on physical-layer network coding (PNC), usually assumes that the symbol timing of the nodes is fully synchronized and hardly investigates the unavoidable symbol timing errors. Similar to many telecommunication systems, symbol timing plays a critical role in PNC and precise alignment has to be provided for the encoding. In this work, we propose a novel symbol timing algorithm with a low oversampling factor (samples per symbol) based on the a priori knowledge of the transmitted pulse shape. The proposed algorithm has the dual advantages of the low oversampling rate and high precision. The mean square error (MSE) performance is verified by simulations to be at least one order of magnitude better than that of the conventional optimum phase (OP) algorithm for a signal noise ratio (SNR) greater than 5dB.

We experimentally investigated the impact of the mode filtering technique on the performances of pulse amplification in a fiber with a large core diameter. The technique was applied to a femtosecond pulse amplifier, and was based on a large area double-clad Yb-doped fiber. The mode filtering enabled selective excitation of the lowest transverse mode with minimal contamination of higher order modes. The output pulses with 110 fs duration, > 30 nJ pulse energy (> 3 W average power), and clean spatial/temporal profiles were successfully generated. Benefits of this technique are also discussed.

All-optical 1-to-6 wavelength multicasting of a 10-Gb/s picosecond-tunable-width converted return-to-zero (RZ)-on-off-keying (OOK) data signal using a wideband-parametric pulse source from a distributed Raman amplifier (DRA) is experimentally demonstrated. Width-tunable wavelength multicasting within the C-band with approximately 40.6-nm of separation with various compressed RZ data signal inputs have been proposed and demonstrated. The converted multicast pulse widths can be flexibly controlled down to 2.67 ps by tuning the Raman pump powers of the DRA. Nearly equal pulse widths at all multicast wavelengths are obtained. Furthermore, wide open eye patterns and penalties less than 1.2 dB at the 10-9 bit-error-rate (BER) level are found.

A combination of nonreturn-to-zero (NRZ)-to-return-to-zero (RZ) waveform conversion and wavelength multicasting with pulsewidth tunability is experimentally demonstrated. A NRZ data signal is injected into a highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF)-based four-wave mixing (FWM) switch with four RZ clocks compressed by a Raman amplification-based multiwavelength pulse compressor (RA-MPC). The NRZ signal is multicast and converted to RZ signals in a continuously wide pulsewidth tuning range between around 12.17 and 4.68 ps by changing the Raman pump power of the RA-MPC. Error-free operations of the converted RZ signals with different pulsewidths are achieved with negative power penalties compared with the back-to-back NRZ signal and the small variation among received powers of RZ output channels at a bit-error-rate (BER) of 10-9. The NRZ-to-RZ waveform conversion and wavelength multicasting without using the RA-MPC are also successfully implemented.

In order to efficiently drive a low-power DC motor using microwave power transfer (MPT), a compact power-receiving device is developed, which consists of a rectenna array and an improved DC-DC converter with constant input resistance characteristics. Since the conversion efficiency of the rectenna is strongly affected by the output load, it is difficult to efficiently drive a dynamic load resistance device such as DC motor. Using both continuous-wave (CW) and pulsed-wave MPT, experiments are carried out on driving the DC motor whose load resistance is varying from 36 to 140 Ω. In the CW case, the measured overall efficiency of the power-receiving device is constant over 50% for the power density of 0.25 to 2.08 mW/cm2. In particular, the overall efficiency is 62%, 70.8% for the power density of 0.25, 0.98 mW/cm2 where the received power of the single antenna is 13, 50 mW, respectively. In the pulsed-wave case, the measured overall efficiency is over 44% for a duty ratio of 0.2 to 1 for the power density of 0.98 mW/cm2.
Monopulse is a classical technique for radar angle estimation and still adopted for fast angle estimation in phased array antenna. The classical formula can be applied to a 2-dimentional phased array antenna if two conditions---the unbiasedness and the independence of the azimuth and the elevation estimate---are satisfied. However, if the sum and difference beams are adapted to suppress the interference under jamming condition, they can be severely distorted. Thus the difference beams become highly correlated and violate the conditions. In this paper, we show the numerical implementation of the generalized monopulse estimation using the distorted and correlated beams, especially for a subarray configured antenna. Because we use the data from the measured subarray patterns rather than the mathematical model, this numerical method can be easily implemented for the complex array configuration and gives good performance for the uncertainty of the real system.

A readout technique using single-flux-quantum (SFQ) circuits enables superconducting single photon detectors (SSPDs) to operate at further high-speed, where a mutually-coupled dc-to-SFQ (MC-dc/SFQ) converter is used as an interface between SSPDs and SFQ circuits. In this work, we investigated pulse response of the MC-dc/SFQ converter. We employed on-chip pulse generators to evaluate pulse response of the MC-dc/SFQ converter for various pulses. The MC-dc/SFQ converter correctly operated for the pulse current with the amplitude of 52,$mu$A and the width of 179,ps. In addition, we examined influence of the pulse amplitude and width to operation of the MC-dc/SFQ converter by numerical simulation. The simulation results indicated that the MC-dc/SFQ converter had wide operation margins for pulse current with amplitudes of 30--60,$mu$A irrespective of the pulse widths.

An artificial transmission line with variable capacitors as its shunt elements, also known as a nonlinear transmission line, can be used to generate pulsed waveforms with short durations. In this work, the variable capacitors are implemented using ferroelectric materials. Analysis and experimental results of such a ferroelectric-based artificial transmission line are presented. The differential equation that describes the nonlinear transmission line is derived and solved. The analytical expression for the solitary waves propagating along the line is found. An artificial transmission line is fabricated using thin-film barium--strontium--titanate capacitors and commercially available chip inductors. The fabrication process of the ferroelectric-based artificial transmission line is described. On-wafer characterization of the line is performed. Measurement results show that, with proper dc bias and substantial input power, a sinusoidal input waveform turns into a bell-shaped pulse train at the output, demonstrating the pulse-shaping capability of the ferroelectric-based artificial transmission line.
In the impulse noise removal from a color image, vector filters are suitable for suppressing false color generation. However, the vector filters do not select optimal vectors to restore noise corrupted pixels. To cope with this problem, a cost function-based vector filter is proposed in this letter.

We demonstrate an all-optical non-return-to-zero differential phase shift keying (NRZ-DPSK) to return-to-zero differential phase shift keying (RZ-DPSK) format conversion with wavelength-shift-free and pulsewidth tunable operations by using a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA)-based switch. An NRZ-DPSK signal is injected into the SOA-based switch with an RZ clock, and is converted to RZ-DPSK signal owing to the nonlinear effects inside the SOA. In this scheme, the wavelength of the converted RZ-DPSK signal is maintained as the original wavelength of the input NRZ-DPSK signal during the format conversion. Moreover, the pulsewidth of the converted signal is tunable in a wider operating range from 30 to 60 ps. The format conversion with pulsewidth tunability is based on cross-phase modulation (XPM) and cross-gain modulation (XGM) effects in the SOA. The clear eye diagrams, optical spectra and the bit-error-rate (BER) characteristics show high conversion performance with the wide pulsewidth tuning range. For all cases of the converted RZ-DPSK signal with different pulsewidths, the receiver sensitivities at a BER of 10$^{-9}$ for the converted RZ-DPSK signal were 0.7 to 1.5 dB higher than the receiver sensitivity of the input NRZ-DPSK signal.

This paper presents a measurement circuit structure for capturing SET pulse-width suppressing pulse-width modulation and within-die process variation effects. For mitigating pulse-width modulation while maintaining area efficiency, the proposed circuit uses massively parallelized short inverter chains as a target circuit. Moreover, for each inverter chain on each die, pulse-width calibration is performed. In measurements, narrow SET pulses ranging 5ps to 215ps were obtained. We confirm that an overestimation of pulse-width may happen when ignoring die-to-die and within-die variation of the measurement circuit. Our evaluation results thus point out that calibration for within-die variation in addition to die-to-die variation of the measurement circuit is indispensable.

This letter presents a novel method based on sparsity, to solve the problem of deinterleaving pulse trains. The proposed method models the problem of deinterleaving pulse trains as an underdetermined system of linear equations. After determining the mixing matrix, we find sparsest solution of an underdetermined system of linear equations using basis pursuit denoising. This method is superior to previous ones in a number of aspects. First, spurious and missing pulses would not cause any performance reduction in the algorithm. Second, the algorithm works well despite the type of pulse repetition interval modulation that is used. Third, the proposed method is able to separate similar sources.

A new digital controller for a single-phase boost power factor correction (PFC) converter operating at a discontinuous conduction mode (DCM), is presented to achieve high input power factor over wide input voltage and load range. A method of duty cycle modulation is proposed to reduce the line harmonic distortion and improve the power factor. The loop regulation scheme is adopted to further improve the system stability and the power factor simultaneously. Meanwhile, a novel digital pulse width modulator (DPWM) based on the delay lock loop technique, is realized to improve the regulation linearity of duty cycle and reduce the regulation deviation. The single-phase DCM boost PFC converter with the proposed digital controller based on the field programmable gate array (FPGA) has been implemented. Experimental results indicate that the proposed digital controller can achieve high power factor more than 0.99 over wide input voltage and load range, the output voltage deviation is less than 3V, and the peak conversion efficiency is 96.2% in the case of a full load.
