In this paper, we report a new approach about parsing and searching problem for a given phonetic lattice. The approach is based on the Divide and Conquer (DC) strategy. By dividing the phonetic lattice, we first construct a PD-tree to represent this lattice, then, we parse through this PD-tree to identify the possible sentence which is supposed to be the speech utterance. Next, we propose a new search scheme called Downward Request (DR) search model to decrease the computation costs, and this search model gives us the optimal or N-best solutions. Experiments performed on Chinese speech recognition show us the good results.
This paper studies congestion control schemes for integrated variable bit-rate (VBR) video and data communications, where the quality of service (QOS) of each medium needs to be satisfied. In order to control congestion, we exert here either dynamic resolution control or QOS control. The dynamic resolution control scheme in this paper dynamically changes the temporal or spatial resolution of video according to the network loads. The QOS control scheme here assigns a constant capacity of buffer to each connection and determines the video resolution in order to guarantee the QOS of each medium at the connection establishment. The performance of these schemes is evaluated through simulation in terms of throughput, video frame delay probability distribution, and video frame loss rate. We also examine the effects of priority scheduling and packet discarding on the performance. Numerical results indicate that both dynamic resolution and QOS control attain low delay jitters as well as large video and data throughput. In particular, the QOS control is shown to be more suitable for integrated VBR video and data communications.

Over the last decade, the Internet has been extremely successful by distinguishing between overlaying applications and underlying networking technologies. This approach allows rapid and independent improvement in both networking and application technologies. The internetworking layer that divides applications and the network enables the Internet to function as a general and evolving infrastructures for data communications. The current Internet architecture offers only best-effort data delivery. However, recent emerging computer and networking technologies, demand the Internet guaranteed performance. In particular, audio and video applications have more rigid delay requirement than those applications which the current Internet supports. To offer guaranteed services in addition to best-effort services, both a new service model and a new architecture are necessary in the Internet architecture. The paper surveys researches and experiments conducted in the Internet community to accommodate a wide variety of qualities of services.

We analyze all-optical switching property of a nonlinear directional coupler (NLDC) having an MQW coupling layer with both nonlinear and linear losses, and examine the effect of nonlinear losses. We use the Galerkin finite element method accompanied by a prodictor-corrector algorithm. The propagation loss along the strongly-coupled NLDC decreases with increasing nonlinear absorption coefficient due to saturation in absorption. A propagation loss of 8.18 dB or 2.38 dB in the bar state of the cross state is much smaller than the bulk loss of MQW structure which exceeds 50 dB. The nonlinear losses lengthen the coupling length and bring it close to that of a lossfree NLDC, while the linear losses shorten. It is found that the property of the cross state is greatly improved by counting the nonlinear losses: The cross-state output power and the output power ratio of two waveguides increase, and the cross state input power, that is, the switching power decreases.

In this paper, we propose an efficient method (called DIRIC algorithm) to allocate carrier frequencies so as to minimize intermodulation products in two-level SCPC systems in which Hub station and many Remote stations communicate each other through satellite transponder. We also present a very efficient method to evaluate intermodulation products with substantially reduced CPU time in two-level SCPC systems. We compare and analyze the performance of several frequency allocation methods to extend DELINS-INSDEL algorithm (which is proposed by Okinaka) to two-level SCPC systems. When the proposed algorithm is applied to systems with modulated carrier, it is verified that this algorithm has the same efficiency as the unmodulated carrier. It is also shown heuristically that certain initial assignment algorithms perform better than random assignment.
A key element in the CDMA transmission is DS spreading. Spreading in a DS/SSMA system are provided in two categories-synchronization and data. For synchronization sequences, good auto-correlation and cross-correlation properties are required in order to guarantee fast acquistion with a minimum false alarm probability. On the other hand, the auto-correlation property may not be so important in data spreading since synchronization is obtained by synchronization spreading. In this paper we provide a set of synchronization sequences and a set of data sequences--each a set of binary N-tuples--that have the necessary correlation constraints.

It has become more important to reduce the protocol implementation costs as the functions of protocols have become more abundant. The protocol implementation tools which automatically generate a protocol program from a specification described by an FDT (Formal Description Technique) are very promising. Selecting SDL as a target FDT, we have developed an SDL-based protocol implementation tool which consists of a process scheduler and a compiler. Since the efficient SDL process execution is a key to generating the high-speed program, the scheduler is introduced. It provides the mechanism which executes SDL processes concurrently as light-weight-processes. It optimizes so that as few context switches take places as possible. The compiler converts as many kinds of SDL functions whose behaviors can be determined at compile time into programming language statements as possible. These elaborations are so successful that the tool can generate an efficient program. The OSI Transport protocol class 0 program generated by the compiler can process more than 500 packets per second on a 6MIPS workstation.
This paper discusses a CMOS differential-difference amplifier circuit suitable for low voltage operation. A new multiple weighted input transconductor circuit structure is suggested to be use in DDA implementation. The proposed DDA can be employed in several analog/digital systems to improve their parameters. Selected examples of the proposed transconductor/DDA applications are also discussed.

We developed an eye-contact technique using a blazed half-transparent mirror (BHM), which is a micro-HM array arranged on the display surface, to make a compact eye-contact videophone. This paper describes a new BHM structure that eliminates ghosts and improves image quality. In the new BHM, the reflection and transmission areas are separated to exclude ghosts from appearing in the captured image. We evaluated the characteristics of the captured and displayed images. The results show that the contrast ratio of the captured image and the brightness of both captured and displayed images are much better than with the previous BHM.

The performance of the hybrid-ARQ scheme with a convolutional code, in which the retransmission criterion is based on an estimated decoding error rate, is evaluated for moderately time-varying channels. It is shown by computer simulations that the simple average diversity combining scheme can almost attain the same performance as the optimally weighted diversity combining scheme. For the whole and partial retransmission schemes with the average diversity combining, the theoretical bounds of throughput and bit error rate are derived, and it is shown that their bounds are tight and the treated schemes can attain a given error rate with good throughput for moderately time-varying channels. Furthermore, the throughput is shown to be improved by the partial retransmission scheme compared with the whole retransmission scheme.
We have done a computer search for solutions of the equation x3y3z3n in the range max (|x|, |y|, |z|) 3414387 and 0 n 1000. We have discovered 21 new integer solutions for n {39, 143, 180, 231, 312, 321, 367, 439, 462, 516, 542, 556, 660, 663, 754, 777, 870}. As a result, there are 52 values of n (except n 4 (mod9)) for which no solutions are found.
In this report, we propose a robust block adaptive digital filter (BADF) which can improve the accuracy of the estimated weights by averaging the adaptive weight vectors. We show that the improvement of the estimated weights is independent of the input signal correlation.

Dynamic Term Rewriting Calculus (DTRC) is a new computation model aiming at formal description and verification of algorithms treating Term Rewriting Systems (TRSs). In this paper, we show that we can use DTRC to mechanize explicit induction for proving an inductive theorem, that is, we can translate the statements of base and induction steps for proving by induction into a DTRC term. The translation reduces the proof of the statements into the evaluation of the corresponding DTRC term.

The efficiency of a guided-probe fault location process is affected by the number of the probed lines. This number depends on the size of the target area and the method by which a line is selected for probing. This paper presents a method for reducing the size of the target area in a sequential circuit by introducing the concepts of Type- and Type- faults. This paper also presents a method of selecting lines for probing in a more efficient way. The efficiency of the proposed methods is demonstrated by experimental results.

On mutually coupling lines, the transmission signal is dispersively propagated by crosstalk coupling between lines and shows complex propagation characteristics caused by reciprocal reflections. Usually, the differential equation and the integral equation have been applied to analyze the solutions of transmission lines. In this paper, we propose a different analytical method of the propagation characteristics of signal and crosstalk noise. By setting up crosstalk coupling line as a sectionally divided digital transmission network and by using the signal flow graph and the difference equation, the propagation characteristics in the frequency domain, the space domain and the time domain on mutually coupling lines can be obtained. To verify the validity of this method and analyze the complex propagation problems, we first study the crosstalk characteristics of a twisted pair cable via the third circuit by unidirectional coupling. Subsequently we will analyze the coupling theory of bidirectional coupling lines.

It has become very important to study the lightning surges that were induced in subscriber telecommunication equipment because of the increase of susceptible circuits to the over voltage. The test generator is desire to be developed evaluating the resistibility of equipments against lightning surges. This paper proposes a new lightning-test method for subscriber telecommunication equipment. The waveform of the test generator simulates that of the induced lightning surge voltage caused by a nearby return stroke. The output impedance of the surge generator is determined to match the common-mode impedance of telecommunication lines. The damaged condition of circuit parts and the trouble occurrence rate estimated by using this method agree well with actual observations.

We present a design chart and a manufacturing process for mm-wave absorber consisting of two spacers (poly-carbonate) and two-resistive sheets (polyethylene terephthalate deposited with Indium Tin Oxide). The conventional design chart gives us necessary information to make a desirable absorber. Based on the design chart, a multi-layered type absorber was manufactured and it is concluded that a significant absorption level (-20dB) is attained at a wide-frequency range of 46-66GHz.
In this paper, a new off-line handwritten word recognition method based on the explicit modeling of character junctures is presented. A handwritten word is regarded as a sequence of characters and junctures of four types. Hence both characters and junctures are explicitly modeled. A handwriting system employing hidden Markov models as the main statistical framework has been developed based on this scheme. An interconnection network of character and ligature models is constructed to model words of indefinite length. This model can ideally describe any form of hamdwritten words including discretely spaced words, pure cursive words, and unconstrained words of mixed styles. Also presented are efficient encoding and decoding schemes suitable for this model. The system has shown encouraging performance with a standard USPS database.

A method is described for approximately estimating the surface specific-absorption-rate (SAR) in an anatomically realistic model of the human head for microwave exposure using the external magnetic near-field. The finite-difference time-domain (FD-TD) technique is used to compute the electromagnetic fields in the head model for 750-MHz and 1.5-GHz far-field exposures with the 1991 ANSI specified safety level. The spatial pattern tracking between the one-gram averaged surface-SAR and external magnetic near-field is demonstrated on the horizontal cross sectional perimeter of the head model. The regression coefficients between them are also obtained on the fifty-five horizontal cross sectional perimeters, which could give an approximate value of the surface-SAR in an acutual head, if the external magnetic near-field would be measured. This is validated by the theoretical results in a semi-infinite homogeneous flat model for normal incidence microwave exposure.
