    A 0.1-µm gate-length GaAs MESFET technology is reported. A 48.3-GHz dynamic-frequency divider, and an amplifier with 20-dB gain and 17.5-GHz bandwidth are successfully fabricated by integrating over-100-GHz-cut-off frequency MESFETs using a new lightly-doped drain structure with a buried p-layer (BP-LDD) device structure.

    There are three viewpoints involved in software project management: process management, quality management and cost management. Software projects must be managed on the basis of these three viewpoints. However, in many cases process management, quality management and cost management systems are built separately as individual systems respectively. Construction of software project management systems which these three functions are integrated has been rare. Therefore, in order to construct a system integrating these functions, the authors clarify the significance of integration of application systems. And then the authors unveil the structure of a software project management system that process management system, quality management system and cost management system are integrated by using an object oriented database.

    In this paper, we propose a new approach to speaker independent isolated-word speech recognition using multisegment multiple vector quantization (VQ) codebooks. In this approach, words are recognized by means of multisegment multiple VQ codebooks, a separate multisegment multiple VQ codebooks are designed for each word in the recognition vocabulary by dividing equally the word into multiple segments which is correlative with number of syllables or phonemes of the word, and designing two individual VQ codebooks consisting of both instantaneous and transitional speech features for each segment. Using this approach, the influence of the within-word coarticulation can be minimized, the time-sequence information of speech can be used, and the word length differences in the vocabulary or speaking rates variations can be adapted automatically. Moreover, the mel-cepstral coefficients based on unbiased estimation of log spectrum (UELS) are used, and comparison experiment with LPC derived mel cepstral coefficients is made. Recognition experiments Using testing databases consisting of 100 Japanese words (Waseda database) and 216 phonetically balanced words (ATR database), confirmed the effectiveness of the new method and the new speech features. The approach is described, computational complexity as well as memory requirements are analyzed, the experimental results are presented.

  • Non-coherent Reception of M-ary Spread-Spectrum Signals in the Presence of Carrier Frequency Offset

    This paper discusses the performance of non-coherent reception for M-ary spread-spectrum (M-ary/SS) signals in the presence of carrier frequency offset. In general, the M-ary/SS scheme is expected to be of higher spectral efficiency than the conventional DS/SS schemes, but its performance may be degraded by the carrier frequency offset. We, therefore, analyze the effect of carrier frequency offset on the performance of the non-coherent M-ary/SS system with orthogonal modulation using a set of sequences generated by the Hadamard matrix. As a result of the analysis, it has been found that the carrier frequency offset may cause a great deal of degradation in the performance, and that its effect has a distinctive property which is due to the characteristic of Hadamard matrix, at the same time. Making use of this property, we propose two schemes that can mitigate the effect of carrier frequency offset: one is based on choise of the code sequences, the other is on the error correcting code. The effectiveness of the schemes is evaluated in the terms of symbol-error-rates through analysis and computer simulation.

    This paper proposes a technique for estimating the harmonic frequencies based on instantaneous frequency (IF) of speech signals. The main problem is how to decompose the speech signal into the harmonic components. For this purpose, we use a set of bandpass-filters, each of whose center frequencies changes with time in order to track the instantaneous freuency of its output. As a result, the outputs of the band-pass filters become the harmonic components, and the instantaneous frequencies of the harmonics are accurately estimated. To evaluate the effectiveness of the approach, we apply it to pitch determination of speech. Pitch determination is simply accomplished by selecting the correct fundamental frequency out of the harmonic components. It is confirmed that the pitch extraction using the proposed pitch determination algorithm (PDA) is stable and accurate. The most significant feature of the PDA is that the extracted pitch contour is smooth and it requires no post-processing such as nonlinear filtering or any smoothing processes. Several examples are presented to demonstrate the capability of the harmonics estimation technique and the PDA.

    In this work, we present an 8-state trellis code for bit interleaved 16-QAM and the BER performance on Rayleigh fading channel is evaluated. We analyze the BER and show that the effective code length and minimum productive distance are also important criterion for code design on bit interleaved system. We design the code by considering not only minimum Hamming distance but also the effective code length and minimum productive distance. As a result, we found that the scheme employing the code achieves good BER performance on Rayleigh fading channel even with the finite interleaving size.

    This paper discusses crystal-growth and device-design issues associated with the development of high-performance InP/InGaAs heretostructure bipolar transistors (HBTs). It is shown that a highly Si-doped n+-subcollector in the HBT structure causes anomalous Zn redistribution during metalorganic vapor phase epitaxial (MOVPE) growth. A thermodynamical model of and a useful solution to this big problem are presented. A novel hybrid structure consisting of an abrupt emitter-base heterojunction and a compositionally-graded base is shown to enhance nonequilibrium base transport and thereby increase current gain and cutoff frequency fT. A double-heterostructure bipolar transistor (DHBT) with a step-graded InGaAsP collector can improve collector breakdown behavior without any speed penalty. We also elucidate the effect of emitter size shrinkage on high-frequency performance. Maximum oscillation frequency fmax in excess of 250 GHz is reported.

    The two-dimensional scattering problem of electromagnetic waves by a perfectly conducting wedge is analyzed by means of the Wiener-Hopf technique together with the formulation using the partition of scatterers. The Wiener-Hopf equations are derived on two complex planes. Investigating the mapping between these complex planes and introducing the appropriate functions which satisfy the edge condition of the wedge, the solutions of these equations are obtained by the decomposition procedure of functions. By deforming the integration path of the Fourier inverse transform, it is found that the representation of the scattered wave is in agreement with the integral representation using the Sommerfeld contours.

    This paper establishes a general relation between the two-dimensional Least Mean Square (2-D LMS) algorithm and 2-D discrete orthogonal transforms. It is shown that the 2-D LMS algorithm can be used to compute the forward as well as the inverse 2-D orthogonal transforms in general for any input by suitable choice of the adaptation speed. Simulations are presented to verify the general relationship results.

    It is known that a family of p-ary bent sequences, whose elements take values of GF (p) with a prime p, possesses low periodic correlation properties and high linear span. Firstly such a family is shown to consist of balanced sequences in the sense that the frequency of appearances in one period is the same for each nonzero element and once less for zero element. Secondly the exact distribution of the periodic correlation values is given for the family.

    The influence of cochannel, adjacent channel and intermodulation constraints on the capacity of the frequency band in the dynamic channel allocation problem is estimated. Algorithms including a backtracking phase with partial reassignment of currently assigned requirements are proposed. Numerical examples show a strong possibility of a 20% capacity improvement compared to the conventional strategies.

    A quasi-synchronous (QS) code division multiple access (CDMA) system is proposed for mobile communications. In the proposed method, which uses the time division duplex (TDD) mode of transmission, a mobile receiver can measure propagation delay changes. It then accordingly adjusts its transmission time so its signal can arrive at base station synchronously with other mobile units. A simple control unit is used at the mobile unit in order to reduce any error due to the propagation delay changes. The system operates as follows. At the start of a call, a mobile unit is quasi-synchronised through feedback control from the base station. The mobile unit then maintains synchronous status without any further base station feedback. The degree of the quasi-synchronous accuracy is determined by a clock in mobile units. This paper shows performance results based on using a clock rate of ten times faster than the spreading rate. Orthogonal codes are used for spreading the signals. The results demonstrate that the reverse link CDMA multiuser interference is to a great degree removed.

  • A Requirement Description Approach in Natural Language Based on Communication Service Knowledge

    This paper proposes a requirement description and elicitation approach for communication services. Requirements are described in natural language, refined with a knowledge base, and converted to a formal language for program generation. A model for communication services is made as a set of three items: terminal state, terminal action and the response of the communication system to the action. This set, in turn, corresponds to natural language syntax that expresses two conditions (terminal state and action) and their result. These conditions and result are expressed as a sequence of simple sentences that describe the relationship between a terminal and a communication system. Thus, by defining such a description style to reflect the features of communication services, it should be possible to achieve both a high level of description and mechanical processing capabilities at the same time. However, requirement descriptions usually include omission and inconsistency. This problem cannot be solved by merely introducing natural language for the descriptions. Knowledge about the target domain of requirements is needed to resolve it. This paper reports on a knowledge base that stores constraints existing between conditions and results in communication services. This knowledge base is shown to be effective in supplementing omissions and resolving inconsistency. This paper also presents a technique for converting the elicited requirements in natural language to descriptions in a formal language that can be used to generate a program.

  • Spectrum Scrambling by Means of QMF Banks for Secure Communication

    Spectrum scrambling can be applied in vehicle telephones for more secure communication. This letter shows a spectrum scrambling method using real coefficients M band uniform QMF banks. Once QMF banks are designed, spectrum scrambling filters can be realized with simpler procedures. By introducing selectors in the filters, the scrambling scheme may be easily varied in real time processing. Design examples and experimental simulations are included.

  • Spatial and Temporal Equalization Based on an Adaptive Tapped-Delay-Line Array Antenna

    This paper describes a spatial and temporal multipath channel model which is useful in array antenna environments for mobile radio communications. From this model, a no distortion criterion, that is an extension of the Nyquist criterion, is derived for equalization in both spatial and temporal domains. An adaptive tapped-delay-line (TDL) array antenna is used as a tool for equalization in both spatial and temporal domains. Several criterion for such spatial and temporal equalization such as ZF (Zero Forcing) and MSE (Mean Square Error), are available to update the weights and tap coefficients. In this paper, we discuss the optimum weights based on the ZF criterion in both spatial and temporal domains. Since the ZF criterion satisfies the Nyquist criterion in case of noise free, this paper applies the ZF criterion for the spatial and temporal equalization as a simple case. The Z transform is applied to represent the spatial and temporal model of the multipath channel and to derive the optimal weights of the TDL array antenna. However, in some cases the optimal antenna weights cannot be decided uniquely. Therefore, the effect on the equalization errors due to a finite number of antenna elements and tap coefficients can be shown numerically by computer simulations.

    This paper describes a system that can enchance the speech quality degradation due to severe band limitation during speech transmission. We have already proposed a spectrum widening method that utilizes aliasing in sampling rate conversion and digital filtering for spectrum shaping. This paper proposes a new method that offers improved performance in terms of the spectrum distortion characteristics. Implementation procedures are clarified, and its performance is discussed. The proposed method can effectively enhance speech quality.

    This paper condiders a problem of logecal configuration in reconfigurable VCDN (Virtual Circuit Data Networks) which is analyzed through a mimimax approach, and its objective is to minimize the largest delay on any logical link, measured in both queueing delay and propagation delay. The problem is formulated as a 0/1 mixed integer programming and analyzed by decomposing it into two subproblems, called routing and dimensioning problems, for which an efficient hauristic algorithm is proposed in an iterating process made beween the two subproblems for solution improvement. The algorithm is tested for its performance eveluation.

    Multifrequency microwave radiometry has been investigated for non-invasive measurement of temperatures in a human body. In this paper, we propose a new temperature profile model function, which is based on thermo-physiological considerations, for use in model fitting method of retrieving a temperature profile from a set of multifrequency radiometric data. The microwave radiometric technique using the new model function was tested by numerical simulations against animal experiment and clinical data reported elsewhere. The results show that the microwave radiometric technique can be used effectively to measure temperature profiles in tissues over a depth range from 0 to about 4.5 cm.

  • Symbol Rate Controlled Adaptive Modulation/TDMA/TDD for Wireless Personal Communication Systems

    This paper proposes a symbol rate controlled adaptive modulation/TDMA/TDD for future wireless personal communication systems. The proposed system controls the symbol rate according to the channel conditions to achieve wide dynamic range of the modulation parameter control as well as to improve the delay spread immunity. The main purpose of the proposed system is to increase the data throughput with keeping a certain transmission quality, especially in frequency selective fading environments. For this purpose, the proposed system predicts the C/N0 (carrier power-to-noise spectral density ratio) and the delay spread separately, and selects the optimum symbol rate that gives the maximum bit rate within a given bandwidth satisfying the required BER. The simulated results show that the proposed system can achieve higher transmission quality in comparison with the fixed symbol rate transmission system in both flat Rayleigh and frequency selective fading environments. The results also show that the proposed system is very effective to achieve higher bit rate transmission in frequency selective fading environments.

  • Equiripple Design of QMF Banks Using Digital Allpass Networks

    In this paper, we discuss design of quadrature mirror filter (QMF) banks using digital allpass networks in the frequency domain. In the QMF banks composed of a parallel connection of two allpass networks, both aliasing error and amplitude distortion are always completely canceled. Therefore, we only need to design the analysis filters and eliminate phase distortion of the overall transfer function. We consider design of the QMF banks in two cases where phase responses of the filters are repuired or not required. In the case where the phase responses are not required, the design problem can be reduced to design of phase difference of two allpass networks. In the case where the phase responses are required, we present a procedure for designing the QMF banks with both equiripple magnitude and phase responses.
