  • Improved Measurement Accuracy of a Laser Interferometer: Extended Kalman Filter Approach

    In this paper a nonlinearity compensation algorithm based on the extended Kalman filter is proposed to improve the measurement accuracy of a heterodyne laser interferometer. The heterodyne laser interferometer is used for ultra-precision measurements such as those used in semiconductor manufacturing. However the periodical nonlinearity property caused by frequency-mixing restricts the accuracy of the nanometric measurements. In order to minimize the effect of the nonlinearity, the measurement process of the laser interferometer is modeled as a state equation and the extended Kalman filtering approach is applied to the process. The effectiveness of our proposed algorithm is demonstrated by comparing the results of the algorithm with experimental results for the laser system.

    Regression analysis that incorporates measurement errors in input variables is important in various applications. In this study, we consider this problem within a framework of Gaussian process regression. The proposed method can also be regarded as a generalization of kernel regression to include errors in regressors. A Markov chain Monte Carlo method is introduced, where the infinite-dimensionality of Gaussian process is dealt with a trick to exchange the order of sampling of the latent variable and the function. The proposed method is tested with artificial data.

    In this paper a new electromagnetic (EM) interference analysis is proposed using the total harmonic distortion (THD) measurement of the audio signal by the 900 MHz cordless telephones. The cordless telephone network in 900 MHz was built up to be weak in EM interference. 400 and 800 Hz of the sine-wave signal were used in transmitter (TX) system, and the receiver (RX) system was exposed to the EM interference. The THD value varies as the level of the exposed EM interference changes. The model of the cordless telephone also affects the THD value. By using fluctuation of the THD value depending on the amount of the exposure, the threshold value of the interference electric field strength was derived. Based on the derived threshold value of the electric field strength, validity of the regulation value for low power radio devices by CISPR 22 [CLASS B] and FCC is discussed.

    Requirements changes sometimes cause a project to fail. A lot of projects now follow incremental development processes so that new requirements and requirements changes can be incorporated as soon as possible. These processes are called integrated requirements processes, which function to integrate requirements processes with other developmental processes. We have quantitatively and qualitatively investigated the requirements processes of a specific project from beginning to end. Our focus is to clarify the types of necessary requirements based on the components contained within a certain portion of the software architecture. Further, each type reveals its typical requirements processes through its own rationale. This case study is a system to manage the orders and services of a restaurant. In this paper, we introduce the case and categorize its requirements processes based on the components of the system and the qualitative characteristics of ISO-9126. We could identify seven categories of the typical requirements process to be managed and/or controlled. Each category reveals its typical requirements processes and their characteristics. The case study is our first step of practical integrated requirements engineering.

    This paper describes a time-domain expression based on the physical model of power amplifiers where electric memory effect is considered to be caused by even-order nonlinearity and bias impedance. It is demonstrated that the time-domain expression is consistent with the general memory polynomial reported by D.R. Morgan et al. To confirm validity of the physical model, a simple method is proposed to measure amplitude and phase of IMD by two tone test: the phase is extracted from measured small signal S-parameters of the amplifier under test. The method is applied to a GaN FET amplifier under condition that memory effect is enhanced by applying inductive cable for DC supply. Frequency dependent IMD is fitted by a parallel connection of L, C, and R: it has been confirmed that the frequency dependence of IMD is given by the bias impedance at even order harmonics of envelope frequency. The frequency dependence assures the validity of the physical model as well as the time-domain expression.

    Correction factors are presented for estimating the RF electromagnetic field strength in the compliance assessment of human exposure from an indoor RF radio source in the frequency range from 800 MHz to 3.5 GHz. The correction factors are derived from the increase in the spatial average electric field strength distribution, which is dependent on the building materials. The spatial average electric field strength is calculated using relative complex dielectric constants of building materials. The relative complex dielectric constant is obtained through measurement of the transmission and reflection losses for eleven kinds of building materials used in business office buildings and single family dwellings.

    The tiled-display system has been used as a Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) environment, in which multiple local (and/or remote) participants cooperate using some shared applications whose outputs are displayed on a large-scale and high-resolution tiled-display, which is controlled by a cluster of PC's, one PC per display. In order to make the collaboration effective, each remote participant should be aware of all CSCW activities on the titled display system in real-time. This paper presents a capturing and delivering mechanism of all activities on titled-display system to remote participants in real-time. In the proposed mechanism, the screen images of all PC's are periodically captured and delivered to the Merging Server that maintains separate buffers to store the captured images from the PCs. The mechanism selects one tile image from each buffer, merges the images to make a screen shot of the whole tiled-display, clips a Region of Interest (ROI), compresses and streams it to remote participants in real-time. A technical challenge in the proposed mechanism is how to select a set of tile images, one from each buffer, for merging so that the tile images displayed at the same time on the tiled-display can be properly merged together. This paper presents three selection algorithms; a sequential selection algorithm, a capturing time based algorithm, and a capturing time and visual consistency based algorithm. It also proposes a mechanism of providing several virtual cameras on tiled-display system to remote participants by concurrently clipping several different ROI's from the same merged tiled-display images, and delivering them after compressing with video encoders requested by the remote participants. By interactively changing and resizing his/her own ROI, a remote participant can check the activities on the tiled-display effectively. Experiments on a 32 tiled-display system show that the proposed merging algorithm can build a tiled-display image stream synchronously, and the ROI-based clipping and delivering mechanism can provide individual views on the tiled-display system to multiple remote participants in real-time.

  • Frequency Dependence Measurements of Complex Permittivity of Dielectric Plates Using TE0m1 Modes in a Circular Cavity

    A circular cavity resonance method is improved to measure the frequency dependence of complex permittivity of a dielectric plate by using multimode TE0m1 with integer m. The measurement principle is based on a rigorous analysis by the Ritz-Galerkin method. A new circular cavity with lowered height is designed from a mode chart of a cavity to decrease the number of unwanted modes near the TE0m1 modes. A copper cavity having 20 GHz for the TE011 mode was constructed based on this design. For glass cloth PTFE, RT/duroid 6010 and FR-4 dielectric plates, the frequency dependences are measured from resonant frequencies for the TE0m1 (m = 1, 2, 3 ...) modes. These measured results agree well with ones measured by using the conventional four different size cavities with TE011 mode. It is verified that the designed cavity structure is useful to measure the frequency dependence of low loss dielectric plates.

    The aim of this study is to develop a new whole-body averaged specific absorption rate (SAR) estimation method based on the external-cylindrical field scanning technique. This technique is adopted with the goal of simplifying the dosimetry estimation of human phantoms that have different postures or sizes. An experimental scaled model system is constructed. In order to examine the validity of the proposed method for realistic human models, we discuss the pros and cons of measurements and numerical analyses based on the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. We consider the anatomical European human phantoms and plane-wave in the 2 GHz mobile phone frequency band. The measured whole-body averaged SAR results obtained by the proposed method are compared with the results of the FDTD analyses.

    This paper proposes and verifies a specific absorption rate (SAR) measurement procedure for multi-antenna transmitters that requires measurement of two-dimensional electric field distributions for the number of antennas and calculation in order to obtain the three-dimensional SAR distributions for arbitrary weighting coefficients of the antennas prior to determining the average SAR. The proposed procedure is verified based on Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) calculation and measurement using electro-optic (EO) probes. For two reference dipoles, the differences in the 10 g SAR obtained based on the proposed procedure compared numerically and experimentally to that based on the original calculated three-dimensional SAR distribution are at most 4.8% and 3.6%, respectively, at 1950 MHz. At 3500 MHz, this difference is at most 5.2% in the numerical verification.

    The Waveguide-Penetration method is a permittivity measurement technique where a columnar object pierces a rectangular waveguide through a pair of holes at the center of its broad walls. The permittivity of the object is estimated from measured S-parameters . This paper demonstrates a scheme for analyzing permittivity measurement errors in the Waveguide-Penetration method. The sources of errors are categorized into systematic and random error sources. Systematic errors in the values of the sample and waveguide holes diameters, the effect of sample's length, and the influence of ambient temperature are investigated and corrected for. Potential random error sources such as imperfect TRL calibration elements, VNA thermal noise, sample loading, and test-port cable flexure are analyzed and their contribution to random errors are estimated.

    This paper shows experimental results of packet error rates (PERs) in wireless-LAN mounted printed circuit boards and gives a discussion on a mechanism of electromagnetic noise coupling that affects the PER. We utilized the amplitude probability distribution to investigate the noise coupling channel. We measured the magnetic near-field distribution to obtain information about noise sources. Based on measurement results, we also performed parallel plate resonance analysis to find out electromagnetic interference antennas. We confirmed that noise radiates from a power supply system of a digital circuit and its coupling to a receiving antenna causes an increase of the PER.

    This letter proposes an Ultra WideBand (UWB) channel gain estimation algorithm that is based on frequency response correlation. From data measured in indoor and outdoor environments, the frequency correlation statistics of the UWB channel are characterized by correlation coefficients, which are represented as functions of the frequency separation according to the propagation environments. We use empirically established correlation coefficient models to develop the proposed channel gain estimation algorithm. In this algorithm, unknown channel gains of intermediate frequencies are estimated from known channel gains of neighboring reference frequencies. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated against various configurations of reference frequencies and compared with that of a conventional estimation algorithm using a linear interpolation scheme.

    This paper proposes a de-embedding method for on-chip S-parameter measurements at mm-wave frequency. The proposed method uses only two transmission lines with different length. In the proposed method, a parasitic-component model extracted from two transmission lines can be used for de-embedding for other-type DUTs like transistor, capacitor, inductor, etc. The experimental results show that the error in characteristic impedance between the different-length transmission lines is less than 0.7% above 40 GHz. The extracted pad model is also shown.

  • Key Generation for Fast Inversion of the Paillier Encryption Function

    We study fast inversion of the Paillier encryption function. Especially, we focus only on key generation, and do not modify the Paillier encryption function. We propose three key generation algorithms based on the speeding-up techniques for the RSA encryption function. By using our algorithms, the size of the private CRT exponent is half of that of Paillier-CRT. The first algorithm employs the extended Euclidean algorithm. The second algorithm employs factoring algorithms, and can construct the private CRT exponent with low Hamming weight. The third algorithm is a variant of the second one, and has some advantage such as compression of the private CRT exponent and no requirement for factoring algorithms. We also propose the settings of the parameters for these algorithms and analyze the security of the Paillier encryption function by these algorithms against known attacks. Finally, we give experimental results of our algorithms.

    Deploying and managing content objects efficiently is critical for building a scalable and transparent content delivery system. This paper investigates the advanced incremental deploying problem of which the objects are delivered in a successive manner. Recently, the researchers show that the minimum-cost content deployment can be obtained by reducing the problem to the well-known network flow problem. In this paper, the maximum flow algorithm for a single graph is extended to the incremental growing graph. Based on this extension, an efficient incremental content deployment algorithm is developed in this work.

    We propose an incremental relaying protocol in conjunction with partial relay selection with the aim of making efficient use of the degrees of freedom of the channels as well as improving the performance of dual hop relaying with partial relay selection (DRPRS). Specifically, whenever the direct link from the source to the destination is not favorable to decoding, the destination will request the help of the opportunistic relay providing highest SNR of the links from the source. Theoretical analyses, as well as simulation results, verify that our scheme outperforms the DRPRS scheme in terms of bit error probability.

    Inductive theorem proving plays an important role in the field of formal verification of systems. The rewriting induction (RI) is a method for inductive theorem proving proposed by Reddy. In order to obtain successful proofs, it is very important to choose appropriate contexts (such as in which direction each equation should be oriented) when applying RI inference rules. If the choice is not appropriate, the procedure may diverge or the users have to come up with several lemmas to prove together with the main theorem. Therefore we have a good reason to consider parallel execution of several instances of the rewriting induction procedure, each in charge of a distinguished single context in search of a successful proof. In this paper, we propose a new procedure, called multi-context rewriting induction, which efficiently simulates parallel execution of rewriting induction procedures in a single process, based on the idea of the multi-completion procedure. By the experiments with a well-known problem set, we discuss the effectiveness of the proposed procedure when searching along various contexts for a successful inductive proof.

  • A Robust State Observer Using Multiple Integrators for Multivariable LTI Systems

    This paper proposes a robust state observer for multi-input multi-output LTI systems. Unknown inputs of polynomial form and high-frequency measurement noises are considered in the system model. The unknown inputs and the noises are not in the same form. Multiple integrations of both the observer error signal and the measurement output are used for the observer design. The existence condition of the proposed observer is shown to be the same as that of the proportional-integral (PI) observer. Computer simulations show the effectiveness of the proposed observer.

    This paper presents an IP performance management system having the triple frameworks of performance measurement, topology monitoring and data analysis. The system infers the causal location of the performance degradation with a network tomographic approach. Since the Internet is still highly prone to performance deterioration due to congestion, router failure, and so forth, not only detecting performance deterioration, but also monitoring topology and locating the performance-degraded segments in real-time is vital to ensure that Internet Service Providers can mitigate or prevent such performance deterioration. The system is implemented and evaluated through a real-world experiment and its considerable potential for practical network operations is demonstrated.
