    This paper describes 40-Gbit/s operation of 1.55-µm electro-absorption (EA) modulators applicable to compact and low-cost transmitters for very-short-reach (VSR) applications. We start by identifying factors that make a multi-quantum-well (MQW) design suitable for high levels of output power and for uncooled operation. From the basic experimental results, we determine that a valence-band discontinuity ΔEv at around 80 meV is optimal in terms of combining high-output-power operation and a good extinction ratio. We then apply the above findings in an InGaAsP-MQW EA modulator that is monolithically integrated with a distributed feedback (DFB) laser, and thus obtain operation with high output power (+1.2 dBm), a high ER (10.5 dB), and a low power penalty (0.4 dB after transmission over 2.6 km of single-mode-fiber). These results confirm the applicability of our EA modulator/DFB laser to VSR applications. After that, we theoretically demonstrate the superiority in terms of ER characteristics of the InGaAlAs-MQW over the conventional InGaAsP-MQW. InGaAlAs-MQW EA modulators are fabricated and demonstrate, for the first time, 40-Gbit/s operation over a wide temperature range (0 to 85).

  • Pixel-Parallel Image-Matching Circuit Schemes for a Single-Chip Fingerprint Sensor and Identifier

    This paper describes pixel-parallel image-matching circuit schemes that provide the optimal binarization, the high-speed low-power comparison, and the accurate matching of fingerprint images needed for fingerprint verification. Image binarizing is adjusted adaptively during the fingerprint sensing operation. The obtained image is compared with the template in the pixel array, and the results from all of the pixels are totaled by a variable-delay circuit at high speed and low power. For accurate matching, the image is scanned by shifting it in the pixel array while maintaining whole image. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed schemes provide optimal binary images of most fingers under any condition and environment, 11-µs 147-µW totaling of results from 20,584 pixels, and wide-range image scanning and accurate matching for fingerprint images. These schemes are effective for fast and low-power fingerprint verification for a single-chip fingerprint sensor and identifier.

    We have developed an experimental approach that allows us to estimate the performance of a large-scale enterprise network to update routing information. This approach was applied to the integration of the UFJ Bank network system on January 15, 2002. The main characteristic of this approach is the application of a formula that represents the delays in updating routing information that accompany reductions in CPU resources. This procedure consists of two steps: one is to estimate the reduction in the availability of CPU resources caused by forwarding of data packets at a router, and the other is to estimate the levels of CPU resources required for replying to a query about a new route and subsequently updating the routing information. These steps were applied to estimate the performance of the network in terms of routing information convergence. The results of our experiments on the network showed that updating the routing information was possible as long as the average level of CPU utilization during any five-minute period at the routers was less than 40%. We were able to apply this guideline and thus confirm the stability of the UFJ Bank network.

    We formally define the mobile agent allocation problem from a system-wide viewpoint and then prove that it is strongly NP-complete even if each agent communicates only with two agents. This is the first formal definition for scheduling mobile agents from the viewpoint of load balancing, which enables us to discuss its properties on a rigorous basis. The problem is recognized as preemptive scheduling with independent tasks that require mutual communication. The result implies that almost all subproblems of mobile agent allocation, which require mutual communication of agents, are strongly NP-complete.

    We proposed a novel structure that improved the linear characteristics of electroabsorption modulator (EAM) with composite quantum-wells as an absorption core layer. We fabricated three types of EAM's whose active cores were 8 nm thick, 12 nm thick and a composite core with 8 nm thick and 12 nm thick quantum-well (QW), respectively. The transfer functions of EAM's were investigated and their third-order inter-modulation distortion (IMD3) was obtained by calculation. The spurious free dynamic range (SFDR) was measured and compared with three types of QW. The linearity of the device with composite quantum-well showed a large enhancement in SFDR by 9.3 dBHz2/3 in TE mode and 7.0 dBHz2/3 in TM mode compared with the conventional EAM.

    We demonstrated the transmission over 80 km at 10 Gb/s by using the amplifier and electroabsorption-modulator integrated laser diode. Tilt-facet antireflection window is implemented, inside of which a monitor photodiode is monolithically integrated for accurate power regulation. To better control the amplifier-input power and to reduce the feedback of the amplified spontaneous emission, an attenuator is incorporated by means of the inner-window. By amplifying the modulated signal and compensating modulator-chirp by gain-saturation in the amplifier, high power optical transmission is achieved from a device with -10 dB attenuation at total laser and amplifier currents of 200 mA.

    Optical signal processing is one of essential technologies for improving the flexibility of all-optical network. Above all, recently there have been a lot of studies regarding all-optical 2R/3R regeneration technology. However, there are few studies about all-optical 2R/3R technologies that are carried out in field environment. In this paper, we report the successful results of field trials of an all-optical 2R regeneration system based on an electro-absorption modulator for 40-Gbit/s WDM transmission systems with optical add/drop multiplexing. It was made sure that by applying the all-optical 2R regeneration system to the optical add/drop multiplexer in the 320-km-long transmission systems the transmission characteristics of the express signal after 320-km transmission and those of the dropped signal at 160-km can be made nearly the same. It is quite important that the transmission characteristics are equal for both the dropped and express channel from a point of view of the system design, and the results in this paper suggests one possible solution for this matter.

    We implemented all-fiber delay line using linearly chirped fiber Bragg gratings (CFBG), which can be applicable for reflectometry or optical coherence tomography (OCT). Compared with the previously reported delay lines, the proposed fiber-based optical delay line has in principle novel advantages such as automatic dispersion cancellations without additional treatment and a gain in optical delay that is dependent on parameters of used CFBGs. Dispersion compensation in optical delay line (ODL), which is the indispensable problem in bulk optics based ODL, is demonstrated in fiber by using two identical but reversely ordered CFBGs. Amplified variable optical delay of around 2.5 mm can be obtained by applying small physical stretching of one of CFBGs in the proposed scheme. The operational principles of the all-fiber variable optical delay line, which are based on the distributed reflection characteristic of a CFBG employed, are described. Especially properties such as in-line automatic dispersion cancellation and amplified optical delay under strain are dealt. To demonstrate the properties of the proposed scheme, which is theoretical consequences under assumptions, an all-fiber optical delay line have been implemented using fiber optic components such as fiber couplers and fiber circulators. With the implanted ODL, the group delay and amplified optical delay length was measured with/without strain. The wavelength independent group delay measured within reflection bandwidth of the CFBG has proved the property of automatic dispersion cancellations in the proposed fiber delay line. Optical delay length of 2.5 mm was obtained when we apply small physical stretching to the CFBG by 100 µm and this is expressed by the amplification factor of 25. Amplification factor 25, which is less than theoretical value of 34 due to slipping of fiber in the fiber holder, shows that the proposed scheme can provide large optical delay with applying small physical stretching to the CFBG. We measure slide glass thickness to check the performance of the fiber delay line and the good agreement in measured and physical thickness of slide glass (1 mm thick) validates the potential of proposed delay line in the applications of optical reflectometry and OCT. We also discuss the problem and the solution to improve the performance.

    The fairness algorithm of the Resilient Packet Ring IEEE 802.17 standard suffers from throughput degradation under an unbalanced overload. This letter proposes an enhanced fairness algorithm using a valuable piece of information, represented by the transit buffer length, about congestion alleviation on a congested node, under which the throughput degradation can be completely improved.

    In recent years, there is an increasing trend of using biometric identifiers for personal authentication. Encouraged by advances in smart card technologies, the fingerprint matching gets increasingly embedded into smart cards for an effective personal authentication method. However, current generation of low cost smart cards are usually equipped with limited hardware resources such as an 8-bit or 16-bit microcontroller. The fingerprint matching typically is a time consuming, computationally intensive and costly process. Therefore, it is still a challenge to integrate the fingerprint matching into a smart card. In this paper, we present a fast memory-efficient fingerprint matching using minutia ridge shape feature. This feature offers advantages of smaller template size, smaller memory requirement, faster matching time and robust matching against image distortion over conventional minutiae-based feature. The implementation result shows that the proposed method can be embedded in smart cards for a real-time Match-on-Card system.

    This paper analytically formulates both the optimal quantization noise allocation ratio and the coding gain of the two-dimensional morphological Haar wavelet transform. The two-dimensional morphological Haar wavelet transform has been proposed as a nonlinear wavelet transform. It has been anticipated for application to nonlinear transform coding. To utilize a transformation to transform coding, both the optimal quantization noise allocation ratio and the coding gain of the transformation should be derived beforehand regardless of whether the transformation is linear or nonlinear. The derivation is crucial for progress of nonlinear transform image coding with nonlinear wavelet because the two-dimensional morphological Haar wavelet is the most basic nonlinear wavelet. We derive both the optimal quantization noise allocation ratio and the coding gain of the two-dimensional morphological Haar wavelet transform by introducing appropriate approximations to handle the cumbersome nonlinear operator included in the transformation. Numerical experiments confirmed the validity of formulations.

  • Developments in Corpus-Based Speech Synthesis: Approaching Natural Conversational Speech

    This paper describes the special demands of conversational speech in the context of corpus-based speech synthesis. The author proposed the CHATR system of prosody-based unit-selection for concatenative waveform synthesis seven years ago, and now extends this work to incorporate the results of an analysis of five-years of recordings of spontaneous conversational speeech in a wide range of actual daily-life situations. The paper proposes that the expresion of affect (often translated as 'kansei' in Japanese) is the main factor differentiating laboratory speech from real-world conversational speech, and presents a framework for the specification of affect through differences in speaking style and voice quality. Having an enormous corpus of speech samples available for concatenation allows the selection of complete phrase-sized utterance segments, and changes the focus of unit selection from segmental or phonetic continuity to one of prosodic and discoursal appropriateness instead.     This paper presents a new framework for effectively creating VoiceFonts for speech synthesis. A VoiceFont in this paper represents a voice inventory aimed at generating personalized voices. Creating well-formed voice inventories is a time-consuming and laborious task. This has become a critical issue for speech synthesis systems that make an attempt to synthesize many high quality voice personalities. The framework we propose here aims to drastically reduce the burden with a twofold approach. First, in order to substantially enhance the accuracy and robustness of automatic speech segmentation, we introduce a multi-layered speech segmentation algorithm with a new measure of segmental reliability. Secondly, to minimize the amount of human intervention in the process of VoiceFont creation, we provide easy-to-use functions in a data viewer and compiler to facilitate checking and validation of the automatically extracted data. We conducted experiments to investigate the accuracy of the automatic speech segmentation, and its robustness to speaker and style variations. The results of the experiments on six speech corpora with a fairly large variation of speaking styles show that the speech segmentation algorithm is quite accurate and robust in extracting segments of both phonemes and accentual phrases. In addition, to subjectively evaluate VoiceFonts created by using the framework, we conducted a listening test for speaker recognizability. The results show that the voice personalities of synthesized speech generated by the VoiceFont-based speech synthesizer are fairly close to those of the donor speakers.

    CIAIR, Nagoya University, has been compiling an in-car speech database since 1999. This paper discusses the basic information contained in this database and an analysis on the effects of driving status based on the database. We have developed a system called the Data Collection Vehicle (DCV), which supports synchronous recording of multi-channel audio data from 12 microphones which can be placed throughout the vehicle, multi-channel video recording from three cameras, and the collection of vehicle-related data. In the compilation process, each subject had conversations with three types of dialog system: a human, a "Wizard of Oz" system, and a spoken dialog system. Vehicle information such as speed, engine RPM, accelerator/brake-pedal pressure, and steering-wheel motion were also recorded.   • Dynamic and Adaptive Morphing of Three-Dimensional Mesh Using Control Maps

    This paper describes a dynamic and adaptive scheme for three-dimensional mesh morphing. Using several control maps, the connectivity of intermediate meshes is dynamically changing and the mesh vertices are adaptively modified. The 2D control maps in parametric space that include curvature map, area deformation map and distance map, are used to schedule the inserting and deleting vertices in each frame. Then, the positions of vertices are adaptively moved to better positions using weighted centroidal voronoi diagram (WCVD) and a Delaunay triangulation is finally used to determine the connectivity of mesh. In contrast to most previous work, the intermediate mesh connectivity gradually changes and is much less complicated. We demonstrate several examples of aesthetically pleasing morphs created by the proposed method.

    In this paper, we discuss the construction of a large in-car spoken dialogue corpus and the result of its analysis. We have developed a system specially built into a Data Collection Vehicle (DCV) which supports the synchronous recording of multichannel audio data from 16 microphones that can be placed in flexible positions, multichannel video data from 3 cameras, and vehicle related data. Multimedia data has been collected for three sessions of spoken dialogue with different modes of navigation, during approximately a 60 minute drive by each of 800 subjects. We have characterized the collected dialogues across the three sessions. Some characteristics such as sentence complexity and SNR are found to differ significantly among the sessions. Linear regression analysis results also clarify the relative importance of various corpus characteristics.

    In Japanese, there is frequent alternation between CV morae and moraic geminate consonants. In this study, we analyzed the phonemic environments of consonant gemination (CG) using the "Corpus of Spontaneous Japanese (CSJ)." The results revealed that the environment in which gemination occurs is, to some extent, parallel to that of vowel devoicing. However, there are two crucial differences. One difference is that the CG tends to occur in a /kVk/ environment, whereas such is not the case for vowel devoicing. The second difference is that when the preceding consonant is /r/, gemination occurs, but not vowel devoicing. These observations suggest that the mechanism leading to CG differs from that which leads to vowel devoicing.

    This paper overviews recent progress in the development of corpus-based spontaneous speech recognition technology. Although speech is in almost any situation spontaneous, recognition of spontaneous speech is an area which has only recently emerged in the field of automatic speech recognition. Broadening the application of speech recognition depends crucially on raising recognition performance for spontaneous speech. For this purpose, it is necessary to build large spontaneous speech corpora for constructing acoustic and language models. This paper focuses on various achievements of a Japanese 5-year national project "Spontaneous Speech: Corpus and Processing Technology" that has recently been completed. Because of various spontaneous-speech specific phenomena, such as filled pauses, repairs, hesitations, repetitions and disfluencies, recognition of spontaneous speech requires various new techniques. These new techniques include flexible acoustic modeling, sentence boundary detection, pronunciation modeling, acoustic as well as language model adaptation, and automatic summarization. Particularly automatic summarization including indexing, a process which extracts important and reliable parts of the automatic transcription, is expected to play an important role in building various speech archives, speech-based information retrieval systems, and human-computer dialogue systems.

    Optical regeneration technique using an electro-absorption modulator (EAM) is reviewed. Simple 3R optical regeneration using an EAM was proposed and verified at 20 Gbit/s. The optical nonlinearities including cross-absorption modulation (XAM) and cross-phase modulation (XPM) induced in an EAM were quantitatively characterized by experiment. High bit-rate 2R type all-optical regeneration (wavelength conversion) at 100 Gbit/s was demonstrated by an EAM in conjunction with a delayed interferometer (DI) with required optical pulse energy of 1.5 pJ. It was verified that the operable bandwidth of the EAM-DI wavelength converter at 40 Gbit/s covered almost full range of C-band without tuning operation conditions.

    Spontaneously spoken Japanese includes a lot of grammatically ill-formed linguistic phenomena such as fillers, hesitations, inversions, and so on, which do not appear in written language. This paper proposes a novel method of robust dependency parsing using a large-scale spoken language corpus, and evaluates the availability and robustness of the method using spontaneously spoken dialogue sentences. By utilizing stochastic information about the appearance of ill-formed phenomena, the method can robustly parse spoken Japanese including fillers, inversions, or dependencies over utterance units. Experimental results reveal that the parsing accuracy reached 87.0%, and we confirmed that it is effective to utilize the location information of a bunsetsu, and the distance information between bunsetsus as stochastic information.
