Based on the mutuality between arrival moments of uplink and downlink messages, this paper proposes a scheme that assigns different time-out thresholds for mobile terminal sleep mode operation according to the direction of the message just processed. Simulation results prove that, this approach can increase the power saving factor of a mobile terminal without degrading QoS.

Near-field imaging has been intensively investigated to observe the shape and the physical properties of objects, aiming at wide applications in the areas of science and engineering. In this research, by using 60 GHz band waveguide-type microscopic aperture probe, the characteristics of the near-field imaging in transmission mode have been studied by simulation and experiment. The probe is made of a WR-15 rectangular waveguide with end-shielded metal plate and a 0.5 mm-diameter aperture. In the simulation, at first, the electric field distribution at the aperture, at the rear (waveguide) and the front positions (free space) are presented. Second, the transmitted electric fields are presented for three cases: (a) scanning of a dielectric slit, (b) by varying the distance between the aperture and a dielectric sample, and (c) scanning of a dielectric groove. In the experiment, the lateral resolution with a two-slit and the depth resolution with grooves having various depths in rectangular format are described and the results show both resolutions to be much shorter than the wavelength. Finally, the scanned images of the letter N punched through a dielectric material and a leaf are demonstrated.

Existing methods for inverse motion compensation (IMC) in the DCT domain have not considered the unrestricted motion vector (UMV). In the existing methods, IMC is performed to deal with the UMV in the spatial domain after the inverse DCT (IDCT). We propose an IMC method which can deal with the UMV directly in the DCT domain without the use of the IDCT/DCT required by the existing methods. The computational complexity of the proposed method can be reduced by about half of that of the brute-force method operating in the spatial domain. Experimental results show that the proposed method can efficiently reduce the processing time with similar visual quality.

When the bit rate of a compressed video sequence is reduced by a frequency domain transcoder system, the rate control scheme plays a very important role in maintaining consistent video quality. In this paper, we propose an efficient rate control scheme based on the complexity of MB (Macro Block) while conventional transcoding schemes use that of a picture. Since the frequency domain transcoder has to calculate the spatial activity of MB to adjust the quantization step, a process of converting the DCT (Discrete Cosine Transform) data into spatial one is required. The proposed scheme calculates the spatial activity from DCT data without converting them to pixel domain.

An age-group classification method based on a fusion of different classifiers with different two-dimensional feature extraction algorithms is proposed. Theoretically, an integration of multiple classifiers can provide better performance compared to a single classifier. In this paper, we extract effective features from one sample image using different dimensional reduction methods, construct multiple classifiers in each subspace, and combine them to reduce age-group classification errors. As for the dimensional reduction methods, two-dimensional PCA (2DPCA) and two-dimensional LDA (2DLDA) are used. These algorithms are antisymmetric in the treatment of the rows and the columns of the images. We prepared the row-based and column-based algorithms to make two different classifiers with different error tendencies. By combining these classifiers with different errors, the performance can be improved. Experimental results show that our fusion-based age-group classification method achieves better performance than existing two-dimensional algorithms alone.

In this letter, we first analyze the delay of the WLAN discovery scheme specified for 3GPP and WLAN interworking networks. Theoretical analysis indicates that the delay of the discovery scheme given by 3GPP increases linearly with the number of WLAN channels needed to be scanned. To reduce the discovery delay, we then propose an effective WLAN discovery scheme utilizing the cellular network to aid in the broadcasting the information of WLANs. Thus the number of WLAN channels required to be scanned for users is greatly reduced. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is demonstrated by analysis and simulation.

This paper describes a broadband active terminal circuit and its application to a distributed amplifier. In this study, we first analyzed and compared three types of active terminal circuits using representative circuit configurations, namely, an active terminal circuit with a common-emitter BJT, an active terminal circuit with a Darlington BJT pair, and an active terminal circuit with cascode-connected BJTs. The simulation results showed that the active terminal circuit with cascode-connected BJTs kept the matching condition up to high frequency. After the simulation, we fabricated a distributed amplifier that used an active terminal circuit with cascode-connected BJTs. The RF amplifier achieved a flat gain of 9.7 1.0 dB over a range of 3-15 GHz.

In this paper, we propose an efficient resource discovery scheme for large-scale ubiquitous computing environments, which supports scalable semantic searches and load balancing among resource discovery resolvers. Here, the resources are described based on the concepts defined in the ontological hierarchy. To semantically search the resources in a scalable manner, we propose a semantic vector space and semantic resource discovery network in which the resources are organized based on their respective semantic distances. Most importantly, landmarks are introduced for the first time to reduce the dimensionality of the vector space. Computer simulation with CAN verifies the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

This paper describes a new criterion for speech recognition using an integrated confidence measure to minimize the word error rate (WER). The conventional criteria for WER minimization obtain the expected WER of a sentence hypothesis merely by comparing it with other hypotheses in an n-best list. The proposed criterion estimates the expected WER by using an integrated confidence measure with word posterior probabilities for a given acoustic input. The integrated confidence measure, which is implemented as a classifier based on maximum entropy (ME) modeling or support vector machines (SVMs), is used to acquire probabilities reflecting whether the word hypotheses are correct. The classifier is comprised of a variety of confidence measures and can deal with a temporal sequence of them to attain a more reliable confidence. Our proposed criterion for minimizing WER achieved a WER of 9.8% and a 3.9% reduction, relative to conventional n-best rescoring methods in transcribing Japanese broadcast news in various environments such as under noisy field and spontaneous speech conditions.

The utilization of a high-Tc superconductor for implementing a superconducting qubit is to be expected. Recent researches on the quantum property of Josephson junctions in high-Tc superconductors indicate that the low energy quasiparticle excitation is weak enough to observe the macroscopic quantum tunneling. Therefore, a detailed study on the quantum property of high-Tc Josephson junctions becomes more important for applications. We show our experimental results of the macroscopic tunneling of current biased intrinsic Josephson junctions in Bi-2212 and its resonant activation in the presence of microwave radiation.
Time-of-Flight Mass Spectroscopy (TOF-MS) with superconducting detectors has two advantages over MS with conventional ion detectors. First, it is coverage for a very wide range of molecule weight over 1,000,000. Secondly, kinetic energies of accelerated molecules can be measured at impact events one by one. These unique features enable an ultimate detection efficiency of 100% for intact ions and a fragmentation analysis that is critical for top-down proteomics. Superconducting MS is expected to play a role in, for example, the detection of antigen-antibody complexes, which are important for medical diagnosis. In this paper, how superconductivity contributes to MS is described.

In the case of miniaturized telemetry capsules, such as a capsule endoscope that can acquire and transmit images from the intestines, the size and the power consumption of the module are restricted. In the capsule endoscopes, it is desirable that the control function can capacitate the sampling of digestive fluid and tissue, drug delivery, and locomotion. In this paper, the control function was embodied by bi-directional communication. A CPLD (complex programmable logic device) controller was designed and implemented for the bi-directional communication in capsule endoscope. The diameter of capsule was 12 mm and the length was 30 mm. The performance of implemented capsule was verified by in-vivo animal experiments.

Let G be any graph with property P (for example, general graph, directed graph, etc.) and S be nonnegative and non-decreasing integer sequence(s). The prescribed degree sequence problem is a problem to determine whether there is a graph G having S as the prescribed sequence(s) of degrees or outdegrees of the vertices. From 1950's, P has attracted wide attentions, and its many extensions have been considered. Let P be the property satisfying the following (1) and (2):(1) G is a directed graph with two disjoint vertex sets A and B. (2) There are r11 (r22, respectively) directed edges between every pair of vertices in A(B), and r12 directed edges between every pair of vertex in A and vertex in B. Then G is called an (r11, r12, r22)-tournament ("tournament", for short). The problem is called the score sequence pair problem of a "tournament" (realizable, for short). S is called a score sequence pair of a "tournament" if the answer of the problem is "yes." In this paper, we propose the characterizations of a score sequence pair of a "tournament" and an algorithm for determining in linear time whether a pair of two integer sequences is realizable or not.
This paper examines a system which is inspected at equally spaced points in time. We express the observed states of the system as a discrete time Markov chain with an absorbing state. It is assumed that the true state is certainly identified through inspection. After each inspection, one of three actions can be taken: Operation, repair, or replacement. We assume that the result of repair is uncertain. If repair is taken, we decide whether to inspect the system or not. When inspection is performed after completion of repair, we select an optimal action. After replacement, the system becomes new. We study the optimal maintenance policy which minimizes the expected total discounted cost for unbounded horizon. It is shown that, under reasonable conditions on the system's deterioration and repair laws and the cost structures, a control limit policy is optimal. We derive several valid properties for finding the optimal maintenance policy numerically. Furthermore, numerical analysis is conducted to show our theoretical results could hold under weaker conditions.

Diseases of the gastro-intestinal tract are becoming more prevalent. New techniques and devices, such as the wireless capsule endoscope and the telemetry capsule, that are able to measure the various signals of the digestive organs (temperature, pH, and pressure), have been developed for the observation of the digestive organs. In these capsule devices, there are no methods of moving and grasping them. In order to make a swift diagnosis and to give proper medication, it is necessary to control the moving speed of the capsule. This paper presents a wireless system for the control of movements of an electrical stimulus capsule. This includes an electrical stimulus capsule which can be swallowed and an external transmitting control system. A receiver, a receiving antenna (small multi-loop), a transmitter, and a transmitting antenna (monopole) were designed and fabricated taking into consideration the MPE, power consumption, system size, signal-to-noise ratio and the modulation method. The wireless system, which was designed and implemented for the control of movements of the electrical stimulus capsule, was verified by in-vitro experiments which were performed on the small intestines of a pig. As a result, we found that when the small intestines are contracted by electrical stimuli, the capsule can move to the opposite direction, which means that the capsule can go up or down in the small intestines.

The extended version of spectral domain approach (ESDA) is applied to evaluate the scattering characteristics of discontinuities in coaxial line. Discontinuities may be in inner and/or outer conductor of coaxial line. This method secures the high accuracy by considering the singularities of fields near the conductor edge properly. The computational labor of the new method is far lighter than that of FEM, so that novel method is suitable for the time consuming iterative computation such as fitting procedure in material evaluation or optimization of antenna design.

A compact OTA suitable for low-voltage active-RC and MOSFET-C filters is presented. The input stage of the OTA utilises the resistive tail-biased differential amplifier and the output stage relies upon the feed-forward class AB technique with common-mode rejection capability that incurs no penalty on transconductance/bias-current efficiency. Analysis on the achievable peak voltage swing of the OTA when employed in filters is given. Simulation results of a 0.5-V 100-kHz elliptic 5th-order filter based on the OTA's in a 2-V 0.18 µm CMOS process indicate the differential peak voltage as large as 0.42 Vp (84% of the supply voltage) at 1% THD with the SFDR of 60 dB and the total power consumption of 50 µW.
In CDMA cellular systems, the frequency reuse factor equals one. Therefore, the soft-handoff technology with combining macroscopic diversity was introduced to enhance the link performance. In this work, a novel macroscopic diversity combining scheme is proposed to enhance the link performance of the forward-link. The basic concept of this scheme is to integrate error correction coding into the soft-handoff technology. According to the number of soft-handoff channels, the source information is encoded by a convolutional code with a lower code rate. The coded symbols are then equally distributed to all channels from different BSs to the MS, and each channel carries a disjointed set of coded symbols. For this proposed scheme, no extra transmission power or bandwidth is required. The only cost is a slight increase of the encoding and decoding complexity of the convolutional codes. Numerical and simulation results show that a performance gain of 1 dB in bit energy-to-total noise power density ratio can be obtained as compared with the conventional scheme in the same conditions.
