A scalable multicast session announcement system is a key component of a group communication framework over the Internet. It enables the announcement of session parameters (like the {source address; group address} pair) to a potentially large number of users, according to each site administrator's policy. This system should accommodate any flavor of group communication system, like the Any-Source Multicast (ASM) and Source-Specific Multicast (SSM) schemes. In this paper we first highlight the limitations of the current Session Announcement Protocol (SAP) and study several other information distribution protocols. This critical analysis leads us to formulate the requirements of an ideal multicast session announcement system. We then introduce a new session announcement system called "Channel Reflector". It appears as a hierarchical directory system and offers an effective policy and scope control technique. We finally mention some design aspects, like the protocol messages and configuration structures the Channel Reflector uses.

In a direct conversion receiver for mobile communication, it is important to reduce power dissipation. Because a low pass filter in a direct conversion receiver must suppress adjacent channel signals, a high order and high power dissipation is often required in the low pass filter. We propose a new phase compensation technique suitable for a low power transconductor used in a GmC filter as a low pass filter. The new phase compensation technique reduces 10% of power dissipation.

This paper presents the analysis of hybrid cascode compensation scheme, merged Ahuja and improved Ahuja style compensation methods, which is used in two-stage CMOS operational transconductance amplifiers (OTAs). The open loop signal transfer function is derived to allow the accurate estimation of the poles and zeros. This analytical approach shows that the non-dominant poles and zeros of the hybrid cascode compensation are about 40 percent greater than those of the conventional cascode compensation. Circuit level simulation results are provided to show the accuracy of the calculated expressions and also the usefulness of the proposed cascode compensation technique.

In order to control the moving speed of an endoscopic capsule in the human intestine, electrical stimulation method is proposed in this paper. The miniaturized endoscopic capsule with the function of various electrical stimulations has been designed and implemented. An in-vivo animal experiment has been performed to show the ability of controlling the movement speed of the endoscopic capsule according to the level of electrical stimulation. In-vivo experiments were performed by inserting the implemented capsule into a pig's intestinal tract. From the experimental results, the activation of peristaltic movement and the relationship between the moving speed of capsule and the stimulation amplitude could be found. It is shown that the moving speed of capsule in the intestine can be controlled by adjustment of the stimulation level applied in the capsule electrodes. The results of the in-vivo experiment verify that the degree of contraction in the intestinal tract is closely related with the level of stimulating electrical voltage, suggesting that the moving speed of capsule in the human gastrointestinal tract can be controlled by externally adjusting the amplitude of stimulating pulse signal.

In this letter, two kinds of MOS operational transconductance amplifiers (OTAs) based on combiners are presented. Each OTA has the following advantages; one of the proposed OTAs (OTA-1) can be operated at low supply voltage and the other OTA (OTA-2) has wide bandwidth. Through HSPICE simulations with a standard 0.35 µm CMOS device parameters, the operation under the supply voltage of 1.5 V for OTA-1 and the -3 dB bandwidth of several gigahertz for OTA-2 are confirmed.

A high-speed transconductance-C-opamp integrator using a current-feedback amplifier is proposed. The integrator has good frequency response compared with a conventional transconductance-C-opamp integrator using a voltage-feedback amplifier. The current-feedback amplifier shifts the second pole of the proposed integrator to the upper frequency. The frequency is proportional to the current gain of the current-feedback amplifier. The proposed integrator can eliminate effects of the parasitics at the output node of the transconductance since the voltage at the node is fixed. One of the circuit examples of the proposed integrator is shown. Its validity is confirmed through HSPICE simulations. The proposed integrator works as predicted up to 260 MHz.

The Internet has become an important medium for effective marketing and efficient operations for many institutions. Visitors of a particular web site leave behind valuable information on their preferences, requirements, and demands regarding the offered products and/or services. Understanding these requirements online, i.e., during a particular visit, is both a difficult technical challenge and a tremendous business opportunity. Web sites that can provide effective online navigation suggestions to their visitors can exploit the potential inherent in the data such visits generate every day. However, identifying, collecting, and maintaining the necessary knowledge that navigation suggestions are based on is far from trivial. We propose a methodology for acquiring and maintaining this knowledge efficiently using data mart and web mining technology. Its effectiveness has been shown in an application for a bank's web site.

In the design of cascode CMOS low-noise amplifiers, the gate-drain capacitance is generally neglected because it is thought to be small enough compared to gate-source capacitance. However, a careful examination will reveal the fact that the drain impedance of the input transistor significantly affects the input impedance through the gate-drain capacitance, especially as the CMOS technology getting more and more advanced. Moreover, the substrate coupling network of the input transistor also comes into play when the drain impedance of the input transistor is high enough compared to the substrate coupling network. In order to make input matching easier, it is desirable to know the details of the substrate coupling network. Unfortunately, designers generally do not have enough information about the technology they have used, not to mention knowing the details concerning the substrate coupling network. As a matter of fact, designers generally do have foundry provided component models that contain information about the substrate coupling network. This gives us the chance to minimize its effect and predict the input impedance of a low noise amplifier more accurately. In this paper, we show that the effect of the substrate coupling network can be ignored by keeping the drain impedance of the input transistor low enough and a proper drain impedance can then be chosen to achieve input matching without the need of iteration steps. Simulation results of a 2.4 GHz CMOS low noise amplifier using foundry provided component models are also presented to demonstrate the validation of the proposed input matching method.

This paper presents the analysis of the stopping maneuver of the human driver by using a new three-dimensional driving simulator that uses CAVE, which provides stereoscopic immersive vision. First of all, the difference in the driving behavior between 3D and 2D virtual environments is investigated. Secondly, a GMDH is applied to the measured data in order to build a mathematical model of driving behavior. From the obtained model, it is found that the acceleration information has less importance in stopping maneuver under the 2D and 3D environments.

An intermediate frequency (IF) variable gain amplifier (VGA) with exponential gain control for a radio receiver is fabricated in 0.25-µm CMOS technology. The techniques to improve the bandwidth and to reduce temperature dependence of gain are described. The complete VGA is composed of two stages of linearized transconductance VGA and three stages of fixed gain amplifier (FGA). The complete VGA provides a continuous 10 dB to 76.5 dB gain control range, an IIP3 of -11.5 dBm and an NF of 15 dB at 40 MHz.

This article describes a large bandwidth and low distortion line driver in a 0.35-µm CMOS process. The line driver drives a 75 Ω resistive load. Its power consumption is 140 mW from a 3.3 V supply. It has a relatively high -3 dB bandwidth (260 MHz) with good phase margin of about 70 degrees. It shows very low THD (-74.5 dB) when drives the load with a 3.3 V peak to peak sine wave at 10 MHz. This architecture reduces the distortion by locating the input differential pair inside the feedback loop and eliminating the distortion of the feedback transistors, which is dominant source of distortion at high frequencies. Thus, it improves the linearity of the output voltage in comparison with previous designs.

The purpose of this paper is to present the novel technique to solve the recognition errors in invariant range image multi-pose face recognition. The scale, center and pose error problems were solved by using the geometric transform. Range image face data (RIFD) was obtained from a laser range finder and was used in the model to generate multi-poses. Each pose data size was reduced by linear reduction. The reduced RIFD was transformed to the gradient face model for facial feature image extraction and also for matching using the Membership Matching Score model. Using this method, the results from the experiment are acceptable although the size of gradient face image data is quite small (659 elements). Three-Layer Matching Search was the algorithm designed to reduce the access timing to the most accurate and similar pose position. The proposed algorithm was tested using facial range images from 130 people with normal facial expressions and without eyeglasses. The results achieved the mean success rate of 95.67 percent of 12 degrees up/down and left/right (UDLR) and 88.35 percent of 24 degrees UDLR.

Analysis of speech acts and discourse structures is essential to a dialogue understanding system because speech acts and discourse structures are closely tied with the speaker's intention. However, it has been difficult to infer a speech act and a discourse structure from a surface utterance because they highly depend on the context of the utterance. We propose a statistical dialogue analysis model to determine discourse structures as well as speech acts using a maximum entropy model. The model can automatically acquire probabilistic discourse knowledge from an annotated dialogue corpus. Moreover, the model can analyze speech acts and discourse structures in one framework. In the experiment, the model showed better performance than other previous works.

A new bipolar linear transconductor for low-voltage low-power signal processing is proposed. The proposed circuit has larger input linear range and smaller power dissipation when compared with the conventional bipolar linear transconductor. The experimental results show that the transconductor with a transconductance of 50 µS has a linearity error of less than 0.02% over an input voltage range of 2.1 V at supply voltages of 3 V. The power dissipation of the transconductor is 3.15 mW.

We have determined the thickness and optical constants (refractive index and extinction coefficient) of each layer in the multi-layer organic light emitting diode (OLED) devices based on phosphorescent platinum octaethyl porphine (PtOEP) using a phase modulated spectroscopic ellipsometer. The thickness of each layer estimated from the ellipsometric measurement is different from the thickness measured with quartz oscillator during the evaporation of organic materials. The deviation of total multi-layer thickness is about 5%, while the deviation in each of N, N'-bis(1-naphtyl)-N, N'-diphenyl-1,1'-biphenyl-4,4'-diamine (α-NPD) and aluminum tris 8-hydroxyquinoline (Alq3) layers is about 20-25%. Additionally the spectra of refractive index and extinction coefficient of Alq3 and α-NPD layers are different from those that are measured using the single layer films. These results are understood by penetration of organic material from the neighboring layers in the multi-layer structure devices.

To implement a fast and reliable question-answering system in Korean, we propose a two-pass answer indexer using co-occurrence information between answer candidates and adjacent content words. The two-pass indexer scans documents twice for obtaining local scores and global scores. Then, the two-pass indexer calculates the degrees of association between answer candidates and co-occurring content words. Using this technique, the proposed QA system shortens the response time and enhances the precision.

A resonant slit-type probe is proposed in this paper that can improve measurement sensitivity in millimeter-wave scanning near-field microscopy. The probe consists of a rectangular metal waveguide incorporating the following three sections; a straight section at the tip of the probe whose height is much smaller than the operating wavelength; a standard-height waveguide section; a quarter-wave transformer section to achieve impedance-matching between the other sections. The design procedure used for the probe is presented in detail and the performance of the fabricated resonant probe is evaluated experimentally. Experiments performed at U-band frequencies in which we reconstruct 2D images show that the sensitivity of the resonant probe is improved by more than four times compared with a conventional tapered slit-type probe. Some experimental results are compared with those obtained using the finite element method (Ansoft HFSS). Good agreement is demonstrated.

As audio and video applications have proliferated on the Internet, transcoding proxy caching has been considered as an important technique for improving network performance, especially for mobile networks. Due to several new emerging factors in the transcoding proxy, existing methods for proxy placement for web caching cannot be simply applied to solve the problem of proxy placement for transcoding proxy caching. This paper addresses the problem of proxy placement for coordinated en-route transcoding proxy caching for tree networks. We propose a model for this problem by including the new emerging factors in the transcoding proxy and present optimal solutions for this problem with/without constraints on the number of transcoding proxies using dynamic programming. Finally, we implement our algorithm and evaluate our model on various performance metrics through extensive simulation experiments. The implementation results show that our model outperforms the existing model for transcoding proxy placement for linear topology, as well as the random proxy placement model. The average improvements of our model over the other models are about 7.2 percent and 21.4 percent in terms of all the performance metrics considered.

Our goal is to realize an extra-large stereoscopic display in the open air for use by the general public. We have developed a stereoscopic large display by use of a full-color LED panel. Although the developed display enables viewers to view the stereoscopic images without any special glasses, it is necessary for the viewers to move to stand within the viewing areas. Movements of the viewers are considered to depend on arrangements of viewing areas. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the movements of viewers who watch different designs of stereoscopic LED displays with a parallax barrier, including conventional designs to provide multiple perspective images and designs to eliminate pseudoscopic viewing areas, and evaluate the performance of different viewing areas based on the obtained paths of the viewers. We have developed a real-time measurement system of a viewer's position by use of a camera on the ceiling. We have recorded the viewing movements caused by the shift of viewing areas. It was found that the viewers moved to stand on orthoscopic viewing positions. The movements of viewers who move to find a viewing area have been recorded with different designs of stereoscopic LED displays that provide different viewing areas. We have calculated the lateral moving time of the viewers'movements. It is shown that the elimination of pseudoscopic viewing areas reduces the lateral moving time. Thus, the real-time measurement system of a viewer's position has been utilized for evaluation of performance of the different designs of stereoscopic LED displays.

The Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) technique is motivating the world-wide researchers to realize the next generation wireless LANs with the higher channel capacity and higher signal quality. This paper proposes and analyzes the Space Division Multiplexing Single Carrier OFDM (SDM-SCOFDM) system with adaptive modulation (AM) method over MIMO channels. The salient features of the proposed method are to enable the significant reduction of the number of required feedback adaptive modulation information (AMI) bits and the improvement of the PAPR (peak to average power ratio) performance at a cost of little degradation of channel capacity as comparing with the AM aided SDM-OFDM system. We also propose the Carrier-to-Noise Power Ratio (CNR) estimation method for SDM-SCOFDM signals over multi-path fading channels, which can be used for the assignment of the optimal modulation scheme in each transmit antenna. This paper presents the various computer simulation results to verify the proposed method under a typical wireless LAN environment.
