  • Control of Speed and Power in a Humanoid Robot Arm Using Pneumatic Actuators for Human-Robot Coexisting Environment

    A new type of humanoid robot arm which can coexist and be interactive with human beings are looked for. For the purpose of implementation of human smooth and fast movement to a pneumatic robot, the author used a humanoid robot arm with pneumatic agonist-antagonist actuators as endoskeletons which has control mechanism in the stiffness of each joint, and the controllability was experimentally discussed. Using Kitamori 's method to experimentally decide the control gains and using I-PD controller, three joints of the humanoid robot arm were experimentally controlled. The damping control algorithm was also adopted to the wrist joint, to modify the speed in accordance with the power. The results showed that the controllability to step-wise input was less than one degree in error to follow the target angles, and the time constant was less than one second. The simultaneous input of command to three joints was brought about the overshoot of about ten percent increase in error. The humanoid robot arm can generate the calligraphic motions, moving quickly at some times but slowly at other times, or particularly softly on some occasions but stiffly on other occasions at high accuracy.

  • A Study about the Relationship between Frame Quality and Single Video Quality

    Digital video encapsulates the time series of a frame (still) images, where overall video quality can be obtained by using the quality of each frame image and the temporal information between the frame image. Coding of video produces degradation of these two types of information. These degradations can be classified as spatial degradation (static degradation) of a frame images and temporal degradation between frame image (dynamic degradation). In the framework of video quality evaluation it is necessary to consider those degradations, because their contents are strongly interdependable and quantification is problematic for these degradations. Therefore, the development of an objective video quality assessment method for single video quality requires to investigate how much static degradation and dynamic degradation affect single video quality. In this research, single video quality was predicted highly accuratly by using frame quality as static degradation and frame rate information as dynamic degradation.

  • Localization Model of Synthesized Sound Image Using Precedence Effect in Sound Field Reproduction Based on Wave Field Synthesis

    Although it is very important to conduct listening tests when constructing a practical sound field reproduction system based on wave field synthesis, listening tests are very expensive. A localization model of synthesized sound images that predicts the results of listening tests is proposed. This model reduces the costs of constructing a reproduction system because it makes it possible to omit the listening tests. The proposed model uses the precedence effect and predicts the direction of synthesized sound images based on the inter-aural time difference. A comparison of the results predicted by the proposed model and the localized results of listening tests shows that the model accurately predicts the localized results.

    In virtual cellular network (VCN), proposed for high-speed mobile communications, the signal transmitted from a mobile terminal is received by some wireless ports distributed in each virtual cell and relayed to the central port that acts as a gateway to the core network. In this paper, we apply the multi-route MHMRC diversity in order to decrease the transmit power and increase the multi-hop link capacity. The transmit power, the interference power and the link capacity are evaluated for DS-CDMA multi-hop VCN by computer simulation. The multi-route MHMRC diversity can be applied to not only DS-CDMA but also other access schemes (i.e. MC-CDMA, OFDM, etc.).

    This paper proposes a new minimum BER (MBER) criterion precoding method that is robust to imperfect channel state information (CSI) for MIMO-OFDM mobile communications. The proposed MBER precoding aims to minimize BER of the maximum likelihood detection (MLD), on the condition that the transmitter can obtain only imperfect CSI owing to channel estimation and quantization errors of the feedback CSI. The proposed scheme controls its precoding parameters under a transmit power constraint by minimizing an upper bound of BER which is derived from the pairwise error probability and averaged with respect to the CSI error. In contrast with a conventional power allocation MBER precoding method that is also robust to the CSI error, the proposed scheme does not make any assumption on the precoding parameters so as to reduce complexity. Thus, it is expected to outperform the conventional scheme at the cost of higher complexity. Computer simulations demonstrate that the proposed precoding method outperforms a conventional nonrobust MBER precoder and the conventional robust power allocation MBER precoding method when the amount of the CSI error is not considerable.

    In this study, we have performed both the channel modification of the conventional MHEMT (Metamorphic High Electron Mobility Transistor) and the variation of gate recess width to improve the breakdown and RF characteristics. The modified channel consists of the InxGa1-xAs and the InP layers. Since InP has lower impact ionization coefficient than In0.53Ga0.47As, we have adopted the InP-composite channel in the modified MHEMT. Also, the gate recess width is both functions of breakdown and RF characteristic of a HEMT structure. Therefore, we have studied the breakdown and RF characteristic for various gate recess widths in MHEMT. We have compared breakdown characteristic of the InP-composite channel with that of conventional MHEMT. It is shown that on and off state breakdown voltages of the InP-composite channel MHEMT were increased by about 20 and 27%, respectively, compared with the conventional structure. Also, breakdown voltage of the InP-composite channel MHEMT was increased with increasing gate recess width. The fT was increased with decreasing the gate recess width, whereas fmax was increased with increasing the gate recess width. Also, we extracted small-signal parameters. It was shown that Gd of the InP-composite channel MHEMT is decreased about by 30% compared with the conventional MHEMT. Therefore, the suppression of the impact ionization in the InP-composite channel increases the breakdown voltage and decreases the output conductance.

    A dispersion diagram is useful in interpreting the characteristics of a periodic structure. In particular, the fast-wave region, where the wave is radiating, and the slow-wave region, where the wave is guided, can be determined from the dispersion diagram. An electronically-controlled composite right/left-handed (CRLH) transmission line (TL) was previously proposed and utilized as a leaky-wave (LW) antenna operating in the fast-wave region. However, since a guided-wave application operates in the slow-wave region, it is meaningful to study slow-wave effects of the proposed TL. In this paper, the dispersion diagram is used to investigate the slow-wave factor (SWF), which is necessary to understand the fast/slow-wave operations. Furthermore, the frequency characteristics are measured to find the cut-off frequencies in the LH and RH regions. Based on experimental results, it is observed at a fixed frequency, 2.6-GHz, that the phase of a proposed 6-cell structure can be changed by up to 280 in the LH slow-wave region.

  • A Simple Joint Estimation Method of Residual Frequency Offset and Sampling Frequency Offset for DVB Systems

    This letter presents a simple joint estimation method for residual frequency offset (RFO) and sampling frequency offset (STO) in OFDM-based digital video broadcasting (DVB) systems. The proposed method selects a continual pilot (CP) subset from an unsymmetrically and non-uniformly distributed CP set to obtain an unbiased estimator. Simulation results show that the proposed method using a properly selected CP subset is unbiased and performs robustly.

    Unforgeability of digital signatures is closely related to the security of hash functions since hashing messages, such as hash-and-sign paradigm, is necessary in order to sign (arbitrarily) long messages. Recent successful collision finding attacks against practical hash functions would indicate that constructing practical collision resistant hash functions is difficult to achieve. Thus, it is worth considering to relax the requirement of collision resistance for hash functions that is used to hash messages in signature schemes. Currently, the most efficient strongly unforgeable signature scheme in the standard model which is based on the CDH assumption (in bilinear groups) is the Boneh-Shen-Waters (BSW) signature proposed in 2006. In their scheme, however, a collision resistant hash function is necessary to prove its security. In this paper, we construct a signature scheme which has the same properties as the BSW scheme but does not rely on collision resistant hash functions. Instead, we use a target collision resistant hash function, which is a strictly weaker primitive than a collision resistant hash function. Our scheme is, in terms of the signature size and the computational cost, as efficient as the BSW scheme.

    This paper presents the selective epitaxial growth (SEG) properties of reduced pressure chemical vapor deposition (RPCVD) at low temperatures (LT) of 675-725 with high aspect ratio mask of dielectric films. The SEG process could be explained in conjunction with the loading effect, the mask pattern shape/size, and the process parameters of RPCVD. The growth rates showed a large non-uniformity up to 40% depending upon the pattern size of the dielectric mask films, but as the SEG film becomes thicker, the growth rate difference converged on 15% between the narrow 2-µm and the wide 100-µm patterns. The evolution of SEG was controlled dominantly by the surface migration control at the initial stage, and converted to the surface topology control. The design of pattern size and distribution with dummy patterns must be useful to accomplish the reliable and uniform LT-SEG.

    In this paper, characteristics of the 2-bit recessed channel memory with lifted-charge trapping nodes are investigated. The length between the charge trapping nodes through channel, which is defined as the effective memory node length (Meff), is extended by lifting up them. The dependence of VTH window and short channel effect (SCE) on the recessed depth is analyzed. Improvement of short channel effect is achieved because the recessed channel structure increases the effective channel length (Leff). Moreover, this device shows highly scalable memory characteristics without suffering from the bottom-side effect (BSE).

    In this paper, we evaluate BER (bit error rate) performance and diversity gain when employing a transmission technique utilizing LC (Linear Combination) diversity using 2 time slots with QPSK channels in 2 2 MIMO (Multiple-Input Multiple-Output) spatial multiplexing systems by comparing it with the upper and lower bound on BER. This evaluation shows that this transmission technique realizes high diversity gain and high transmission rate in LOS (line-of-sight) and NLOS (non line-of-sight) environments.

    In this letter we propose an adaptive beamforming algorithm that efficiently suppresses interferences using a structured interference covariance matrix. The proposed algorithm provides high performance by exploiting angle diversity, especially in cellular mobile environments where the angular spread of a received signal is relatively small. We verify the superiority of the proposed algorithm to the well known linearly constrained minimum variance (LCMV) and reference signal-based algorithms.

    The RSA-based Password-Authenticated Key Exchange (PAKE) protocols have been proposed to realize both mutual authentication and generation of secure session keys where a client is sharing his/her password only with a server and the latter should generate its RSA public/private key pair (e,n),(d,n) every time due to the lack of PKI (Public-Key Infrastructures). One of the ways to avoid a special kind of off-line (so called e-residue) attacks in the RSA-based PAKE protocols is to deploy a challenge/response method by which a client verifies the relative primality of e and φ(n) interactively with a server. However, this kind of RSA-based PAKE protocols did not give any proof of the underlying challenge/response method and therefore could not specify the exact complexity of their protocols since there exists another security parameter, needed in the challenge/response method. In this paper, we first present an RSA-based PAKE (RSA-PAKE) protocol that can deploy two different challenge/response methods (denoted by Challenge/Response Method1 and Challenge/Response Method2). The main contributions of this work include: (1) Based on the number theory, we prove that the Challenge/Response Method1 and the Challenge/Response Method2 are secure against e-residue attacks for any odd prime e; (2) With the security parameter for the on-line attacks, we show that the RSA-PAKE protocol is provably secure in the random oracle model where all of the off-line attacks are not more efficient than on-line dictionary attacks; and (3) By considering the Hamming weight of e and its complexity in the RSA-PAKE protocol, we search for primes to be recommended for a practical use. We also compare the RSA-PAKE protocol with the previous ones mainly in terms of computation and communication complexities.

  • Evaluation of Information Leakage via Electromagnetic Emanation and Effectiveness of Tempest

    It is well known that there is relationship between electromagnetic emanation and processing information in IT devices such as personal computers and smart cards. By analyzing such electromagnetic emanation, eavesdropper will be able to get some information, so it becomes a real threat of information security. In this paper, we show how to estimate amount of information that is leaked as electromagnetic emanation. We assume the space between the IT device and the receiver is a communication channel, and we define the amount of information leakage via electromagnetic emanations by its channel capacity. By some experimental results of Tempest, we show example estimations of amount of information leakage. Using the value of channel capacity, we can calculate the amount of information per pixel in the reconstructed image. And we evaluate the effectiveness of Tempest fonts generated by Gaussian method and its threshold of security.

    Effective classification and analysis of semantic contents are very important for the content-based indexing and retrieval of video database. Our research attempts to classify movie clips into three groups of commonly elicited emotions, namely excitement, joy and sadness, based on a set of abstract-level semantic features extracted from the film sequence. In particular, these features consist of six visual and audio measures grounded on the artistic film theories. A unique sieving-structured neural network is proposed to be the classifying model due to its robustness. The performance of the proposed model is tested with 101 movie clips excerpted from 24 award-winning and well-known Hollywood feature films. The experimental result of 97.8% correct classification rate, measured against the collected human-judges, indicates the great potential of using abstract-level semantic features as an engineered tool for the application of video-content retrieval/indexing.

    Obtaining the best linear unbiased estimator (BLUE) of noisy signals is a traditional but powerful approach to noise reduction. Explicitly computing the BLUE usually requires the prior knowledge of the noise covariance matrix and the subspace to which the true signal belongs. However, such prior knowledge is often unavailable in reality, which prevents us from applying the BLUE to real-world problems. To cope with this problem, we give a practical procedure for approximating the BLUE without such prior knowledge. Our additional assumption is that the true signal follows a non-Gaussian distribution while the noise is Gaussian.

  • Effect of a Guard-Ring on the Leakage Current in a Si-PIN X-Ray Detector for a Single Photon Counting Sensor

    PIN diodes for digital X-ray detection as a single photon counting sensor were fabricated on a floating-zone (FZ) n-type (111), high resistivity (5-10 kΩcm) silicon substrates (500 µm thickness). Its electrical properties such as the leakage current and the breakdown voltage were characterized. The size of pixels was 100 µm100 µm. The p+ guard-ring was formed around the active area to reduce the leakage current. After the p+ active area and guard-ring were fabricated by the ion-implantation, the extrinsic-gettering on the wafer backside was performed to reduce the leakage current by n+ ion-implantation. PECVD oxide was deposited as an IMD layer on front side and then, metal lines were formed on both sides of wafers. The leakage current of detectors was significantly reduced with a guard-ring when compared with that without a guard ring. The leakage current showed the strong dependency on the gap distance between the active area and the guard ring. It was possible to achieve the leakage current lower than 0.2 nA/cm2.

  • Experimental Study on MUSIC-Based DOA Estimation by Using Universal Steering Vector

    MUSIC-based estimation of direction of arrival (DOA) using universal steering vector (USV) is experimentally studied. A four-element array antenna and a four-channel receiver are employed for the experiment. In order to improve the accuracy of DOA estimation, USV which has already included the effect of mutual coupling between array elements and effect of array elements themselves is compensated to further include the electric delay and loss of four channels in the receiver. The compensated USV (C-USV) approach proposed in this paper does not need the time-consuming measurement of array element pattern because the compensating matrix for USV is obtained by measuring the S parameters between RF input ports of the feeding cables and IF output ports of the receiver. The experimental results of MUSIC-based DOA estimation show that C-USV approach is an accurate, effective and practical method for the MUSIC-based DOA estimation.

    UHF radio frequency identification (RFID) has gathered significant interest in the field of long-distance automatic identification applications. Since UHF RFID shares the frequency band with other RFID and/or other wireless systems, it is important to determine how much interference can be applied without causing a significant degradation of anti-collision speed. In this paper, the permissible link quality for RFID anti-collision in a practical environment is discussed by considering an erroneous communication link, taking into account of bit encoding and the type of interference. We approach the quantification of permissible link quality experimentally along with protocol simulations and the mathematical analyses. An international standard protocol, employing frame slotted ALOHA, was used as the air protocol. For these investigations, the present authors developed a protocol simulator. The simulation results were compared with analytical values based on Poisson distribution. The investigation in the return (tag to reader) link, and the forward (reader to tag) link, were analyzed separately. As result of the protocol simulation, it is generally important to secure the Pulse Error Rate 10-4 or better in both return and forward links for the anti-collision of 64 or less tags. The quality of the return link may be relaxed when the application does not require fast anti-collision. The degradation of the forward link, on the other hand, may entail loss of important commands, resulting in extremely slow anti-collision. It is measured experimentally that the required link quality can be relaxed by up to 10 dB in the return links and by 5 dB in the forward link when the primary source of interference originates in the interfering readers.
