  • A Novel Transmission Diversity System in TDD-CDMA

    This paper presents a novel transmission diversity scheme for code division multiple access system. Conventional diversity receivers in mobile stations require space and complicated circuits, however, the proposed diversity schemes present significant diversity effect without any diversity equipment at the mobile station. It is possible to use the transmitter diversity at the base station by using the feature of time division duplex (TDD) which has strongly correlated fading patterns in both forward and reverse link. Computer simulation is performed to evaluate the performance of the proposed systems for single user environment. The performance of the system 1, which select best situated antenna, is analyzed and the BER performance for multiple access is presented.

    MTDMA (Multimedia, Multimode TDMA) system has been developed for the 3rd generation mobile communications. An adaptive modulation technique is employed, which select 16 QAM or QPSK modulations fit for the O (Indoor Office)/P (Outdoor to Indoor and Pedestrian) communication environments. The maximum user rate of 4 Mbps is realized. Basic specification is described for O, P and V environments.

  • Spectrum Resources Management on Two-Tier Cellular Networks

    For two-tier cellular network design, resource management between tiers is an important issue to be studied. In this paper, in order to use the network resources preciously, we considered sharing of the available spectrum between the tiers. We evaluate this sharing for two network architectures. In the first architecture, called System I, DS-CDMA is deployed in both tiers. In the second architecture, called System II, TDMA is deployed for users in the microcell tier and CDMA for macrocell users. Using analytically evaluated intercell interference for a two-tier cellular system, we will show the performance and the allowable system capacity for the above systems.

  • Temperature and Metal-Vapor Near Contacts in Pd Breaking Arcs by Spectroscopic Measurement

    In this study the spectral intensities of a breaking arc were measured near the cathode and the anode between separating Pd contacts in a DC 50 V/5 A circuit, and arc temperature and metal-vapor quantity and density were calculated. Results show the radial distribution of temperature in the cross section of an arc column was constant both near the cathode and the anode from the beginning to the extinction of the breaking arc. Near the cathode the arc temperature in the position of the peak value of spectral intensity rose to about 6000 K at the beginning and remained constant, but near the anode it rose to about 6000 K at the beginning and then decreased towards the extinction of the arc. Both near the cathode and the anode metal-vapor quantity and density rose suddenly at the beginning. Afterwards, they fell near the cathode until extinction. But they became constant approaching extinction near the anode. And the metal-vapor quantity was greater and the density higher near the cathode than near the anode.

  • A Fast Frequency Switching Synthesizer with a Digitally Controlled Delay Generator

    We have developed a new type of phase interpolation DDS with a digitally controlled delay generator. The new DDS is similar to a sine output DDS in that it produces low spurious signals, but it does not require a sine look-up table. Periodic jitter in the MSB of the DDS accumulator is reduced with the digitally controlled delay generator. Experimental results confirm successful frequency synthesizer operation in which the spurious signal level is successfully reduced to less than that the MSB of the accumulator.

  • Efficient Encoding of Excitation Codes Using Trained Partial Algebraic Codebook

    An efficient encoding method of excitation codes using a partial algebraic codebook (PAC) is proposed. Since the conventional algebraic code excited linear prediction (ACELP) encodes the positions and signs of all excitation pulses separately, the bits required for encoding excitation codes take a large portion of the total bit rate. Vector quantization (VQ) of the positions and signs of the excitation pulses results in a PAC. Using PAC instead of the full set of algebraic codes, we can reduce the bits required to encode the excitation codes while maintaining the output speech quality. An iterative training algorithm is proposed to obtain the suboptimal PAC by modifying the Lloyd algorithm. Simulation results show that considerable bit savings can be obtained with only a small amount of degradation in the segmental signal to noise ratio (SEGSNR).

  • An Efficient Mandarin Text-to-Speech System on Time Domain

    This paper describes a complete Mandarin text-to-speech system on time domain. We take advantage of the advancement of memory technology, which achieves ever-increasing capacity and ever-lower price. We try to collect as more as possible the synthesis units in a Mandarin text-to-speech system. With such an effort, we developed simpler speech processing techniques and achieved faster processing speed by using only an ordinary personal computer. We also developed delicate methods to measure the intelligibility, comprehensibility, and naturalness of a Mandarin text-to-speech system. Our system performs very well compared with existing systems. We first develop a set of useful algorithms and methods to deal with some features of the syllables, such as duration, amplitude, fundamental frequency, pause, and so on. Based on these algorithms and methods, we then build a Mandarin text-to-speech system. Given any Chinese text in some computerized form, e. g. , in BIG-5 code representation, our system can pronounce the text in real time. Our text-to-speech system runs on an IBM 80486 compatible PC, with no special hardware for signal processing. The evaluation of our text-to-speech system is based on a proposed subjective evaluation method. An evaluation was made by 51 undergraduate students. The intelligibility of our text-to-speech system is 99. 5%, the comprehensibility of our text-to-speech system is 92. 6%, and the naturalness of our text-to-speech system is 81. 512 points in a percentile grading system (the highest score is 100 points, and the lowest score is 0 point). Other 40 Ph. D. students also did the same evaluation about naturalness. The result shows that the naturalness of our text-to-speech system is 82. 8 points in a percentile grading system.

    We present experimental results for a structural learning method of feed-forward neural-network classifiers using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) network and Species Genetic Algorithm (SGA). PCA network is used as a means for reducing the number of input units. SGA, a modified GA, is employed for selecting the proper number of hidden units and optimizing the connection links. Experimental results show that the proposed method is a useful tool for choosing an appropriate architecture for high dimensions.

    This paper presents two kinds of simplification methods for incompletely specified sequential machines. The strategy of the methods is that as many states in original machines are covered in the simplification processes as possible. The purpose of the methods is to derive a simplified machine having either the largest maximal compatible set or its subset. With the methods, one of the minimal machines can not be always derived, but a near-minimal machine can be obtained more quickly with less memory, since they need not derive all the compatible sets. In this paper, the effectiveness of the methods is checked by applying them to simplification problems of incompletely specified machines generated by using random numbers, and of the MCNC benchmark machines. The experimental results show that our methods can derive a simplified machine quickly, especially for machines having a great number of states or don't care rate.

    The switch LSI described here takes advantage of the special characteristics of fully-depleted CMOS/SIMOX devicesthat is, source/drain capacitances and threshold voltages that are lower than those of conventional bulk CMOS devicesto boost the I/O bit rate. The double-edge triggered MUX/DEMUX which uses a frame synchronization logic, and the active-pull-up I/O provide a 144-pin, 2. 5-Gbps/pin interface on the chip. The 220-kgate rerouting banyan switching network with 110-kbit RAM operates at an internal clock frequency of 312 MHz. The CMOS/SIMOX LSI consumes 8. 4 W when operating with a 2-V power supply, and has four times the throughput of conventional one-chip ATM switch LSIs.

    In this paper, we propose dynamic cepstral representations to effectively capture the temporal information of cepstral coefficients. The number of speech frames for the regression analysis to extract a dynamic cepstral coefficient is inversely proportional to the cepstral order since the cepstral coefficients of higher orders are more fluctuating than those of lower orders. By exploiting the relationship between the window length for extracting a dynamic cepstral coefficient and the statistical variance of the cepstral coefficient, we propose three kinds of windowing methods in this work: an utterance-specific variance-ratio windowing method, a statistical variance-ratio windowing method, and an inverse-lifter windowing method. Intra-speaker, inter-speaker, and speaker-independent recognition tests on 100 phonetically balanced words are carried out to evaluate the performance of the proposed order-dependent windowing methods.

  • Straight-Line Experiment and Numerical Simulation for RZ-Signal Long-Distance Transmission with Periodic Dispersion Compensation

    RZ signal transmission in an anomalous region with periodic dispersion compensation is examined by a straight-line experiment in terms of the compensation ratio, the signal power, and the pulse width. The optimum condition enables single-channel 20-Gbit/s RZ signal and two-WDM-channel 20-Gbit/s signals (40-Gbit/s in total) to be transmitted over 5,520 km and 2,160 km, respectively. Numerical simulations with the assistance of a basic theory enables analysis of the experimental results. It is shown that the balance between the waveform distortion and the remaining Gordon-Haus jitter determines the optimum conditions to achieve the longest transmission distance. Excess dispersion compensation results in waveform distortion, while insufficient compensation causes a greater amount of remaining jitter. Moreover, spectrum deformation during propagation is experimentally and numerically clarified to have a large effect on the transmission performance, especially for WDM transmission.

    In this paper we derive the expressions of the spectra of waveform relaxation operators for linear differential-algebraic equations which stem from circuit simulation. These expressions suggest ways to split the matrices of the circuit equations such that waveform relaxation will converge. Numerical experimental results are given.

  • Optical Parallel Transmission with Multi-Wavelength for High Speed Communications on Indoor Channels

    In indoor optical channels, intersymbol interference (ISI) due to multipath propagation prevents high data rate transmission. In this paper, a new Optical Multi-Wavelength Modulation technique has been investigated for improving the quality of transmission. In this technique, parallel transmission is used, which lowers the data rate per channel and thus reduces the effects of ISI. Furthermore, parallel coding is used in predetermined parallel branches, so that coding can correct errors without changing the system data rate. Simulation results show that a combination of these methods can achieve high quality transmission without reduction of the total data rate.

    We have developed a half-duplex spread spectrum-direct sequence (SS-DS) 2. 4 GHz band transceiver (T/R) unit having a smaller size and lower power consumption. A highly efficient elastic SAW convolver with chirp interdigital transducers (IDTs) has been used in the correlation circuit of receiver unit. The code shift keying (CSK) modulation is used in the T/R unit. The size of T/R unit is 90 50 11 mm and the weight is 75 grams. The power consumption of T/R unit is 1. 4 watts. We found that the bit error rate (BER) was less than 10-6 over the range of 0-150 m outdoors and 0-80 m indoors without a digital error detection and correction method. In this case, the data rate was 102 kbps and the transmit RF power was 2. 5 mW/MHz. The electrical characteristics, anti-interference and anti-multipath fading were also evaluated.

    In a distributed concurrent system such as a computer communication network, the system components communicate with each other via communication links in order to accomplish a desired distributed application. If the links are dynamically established among the components, the system configuration as well as its behavior becomes complex. In this paper, we give formal specification of such a dynamically reconfigurable system in which the components are modeled by communicating finite state machines executed concurrently with the communication links which are dynamically established and disconnected. We also present an algorithm to validate the safety and link-related properties in the specified behavior. Finally, we design and implement a simulator and a validator that enables execution and validation of the given specification, respectively.

    Ferroelectric non-volatile memory (FeRAM) has been inspiring interests since bismuth layer perovskite material family was found to provide "Fatigue Free" endurance, superior retention and imprint characteristics. In this paper, we will provide new circuits technology for FeRAM developed to implement high speed operation, low voltage operation and low power consumption. Performance of LSI embedded with FeRAM for contactless IC card is also provided to demonstrate the feasibility of the circuit technology.

  • Influence of the Shape of Contact Surface on the Spatial Distribution of Spectral Intensity of Breaking Arcs in Palladium Contacts

    In a DC 50 V/5 A circuit, the relationship between the number of breaking arcs and the spatial distribution of the spectral intensity of breaking arcs of long duration near the cathode in palladium contact were examined through substitution of the contact surfaces of three different shapes: flat and spherical (1 mm radius and 2 mm radius). Findings show the distribution of spectral intensity in Pd arcs to be influenced remarkably by the shape of contact surface and the number of breaking arcs. However, the temperature of Pd arcs was affected neither by the shape of contact surface nor by the number of breaking arcs. The metal-vapor quantity present differed for flat and spherical surface contacts; however, it was not affected by the radius of the curved contact surfaces or by the number of breaking arcs. Additionally, the longer the duration of the breaking arc, the more metal-vapor was presented in the beginning of the arc. Furthermore, arc tracks on contact surfaces were observed with microscopes, clarifying that the relationship between the area of the clouded white metal on the cathode and the shape of contact surface is the same as the relationship between the existent area of measured spectra and the shape of the contact surface.

  • Minimization of Output Errors of FIR Digital Filters by Multiple Decompositions of Signal Word

    FIR digital filters composed of parallel multiple subfilters are proposed. A binary expression of an input signal is decomposed into multiple shorter words, which drive the subfilters having different length. The output error is evaluated by mean squared and maximum spectra. A fast algorithm is also proposed to determine optimal filter lengths and coefficients of subfilters. Many examples confirm that the proposed filters generate smaller output errors than conventional filters under the condition of specified number of multiplications and additions in filter operations. Further, multiplier and adder structures (MAS) to perform the operations of the proposed filters are also presented. The number of gates used in the proposed MAS and its critical path are estimated. The effectiveness of the proposed MAS is confirmed.

  • A Performance Analysis of Buffered DQDB Network with Request Arrival Process Depending on Its Request Counter Value and Its Location on the Buses

    The location of stations on the buses can not be ignored in the analysis of the DQDB protocol, especially when traffic load is heavy. In this paper, we propose a new method to model the DQDB (Distributed Queue Dual Bus) protocol by assuming that the request arrival process depends on both the value of the request counter and the location of a station on the buses. By taking these dependences, we can catch the real behavior of the DQDB stations, which is locationally dependent and unfair under heavy load traffic. Based on this model, we analyze the DQDB system with finite buffer by considering the request counter states and buffer states separately and obtain the throughput, mean packet delay and packet reject probability of individual stations. The throughput in individual stations matches that of simulation very well within the range of traffic up to the channel capacity. Also the delay and packet reject rate performance is good up to moderate traffic load. These numerical results reveal the properties of the location dependence and the unfairness of DQDB system under heavy load condition. The analytic results under heavy load traffic for a general DQDB system has not been reported till now. Therefore we conclude that our model and analysis are valid and effective.
