  • Pragmatic Trellis Coded MPSK with Bandwidth Expansion on Rayleigh Fading Channel

    A Pragmatic Trellis Coded MPSK on a Rayleigh fading channel is analyzed. This scheme allows bandwidth expansion ratio to be varied aiming at an optimization between complexity of the system design and improvement of coding gain. In order to vary the bandwidth expansion ratio, a punctured convolutional code is used. The performance of the proposed TC-2mPSK on a Rayleigh fading channel is theoretically analyzed. In the test examples, the BER performances of TC-QPSK and TC-8PSK are evaluated by theoretical analyses and computer simulations at the encoder parameters of K3 and r3/4. The results show that the proposed scheme can attain better performance not only over the uncoded scheme but over the conventional Pragmatic TCM.

    Analysis of frequency-dependent lossy transmission lines is very important for designing the high-speed VLSI, MCM and PCB. The frequency-dependent parameters are always obtained as tabulated data. In this paper, a new curve fitting technique of the tabulated data for the moment matching technique in the interconnect analysis is presented. This method based on Chebyshev interpolation enhances the efficiency of the moment matching technique.

    A zerotree image-coding scheme is introduced that effectively exploits the inter-scale self-similarities found in the octave decomposition by a wavelet transform. A zerotree is useful for efficiently coding wavelet coefficients; its efficiency was proved by Shapiro's EZW. In the EZW coder, wavelet coefficients are symbolized, then entropy-coded for further compression. In this paper, we analyze the symbols produced by the EZW coder and discuss the entropy for a symbol. We modify the procedure used for symbol-stream generation to produce lower entropy. First, we modify the fixed relation between a parent and children used in the EZW coder to raise the probability that a significant parent has significant children. The modified relation is flexibly modified again based on the observation that a significant coefficient is more likely to have significant coefficients in its neighborhood. The three relations are compared in terms of the number of symbols they produce.

    Voice activity detection (VAD) is to determine whether a short time speech frame is voice or silence. VAD is useful in reducing the mean speech coding rate by suppressing transmission during silence periods, and is effective in transmitting speech and other data simultaneously. This letter describes a VAD system that uses a neural network. The neural network gets several parameters by analyzing slices of the speech wave form, and outputs only one scalar value related to voice activity. This output is compared to a threshold to determine whether the slice is voice or silence. The mean code transfer rate can be reduced to less than 50% by using the proposed VAD system.

  • A Unified Lossless Coding Scheme for Gray-Level, Bi-Level and Compound Images

    A unified source coding method is highly desired for many systems that deal with images diversifying from 1 bit/pel bi-level documents to SHD (Super High Definition) images of 12 bit/pel for each color component, and progressive coding that allows images to be reconstructed with increasing pixel accuracy or spatial resolution is essential for many applications including World Wide Web, medical images archive, digital library, pre-press and quick look applications. In this paper, we propose a unified continuous-tone and bi-level image coding method with pyramidal and progressive transmission feature. Hierarchical structure is constructed by interlacing subsampling, and each hierarchy is encoded by DPCM combined with reduced Markov model. Simulation results show that the proposed method is a little inferior than JBIG for bi-level image coding but can achieve better lossless compression ratio for gray-level image coding than CREW, in which wavelet transform is exploited to construct hierarchical structure.

  • A Binding Algorithm for Retargetable Compilation to Non-orthogonal DSP Architectures

    This paper presents a new binding algorithm for a retargetable compiler which can deal with diverse architectures of application specific embedded processors. The architectural diversity includes a "non-orthogonal" datapath configuration where all the registers are not equally accessible by all the functional units. Under this assumption, binding becomes a hard task because inadvertent assignment of an operation to a functional unit may rule out possible assignment of other operations due to unreachability among datapath resources. We propose a new BDD-based algorithm to solve this problem. While most of the conventional methods are based on the covering of expression trees obtained by decomposing DFGs, our algorithm works directly on the DFGs so as to avoid infeasible bindings. In the experiments, a feasible binding which satisfies the reachability is found or the deficiency of datapath is detected within a few seconds.

  • Restructuring Logic Representations with Simple Disjunctive Decompositions

    Simple disjunctive decomposition is a special case of logic function decompositions, where variables are divided into two disjoint sets and there is only one newly introduced variable. It offers an optimal structure for a single-output function. This paper presents two techniques that enable us to apply simple disjunctive decompositions with little overhead. Firstly, we propose a method to find symple disjunctive decomposition forms efficiently by limiting decomposition types to be found to two: a decomposition where the bound set is a set of symmetric variables and a decomposition where the output function is a 2-input function. Secondly, we propose an algorithm that constructs a new logic representation for a simple disjunctive decomposition just by assigning constant values to variables in the original representation. The algorithm enables us to apply the decomposition with keeping good structures of the original representation. We performed experiments for decomposing functions and confirmed the efficiency of our method. We also performed experiments for restructuring fanout free cones of multi-level logic circuits, and obtained better results than when not restructuring them.

    Excitation of magnetostatic surface waves by coplanar waveguide transducers is analyzed by using the integral kernel expansion method. The Fourier integral for the current density is derived in terms of an unknown normal component of the magnetic flux density on slot region of a coplanar waveguide. The integral kernel is expanded into a series of Legendre polynomials and then applying Galerkin's method to the unknown field reduces the Fourier integral to a system of linear equations for the unknown coefficients. In this process, we should take into account the edge conditions which show nonreciprocal characteristics depending on frequency. The present method shows excellent agreement with experiments.

  • FDTD Analysis of Mutual Coupling of Cavity-Backed Slot Antenna Array

    This paper discusses a method to evaluate mutual couplings of cavity-backed slot antennas using the FDTD technique. The antenna fed by the short-ended probe is considered, which is investigated as an element of the power transmission antenna, Spacetenna, for the solar power satellite SPS2000. It is found from the FDTD computation on E-plane two- and four-element array antennas that the size of the problem space should be larger for the evaluation of the mutual coupling than for the estimation of the input impedance. Since enlarging the size of the problem space requires a large amount of computer storage, it is not practical for computer simulations. In order to carry out accurate estimations of the mutual coupling with relatively small amount of computer memory, the problem space is extended only in the broadside of the array antenna and in the other directions there are ten cells between the antenna surface and the outer boundary. Computer simulations demonstrate that there are no differences between the results of the proposed problem space geometry and the problem space extended in each direction of the axis coordinate by the same number of cells. Furthermore comparisons of computed and experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach after discussing how large the size of the problem space is required to estimate the mutual coupling.

    Development of large-scale software is usually conducted through a project to unite a work force. In addition, no matter what kind of life cycle model is employed, a development plan is required for a software development project in order for the united work force to function effectively. For the project to be successful, it is also necessary to set management objectives based on this plan and confirm that they are achieved. This method is considered to be effective, but actually making a software development project and following the achievement of the management objectives at each step is not easy because predicting the necessary work amount and risks that the project involves is difficult in software development. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a system to support software project management so that the project manager can manage the entire project and the work load is reduced. This paper proposes a meta-model of work structure of software development projects for project management by using an object-oriented database with constraints as well as a framework for software project management systems based on this meta-model. Also proven, through an example of a system that analyzes repercussions on progress of a software development project, is that the meta-model and framework are effective in software project management.

    For the improvement of software quality and productivity, the author aims at realizing a software development environment to develop software through utilizing the merits of group work. Since networking is necessary for collaborative software development, he has developed a software distributed development environment for collaborative software development. In this environment, discussions about software design are held through a communication network, and the contents of discussions are recorded as software design decisions and decision rationale. One feature of this environment is that the contents of discussions can be recorded in on-line real time and reused without reconstructing the information recorded through this environment. This paper clarifies the essential conditions for actualizing this environment and proposes an information structure model for recording the contents of discussions that actualizes the above-mentioned feature. The effectiveness of the proposed model is proved through an example of its application to software design discussions.

    We introduce an ontology for transportation systems demand forecasting and its implementation into a decision support system (DSS) generator. The term ontology, as we use it here, means a collection of building blocks necessary and sufficient to construct a skeleton of a specific DSS, that is a task ontology. The ontology is specified in constraint logic, which also ensures a good support for modularity.

    This paper describes a method to represent m output functions using shared multi-terminal binary decision diagrams (SMTBDDs). The SMTBDD(k) consists of multi-terminal binary decision diagrams (MTBDDs), where each MTBDD represents k output functions. An SMTBDD(k) is the generalization of shared binary decision diagrams (SBDDs) and MTBDDs: for k=1, it is an SBDD, and for k=m, it is an MTBDD. The size of a BDD is the total number of nodes. The features of SMTBDD(k)s are: 1) they are often smaller than SBDDs or MTBDDs; and 2) they evaluate k outputs simultaneously. We also propose an algorithm for grouping output functions to reduce the size of SMTBDD(k)s. Experimental results show the compactness of SMTBDD(k)s. An SMTBDDmin denotes the smaller SMTBDD which is either an SMTBDD(2) or an SMTBDD(3) with fewer nodes. The average relative sizes for SBDDs, MTBDDs, and SMTBDDs are 1. 00, 152. 73, and 0. 80, respectively.

  • Life of Dispenser Cathodes and Oxide Cathodes in Laminar-Flow Type and Crossover Type Electron Guns

    Differences in the behavior of dispenser cathodes and oxide cathodes in laminar-flow type and crossover type electron guns were investigated by experiments and simulations under high-current-density conditions. When an oxide cathode is operated under such conditions, the heating effect due to Joule heat in the oxide layer exceeds the cooling effect, depending on the product of the work function and the cathode current, resulting in a rise in the cathode temperature. This rise in cathode temperature aggravates deterioration of emission characteristics during the life of an oxide cathode. In the case of the dispenser cathode, however, the cathode temperature decreases under high-current-density conditions. When an oxide cathode in a crossover type electron gun is operated, equipotential surfaces are formed in the curved surface in the oxide layer. The formation of an equipotential surface leads to relaxation of the loading. It is considered that this is the reason for the longer life of an oxide cathode in a crossover type electron gun than that of an oxide cathode in a laminar-flow type electron gun.

  • Optimal Estimation of Three-Dimensional Rotation and Reliability Evaluation

    We discuss optimal rotation estimation from two sets of 3-D points in the presence of anisotropic and inhomogeneous noise. We first present a theoretical accuracy bound and then give a method that attains that bound, which can be viewed as describing the reliability of the solution. We also show that an efficient computational scheme can be obtained by using quaternions and applying renormalization. Using real stereo images for 3-D reconstruction, we demonstrate that our method is superior to the least-squares method and confirm the theoretical predictions of our theory by applying bootstrap procedure.

    In this paper, a new method is proposed for solving forbidden state problems in non-ordinary controlled Petri nets (NCPNs) with uncontrollable transitions. Using a precedence subnet and a boundary subnet with decision-free properties, the behavior of markings are analyzed structurally. An efficient algorithm is presented for calculating the number of total tokens in forbidden places reachable from a marking. This paper derives necessary and sufficient conditions for identifying admissible markings and boundary markings in terms of the precedence subnet and the boundary subnet.

  • Performance Comparison of Two Retransmission Control Schemes for Slow-Frequency-Hopped Communication Systems

    This letter proposes a new retransmission control scheme for slow-frequency-hopped communication systems, in which the number of (re)transmitted packets is adaptively decreased in a certain period. Performance of the proposed scheme is analyzed and compared with that of the conventional scheme in terms of the normalized throughput and the 98% packet transmission delay. The numerical results show the superiority of the proposed scheme.

  • Real-Time Aggregation and Transport of Stored VBR Videos over a CBR Channel

    This paper investigates the lossless video aggregation and transport, a concept of transmitting a group of video sessions as a bundle over a communication network. We focus on the design of optimal transmission plan with minimum receiver buffer requirement for stored variable bit-rate (VBR) videos over a constant bit-rate (CBR) channel without incurring buffer underflow and overflow. For a single video, an efficient algorithm is proposed to calculate the optimal transmission plan in only O(N) time, a significant improvement of the previous result with time complexity of O(N2log N). For multiple video sessions, we propose an aggregation scheme to calculate the changes of optimal transmission plans at the joints or separations, where a session bundled in the aggregated video stream begins or stops. The experimental results show that our algorithms stand out in terms of simplicity and efficiency.

    In this paper, a new overload control strategy is proposed for a call control processor (CCP) in the base station controller (BSC) and processor utilization is measured. The proposed overload control strategy can regulate the call attempts by adopting measured processor utilization. A function, specifically a linear interpolation function based on Inverse Transform theory is used to convert controlled predictive average load rate in a call rejection rate. Then a call admission rate is obtained from the call rejection rate. Simulation shows that the proposed algorithm yields better performance than the conventional algorithm does under the heavy transient overload status in terms of call admission rate.

    In this paper, Orthogonal Multicode OFDM-DS/CDMA system using Partial Bandwidth Transmission is proposed. By using the flexible carrier allocation of OFDM, Partial Bandwidth Transmission is considered for high quality communication. Furthermore, multicode packet data transmission is presented. Multicode packet data transmission is very effective to handle variable data. Since the proposed system can detect the header information without complex control, it is also suitable for packet data transmission. The computer simulation results show that the BER performance of the proposed system with the ideal channel estimation is improved compared with the case of the conventional Orthogonal Multicode DS/CDMA system with ideal RAKE receivers. Moreover the proposed system with the channel estimation by MLS algorithm also shows the good BER performance. In packet data transmission, the delay and throughput performances are also improved in the proposed system.
