An Ordered Binary Decision Diagram (OBDD) is a directed acyclic graph representing a Boolean function. The size of OBDDs largely depends on the variable ordering. In this paper, we show the size of the OBDD representing the i-th bit of the output of n-bit/n-bit integer division is Ω ( 2(n-i)/8 ) for any variable ordering. We also show that -OBDDs, -OBDDs and -OBDDs representing integer division has the same lower bounds on the size. We develop new methods for proving lower bounds on the size of -OBDDs, -OBDDs and -OBDDs.

Wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) transmission systems have been intensely researched in order to increase the transmission capacity. One of the most important key devices for this use is erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) which feature a flattened gain, a high pumping efficiency and a low noise figure (NF), simultaneously. To fulfill these requirements, hybrid silica-based EDFAs (EDSFAs) composed of Al codoped and P/Al codoped EDSFs have been proposed so far. They are also attractive from the viewpoint of productivity, reliability, and cost-effectiveness. On the other hand, the optical bandwidth has been around 15 nm at most. In this paper, we have proposed newly designed hybrid EDSFAs for more than 25 nm optical bandwidth. The gain peak around 1. 53 µm can be suppressed through the saturation degree control in both EDSFs. The remaining obstacle is the diparound 1. 54 µm, which results in the relative gain non-uniformity of 10. 7% over the wavelength range from 1535 to 1560 nm. Owing to the glass composition optimization, the relative gain non-uniformity has been reduced to 5.8% without gain equalizers(GEQs), which is comparable to that of EDFFAs. As another solution, the hybrid EDSFA including two-stage Fabry Perot etalons as the GEQ has been proposed. In this configuration, the hybrid EDSFA has been designed to exhibit the gain profile similar to the summation of two sinusoidal curves, and the relative gain non-uniformity has been reduced to 3. 7%, which is almost equal to that of the hybrid EDFAs composed of EDSF and EDFF. Moreover, it has been demonstrated that newly developed hybrid EDSFAs exhibit a higher pumping efficiency and a lower NF than EDFFAs and hybrid EDSF/EDFFAs.

Wavelength conversion is considered to be one of the key technologies for the future advanced optical networks. So far, intense efforts have been made to realize this functionality by using semiconductor lasers/amplifiers, optical fibers, LiNbO3/semiconductor waveguides. In this paper, we propose a novel wavelength converter using an electroabsorption (EA) modulator. The operating principle is based on the cross-absorption modulation effect of an InGaAsP EA modulator. High quality conversion has been demonstrated at 20 Gbit/s over 30 nm of wavelength range. The applicability to high speed signals (>40 Gbit/s) was also demonstrated. In addition, to study the expected versatility for all optical signal processing applications, broadcasting and extinction-ratio-improvement capability were evaluated.

It becomes essential in practice to improve a processing rate and to divide an image into small segments adjusting a limited memory, because image filing systems handle large images up to A1 size. This paper proposes a new method of an automatic skew normalization, comprising a high-speed skew detection and a distortion-free dividing rotation. We have evaluated the proposed method from the viewpoints of the processing rate and the accuracy for typed documents. As results, the processing rate is 2. 9 times faster than that of a conventional method. A practical processing rate for A1 size documents can be achieved under the condition that the accuracy of a normalized angle is controlled within 0. 3 degrees. Especially, the rotation with dividing can have no error angle, even when the A1 size documents is divided into 200 segments, whereas the conventional method cause the error angle of 1. 68 degrees.

Macroscopic method for quantization of the evanescent fields brought about by total reflection is presented. Here, a semi-infinite space is assumed to be filled with a transparent dispersive dielectric with dielectric constant ε(ω) to the left of the plane z = 0, and be empty to the right of the plane. The wave is assumed to be incident from the left, and so the whole field is composed of the triplet of incident, reflected, and transmitted waves labeled by a continuous wave vector index. The transmitted wave in free space may be evanescent. The triplet is shown exactly without using slowly varying field approximation in dispersive medium to form orthogonal mode for different wave vectors, which provides the basis for the quantization of the triplet with taken into account of medium dispersion. The exact orthogonal relation reduces to the well known one if the dielectric is nondispersive, ε/ω = 0. By using the field expansion in terms of the orthogonal triplet modes, the total field energy is found to be the sum of the energies of independent harmonic oscillators. A discussion is also made on the wave momentum of evanescent field.

In this paper, a two-dimensional (2-D) binary-valued (BV) lapped transform (LT) is proposed. The proposed LT has basis images which take only BV elements and satisfies the axial-symmetric (AS) property. In one dimension, there is no 2-point LT with the symmetric basis vectors, and the property is achieved only with the non-overlapping basis which the Hadamard transform (HT) has. Hence, in two dimension, there is no 22-point separable ASLT, and only 2-D HT can be the 22-point separable AS orthogonal transform. By taking non-separable BV basis images, this paper shows that a 22-point ASLT can be obtained. Since the proposed LT is similar to HT, it is referred to as the lapped Hadamard transform (LHT). LHT of larger size is shown to be provided with a tree structure. In addition, LHT is shown to be efficiently implemented by a lattice structure.

The checkerboard effect is caused by the periodic time-variant property of multirate filters which consist of up-samplers and digital filters. Although the conditions for some one-dimensional (1D) multirate systems to avoid the checkerboard effect have been shown, the conditions for Multidimensional (MD) multirate systems have not been considered. In this paper, some theorems about the conditions for MD multirate filters without checkerboard effect are derived. In addition, we also consider MD multirate filter banks without checkerboard effect. Simulation examples show that the checkerboard effect can be avoided by using the proposed conditions.

This paper discusses a design technique for multidimensional (M-D) multirate filters which cause no checkerboard distortion. In the first part of this paper, a necessary and sufficient condition for M-D multirate filters to be checkerboard-distortion-free is derived in the frequency domain. Then, in the second part, this result is applied to a scanning line conversion system for television signals. To confirm the effectiveness of the derived condition, band-limiting filters with and without considering the condition are designed, and the results by these filters are compared. A reducibility of the number of delay elements in such a system is also considered to derive efficient implementation.

The VF (Variable-to-Fixed length) arithmetic coding method combines the advantage of an ordinary stream arithmetic code with the simplicity of a block code. One of the advantages of VF codes is that the transmission errors or channel errors do not propagate infinitely and are restricted to the block in question. In this paper, we propose a modified type of non-proper VF arithmetic coding method that defines an input alphabet subset according to both the number of codewords in the current codeword set and input symbol probability and that splits the codeword set completely for a newly defined alphabet subset when the codeword set becomes smaller by each splitting. The proposed coding method carrys out independence of each codeword and guarantees that there is no collision while there is a waste of codeword(s) in conventional AB-coding due to collision. We examine the performance of the proposed method and compare it with that of other VF codes in terms of compression ratio and algorithmic complexity.

Dense WDM techniques that exploit the enormous bandwidth of dispersion-shifted fibers (DSFs) while avoiding the impairments due to nonlinear effects are described. First, the nature of four-wave mixing (FWM), the dominant impairment factor in WDM transmission systems, is investigated using DSF installed in the field and laboratory experiments. This provides useful information for the practical design of WDM networks based on DSF. Second, practical techniques to reduce FWM impairment, unequal channel allocation and off-lambda-zero channel allocation (equal channel allocation in the novel 1580 nm band) along with gain-shifted erbium-doped fiber amplifiers for the 1570 to 1600 nm band, is described. Comparisons between off-lambda-zero and unequal channel allocation are provided in terms of the maximum transmission distance for various numbers of channels. Two schemes to immunize WDM systems against group velocity dispersion, span-by-span dispersion compensation and optical duobinary format, are presented. The combination of unequal channel allocation with off-lambda-zero channel allocation as well as the combination of two bands: the conventional 1550 nm band and the novel 1580 nm band are proven to be very useful in expanding the usable bandwidth of DSFs.

Image restoration using estimated parameters of image model and noise statistics is presented. The image is modeled as the output of a 2-D noncausal autoregressive (NCAR) model. The parameter estimation process is done by using the autocorrelation function and a biased term to a conventional least-squares (LS) method for the noncausal modeling. It is shown that the proposed method gives better results than the other parameter estimation methods which ignore the presence of the noise in the observation data. An appropriate image model selection process is also presented. A genetic algorithm (GA) for solving a multiobjective function with single constraint is discussed.

A fiber Bragg grating, which has periodical perturbation of the refractive index in the fiber core, acts as a wavelength selective reflection filter and steep optical spectrum can be realized by forming more than ten thousand of gratings along the fiber core. Owing to capability of making steep optical spectrum, fiber Bragg gratings has been expected to be introduced practical use as multiplexing or demultiplexing filters in dense WDM transmission systems. On the other hand, radiation mode loss, reflection side mode and temperature dependence of Bragg wavelength, should be improved to put the fiber Bragg grating to practical use in dense WDM transmission systems. In this paper, an optimum design and performance of the fiber Bragg grating for dense WDM systems are described. The photosensitive cladding fiber realized less than 0. 2 dB insertion loss at transmitted signal channels and less than 0. 1 dB splicing loss with standard single-mode fibers. An adequate apodization technique in the refractive index distribution suppressed reflection side modes. A temperature compensating package, which gives longitudinal strain with negative temperature dependence to a fiber Bragg grating, minimized temperature dependence of Bragg wavelength less than 0. 001 nm/. Thermal decay of Bragg grating was also investigated and adequate annealing condition was estimated to obtain sufficient stability for practical use in dense WDM transmission.

In this paper, we briefly describe the proposed radio access scheme based on CDMA/FDD for next-generation mobile radio systems, and evaluate its performance through laboratory and field experiments on transmission power control (TPC) and diversity, which are the key technologies to achieve efficient CDMA systems. The design of the practical TPC method is discussed, and a robust method is presented for operation in low signal to interference power ratio (SIR). Laboratory experiments demonstrate that space and path diversity effectively improve the TPC performance in the Doppler frequency range of 40 to 80 Hz, and reduces the required Eb/N0 to achieve the BER of 10-3. The necessary diversity order for multipath fading mitigation in all the Doppler frequency range is also investigated. Through the field experiments in urban area of Tokyo using a developed system at 0. 96 Mcps, a low required Eb/N0 of 2. 8 dB can be obtained because of the effectiveness of the diversity.

    1365-1373

Variable-rate data transmission with no rate indicator is described for direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) mobile radio. The variable-rate data to be transmitted is block-encoded using a cyclic redundancy check (CRC) and then convolutionally encoded before being spread. The convolutionally encoded data is always brought to the zero state at the end of the data sequence within each frame. Blind rate detection is incorporated into the process of Viterbi-decoding the received convolutional-coded frame data. At each possible end bit position (i. e. , each possible transmission rate), the trellis path arriving at the zero-state is selected if its path metric satisfies a certain condition, and is then traced back to recover the frame data. CRC is used to determine whether the recovered data is correct or not. The path selection condition is described. The average frame error rate (FER) and average false detection rate (FDR) are evaluated by computer simulation under frequency selective multipath Rayleigh fading environments and the results are compared with another variable-rate transmission scheme using a rate indicator.

A new radar system is presented, which consists of one main radar and cooperative plural transponders. The transponders are integrated in the respective retrodirective antennas which are arranged beyond the horizon in such a manner as they surround the main radar. An algorithm for determining the three-dimensional target position is given. Computer simulations have been made for different target positions by assuming measurement errors. A target whose monostatic radar cross section is small or has been specially reduced by absorbing materials could be detected by this system if it is properly constructed.

This paper newly proposes the CMT/IM/DD system for universal radio access networks where radio base stations (RBSs) and an optic backbone network are universally available among different radio services and providers. In the proposed system, the Chirp Fourier transformer at an RBS, converts the received FDM multiple radio service signals into optical TDM format signals, then transfers them over the optic fiber-link. This paper is focused on the discussion about the performance on the up-link of the CMT/IM/DD system. A new type of the configuration of CMT and the direct demodulation for the CMT signal are also proposed, and the SNR considering inter-symbol and inter-channel interferences caused by the CMT is theoretically analyzed. Analysis results show that the overall SNR performance of the CMT system is superior to the conventional SCM system when the number of radio channels is more than 26.
