  • Spectrum-Adaptive Band-Limiting Technique for 3-D Non-orthogonal Sampling

    This paper proposes a three-dimensional (3-D) band-limiting technique for a conversion of Simple Cubic Sampling into Body-Centered Cubic Sampling. Based on spectral distribution of the original signal, the proposed method adaptively varies the passband shape of a band-limiting filter in order to preserve informations of the original picture. By applying this method to 3-D moving pictures, we can preserve resolution on each axis without introducing heavy aliasing error and avoid degradation of picture quality such as ringing in still pictures or blurring in moving pictures. The examples given in this paper demonstrate these advantages.

  • Tissue Extraction from Ultrasonic Image by Prediction Filtering

    An image obtained by ultrasonic medical equipment is poor in quality because of speckle noise, that is caused by the quality of ultrasonic beam and so on. Thus, it is very difficult to detect internal organs or the diseased tissues from a medical ultrasonic image by the processing, which is used only gray-scale of the image. To analyze the ultrasonic image, it is necessary to use not only gray-scale but also appropriate statistical character. In this paper, we suggest a new method to extract regions of internal organs from an ultrasonic image by the discrimination function. The discrimination function is based on gray-scale and statistical characters of the image. This function is determined by using parameters of the multi-dimensional autoregressive model.

    This paper provides an architectural study of optical ring trunk-transmission networks using either Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) or Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM). A timeslot arrangement algorithm for distributed controlled TDM rings is proposed that minimizes the number of slots (wavelengths) required in bi-directional ring networks. This algorithm is applied in a straightforward manner to wavelength arrangement in WDM ring networks. The technique, characterized by timeslot (or wavelength) conversion, realizes common add/drop procedures in all Add/Drop Multiplexers (ADMs) when they are connected logically in a mesh topology. A self-healing algorithm is also proposed for network restoration. It offers good performance in terms of protection line-capacity, restoration delay, and survivability against multiple failures.

    An attenuation correction method was proposed for laser-produced plasma emission computed tomography (ECT), which is based on a relation of the attenuation coefficient and the emission coefficient in plasma. Simulation results show that the reconstructed images are dramatically improved in comparison to the reconstructions without attenuation correction.

    Exploring enormous state graphs represented implicitly by ordered binary decision diagrams (OBDDs) is one of the most successful applications of OBDDs. However, our worst-case analysis of implicit graph representations by OBDDs shows that there are cases where OBDD representations are not optimal and require more space than adjacency lists. As an improvement, we propose a new type of BDDs, called Patricia BDDs, which are capable of implicit representation of graphs while their worst-case sizes are kept equal or less than adjacency lists and OBDDs.

  • High-Speed Optical Fiber Networks Using Code-Division Multiple Access for Future Real-Time Computer Communications

    In this paper, a feasible optical code-division multiple-access (CDMA) technique is proposed for high-speed computer networks using prime codes and optical signal processing to guarantee real-time data communications. All-optical architectures for fastly tunable CDMA encoders and decoders are presented, which can be feasibly implemented in the optical domain by using electrooptic switches and optical delay lines. This can support an ultrahigh throughput and a very fast reconfiguration time. Furthermore, we present a self-synchronized sample technique to ensure the correct phase synchronization between optical clock stream and asynchronous electronic data at each electrooptic modulator of an optical CDMA transmitter.

    In this paper, we analyze the throughput and delay performances of the CDMA unslotted ALOHA system considering packet retransmisson. We also clarify the stability of the system. Based on these results, we propose the optimal retransmission control (ORC) to improve the performances. The ORC is the scheme to prevent the system from drifting to an undesirable operating point by controlling the birth rate of retransmitted packets. As a result, it is shown that the throughput and delay performances of the system with the ORC are better than without the ORC and the system does not drift to an undesirable operating point.

    A direct-conversion receiver with a full digital logic FSK demodulator is presented. It is developed from the quadricorrelator which is known as a frequency detector. We show that the performance of the receiver converges to that of the analog quadricorrelator receiver as the number of mixing axes increases, and obtain the optimum filter bandwidth by computer simulation.

    A deterministic pushdown automaton (dpda) having just one stack symbol is called a deterministic restricted one-counter automaton (droca). A deterministic one-counter automaton (doca) is a dpda having only one stack symbol, with the exception of a bottom-of-stack market. The class of languages accepted by droca's is a proper subclass of the class of languages accepted by doca's. Valiant has shown that the regularity problem for doca's is decidable in a single exponential worst-case time complexity. In this paper, we prove that the class of languages accepted by droca's which accept by final state is incomparable with the class of languages accepted by droca's which accept by empty stack (strict droca's), and that the intersection of them is equal to the class of strict regular languages. In addition, we present a new direct branching algorithm for checking the regularity for not only a strict droca but also a real-time droca which accepts by final state. Then we show that the worst-case time complexity of our algorithm is polynomial in the size of each droca.

    In packet radio networks with TDMA, the throughput performance of network should be degraded due to the unequal traffic of each user. To overcome this problem, Mini-Slotted Alternating Priorities (MSAP) and TDMA with Parallel Transmission (TDMA/PT) were proposed. Especially, TDMA/PT can attain the thorughput performance more than one, even under unequal traffic. However, TDMA/PT cannot be used for mobile networks, because each terminal should know the location of every other terminal. In this paper, we propose an entirely new protocol named Slot Reservation TDMA with Parallel Transmissino: SR-TDMA/PT," which is suitable for mobile networks because a central station is able to locate every terminal easily. The central station also reserves time slots for each terminal so as to transmit packets in parallel as much as possible. Therefore, the throughput performance of SR-TDMA/PT is higher than TDMA/PT. We describe SR-TDMA/PT in detail and evaluate the performance of this protocol by simulation under various conditions.

    Three dimensional model based coding methods are proposed as next generation image coding methods. These new representations need 3D reconstruction techniques. This paper presents a method that extracts the surfaces of static objects that occlude other objects from a spatiotemporal image captured with straight-line camera motion. We propose the concept of occlusion types and show that the occlusion types are restricted to only eight patterns. Furthermore, we show occlusion type pairs contain information that confirms the existence of surfaces. Occlusion information gives strong cues for segmentation and representation. The method can estimate not only the 3D positions of edge points but also the surfaces bounded by the edge points. We show that combinations of occlusion types contain information that can confirm surface existence. The method was tested successfully on real images by reconstructing flat and curved surfaces. Videos can be hierarchically structured with the method. The method makes various applications possible, such as object selective image communication and object selective video editing.

    To develop human interface for virtual environment, we have constructed a tensed strings based interface device called SPIDAR, which allow us to manipulate virtual object directly just like in real space. SPIDAR can both measure the movement of user's finger tip and offer force display. Since proper force feedback comes out of the proper position measurement, in this paper, we will analyze the possible reasons that may cause position measurement error, and propose an algorithm which can revise the error and improve position measurement precision.

    In order to produce high quality multimedia contents efficiently, DTPP -desktop program production system- has been proposed. The DTPP is capable of supporting all the necessary procedures of program production, from planning to broadcasting, by molding each process into the desktop environment of program producers. The DTPP system consists of multimedia terminals, a media server, a computing server, and network system. In the DTPP, new technological concepts such as cooperative program production, indexing and utilization of attribute information of images, and video components and spatio-temporal editing will be installed.

    Special memory and embedded memories used in a newly designed MPEG2 decorder LSI are described. Orthogonal memory, which has a functionality of parallel-to-serial transposition, is employed in a IDCT(Inverse Discrete Cosine Transform) block for small area and low-power. The orthogonal memory realizes the special pupose with 50% of the area and the power compared with using flip-flop array. FIFO's and other dual-port memories are designed by using a single-port RAM operated twice in one clock cycle to reduce cost. Flip-Flop cell is one of the important memory elements in the MPEG environment, and is also improved for the low-cost optimizing functionality for video processing. The area and power of the fabricated MPEG2 decoder chip are reduced by 20% using these techniques. As for testability, direct test mode is implemented for small area. An instruction RAM is placed outside the pad area in parallel to a normal instruction ROM and activated by Al-masterslice for extensive debugging and an early sampling. Other memory related techniques and the key features of the decoder LSI are also described.

  • An Isolated Word Speech Recognition Using Fusion of Auditory and Visual Information

    We propose a speech recognition method using fusion of auditory and visual information for accurate speech recognition. Since we use both auditory information and visual information, we can perform speech recognition more accurately in comparison with the case of either auditory information or visual information. After processing each information by HMM, they are fused by linear combination with weight coefficient. We performed experiments and confirmed the validity of the proposed method.

    Storage system in a multimedia server must satisfy two contradicting requirements: real-timeliness and large number of parallel user requests. Efficient algorithms for data placement, disk head scheduling, and request admission control schemes are needed to support the requirements. In this paper, we propose efficient schemes to maximize system resource utilization and service availability: cyclic placement scheme, subgroup retrieval scheme, and measurement-based request admission control scheme. Performance analysis through simulation revealed that the amount of system buffers required can be reduced by 70% approximately.

    Signal Transition Graphs (STG'S) [1] are Petrinets [2], which were introduced to represent a behavior of asynchronous circuits. To derive logic functions from an STG, the reachability graph should be constructed. In the verification of STG's some method based on Occurrence nets (OCN) and its prefix, called unfollding, has been proposed [3], [4]. OCN's can represent both causality and concurrency between two nodes by net stryctyre. In this paper, we propose an efficient algorithm to derive a logic function by generating sub-state space of a given STG using the structural properties of OCN. The proposed algorithm can be seem as a parallel algorithm for deriving a logic function.

    This paper proposes a design technique for 3-D non-separable QMF banks with Face-Centered Cubic Sampling (FCCS) and Body-Centered Cubic Sampling (BCCS). In the proposed technique, 2-D McClellan transformation is applied to a suitably designed 2-D prototype QMF to obtain 3-D QMFs. The design examples given in this paper demonstrate advantages of the proposed method.

    In this paper, authors propose a linear array antenna using two bifilar helical antenna elements placed along the helix axis to reduce beam direction movement according to frequency change. The beam direction movement of this proposed array antenna is smaller than that of a conventional bifilar helical antenna. Also, the gain of this proposed array antenna is higher than that of the conventional helical antenna for a cross point angle of radiation patterns at the different transmit and receive(Tx and Rx) frequencies. The conventional helical antenna is suitable for vehicle antennas in mobile satellite communication systems such as the MSAT system because it owns circularly polarized omni-directional radiation pattern and its thin pole form. However, this antenna has a disadvantage that the beam direction in an elevation plane moves according to frequency change. In the proposed array antenna, the beam direction movement is about 9 smaller than that of the conventional bifilar helical antenna on condition that antenna total length is 4.83 λ0, antenna diameter is 0.12 λ0, and frequency change is from 0.957f0 to 1.043f0(f0 is center frequency and λ0 is free space wavelength at f0). Also, the Tx and Rx gains of this proposed array antenna at the cross point angle between Tx and Rx beams are about 2 dB higher than that of the conventional bifilar helical antenna on the same condition.

  • Performance Evaluation and Parameter Tuning of TCP over ABR Service in ATM Networks

    Rate-based congestion control is a promising scheme as data transfer service in ATM networks, and has been standardized in the ATM Forum. To migrate the existing upper layer protocols to ATM networks, however, further investigation is necessary. In particular, when ABR service class is applied to TCP (Transmission Control Protocol), duality of congestion control schemes in different protocol layers, i.e., conventional window-based congestion control in the Transport layer and ratebased congestion control in the ATM layer, may have a unexpected influence on performance. As an alternative approach for supporting TCP protocol, EPD (Early Packet Discard) has been recently proposed, which adds the function to the UBR (Unspecified Bit Rate) service. It does not have a "duality problem" since EPD only discards cells selectively to improve packet-level performance. In this paper, we exhibit performance of TCP protocol over ATM networks by using a simulation technique. We first compare rate-based control of ABR service and EPD applied to UBR service, and show that rate-control achieves better fairness and higher throughput in most circumstances. However, rate-based control requires careful tuning of control parameters to obtain its effectiveness and a duality problem leads to unexpected degradation of TCP-level performance. By the rate-based congestion control, temporal congestion at the switch is quickly relieved by the rate down of the source terminals. However, our simulation explores that if the parameter set of the rate-based congestion control is not appropriately used, the congestion is also recognized at TCP due to packet drops and TCP unnecessarily throttles its window size. To avoid this sort of the problem, we develop the appropriate parameter set suitable to TCP on ABR service, and point out that some modification of TCP may be necessary for further performance improvement.
