We have developed a V-band monolithic HEMT amplifier with single positive power supply. The amplifier used two types of RF grounds for coplanar waveguides (CPW) as transmission lines. One RF ground has a voltage of 0 V at DC, and the other RF ground has a voltage of more than 0 V at DC. A prototype of the monolithic amplifier was fabricated. The amplifier had a gain of 21.0 dB, a Rollett stability factor K of 2.35, an input VSWR of 1.82, and an output VSWR of 2.14 at 59.5 GHz.

A post-wall waveguide-fed parallel plate slotted array is an attractive candidate for high efficiency and mass producible planar array antennas for millimeter wave applications. For the slot design of this large sized array, a periodic boundary wall model based on the assumption of infinite array size and a parallel waveguide is used. In fact, the aperture is large but still finite (10-40 wavelength) and the TEM-like wave is perturbed due to the narrow walls at the periphery of the aperture as well as the slot coupling; antenna efficiency is affected by the size and the aspect ratio of the aperture. All these observations imply the unique defects of oversized waveguide arrays. In this paper, the aperture efficiency of post-wall waveguide arrays is assessed as a function of size and aspect ratio of the aperture for the first time, both in theory and measurement. An effective field analysis for an electrically large oversized waveguide array, developed by the author, is utilized for determining the slot excitation coefficients and aperture illumination. It is predicted that the oversized waveguide array has a potential efficiency of 80-90% if the aperture is larger than 18 wavelength on a side and the gain is more than 30 dBi. A transversely wide aperture generally provides higher efficiency than a longitudinally long aperture, provided a perfectly uniform TEM wave would be launched from the feed waveguide.

A novel resonator structure for the cut-off circular waveguide method is proposed to suppress the unwanted TE modes in the axial direction and TM modes in the radial direction. In this method, a dielectric plate sample is placed between two copper circular cylinders and clamped by two clips. The cylinder regions constitute the TE0m mode cut-off waveguides. The measurement principle is based on a rigorous analysis by the Ritz-Galerkin method. Many resonance modes observed in the measurement can be identified effectively by mode charts. In order to verify the validity of the novel structure for this method, the temperature dependences for three low-loss organic material plates were measured in the frequency range 40 to 50 GHz. It is found that modified polyolefin plates have comparable electric characteristics and low price, compared with PTFE plates. Moreover, it is verified that the novel resonator structure is effective in improvement of accuracy and stability in measurement. The measurement precisions are estimated within 1 percent for εr and within 15 percent for tan δ.

We have fabricated several two-dimensional photonic-crystal (2DPC) slab waveguides by using fine electron beam lithography and dry etching. The 2DPC waveguides include straight, bend, Y-branch, directional coupler, and coupled-cavity waveguides on the GaAs/AlGaAs substrate as an application to the ultra-small and ultra-fast all-optical switching device. Transmission spectra and near field patterns were characterized in a wide wavelength range from 850 to 1600 nm with the sample finished to the air-bridge type 2DPC slab. These waveguides appear to be suitable for achieving the waveguide platform in the symmetrical-Mach-Zehnder device.

Autocloning is a method for fabricating multi-dimensional structures by stacking the corrugated films while keeping the shape. Its productivity, robustness against perturbation, and flexibility regarding materials and lattice types make autocloning suitable for mass production of photonic crystals. Therefore we aim to industrialize autocloned photonic crystals. Recently, we are starting to market polarization beam splitters for optical telecommunication by using 2D photonic crystals, and are developing some devices using the splitters, such as isolators or beam combiners. The applications of the splitters are also extending to multi-section type of devices and to visible range devices. Meanwhile, development of optical integrated circuits by utilizing autocloned photonic crystals is in progress. Low loss propagation and some functions have been demonstrated.

The design, fabrication, and measurement of photonic-band-gap (PBG) waveguides and resonators in two-dimensional photonic crystal slabs have been investigated. Although photonic crystal slabs have only partial gaps, efficient waveguides and resonators can be realized by appropriate design. As regards PBG waveguides, we show various designs for efficient single-mode waveguides in PhC slabs with SiO2 cladding, we report group dispersion measurements of PBG waveguides in PhC slabs, and describe the successful fabrication of PBG waveguides with adiabatic connectors that enable us to couple the light from single-mode fibers efficiently to PBG waveguides. As regards PBG resonators, we show how to realize very high-Q and small volume resonators in hexagonal PhC slabs, and report the fabrication of resonant tunneling filters that consist of PBG resonators coupled with PBG waveguides. We also describe the successful fabrication of resonant tunneling mode-gap filters with adiabatic mode connectors.

A silicon (Si) wire waveguiding system fabricated on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) substrates is one of the most promising platforms for highly-integrated, ultra-small optical circuits, or microphotonics devices. The cross-section of the waveguide's core is about 300-nm-square, and the minimum bending radius are a few micrometers. Recently, crucial problems involving propagation losses and in coupling with external circuits have been resolved. Functional devices using silicon wire waveguides are now being tested. In this paper, we describe our recent progress and future prospects on the microphotonics devices based on the silicon-wire waveguiding system.

A mechanical phase shifter is designed for beam scanning in co-phase fed single-layer slotted waveguide arrays. The multiple-way power divider in this array consists of a series of π-junctions with one guide wavelength spacing in a feed waveguide. The movable narrow walls placed between the π-junctions perturb the guide wavelength as well as the phase of output ports. Method of Moment (MoM) analysis for one unit consisting of one movable plate and two junctions is conducted to estimate the available phase shift as well as the degradation of reflection. A phase shift of 86 degrees is predicted between two π-junctions under the condition of reflection below -20 dB; experiments at 4 GHz confirmed the design. The beam scanning capability of the arrays is also surveyed and the beam-scanning of about 10 degrees is predicted.

This letter proposes a millimeter-wave band transformer to connect a standard waveguide to a very thin post-wall waveguide. The post-wall waveguide height is the same as a microstrip or coplanar line. A dielectric substrate with slits etched on both edges is inserted in the standard waveguide for matching. A 22 GHz transformer gives 3.6% bandwidth for a 0.5 mm-height post-wall waveguide. The effects of various mechanical misalignments upon the frequency characteristics of the reflection are also estimated by analysis and measurements.

An NRD guide transmitter and a receiver were developed for a wireless multi-channel TV-signal distribution system at 60 GHz. The main emphasis was placed on a band-widening technique of the NRD guide beam-lead diode mount based on an electromagnetic field simulator, where each dimension of the beam lead diode mount was optimized. The agreement between the simulation and measurement is quite satisfactory. The up-converter fabricated by assembling a band-pass filter and a Schottky barrier diode mount has a good linearity as well as a flat output power of 2 dBm on the average over a bandwidth of at least 2 GHz. Moreover, the down-converter has a flat conversion loss performance of less than 7 dB in the same bandwidth. An NRD guide transmitter and a receiver characterized by small size and high performance were fabricated and successfully employed for the wireless distribution of TV signals for more than 100 channels.

A conventional waveguide filter is usually composed of a waveguide which is set with irises and posts inside. When dielectric material is not loaded inside the filter, the filter is too large to mount it on a planar circuit even if the frequency band is as high as the millimeter-wave band. In this paper, we propose a dielectric waveguide filter using LTCC (Low-Temperature Co-fired Ceramics) which can be mounted on a planar circuit. The dielectric waveguide filter using LTCC is composed of a dielectric-loaded waveguide including posts (via holes) and TEM-TE10 converters. The design method of the filter is shown and comparison of the simulated and the experimental results in the 6 GHz band is demonstrated. The simulated results agreed well with the experimental ones. To improve the attenuation characteristics, particularly at the above pass-band frequencies, an attenuation pole is added using a cross patch set inside the LTCC filter in the 25 GHz band. The effect of the cross patch is confirmed using the same simulation method as used for the 6 GHz band. As a result, it is confirmed that the cross patch is very useful for improving the attenuation characteristics at the above pass-band frequencies.

A novel hybrid numerical method, which is based on the extended spectral domain approach combined with the mode-matching method, is applied to evaluate the scattering parameter of waveguide discontinuities. The formulation procedure utilizes the biorthogonal relation in the transformation, and the Green's functions in the spectral domain are obtained easily even in the inhomogeneous lossy regions. The present method does not include the approximate perturbational scheme, and it can evaluate accurately and stably the scattering parameters of either for the thin or thick obstacles made of the wide variety of materials, the lossless dielectrics to highly conductive media, in short computation time. The physical phenomena of transmission through the lossy obstacles are investigated by numerical computations. The results are compared with FEM where FEM computations are feasible, although the FEM computations cannot cover the whole performances of the present method. The good agreement is observed in the corresponding range. The matrix size in this method is smaller than that of other methods. Therefore, the present method is numerically efficient and it would be able to apply for the integrated evaluation of a successive discontinuity. The resonant characteristics of rectangular waveguide cavity are analyzed accurately taking the conductor losses into consideration.

We show examples of accurate computer-aided design of power coupling between two dielectric slab waveguides of finite length by using the boundary-element method (BEM) based on guided-mode extracted integral equations (GMEIE's). The integral equations derived in this paper can be solved by the conventional BEM. Various properties in numerical calculations of GMEIE's are examined. The reflection and coupling coefficients of the guided wave as well as the scattering power are calculated numerically for the case of incidence TM guided-mode. The presented results are checked by the energy conservation law and reciprocity theorem. The results show that it is possible to design an optimum coupling between two dielectric slab waveguides by using the BEM based on GMEIE's.

Field-theoretical equivalent circuit models of a variety of coplanar waveguide (CPW) lumped-element discontinuities for two dominant modes are characterized by executing the short-open calibration (SOC) procedure in the fullwave method of moments (MoM). In our developed MoM platform, the impressed current sources with even or odd symmetry are introduced at the selected ports in order to separately excite the even and odd dominant modes, i.e., CPW- and CSL-mode. After the port network parameters are numerically derived using the Galerkin's technique, the two SOC standards are defined and evaluated in the self-consistent MoM to effectively de-embed and extract the core model parameters of a CPW circuit or discontinuity. After the validation is confirmed via comparison with the published data, extensive investigation is carried out to for the first time demonstrate the distinctive model properties of one-port CPW short- and open-end elements as well as two-port inductive and capacitive coupling elements with resorting to its two different dominant modes.

Making up an electromagnetic wave simulator based on the FEM is tried, which may run on some widely used platforms by use of Java and a single commercial tool. Since the codes and configuration files to be created for this simulator are common, one can construct the simulator running on the platforms at the same time. Using this simulator, the transmission properties of two- and three-dimensional waveguide discontinuities in optical and microwave waveguides are analyzed, the inverse problem in material constant measurement is solved, and the computed results are presented including plots of the electric field distribution.

The growth in the volume of Internet traffic and the increasing variety of Internet applications require Internet backbone networks to be scalable and provided sophisticated quality of service (QoS) capabilities. Internet backbone routers have evolved to achieve sub-Tbps switching capacity in a single unit, but their switch architectures have limited scalability, causing QoS to degrade as the switches get bigger. Hence, we propose a large-scale IP and lambda integrated router architecture with scalable switches. We first describe the system architecture of our proposed backbone router and clarify the requirements for its switching capabilities to meet near-future demands. The new switch architecture, using crossbar-based switching fabrics and optical interconnection devices, meets the requirements for a backbone router to scale up to 82 Tbps and enable light path switching as well as packet switching. The routing tag and its usage algorithm in the switch, and packaging issues, including the quantity of hardware required for expansion, are also discussed.

A compact high-temperature superconducting (HTS) bandpass filter (BPF) using coplanar waveguide (CPW) meander-line parallel-circuited resonators is proposed for microwave receiver applications. The design theory is presented based on a conventional filter theory with J-inverters. Also, analytical and numerical studies of the meander-line resonator are carried out in terms of equivalent circuit values, the resonant frequency, and the unloaded Q. Two- and four-stage 0.05 dB ripple Chebyshev BPFs at 2 GHz with relative bandwidth 60 MHz are fabricated with the metalorganic deposition (MOD)-derived YBCO films on LaAlO3 substrates and their performance are demonstrated. The measured frequency characteristics and the unloaded quality factors agree well with the theoretical and numerical results and the validity of the design theory is confirmed.

A technique for the design of circular- and racetrack-shaped NRD guide ring resonators was developed based on the mode coupling theory. Besides the operating mode, a parasitic mode is generated at curved sections of the resonator as a result of the mode conversion. Resonance of the NRD guide ring resonator is derived by characteristic equations of the coupled modes and then employed in making the design diagrams, which are useful for determining the dimensions of the ring resonators. It is shown that the discrepancy between the experimental results and previous theory can be resolved by using the present theory. Low loss, small-sized ring resonators with curvature radii of less than 5.3 mm were fabricated at 60 GHz and a band rejection performance of more than 30 dB was observed. Moreover, a procedure for the design of the channel dropping filter was developed and a 2-pole filter, which has great advantages such as a low insertion loss of 1.2 dB and a compact size smaller than that of a golf ball, was successfully developed by using two racetrack-shaped ring resonators.
