  • A Study on Evaluation Method for Beam Profile of Phased Array by Using Two-Dimensional Measurement Equipment Open Access

    Recently, “Both-Side Retrodirective System” was proposed, as a beam convergence technique, for microwave high power transmission. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the both-side retrodirective system by experiment, the authors propose a 2-dimensional measurement equipment. Propagation in the parallel plate waveguide was analogized based on free-space propagation, and the theory and characteristics were clarified by simulation. The electric field distribution in the waveguide was measured by electric probe with the proposed equipment. Two types of measurement equipment were developed. One is a 4-element experiment system, which is a small-scale device for principle verification. The other is a 16-element measurement equipment, which is intended to evaluate beam convergence of a both-side retrodirective system in the next step. The measured results were compared with simulation results. As a result, it was confirmed that the beam formed in the waveguide was successfully measured. Thus, the effectiveness of 2-dimensional measurement equipment for evaluation of beam convergence was shown.

    In this paper, we explore how to enhance the physical layer security performance in downlink cellular networks through cooperative jamming technology. Idle user equipments (UE) are used to cooperatively transmit jamming signal to confuse eavesdroppers (Eve). We propose a threshold-based jammer selection scheme to decide which idle UE should participate in the transmission of jamming signal. Threshold conditions are carefully designed to decrease interference to legitimate channel, while maintain the interference to the Eves. Moreover, fewer UE are activated, which is helpful for saving energy consumptions of cooperative UEs. Analytical expressions of the connection and secrecy performances are derived, which are validated through Monte Carlo simulations. Theoretical and simulation results reveal that our proposed scheme can improve connection performance, while approaches the secrecy performance of [12]. Furthermore, only 43% idle UEs of [12] are used for cooperative jamming, which helps to decrease energy consumption of network.

    This paper presents a simple method for comparing the impedance of an artificial mains network (AMN) with the International Special Committee on Radio Interference (CISPR) 16-1-2 standard. The circuit of a vector network analyzer, which is an impedance measurement instrument, is not ideal, and the measured impedances include measurement uncertainties. However, complete uncertainty analysis is not required in the proposed method. By comparing the relative relationship between the measured impedance of an AMN under test and the measured impedance of the original transfer standards whose impedance is modeled by the regulated impedance in the CISPR 16-1-2 standard, conformity to the standard can be determined. The magnitude and phase of the impedance of an AMN can be independently analyzed. To demonstrate the method, we apply it to a commercially available AMN. The comparison result is found to be equivalent to the result based on a complete uncertainty analysis, which confirms that the proposed comparison method is feasible.

    Communications satellites have been the primary mission from the early period of Japanese space development and their on-board communication equipment are the core devices to realize satellite communications systems. The technologies for this equipment have been developed to meet the requirements of high capacity and high functionality under the severe satellite-imposed constraints. This paper summarizes progress in on-board communication equipment technologies developed and verified by using Engineering Test Satellites and commercial satellites in Japan and describes their prospects.

    This paper proposes a power supply voltage control technique, and demonstrates its effectiveness for eliminating the overkills and underkills due to the power supply characteristic difference between an automatic test equipment (ATE) and a practical operating environment of the DUT. The proposed method controls the static power supply voltage on the ATE system, so that the ATE can eliminate misjudges for the Pass or Fail of the DUT. The method for calculating the power supply voltage is also described. Experimental results show that the proposed method can eliminate 89% of overkills and underkills in delay fault testing with 105 real silicon devices. Limitations of the proposed method are also discussed.

    This paper presents a novel data compression method for testing integrated circuits within the selective dictionary coding framework. Due to the inverse value of dictionary indices made use of for the compatibility analysis with the heuristic algorithm utilized to solve the maximum clique problem, the method can obtain a higher compression ratio than existing ones.

    This paper presents a novel data compression method for testing integrated circuits within the framework of pattern run-length coding. The test set is firstly divided into 2n-length patterns where n is a natural number. Then the compatibility of each pattern, which can be an external type, or an internal type, is analyzed. At last, the codeword of each pattern is generated according to its analysis result. Experimental results for large ISCAS89 benchmarks show that the proposed method can obtain a higher compression ratio than existing ones.

    In LTE-Advanced heterogeneous networks, a typical cell layout to enhance frequency utilization is to incorporate picocells and femtocells in a macrocell. However, the co-channel interference between the marcocell and picocell/femtocell is an important issue when the same frequency band is used between these systems. We have already clarified how the interference from the femto(macro) cell affects on the macro(femto) cell. In this paper, we evaluate the interference rejection characteristics by an adaptive array with user equipment (UE). The characteristics are evaluated based on the K-factor used in the Nakagami-Race Fading model and the spatial correlation that is obtained in an actual outdoor environment. It is shown that a two-element adaptive array at the macro UE (M-UE) can sufficiently reduce the interference from the femto base station (F-BS) to the M-UE even if the number of total signals exceeds the degrees of freedom of the array.

    In NGN standards, End Host, also referred to as Terminal Equipment (TE), holds an important place in end-to-end path performance. However, most researchers neglect TE performance when considering performance of end-to-end paths. As far as the authors' knowledge goes, no previous study has proposed a model for TE performance. This paper proposes a method for measuring performance of TE and model extraction based on measurement data. The measurement was made possible with the use of a special NPU (Network Processing Unit) implemented as a programmable NIC. Along with the probing itself, a framework for removing the skew between the NPU and OS is developed in this paper. The multidimensional analysis includes method of probing, packet size and background traffic volume, and studies their effect on TE performance. A method for extracting a generic TE model is proposed. The outcome of this research can be used for modelling TE in simulations and in modelling end-to-end performance when considering QoS in NGN.

    Owing to the concerns about electromagnetic interference (EMI) from wireless local area networks (WLAN), an investigation into its impact on medical equipment is carried out. The results indicate that there is no evidence of 802.11 Wireless LAN systems being unsafe for installation inside hospital premises and only one piece of equipment was found to be susceptible to IEEE 802.11b standard.

  • An Algorithm to Evaluate Imbalances of Quadrature Mixers

    It is essential, as bandwidths of wireless communications get wider, to evaluate the imbalances among quadrature mixer ports, in terms of carrier phase offset, IQ gain imbalance, and IQ skew. Because it is time consuming to separate skew, gain imbalance and carrier phase offset evaluation during test is often performed using a composite value, without separation of the imbalance factors. This paper describes an algorithm for enabling separation among quadrature mixer gain imbalance, carrier phase offset, and skew. Since the test time is reduced by the proposed method, it can be applied during high volume production testing.

    One method for achieving high-speed waveform digitizing uses time-interleaved A-D Converters (ADCs). It is known that, in this method, using multiple ADCs enables sampling at a rate higher than the sampling rate of the ADC being used. Degradation of the dynamic range, however, results from such factors as phase error in the sampling clock applied to the ADC, and mismatched frequency characteristics among the individual ADCs. This paper describes a method for correcting these mismatches using a digital signal processing (DSP) technique for automatic test equipment applications. This method can be applied to any number of interleaved ADCs, and it does not require any additional hardware; good correction and improved accuracy can be obtained simply by adding a little to the computing overhead.

    In this research, the performance degradation of the digital electronic equipment under electromagnetic (EM) disturbance was studied in order to investigate the interference of intra-equipment. To develop the evaluation method of the performance degradation, some communication indexes were measured under EM disturbance. From some experimental results, it is known that the performance degradation of the electronic equipment was estimated by the degradation of "through-put," one of the communication performance indexes. For further investigation of the interference of intra-equipment, the near EM field from a PCB of the electronic equipment and its performance degradation under EM disturbance were measured and compared. From the measured results, the relationship between near field measurement and performance degradation could be obtained in some extent. These facts enable us that the weak area under the EM disturbance application on PCB can be foreseen by measuring the near field emission from the equipment and vise versa.

    The optical network represents a promising approach to achieve a scalable backbone network. In backbone networks, survivability is important because high volumes of traffic are prone to be damaged by faulty equipment. Various design methods for survivable optical networks have been proposed, although none considering the simultaneous maintenance of multiple transmission lines has been proposed to our knowledge. This paper proposes a design method for survivable optical networks where multiple transmission lines sharing common transmission equipment may suffer simultaneous damage, due to failure in the transmission equipment. Moreover, two transmission lines can be maintained simultaneously. A mathematical programming model to obtain the optimum lightpath arrangement is presented assuming three kinds of lightpath recovery schemes. The relation between the required transmission line capacity and the combination pattern of two transmission lines that undergo maintenance is clarified using the proposed design method.

    In this manuscript, a layered macro/micro diversity scheme is introduced at the receiver side of a MIMO STBC wireless control system under fading and shadowing environment. The combination of the outputs of micro diversity is based on soft-decision values, while the macro diversity branches are combined based on hard decision values. As a measure of the reliability of the system, the outage probability of frame-error rate is employed. The performance of the proposed system is analytically and numerically evaluated and the impact of the macro diversity in the outage probability is clarified.

    Lightning surges induced on subscriber lines in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, which is located in a tropical region, were observed at telecommunication centers. More than 100 surges per line were observed during a three-month period. Peak values, observed using a lightning surge counter, show that lightning surge current occurrences normalized by the number of thunderstorm days and number of subscriber lines closely agreed with data observed in temperate areas, e.g., Japan. Surge waveforms appearing at several points ranging from underground cable ducts to exchange equipment were observed using a wave memory system. The results show that lightning surge currents on the cables were larger than those on a wire, but the correlation between them was weak. Common and differential mode surge waveforms observed using the wave memory system were almost the same. These results will be useful in designing protection circuits for equipment used in tropical areas.

  • A Log-Normal Distribution Model for Electron Multiplying Detector Signals in Charged Particle Beam Equipments

    We propose a stochastic model for signals generated through the electron multiplying effect of detectors in charged particle beam equipments. This model is based on a stochastic variable characterized by a log-normal type distribution. The model is simple and can be used to represent a wide dynamic range of signals from pulse-like signals when the primary beam current is small to continuous signals when the primary beam current is large. For the model base reference a normalization of actual signal detectors is presented. This base reference yields the unique stochastic parameter used in our model. The proposed model better approximates the actual signals in the power spectrum distribution as compared to the filtered Poisson method presented elsewhere.

    Test compression/decompression is an efficient method for reducing the test application cost. In this paper we propose a test generation method for obtaining test-patterns suitable to test compression by statistical coding. In general, an ATPG generates a test-pattern that includes don't-care values. In our method, such don't-care values are specified based on an estimation of the final probability of 0/1 occurrence in the resultant test set. Experimental results show that our method can generate test patterns that are able to be highly compressed by statistical coding, in small computational time.

    Mass measurement system for the measurement of mass of substances placed in randomly vibrating circumstances has been developed. Mass measurement range was defined from 0 g to 400 g for the primary model with the measurement error of approximately 3% when randomly directional vibration of 6 m/sec2 acceleration was applied to the system.

    A "dual-ring" network configuration is proposed in wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) metropolitan area network (MAN). In the proposed architecture, a "sub-ring" using two fibers is added to the existing metropolitan WDM ring for flexible and cost effective addition of new nodes.
