  • On Delay Estimation Error for CDMA in Fast Fading Channels

    Space-time array manifold model is usually used in a fast fading channel to estimate delay for the radio location. The existing additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) estimation error model significantly overestimates the delay estimation. In this paper, we model the estimation error of the space-time array manifold channel impulse response (CIR) matrix as a correlated AWGN matrix and its performance is shown to be closer to the estimation error of practical systems than the existing model.

    In this letter, we propose a novel approach for use in the analytical modeling of the overall performance of a Hybrid ARQ (type I and II) together with arbitrary channel model, based on Hidden Markov Model (HMM). Using the combined HMM model developed for involved ARQ protocols with the finite state channel model, such critical performance measure as throughput and delay can be derived in closed form. Analytical results are derived for Stop-and-Wait as well as Go-back-N type together with the type I and type II Hybrid ARQ scheme adopted. We compare the analytical results along with the simulation results in order to check the correctness our model, and show the efficiency of our approach by applying it to realistic environments such as the CDMA IS-95 system with its derived equations.

    Fast and simple algorithm of a parity checker for a large residue numbers is presented. A new set of RNS moduli with 2r-(2l1) form for fast modular multiplication is proposed. The proposed RNS moduli has a large dynamic range for a large RNS number. The parity of a residue number can be checked by the Chinese remainder theorem (CRT). A CRT-based parity checker is simply organized by the Montgomery reduction method (MRM), implemented by using multipliers and the carry-save adder array. We present a fast parity checker with minimal hardware processed in three clock cycles for 32-bit RNS modulus set.

    For a CDMA system with a single carrier, we consider a call control policy at each cell, which gives priority to handoff calls over new calls while meeting the overall call quality. New calls are first under the call control of the threshold type, and then receive services together with the handoff calls but under the outage restriction guaranteeing a pre-specified call quality. An optimization model with such quality-guaranteeing constraints is formulated, which is to determine the threshold value for each cell, minimizing the new call blocking probability. We propose a solution heuristic, with which a number of simulations are conducted under a variety of traffic environments. The computational experiments evaluate the usefulness of our call control scheme in that handoff calls are given an appropriate level of priority while the system capacity is effectively utilized.

    A new simple recovery scheme for transient bit errors in the RAM of a ROM-based embedded system is presented, which exploits the information stored in the ROM. And a new scrubbing technique suitable to the proposed recovery scheme is also presented. With the proposed recovery scheme and scrubbing technique, the reliability of the RAM against transient bit errors can be improved remarkably with no additional extra memory and scrubbing overhead.

    This paper presents two novel blind set-theoretic adaptive filtering algorithms for suppressing "Multiple Access Interference (MAI)," which is one of the central burdens in DS/CDMA systems. We naturally formulate the problem of MAI suppression as an asymptotic minimization of a sequence of cost functions under some linear constraint defined by the desired user's signature. The proposed algorithms embed the constraint into the direction of update, and thus the adaptive filter moves toward the optimal filter without stepping away from the constraint set. In addition, using parallel processors, the proposed algorithms attain excellent performance with linear computational complexity. Geometric interpretation clarifies an advantage of the proposed methods over existing methods. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithms achieve (i) much higher speed of convergence with rather better bit error rate performance than other blind methods and (ii) much higher speed of convergence than the non-blind NLMS algorithm (indeed, the speed of convergence of the proposed algorithms is comparable to the non-blind RLS algorithm).

    The exact calculation of the ergodic and outage capacity for Rayleigh fading single-input multiple-output (SIMO) channels in the presence of unequal-power Rayleigh fading interferers is mathematically quite challenging due to the complicated distribution of the capacity. In this paper, a SIMO system with M receive antennas and N interferers is considered. Based on some statistical results, the closed-form upper and lower bound for the ergodic and outage capacity are derived respectively. These bounds are shown to be simple to compute and appear to be quite tight.

  • Stabilized MAX-MIN Flow Control Using PID and PII2 Controllers

    This paper describes an analytical framework for the weighted max-min flow control of elastic flows in packet networks using PID and PII2 controller when flows experience heterogeneous round-trip delays. Our algorithms are scalable in that routers do not need to store any per-flow information of each flow and they use simple first come first serve (FCFS) discipline, stable in that the stability is proven rigorously when there are flows with heterogeneous round-trip delays. We first suggest two closed-loop system models that approximate our flow control algorithms in continuous-time domain where the purpose of the first algorithm is to achieve the target queue length and that of the second is to achieve the target utilization. The slow convergence [1] of many rate-based flow control algorithms, which use queue lengths as input signals, can be resolved by the second algorithm. Based on these models, we find the conditions for controller gains that stabilize closed-loop systems when round-trip delays are equal and extend this result to the case of heterogeneous round-trip delays with the help of Zero exclusion theorem. We simulate our algorithms with optimal gain sets for various configurations including a multiple bottleneck network to verify the usefulness and extensibility of our algorithms.

    2.4 GHz-band wireless LAN system based on a new standard, IEEE 802.11g, has been taking a great attention as it provides the attractive features such as low cost, unlicensed spectrum use, and high speed transmission rate up to 54 Mbps. However, 2.4 GHz radio frequency band is also used for Industrial, Scientific and Medical (ISM) devices such as microwave ovens, and the man-made noise leaked from ISM devices is known to be one of the major causes of the degradation in the performance of wireless communications systems using 2.4 GHz radio frequency band. In this paper, we evaluate the bit error rate (BER) and the throughput performances of WLAN system based on IEEE 802.11g standard (IEEE 802.11g WLAN system) under man-made noise environment, and discuss the effect of man-made noise on the performance of IEEE 802.11g WLAN system. Numerical results show that the BER and the throughput performances of IEEE 802.11g WLAN system are much degraded by the influence of man-made noise.

    An Insertion-Deletion system, first introduced in [1], is a theoretical computing model in the DNA computing framework based on insertion and deletion operations. When insertion and deletion operations work together, as expected, they are very powerful. In fact, it has been shown that even the very restricted Insertion-Deletion systems can characterize the class of recursively enumerable languages [1]-[4]. In this paper, we investigate the computational power of Insertion-Deletion systems and show that they preserve the computational universality without using contexts.

    In this letter, we analyze a solution for multiple access technique based on OFDM-CDMA with pilot tone. The proposed system is designed to provide higher data rates in multimedia wireless communications. Primarily, it is achieved by introducing a serial to parallel converter with a pilot tone implemented in each of its output branches. The bit error rates (BER) performance of the proposed scheme are evaluated using computer simulations. The results show that the presented OFDM-CDMA system provides high data rates and low BER and, for the same bandwidth, it performs better than its competitive solution.

    This paper describes a design of Ogg Vorbis decoder for embedded platform. Since Ogg Vorbis decoding process incurs high computational complexity, a trivial software-based implementation requires high operation frequency. Thus in our design specific hardware modules are devised for functional blocks, which have higher computational complexity than other blocks in Ogg Vorbis decoding process. Based on computational cost analysis of whole decoding process, IMDCT (Inverse Modified Discrete Cosine Transform) and residue decoding process are detected as the computation-intensive functional blocks. As a result of hardware implementation, 73% improvement in CPU load is achieved by specific hardware modules for IMDCT and residue decoding process.

    This paper describes an on-line handwritten Japanese text recognition system that is liberated from constraints on line direction and character orientation. The recognition system first separates freely written text into text line elements, second estimates the line direction and character orientation using the time sequence information of pen-tip coordinates, third hypothetically segment it into characters using geometric features and apply character recognition. The final step is to select the most plausible interpretation by evaluating the likelihood composed of character segmentation, character recognition, character pattern structure and context. The method can cope with a mixture of vertical, horizontal and skewed text lines with arbitrary character orientations. It is expected useful for tablet PC's, interactive electronic whiteboards and so on.

    Although the Digital Rights Management (DRM) systems have been rapidly developed to protect copyrights, they have not considered user privacy because they regard this as an unnecessary element in achieving their goals. However, the protection of user privacy becomes one of the most important issues in DRM systems as the number of people who suffer from accidents caused by the infringement of individual information dramatically increases. This paper suggests a license management protocol which is a more powerful protocol to protect individual information in DRM. To protect the exposure of information of user identification, the proposed protocol uses alias like a TID and a token instead of the identity of content users. Due to using alias, this protocol can guarantee the anonymity of content users. Also, it can prevent the leakage of individual information through encryption of usage information. In this way, it can protect the privacy of content users.

    This paper proposes a reconfigurable adaptive FEC system based on Reed-Solomon (RS) code with interleaving. In adaptive FEC schemes, error correction capability t is changed dynamically according to the communication channel condition. For given error correction capability t, we can implement an optimal RS decoder composed of minimum hardware units for each t. If the hardware units of the RS decoder can be reduced for any given error correction capability t, we can embed as large deinterleaver as possible into the RS decoder for each t. Reconfiguring the RS decoder embedded with the expanded deinterleaver dynamically for each error correction capability t allows us to decode larger interleaved codes which are more robust error correction codes to burst errors. In a reliable transport protocol, experimental results show that our system achieves up to 65% lower packet error rate and 5.9% higher data transmission throughput compared to the adaptive FEC scheme on a conventional fixed hardware system. In an unreliable transport protocol, our system achieves up to 76% better bit error performance with higher code rate compared to the adaptive FEC scheme on a conventional fixed hardware system.

    This paper proposes a novel boundary scan test scheme for intellectual property (IP) core identification via watermarking. The core concept is embedding a watermark identification circuit (WIC) and a test circuit into the IP core at the behavior design level. The procedure depends on current IP-based design flow. This scheme can detect the identification of the IP provider without the need to examine the microphotograph after the chip has been manufactured and packaged. This scheme can successfully survive synthesis, placement, and routing and identify the IP core at various design levels. Experimental results have demonstrated that the proposed approach has the potential to solve the IP identification problem.

    The roadside network system for ITS services uses microcells in its access infrastructure. For the roadside network that provides the uninterrupted communication using microcells such as DSRC, an effective communication control scheme must be established so as to manage the communication passes to vehicles in the network. One of the fundamental requirements for the communication control scheme for the roadside network is to assure fault-tolerance, which means in this system that the communication control mechanism needs to be managed even in part of the base stations in the network might be in fault. On the other hand, for the communication control in the roadside network using microcells, issues to be solved are the handover mechanism for taking over connection information to provide uninterrupted communication environment, which causes the degradation of the end-to-end throughput. In order to solve those problems, the authors developed a communication control scheme. We implemented the scheme as the specific 'ADS algorism' to control the communication zone dynamically, which works effectively on the Autonomous Decentralized System (ADS) communication platform. Furthermore, we also developed the specific ADS algorism to assure fault-tolerance for the communication zone control, which can reconfigure the communication zone in case the BSs in the roadside network are in fault and can keep the operations by the reconfigured communication zone. We evaluated the ADS algorism for the communication zone control by computer simulation. The results show the effectiveness of the ADS algorism for the dynamic communication zone control mechanism and for the fault-tolerant mechanism for communication zone reconfiguration on fault.

    For multiple-channel active noise control (ANC) systems, distributed systems consisting of more than one controller are useful. In this paper, we propose a performance improvement algorithm for the distributed multiple-channel ANC system based on the simultaneous equations method. In the proposed algorithm, no estimation of error paths is required. This algorithm can provide good performance in canceling primary noises with auto-/cross-correlations and achieve stable noise reduction under a change of the error paths.
