Recently, the opportunity to discuss topics on a variety of online discussion bulletin boards has been increasing. However, it can be difficult to understand the contents of each discussion as the number of posts increases. Therefore, it is important to generate headlines that can automatically summarize each post in order to understand the contents of each discussion at a glance. In this paper, we propose a method to extract and generate post headlines for online discussion bulletin boards, automatically. We propose templates with multiple patterns to extract important sentences from the posts. In addition, we propose a method to generate headlines by matching the templates with the patterns. Then, we evaluate the effectiveness of our proposed method using questionnaires.

This paper proposes the mesh-topology based wireless-powered communication network (MT-WPCN), which consists of a hybrid-access point (H-AP) and nodes. The H-AP broadcasts energy to all nodes by wireless, and the nodes harvest the energy and then communicate with other nodes including the H-AP. For the communication in the MT-WPCN, we propose the harvest-then-transceive protocol to ensure that the nodes can harvest energy from the H-AP and transmit information selectively to the H-AP or other nodes, which is not supported in most protocols proposed for the conventional WPCN. In the proposed protocol, we consider that the energy harvesting can be interrupted at nodes, since the nodes cannot harvest energy during transmission or reception. We also consider that the harvested energy is consumed by the reception of information from other nodes. In addition, the energy reservation model is required to guarantee the QoS, which reserves the infimum energy to receive information reliably by the transmission power control. Under these considerations, first, we design the half harvest-then-transceive protocol, which indicates that a node transmits information only to other nodes which do not transmit information yet, for investing the effect of the energy harvesting interruption. Secondly, we also design the full harvest-then-transceive protocol for the information exchange among nodes and compatibility with the conventional star-topology based WPCN, which indicates that a node can transmit information to any network unit, i.e., the H-AP and all nodes. We study the sum-throughput maximization in the MT-WPCN based on the half and full harvest-then-transceive protocols, respectively. Furthermore, the amount of harvested energy is analytically compared according to the energy harvesting interruption in the protocols. Simulation results show that the proposed MT-WPCN outperforms the conventional star-topology based WPCN in terms of the sum-throughput maximization, when wireless information transmission among nodes occurs frequently.

Online chat systems, e.g.., Twitter and Slack, have been used in academic conferences or study meetings as a means of instant discussion and sharing related information alongside a real presentation. We propose a system for activating online discussion by providing a bot that suggests webpages related to current timeline of the discussion. Our system generates keyword vectors according to discussion timeline, searches best related webpages from several web sites, and timely provides these pages to the discussion timeline. This paper describes deployments of our system in two types of meetings: lightning talk format meetings and group meetings; and daily exchanges using online chat system. As a result, we could not find good enough reactions to the bot's postings from meeting participants at the lightning talk format meetings, but we could observe more reactions and progress of discussion caused by the bot's postings at the relaxed meetings and daily exchanges among group members.

We develop a technique for representing variable names and name binding which is a mechanism of associating a name with an entity in many formal systems including logic, programming languages and mathematics. The idea is to use a general form of graph links (or edges) called hyperlinks to represent variables, graph nodes as constructors of the formal systems, and a graph type called hlground to define substitutions. Our technique is based on simple notions of graph theory in which graph types ensure correct substitutions and keep bound variables distinct. We encode strong reduction of the untyped λ-calculus to introduce our technique. Then we encode a more complex formal system called System F<:, a polymorphic λ-calculus with subtyping that has been one of important theoretical foundations of functional programming languages. The advantage of our technique is that the representation of terms, definition of substitutions, and implementation of formal systems are all straightforward. We formalized the graph type hlground, proved that it ensures correct substitutions in the λ-calculus, and implemented hlground in HyperLMNtal, a modeling language based on hypergraph rewriting. Experiments were conducted to test this technique. By this technique, one can implement formal systems simply by following the steps of their definitions as described in papers.

Mobile cloud computing (MCC) has been proposed as a new approach to enhance mobile device performance via computation offloading. The growth in cloud computing energy consumption is placing pressure on both the environment and cloud operators. In this paper, we focus on energy-efficient resource management in MCC and aim to reduce cloud operators' energy consumption through resource management. We establish a deterministic resource management model by solving a combinatorial optimization problem with constraints. To obtain the resource management strategy in deterministic scenarios, we propose a deterministic strategy algorithm based on the adaptive group genetic algorithm (AGGA). Wireless networks are used to connect to the cloud in MCC, which causes uncertainty in resource management in MCC. Based on the deterministic model, we establish a stochastic model that involves a stochastic optimization problem with chance constraints. To solve this problem, we propose a stochastic strategy algorithm based on Monte Carlo simulation and AGGA. Experiments show that our deterministic strategy algorithm obtains approximate optimal solutions with low algorithmic complexity with respect to the problem size, and our stochastic strategy algorithm saves more energy than other algorithms while satisfying the chance constraints.

Many life-log analysis applications, which transfer data from cameras and sensors to a Cloud and analyze them in the Cloud, have been developed as the use of various sensors and Cloud computing technologies has spread. However, difficulties arise because of the limited network bandwidth between such sensors and the Cloud. In addition, sending raw sensor data to a Cloud may introduce privacy issues. Therefore, we propose a pipelined method for distributed deep learning processing between sensors and the Cloud to reduce the amount of data sent to the Cloud and protect the privacy of users. In this study, we measured the processing times and evaluated the performance of our method using two different datasets. In addition, we performed experiments using three types of machines with different performance characteristics on the client side and compared the processing times. The experimental results show that the accuracy of deep learning with coarse-grained data is comparable to that achieved with the default parameter settings, and the proposed distributed processing method has performance advantages in cases of insufficient network bandwidth between realistic sensors and a Cloud environment. In addition, it is confirmed that the process that most affects the overall processing time varies depending on the machine performance on the client side, and the most efficient distribution method similarly differs.

This paper demonstrates a quick start method for Pulse-Width Controlled PLL (PWPLL). Our PLL converts the internal state into digital signals and stores them into a memory before getting into a sleep mode. The wakeup sequence reads the memory and presets the internal state so that our PLL can start the operation with close to the previously locked condition. Since the internal state includes not only the frequency control code but also the phase information, our quick start PLL locks in several clock cycles. A prototype chip fabricated in 0.18µm standard CMOS shows 50ns settling time (4 reference clock cycles), 18.5mW power consumption under 1.8V nominal supply voltage with 105µm×870µm silicon area.

This paper presents an algorithm for a physical activity (PA) classification and metabolic equivalents (METs) monitoring and its System-on-a-Chip (SoC) implementation to realize both power reduction and high estimation accuracy. Long-term PA monitoring is an effective means of preventing lifestyle-related diseases. Low power consumption and long battery life are key features supporting the wider dissemination of the monitoring system. As described herein, an adaptive sampling method is implemented for longer battery life by minimizing the active rate of acceleration without decreasing accuracy. Furthermore, advanced PA classification using both the heart rate and acceleration is introduced. The proposed algorithms are evaluated by experimentation with eight subjects in actual conditions. Evaluation results show that the root mean square error with respect to the result of processing with fixed sampling rate is less than 0.22[METs], and the mean absolute error is less than 0.06[METs]. Furthermore, to minimize the system-level power dissipation, a dedicated SoC is implemented using 130-nm CMOS process with FeRAM. A non-volatile CPU using non-volatile memory and a flip-flop is used to reduce the stand-by power. The proposed algorithm, which is implemented using dedicated hardware, reduces the active rate of the CPU and accelerometer. The current consumption of the SoC is less than 3-µA. And the evaluation system using the test chip achieves 74% system-level power reduction. The total current consumption including that of the accelerometer is 11.3-µA on average.

To prepare antireflection coating (ARC) by wet process is important technology for low cost fabrication of solar cells. In this research, we consider the optical reflectance of a three layer stack structure of ARC films on the pyramidally textured single-crystalline silicon substrates. Each layer of the ARC films is deposited by a spin-coating method. The triple layers consist of SiO2, SiO2-TiO2 mixture, and TiO2 films from air to the silicon substrate in that order, and the refractive index is slightly increased from air to the substrate. Light reflection can be reduced further mainly due to graded index effect. The optimized three layer structure ARC shows that the reflectance is below 0.048 at the wavelength of 600 nm.

In recent years, the number of requests to transfer large files via large high-speed computer networks has been increasing rapidly. Typically, these requests are handled in the “best effort” manner which results in unpredictable completion times. In this paper, we consider a model where a transfer request either must be completed by a user-specified deadline or must be rejected if its deadline cannot be satisfied. We propose a bandwidth scheduling method and a routing method for reducing the call-blocking probability in a bandwidth-guaranteed network. Finally, we show their excellent performance by simulation experiments.

In this paper we propose the Zone-based Energy Aware data coLlection (ZEAL) protocol. ZEAL is designed to be used in agricultural applications for wireless sensor networks. In these type of applications, all data is often routed to a single point (named “sink” in sensor networks). The overuse of the same routes quickly depletes the energy of the nodes closer to the sink. In order to minimize this problem, ZEAL automatically creates zones (groups of nodes) independent from each other based on the trajectory of one or more mobile sinks. In this approach the sinks collects data queued in sub-sinks in each zone. Unlike existing protocols, ZEAL accomplish its routing tasks without using GPS modules for location awareness or synchronization mechanisms. Additionally, ZEAL provides an energy saving mechanism on the network layer that puts zones to sleep when there are no mobile sinks nearby. To evaluate ZEAL, it is compared with the Maximum Amount Shortest Path (MASP) protocol. Our simulations using the ns-3 network simulator show that ZEAL is able to collect a larger number of packets with significantly less energy in the same amount of time.

This letter presents a novel tensor voting mechanism — analytic tensor voting (ATV), to get rid of the difficulties in original tensor voting, especially the efficiency. One of the main advantages is its explicit voting formulations, which benefit the completion of tensor voting theory and computational efficiency. Firstly, new decaying function was designed following the basic spirit of decaying function in original tensor voting (OTV). Secondly, analytic stick tensor voting (ASTV) was formulated using the new decaying function. Thirdly, analytic plate and ball tensor voting (APTV, ABTV) were formulated through controllable stick tensor construction and tensorial integration. These make the each voting of tensor can be computed by several non-iterative matrix operations, improving the efficiency of tensor voting remarkably. Experimental results validate the effectiveness of proposed method.

By tracking the changing rate of hard decisions during every two consecutive iterations of the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) penalized decoding, an efficient early termination (ET) criterion is proposed to improve the convergence rate of ADMM penalized decoder for low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. Compared to the existing ET criterion for ADMM penalized decoding, the proposed method can reduce the average number of iterations significantly at low signal-to-noise ratios with negligible performance degradation.

With the popularity of cloud computing services, outsourcing computation has entered a period of rapid development. Modular exponentiation is one of the most expensive operations in public key cryptographic systems, but the current outsourcing algorithms for modular exponentiations (MExps) with single server are inefficient or have small checkability. In this paper, we propose an efficient and fully verifiable algorithm for outsourcing multiple MExps with single untrusted server where the errors can be detected by an outsourcer with a probability of 1. The theory analysis and experimental evaluations also show that the proposed algorithm is the most efficient one compared with the previous work. Finally, we present the outsourcing schemes of digital signature algorithm (DSA) and attribute based encryption (ABE) as two applications of the proposed algorithm.

Cognitive radio (CR) is considered as the most promising solution to the so-called spectrum scarcity problem, in which channel sensing is an important problem. In this paper, the problem of determining the period of medium access control (MAC)-layer channel sensing in cognitive radio networks (CRNs) is studied. In our study, the channel state is statistically modeled as a continuous-time alternating renewal process (ARP) alternating between the OFF and ON states for the primary user (PU)'s communication activity. Based on the statistical ARP model, we analyze the CRNs with different SU MAC protocols, taking into consideration the effects of practical issues of imperfect channel sensing and non-negligible channel sensing time. Based on the analysis results, a constrained optimization problem to find the optimal sensing period is formulated and the feasibility of this problem is studied for systems with different OFF/ON channel state length distributions. Numerical results are presented to show the performance of the proposed sensing period optimization scheme. The effects of practical system parameters, including channel sensing errors and channel sensing time, on the performance and the computational complexity of the proposed sensing period optimization scheme are also investigated.

In this paper, we study a variant of the MINIMUM DOMINATING SET problem. Given an unweighted undirected graph G=(V,E) of n=|V| vertices, the goal of the MINIMUM SINGLE DOMINATING CYCLE problem (MinSDC) is to find a single shortest cycle which dominates all vertices, i.e., a cycle C such that for the set V(C) of vertices in C and the set N(V(C)) of neighbor vertices of C, V(G)=V(C)∪N(V(C)) and |V(C)| is minimum over all dominating cycles in G [6], [17], [24]. In this paper we consider the (in)approximability of MinSDC if input graphs are restricted to some special classes of graphs. We first show that MinSDC is still NP-hard to approximate even when restricted to planar, bipartite, chordal, or r-regular (r≥3). Then, we show the (lnn+1)-approximability and the (1-ε)lnn-inapproximability of MinSDC on split graphs under P≠NP. Furthermore, we explicitly design a linear-time algorithm to solve MinSDC for graphs with bounded treewidth and estimate the hidden constant factor of its running time-bound.

Irreversible thermal paints or temperature sensitive paints are a kind of special temperature sensor which can indicate the temperature grad by judging the color change and is widely used for off-line temperature measurement during aero engine test. Unfortunately, the hot gases flow within the engine during measuring always make the paint color degraded, which means a serious saturation reduction and contrast loss of the paint colors. This phenomenon makes it more difficult to interpret the thermal paint test results. Present contrast enhancement algorithms can significantly increase the image contrast but can't protect the hue feature of the paint images effectively, which always cause color shift. In this paper, we propose a color restoration method for thermal paint image. This method utilizes the atmospheric scattering model to restore the lost contrast and saturation information, so that the hue can be protected and the temperature can be precisely interpreted based on the image.

We propose an algorithm for the gathering problem of mobile agents in arbitrary networks (graphs) with Byzantine agents. Our algorithm can make all correct agents meet at a single node in O(fm) time (f is the upper bound of the number of Byzantine agents and m is the number of edges) under the assumption that agents have unique ID and behave synchronously, each node is equipped with an authenticated whiteboard, and f is known to agents. Here, the whiteboard is a node memory where agents can leave information. Since the existing algorithm achieves gathering without a whiteboard in Õ(n9λ) time, where n is the number of nodes and λ is the length of the longest ID, our algorithm shows an authenticated whiteboard can significantly reduce the time for the gathering problem in Byzantine environments.
