  • Prosodic Characteristics of Japanese Conversational Speech

    In this paper, we quantitively analyzed speech data in seven different styles to make natural Japanese conversational speech synthesis. Three reading styles were produced at different speeds (slow, normal and fast), and four speaking styles were produced by enacting conversation in different situations (free, hurried, angry and polite). To clarify the differences in prosodic characteristics between conversational speech and read speech, means and standard deviations of vowel duration, vowel amplitude and fundamental frequency (F0) were analyzed. We found large variation in these prosodic parameters. To look more precisely at the segmental duration and segmental amplitude differences between conversational speech and read speech, control rules of prosodic parameters in reading styles were applied to conversational speech. F0 contours of different speaking styles are superposed by normalizing the segmental duration. The differences between estimated values and actual values were analyzed. Large differences were found at sentence final and key (focused) phrases. Sentence final positions showed lengthening of segmental vowel duration and increased segmental vowel amplitude. Key phrase positions featured raising F0.

  • Manifestation of Linguistic Information in the Voice Fundamental Frequency Contours of Spoken Japanese

    Prosodic features of the spoken Japanese play an important role in the transmission of linguistic information concerning the lexical word accent, the sentence structure and the discourse structure. In order to construct prosodic rules for synthesizing high-quality speech, therefore, prosodic features of speech should be quantitatively analyzed with respect to the linguistic information. With a special focus on the fundamental frequency contour, we first define four prosodic units for the spoken Japanese, viz., prosodic word, prosodic phrase, prosodic clause and prosodic sentence, based on a decomposition of the fundamental frequency contour using a functional model for the generation process. Syntactic units are also introduced which have rough correspondence to these prosodic units. The relationships between the linguistic information and the characteristics of the components of the fundamental frequency contour are then described on the basis of results obtained by the analysis of two sets of speech material. Analysis of weathercast and newscast sentences showed that prosodic boundaries given by the manner of continuation/termination of phrase components fall into three categories, and are primarily related to the syntactic boundaries. On the other hand, analysis of noun phrases with various combinations of word accent types, syntactic structures, and focal conditions, indicated that the magnitude and the shape of the accent components, which of course reflect the information concerning the lexical accent types of constituent words, are largely influenced by the focal structure. The results also indicated that there are cases where prosody fails to meet all the requirements presented by word accent, syntax and discourse.

    To make a fast Bi-CMOS SRAM yield high without speed degradation, three defect-repair methods, the address comparison method, the fuse decoder method and the distributed fuse method, were considered in detail and their advantages and disadvantages were made clear. The distributed fuse method is demonstrated to be further improved by a built-in fuse word driver and a built-in fuse column selector, and fuse analog switches. This enhanced distributed fuse scheme was examined in a fast Bi-CMOS SRAM. A maximun access time of 14 ns and a chip size of 8.8 mm17.4 mm are expected for a 4 Mb Bi-CMOS SRAM in the future.

  • High Quality Synthetic Speech Generation Using Synchronized Oscillators

    For the production of high quality synthetic sounds in a text-to-speech system, an excellent synthesizing method of speech signals is indispensable. In this paper, a new speech analysis-synthesis method for the text-to-speech system is proposed. The signals of voiced speech, which have a line spectrum structure at intervals of pitch in the linear frequency domain, can be represented approximately by the superposition of sinusoidal waves. In our system, analysis and synthesis are performed using such a harmonic structure of the signals of voiced speech. In the analysis phase, assuming an exact harmonic structure model at intervals of pitch against the fine structure of the short-time power spectrum, the fundamental frequency f0 is decided so as to minimize the error of the log-power spectrum at each peak position. At the same time, according to the value of the above minimized error, the rate of periodicity of the speech signal is detemined. Then the log-power spectrum envelope is represented by the cosine-series interpolating the data which are sampled at every pitch period. In the synthesis phase, numerical solutions of non-linear differential equations which generate sinusoidal waves are used. For voiced sounds, those equations behave as a group of mutually synchronized oscillators. These sinusoidal waves are superposed so as to reconstruct the line spectrum structure. For voiceless sounds, those non-linear differential equations work as passive filters with input noise sources. Our system has some characteristics as follows. (1) Voiced and voiceless sounds can be treated in a same framowork. (2) Since the phase and the power information of each sinusoidal wave can be easily controlled, if necessary, periodic waveforms in the voiced sounds can be precisely reproduced in the time domain. (3) The fundamental frequency f0 and phoneme duration can be easily changed without much degradation of original sound quality.

    256 MbDRAM chips have been fabricated by mix-and-match method using high NA KrF excimer laser stepper and i-line stepper. In the case of KrF stepper, the negative siloxane resist is used for rectangular and wiring patterns and the positive novolak-resin resist is used for hole patterns. Both of these two kinds of resist produce accurate pattern shape, allow-able pattern profile, satisfactory depth of focus and sufficient overlay accuracy for device fabrication in 0.25 µm design rule.

    A new automated main distributing frame (AMDF) system is developed that reduces operating costs in metallic-cable main distributing frames (MDFs) used for communication networks. In this AMDF system, a robot inserts connecting-pins into the crosspoint holes of matrix-boards. This process allows jumpering to be completed within three minutes and the route-setting for line testing within one minute. The AMDF system provides approximately 2,100 office equipment cable-terminals. Parallel installation of several AMDF systems allows larger MDF systems to be constructed. This system reduces costs and achieves high reliability through three new technologies: high-density matrix-board, precision pin-handling, and a highly reliable system control. Test results for a prototype AMDF system confirm their effectiveness.

    Four circuit techniques and a layout design scheme were proposed to realize a 2 Mb VRAM used 0.8 µm technology. They are the enhanced circuit technologies for high speed operation, the functional circuit design and the effective repair schemes for a VRAM, the low power consumption techniques to active and standby mode and a careful layout design scheme realizing high noise immunity. Using these design techniques, a 2 Mb VRAM is suitable for the graphics application of a 5125128 pixels basis screen, with a clear mode of 4.6 GByte/sec and a 4-multi column write mode of 400 MByte/sec, even using the same 0.8 µm technology as the previous VRAM (1 Mb) was realized.

    This paper presents a method for verifying safety property of a communication protocol modeled as two extended communicating finite-state machines with two unbounded FIFO channels connecting them. In this method, four types of atomic formulae specifying a condition on a machine and a condition on a sequence of messages in a channel are introduced. A human verifier describes a logical formula which expresses conditions expected to be satisfied by all reachable global states, and a verification system proves that the formula is indeed satisfied by such states (i.e. the formula is an invariant) by induction. If the invariant is never satisfied in any unsafe state, it can be concluded that the protocol it safe. To show the effectiveness of this method, a sample protocol extracted from the data transfer phase of the OSI session protocol was verified by using the verification system.

    A new system of measuring the thickness of thin filn or paper using 40 kHz ultrasonic wave in air is described. The thickness of samples measured is smaller by a factor of sevreal hundreds than the wavelength of sound. Experinents with polymer and metal films and paper are described to demonstrate the measurement possibilities.

  • Compact Test Sequences for Scan-Based Sequential Circuits

    Full scan design of sequential circuits results in greatly reducing the cost of their test generation. However, it introduces the extra expense of many test clocks to control and observe the values of flip-flops because of the need to shift values for the flip-flops into the scan panh. In this paper we propose a new method of generating compact test sequences for scan-based sequential circuits on the assumption that the number of shift clocks is allowed to vary for each test vector. The method is based on Boolean function manipulation using a shared binary decision diagram (SBDD). Although the test generation algorithm is basically for general sequential circuits, the computational cost is much lower for scan-based sequential circuits than for non-scanbased sequential circuits because the length of a test sequence for each fault is limited. Experimental results show that, for all the tested circuits, test sequences generated by the method require much smaller number of test clocks than compact or minimum test sets for combinational logic part of scan-based sequential circuits. The reduction rate was 48% on the average in the experiments.

  • Adaptive Image Sharpening Method Using Edge Sharpness

    This paper proposes a new method for automatic improvement in image quality through adjusting the image sharpness. This method does not need prior knowledge about image blur. To improve image quality, the sharpness must be adjusted to an optimal value. This paper shows a new method to evaluate sharpness without MTF. It is considered that the human visual system judges image sharpness mainly based upon edge area features. Therefore, attention is paid to the high spatial frequency components in the edge area. The value is defined by the average intensity of the high spatial fequency components in the edge area. This is called the image edge sharpness" value. Using several images, edge sharpness values are compared with experimental results for subjective sharpness. According to the experiments, the calculated edge sharpness values show a good linear relation with subjective sharpness. Subjective image sharpness does not have a monotonic relation with subjective image quality. If the edge sharpness value is in a particular range, the image quality is judged to be good. According to the subjective experiments, an optimal edge sharpness value for image quality was obtained. This paper also shows an algorithm to alter an image into one which has another edge sharpness value. By altering the image, which achieves optimal edge sharpness using this algorithm, image sharpness can be optimally adjusted automatically. This new image improving method was applied to several images obtained by scanning photographs. The experimental results were quite good.

  • A Simple Algorithm for Finding All Solutions of Piecewise-Linear Resistive Circuits

    An efficient algorithm is presented for finding all solutions of piecewise-linear resistive circuits. In this algorithm, a simple sign test is performed to eliminate many linear regions that do not contain a solution. Therefore, the number of simultaneous linear equations to be solved is substantially decreased. This test, in its original form, requires O(Ln2) additions and comparisons in the worst case, where n is the number of variables and L is the number of linear regions. In this paper, an effective technique is proposed that reduces the computational complexity of the sign test to O(Ln). Some numerical examples are given, and it is shown that all solutions can be computed very efficiently. The proposed algorithm is simple and can be easily programmed by using recursive functions.

    This paper describes a new single-unit underground radar for detecting underground buried pipes. The pipe depth can be calculated from the hyperbolic shape in the cross-sectional image of radar echoes. The edge contour of the image is extracted, and the buried depth is judged from the similarity between the extracted hyperbolic curve and the theoretical curve. A suitable amplification rate is estimated by choosing the best image from numerous cross-sectional images formed during one antenna movement repeated at different amplification rates. The best image has few pixels corresponding to weak and saturated signals. The new radar is very compact, so it can be operated by one person. Objects buried up to 2.0m deep can be detected.

    We describe K-NET, a support system for development of sequence control programs. The K-NET description model is based on the colored Petri net and timed Petri net. K-NET concisely expresses sequence control flow including synchronization, interlock and concurrence, and provides high-level data processing by being combined with a conventional procedural language. K-NET has an editor, simulator, generator, reporter and monitor to support the control program development procedure ranging from basic and detail design to programming and testing. We have added a new function to K-NET so it assists development of control programs for programmable controllers, and have applied it to an automatic bolt supplying system. The operation results are satisfactory.

    A cylindrical active phased array antenna was developed. A primary surveillance radar (PSR) antenna and a secondary surveillance radar (SSR) antenna are integrated conformally. The PSR antenna employs two-dimensional electronic beam scanning. The SSR antenna employs electronic beam scanning in azimuth. Advantages of this antenna, design architecture employed and measured characteristics are described.

    In practical applications of digital filters it is more realistic to treat multiplier coefficients as finite intervals than restricting them to infinite or very long word-length representations. However, this can not be done it the frequency response performance under interval assumption is difficult to analyze. In this paper, it is proved that stable lattice allpass filters possess bounded continuous phase response when lattice parameters vary in bounded intervals. It is shown that sharp bounds on the interval phase response can be computed easily at an arbitrary frequency using a simple recursive procedure. Application of this property to the problem of finite word-length lattice allpass filter design is also discussed. By formulating this problem as an interval design it is possible to solve it efficiently independent of the number system used to represent multiplier coefficients.

  • FDTD Analysis of Two-Dimensional Cavity-Backed Antenna for Subsurface Radar

    The antennas for subsurface radar are usually covered with a conducting cavity to prevent the radiation field from affecting the electromagnetic environment and to protect the received field from external noises. Furthermore, radiowave absorber is attached to the interior wall of the cavity in order to suppress the multiple reflections in the cavity. In this paper, the characteristics of the two-dimensional cavity-backed antenna having the absorber and the over-all properties of this subsurface radar due to buried objects are numerically analyzed by the Finite-Difference Time-Domain method. It is shown that the pulse propagation in the ground is confined to the narrow region due to the cavity. It is also shown that the multiple reflections in the cavity are effectively suppressed by choosing the suitable absorber, and so that the distinctive pulse echo can be obtained.

    String grammars (languages) have been extensively studied from 60's. On the other hand, the transformational grammar, proposed by Chomsky, contains the transformation from the set of derivation trees of context-free language to the surface set. And the grammar regarded a tree as an input sentence to some transducer. After that from latter half of 60's, the studies of acceptor, transducer, and so on, whose input is a tree, have been done extensively. In this paper we propose, as a model, a new type of transducer which translates trees into trees and investigate its fundamental properties. The model proposed here is the pushdown tree transducer (for shortly PDTT) that is an extension of the finite state tree transducer discussed by J. W. Thacher, W. C. Rounds, J. Engelfriet, and so on. The main subjects discussed here (we consider only top-down case (t-PDTT)), are as follows: (1) final state t-PDTT translation is equivalent to empty stack t-PDTT translation and vice versa, (2) for any t-PDTT, a single state t-PDTT which is equivalent to it always exists, (3) as a standard form the symmetric stack form t-PDTT is proposed and based on this, it is shown that any single state t-PDTT can be always converted into a linear stack t-PDTT, and so on.

  • Second Harmonic Generation in Poled Polymer Films Doped with α-Cyano Unsaturated Carboxylic Acids

    Poled polymer films doped with novel nonlinear organic materials, α-cyano unsaturated carboxylic acid (α-CUCA) derivatives, are prepared. Linear and second-order nonlinear optical properties are investigated. It is found that as the value of hyperpolarizability of the derivatives increases, the second-order nonlinear susceptibility of the film increases. Cerenkov-type second harmonic generation (SHG) of Nd: YAG laser is realized in a poled polymer waveguide doped with the α-CUCA material with a slight absorption at doubled wavelength.

  • COACH:A Computer Aided Design Tool for Computer Architects

    A modern architect can not design high performance computer architecture without thinking all factors of performance from hardware level (logic/layout design) to system level (application programs, operating systems, and compilers). For computer architecture design, there are few practical CAD tools, which support design activities of the architect. In this paper, we propose a CAD tool, called COACH, for computer architecture design. COACH supports architecture design from hardware level to system level. To make a high-performance general purpose computer system, the architect evaluates system performance as well as hardware level performance. To evaluate hardware level performance accurately, logic/layout synthesis tools and simulator are used for evaluation. Logic/layout synthesis tools translate the architecture design into logic circuits and layout pattern and simulator is used to get accurate information on hardware level performance which consists of clock frequency, the number of transistors, power consumption, and so on. To evaluate system level performance, a compiler generator is introducd. The compiler generator generates a compiler of a programming language from the desripition of architecture design. The designed architecture is simulated in the behavior level with programs compiled by the compiler, and the architect can get information on system level performance which consists of program execution steps, etc. From both hardware level performance and system level performance, the architect can evaluate and revise his/her architecture, considering the architecture from hardware level to system level. In this paper, we propose a new design methodology which uses () logic/layout synthesis tools and simulators as tools for architecture design and () a compiler generator for system level evaluation. COACH, a CAD system based on the methodology, is discussed and a prototype of COACH is implemented. Using the design methodology, two processors are designed. The result of the designs shows that the proposed design methodology are effective in architecture design.
