The GPS trajectory databases serve as bases for many intelligent applications that need to extract some trajectories for future processing or mining. When doing such tasks, spatio-temporal range queries based methods, which find all sub-trajectories within the given spatial extent and time interval, are commonly used. However, the history trajectory indexes of such methods suffer from two problems. First, temporal and spatial factors are not considered simutaneously, resulting in low performance when processing spatio-temporal queries. Second, the efficiency of indexes is sensitive to query size. The query performance changes dramatically as the query size changed. This paper proposes workload-aware Adaptive OcTree based Trajectory clustering Index (ATTI) aiming at optimizing trajectory storage and index performance. The contributions are three-folds. First, the distribution and time delay of the trajectory storage are introduced into the cost model of spatio-temporal range query; Second, the distribution of spatial division is dynamically adjusted based on GPS update workload; Third, the query workload adaptive mechanism is proposed based on virtual OcTree forest. A wide range of experiments are carried out over Microsoft GeoLife project dataset, and the results show that query delay of ATTI could be about 50% shorter than that of the nested index.

We examine the relationship between 116 VHF sensor events recorded by the VHF sensor on the Maido-1 satellite and lightning strokes detected by the World Wide Lightning Location Network (WWLLN) to show that most of the VHF sensor events were caused by lightning discharges. For each VHF sensor event, the WWLLN events within 1400 km from the subsatellite point and within 1 sec, 30 sec, and 300 sec of the VHF sensor trigger time are analyzed. We find that the coincidence rates in the North and South American continents, and in Southeast/East Asia and the Australian continent are greater than 0.90. Those in the African and European continents, and in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans are less than 0.61. These high enough coincidence rates indicate that the VHF sensor events were emitted from lightning, although the coincidence rates in the other regions are quite low because of the low detection efficiency of the WWLLN in the regions. We also focus on 6 coincident events measured by both the VHF sensor and the WWLLN. The incidence angles of the EM waves for the VHF sensor are estimated from the group delay characteristics of the recorded EM waveforms. Compared with the WWLLN lightning locations, the two incidence angles are temporally and spatially coincident. These results indicate that a large fraction of the VHF sensor events are emitted by lightning discharges.

Magnetoencephalography (MEG) measures very weak neuromagnetic signals using SQUID sensors. Standard MEG analyses include averaged waveforms, isofield maps and equivalent current dipoles. Beamforming MEG analyses provide us with frequency-dependent spatiotemporal information about the cerebral oscillatory changes related to not only somatosensory processing but also language processing. Language dominance is able to be evaluated using laterality of power attenuation in the low γ band in the frontal area. Neuromagnetic signals of the unilateral upper movements are able to be decoded using a support vector machine.

In this paper, we present a construction of (n,k,d,m) secure regenerating codes for distributed storage systems against eavesdroppers that can observe either data stored in at most m storage nodes or downloaded data for repairing at most m failed nodes in a network where m < k ≤ d ≤ n-1. The (n,k,d,m) secure regenerating code is based on an (n,k,d) minimum bandwidth regenerating (MBR) code, which was proposed by Rashmi, Shah and Kumar as optimal exact-regenerating codes, for all values of the parameters (n,k,d). The (n,k,d,m) secure regenerating codes have the security as a secret sharing scheme such that even if an eavesdropper knows either data stored in at most m storage nodes or downloaded data for repairing at most m failed nodes, no information about data leaks to the eavesdropper.

In this letter we proposed the linear combination of two ISI-free pulses with different decay rates in order to obtain a new Nyquist pulse. The proposed pulse contains a new design parameter β, giving an additional degree of freedom to minimize the bit error probability performance in the presence of symbol-timing errors, for a given roll-off factor α. Several practical tools are implemented for evaluating the performance of the proposed filter. The novel pulse is evaluated in terms of the bit error probability performance in the presence of symbol-timing errors. Eye diagrams are presented to visually assess the vulnerability of the transmission system to ISI, and the maximum distortion is estimated as a quantitative measure of performance.

The authors propose a method to make a movement plan for relocation of the railway cars in preparation for the final assembly. It obtains solution through three steps. The first step is to extract the order constraints between the movements of the railway cars based on their locations before and after relocation. The second step is to introduce the movement which puts a railway car into another location temporarily, in order to avoid a deadlock in the movements. And the final step is to obtain the movement order for carrying out the relocation in the shortest time in accordance with the calculated order constraints by using the genetic algorithm (GA). The order constraints are resolved in advance and therefore the movement order can easily be decided by GA. As the result, the developed system takes time shorter than an expert for planning the relocation.

A 6-bit, 7 mW, 700 MS/s subranging ADC using Capacitive DAC (CDAC) and gate-weighted interpolation fabricated in 90 nm CMOS technology is demonstrated. CDACs are used as a reference selection circuit instead of resistive DACs (RDAC) for reducing settling time and power dissipation. A gate-weighted interpolation scheme is also incorporated to the comparators, to reduce the circuit components, power dissipation and mismatch of conversion stages. By virtue of recent technology scaling, an interpolation can be realized in the saturation region with small error. A digital offset calibration technique using capacitor reduces comparator's offset voltage from 10 mV to 1.5 mV per sigma. Experimental results show that the proposed ADC achieves a SNDR of 34 dB with calibration and FoM is 250 fJ/conv., which is very attractive as an embedded IP for low power SoCs.

We propose a novel technique for the estimation of device-parameters suitable for postfabrication performance compensation and adaptive delay testing, which are effective means to improve the yield and reliability of LSIs. The proposed technique is based on Bayes' theorem, in which the device-parameters of a chip, such as the threshold voltage of transistors, are estimated by current signatures obtained in a regular IDDQ testing framework. Neither additional circuit implementation nor additional measurement is required for the purpose of parameter estimation. Numerical experiments demonstrate that the proposed technique can achieve 10-mV accuracy in threshold voltage estimations.

This paper proposes an IP fast rerouting method which can be implemented in OpenFlow framework. While the current IP is robust, its reactive and global rerouting processes require the long recovery time against failure. On the other hand, IP fast rerouting provides a milliseconds-order recovery time by proactive and local restoration mechanism. Implementation of IP fast rerouting is not common in real systems, however; it requires the coordination of additional forwarding functions to a commercial hardware. We propose an IP fast rerouting mechanism using OpenFlow that separates control function from hardware implementation. Our mechanism does not require any extension of current forwarding hardware. On the contrary, increase of backup routes becomes main overhead of our proposal. We also embed the compression mechanism to our IP fast rerouting mechanism. We show the effectiveness of our IP fast rerouting in terms of the fast restoration and the backup routes compression effect through computer simulations.
Compressive sensing enables quite lower sampling rate compared with Nyquist sampling. As long as the signal is sparsity in some basis, the random sampling with CS can be employed. In order to make CS applied in the practice, the Analog to Information Converter (AIC) should be involved. Based on the Limited Random Sequence (LRS) modulation, the AIC with LRS can be designed with high performance according to the fixed sparsity. However, if the sparsity of the signal varies with time, the original AIC with LRS is not efficient. In this paper, the adaptive AIC which adapts its scheme of LRS according to the variation of the sparsity is proposed and the prototype system is designed. Due to the adaption of the AIC with the scheme of LRS, the sampling rate can be further reduced. The simulation results confirm the performance of the proposed adaptive AIC scheme. The prototype system can successfully fulfil the random sampling and adapt to the variation of sparsity, which verify and consolidate the validity and feasibility for the future implementation of adaptive AIC on chip.

This paper presents a wide range in supply voltage, resolution, and sampling rate asynchronous successive approximation register (SAR) analog-to-digital converter (ADC). The proposed differential flip-flop in SAR logic and high efficiency wide range delay element extend the flexibility of speed and resolution tradeoff. The ADC fabricated in 40 nm CMOS process covers 4–10 bit resolution and 0.4–1 V power supply range. The ADC achieved 49.8 dB SNDR and the peak FoM of 3.4 fJ/conv. with 160 kS/sec at 0.4 V single power supply voltage. At 10 bit mode and 1 V operation, up to 10 MS/s, the FoM is below 10 fJ/conv. while keeping ENOB of 8.7 bit.

This paper first formulates the optimal instantaneous resource allocation, including path selection, power allocation and subchannel scheduling with proportional fairness in MIMO, OFDMA and relay-enhanced network. The joint optimization problem is a NP-hard one with non-linear constraints. To simplify this problem, we first propose a water-filling method named 'CP-AP w PF' to adaptively allocate power only among transmitting antennas. Then, a modified iterative water-filling algorithm named 'AP-AP w PF' is proposed to achieve adaptive power allocation on each subchannel by using the Jensen's inequality. Simulation shows that 'AP-AP w PF' algorithm improves the throughput for cell-edge users, and achieve a tradeoff between maximizing system throughput and assuring individual QoS.

The quantum dot optical frequency comb laser (QD-CML) is an attractive photonic device for generating a stable emission of fine multiple-wavelength peaks. In the present paper, 1.0-GHz and 10-ps-order short optical pulsation is successfully demonstrated from a hybrid mode-locked QD-CML with an ultrabroadband wavelength tuning range in the T+O band. In addition, 10-GHz high-repetition intensity-stable short optical pulse generation with a high S/N ratio is successfully demonstrated using an external-cavity QD-CML with a 10th-harmonic mode-locking technique.

This paper proposes a new BIST (Built-In Self-Test) method for static testing of an ADC (Analog-to-Digital Converter) with transition detection method. The proposed BIST uses a triangle-wave as an input test stimulus and calculates the ADC's static parameters. Simulation results show that the proposed BIST can test both rising and falling transitions with minimal hardware overhead.

Information affects almost all aspects of life, and thus the Quality of Information (IQ) plays a critical role in businesses and societies; It can have significant positive and negative impacts on the quality of life of citizens, employees and organizations. Over many years aspects and challenges of IQ have been studied within various contexts. As a result, the general approach to the study of IQ has offered numerous management and measurement approaches, IQ frameworks and list of IQ criteria. As the volume of data and information increases, IQ problems become pervasive. Whereas earlier studies investigated specific aspects of IQ, the next phase of IQ research will need to examine IQ in a wider context, thus its impact on the quality of life and societies. In this paper we apply an IQ oriented framework to two cases, cloud computing and lifelogging, illustrating the impact of IQ on the quality of life. The paper demonstrates the value of the framework, the impact IQ can have on the quality of life and in summary provides a foundation for further research.

To obtain an ultra-short high-intensity pulse source, we investigated the amplification characteristics of two types of pulses (dissipative soliton and stretched pulses) produced by our Yb-doped fiber laser oscillator. Our results show that the dissipative soliton pulse can be amplified with less deterioration than the stretched pulse.

In OFDM-based cognitive radio systems, due to the out-of-band leakage from the secondary transmission, the interference to primary users must be considered in order to guarantee the quality of service of the primary transmission. For multiuser cognitive radio systems, there exist two crucial issues in resource allocation: fairness and efficiency, in order to balance the two issues, we proposed a new utility-based cross-layer resource allocation algorithm, which can not only control the interference to primary users caused by secondary users, but also balance the spectral efficiency and fairness among cognitive users. Further, the optimal NP-hard resource allocation problem in multiuser OFDM-based systems is reduced to the sub-optimal solution by dividing the original problem into the subcarrier allocation problem and the power allocation problem. It is shown that the proposed algorithm can obtain the best performance in terms of the average rate or the utility among existing algorithms, and at the same time, all the users obtain fair resource allocation.

IEEE 802.11ac uses DL MU-MIMO and channelization for very high throughput. We propose a new algorithm for adaptive channelization in DL MU-MIMO WLANs. The proposed scheme can enhance the throughput efficiency for DL MU-MIMO transmission by adaptively applying the channelization scheme according to data size and MCS. Moreover, our proposal can reduce the overhead due to the exchange of control frames for DL MU-MIMO transmission in WLANs. A performance evaluation shows that the proposed scheme is superior to IEEE 802.11ac WLAN.

Multi-sensory communications with haptics attract a number of researchers in recent years. To provide services of the communications with high realistic sensations, the researchers focus on the quality of service (QoS) control, which keeps as high quality as possible, and the quality of experience (QoE) assessment, which is carried out to investigate the influence on user perception and to verify the effectiveness of QoS control. In this paper, we report the present status of studies on multi-sensory communications with haptics. Then, we divide applications of the communications into applications in virtual environments and those in real environments, and we mainly describe collaborative work and competitive work in each of the virtual and real environments. We also explain QoS control which is applied to the applications and QoE assessment carried out in them. Furthermore, we discuss the future directions of studies on multi-sensory communications.

The traditional selection cooperation scheme selects the relay with best instantaneous receive signal-to-noise ratio to forward the message and achieves good outage performance, which may however cause poor fairness among relays. In this letter, we propose two practical selection cooperation schemes in Decode-and-Forward (DF) fashion to improve the fairness of relay selection. Numerical results suggest that both of the proposed schemes can achieve fairness close to the strict fairness scheme without outage performance deterioration. It is also validated that these schemes have lower complexities than traditional ones and therefore are practical for real networks.
