  • Experimental Investigation on RF Characteristics of Cryogenically-Cooled 3W-Class Receiver Amplifier Employing GaN HEMT with Blue Light LED for Mobile Base Stations

    This paper presents an experimental investigation on the RF characteristics of a 3W-class cryogenically-cooled receiver amplifier employing a gallium-nitride high electron mobility transistor (GaN HEMT) with a blue light for mobile base stations. In general, a cryogenically-cooled receiver amplifier using a GaN HEMT exhibits unstable DC characteristics similar to those found in the current collapse phenomenon because the GaN HEMT loses thermal energy at cryogenic temperatures. The fabricated cryogenically-cooled receiver amplifier achieves stable DC characteristics by injecting blue light into the GaN HEMT instead of thermal energy. Experimental results show that the amplifier achieves fine stable DC characteristics for deviation in the drain-source current from 42% to 5% and RF characteristics for a maximum power added efficiency from 58% to 68% without and with the blue light at 60,K. The fabricated amplifier is effective in reducing the power consumption at cryogenic temperatures. To the best of our knowledge, this paper is the first report regarding RF characteristics of a cryogenically-cooled receiver amplifier using a blue light for mobile base stations.

    Much attention has recently been paid to direction of arrival (DOA) estimation using compressed sensing (CS) techniques, which are sparse signal reconstruction methods. In our previous study, we developed a method for estimating the DOAs of multi-band signals that uses CS processing and that is based on the assumption that incident signals have the same complex amplitudes in all the bands. That method has a higher probability of correct estimation than a single-band DOA estimation method using CS. In this paper, we propose novel DOA estimation methods for multi-band signals with frequency characteristics using the Khatri-Rao product. First, we formulate a method that can estimate DOAs of multi-band signals whose phases alone have frequency dependence. Second, we extend the scheme in such a way that we can estimate DOAs of multi-band signals whose amplitudes and phases both depend on frequency. Finally, we evaluate the performance of the proposed methods through computer simulations and reveal the improvement in estimation performance.

    A discriminative reference-based method for scene image categorization is presented in this letter. Reference-based image classification approach combined with K-SVD is approved to be a simple, efficient, and effective method for scene image categorization. It learns a subspace as a means of randomly selecting a reference-set and uses it to represent images. A good reference-set should be both representative and discriminative. More specifically, the reference-set subspace should well span the data space while maintaining low redundancy. To automatically select reference images, we adapt affinity propagation algorithm based on data similarity to gather a reference-set that is both representative and discriminative. We apply the discriminative reference-based method to the task of scene categorization on some benchmark datasets. Extensive experiment results demonstrate that the proposed scene categorization method with selected reference set achieves better performance and higher efficiency compared to the state-of-the-art methods.

  • Subcarrier Allocation for the Recovery of a Faulty Cell in an OFDM-Based Wireless System

    An efficient subcarrier allocation scheme of a supporting cell is proposed to recover the communication of faulty cell users in an OFDM-based wireless system. With the proposed subcarrier allocation scheme, the number of subcarriers allocated to faulty cell users is maximized while the average throughput of supporting cell users is maintained at a desired level. To find the maximum number of subcarriers allocated to faulty cell users, the average throughput of the subcarrier with the k-th smallest channel gain in a subcarrier group is derived by an inductive method. It is shown by simulation that the proposed subcarrier allocation scheme can provide more subcarriers to faulty cell users than the random selection subcarrier allocation scheme.

  • Path Loss Model for Low Antenna Heights in Residential Areas at Middle VHF Band

    A path loss model for low antenna heights below surrounding buildings in residential areas is presented to contribute to the construction of VHF band wireless systems. The model is constructed on the basis of measurement results at 167.65MHz, near center frequency at VHF band. Path loss characteristics in the middle VHF band are compared to those in bands above UHF. The dominant paths in bands above UHF include propagation paths below surrounding buildings, such as paths along roads. However, in the middle VHF band, these paths are instantly attenuated because their 1st Fresnel zone radius is larger than the average building height or road width. The dominant path in the middle VHF band is the over-roof propagation path, and the 1st Fresnel zone of the path is shielded by the buildings and the ground surface. The proposed path loss model has two features. First, it derives the effective height of the ground surface from the terrain profile of the buildings and the ground surface. Second, it uses formulas of a two-path model to take the shielding of the 1st Fresnel zone into account. Finally, it is shown that the proposed model is able to predict the path loss measurement results more accurately than the conventional model.

  • Roughness Classification with Aggregated Discrete Fourier Transform

    In this paper, we propose a texture descriptor based on amplitude distribution and phase distribution of the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) of an image. One dimensional DFT is applied to all the rows and columns of an image. Histograms of the amplitudes and gradients of the phases between adjacent rows/columns are computed as the feature descriptor, which is called aggregated DFT (ADFT). ADFT can be easily combined with completed local binary pattern (CLBP). The combined feature captures both global and local information of the texture. ADFT is designed for isotropic textures and demonstrated to be effective for roughness classification of castings. Experimental results show that the amplitude part of ADFT is also discriminative in describing anisotropic textures and it can be used as a complementary descriptor of local texture descriptors such as CLBP.

    This paper proposes a new small multiband printed antenna for wireless telecommunications modules that can realize Machine-to-Machine applications. We reconfigure our previous antenna to cover the 700MHz, 800MHz, and 900MHz bands, and add two new elements (second strips) to cover the 2GHz band. The new antenna achieves operation in quad-bands: 700MHz, 800MHz, 900MHz, and 2GHz. Frequency characteristics are analyzed using electromagnetic-simulation software based on the method of moments, and the validity of the numerical results is shown based on measured Voltage Standing Wave Ratio (VSWR) characteristics and the radiation patterns of a prototype antenna. The proposed antenna is compact with a VSWR bandwidth (≤2) of 27.5% in bands including 700MHz, 800MHz, and 900MHz, and a VSWR bandwidth (≤2) of 10.6% in the band including 2GHz. We clarify that the operating mechanism in the 2GHz band is equivalent to that of a one wavelength folded offset fed dipole antenna comprising a monopole element and second strips, and that the operating frequency in the 2GHz band can be determined by the path length from the tip of the monopole element to the tip of the second strip via a feeding point.

    We proposed a through-hole based transformer between microstrip line and post-wall waveguide (PWW). The transformer is based on a through-hole which is electrically separated from top and bottom broad walls of a waveguide by ring-shaped spaces. The proposed transformer shows a considerable merit compared with a conventional one based on blind-via in terms of fabrication and cost because it can be realized by through-holes in general printed-circuit-board technology. We selected liquid crystal polymer (LCP) as the material of substrates because of its lower dielectric loss and easy fabrication. The transformer was fabricated and measured. The loss associated with the mode conversion is estimated to be around 0.32,dB, and the bandwidth for a reflection smaller than $-15$,dB is 8,GHz, i.e., from 59 to 67,GHz.

  • A Novel SAR-Probe Calibration Method Using a Waveguide Aperture in Tissue-Equivalent Liquid Open Access

    A novel method for calibrating the probes used in standard measurement systems to evaluate SAR (specific absorption rate) of the radio equipment operating at frequencies over 3GHz is proposed. As for the proposed method, the electric-field distribution produced by a waveguide aperture installed in a liquid container is used to calibrate the SAR probe. The field distribution is shown to be the same as that given by a conventional calibration method by analytically deriving a closed-form expression for the field produced by the waveguide aperture with the help of the paraxial approximation. Comparing the approximated and measured distributions reveals that the closed-form expression is valid for the electric-field distribution near the central axis of the aperture. The calibration factor for a commercial SAR probe is evaluated by the proposed method and agrees well with that provided by the manufacturer of the probe.

  • Evaluation Technique for Complex Permittivity of Mid-Loss Underfill Materials by a Cut-Off Circular Waveguide Method in Millimeter Wave Bands

    Underfill materials are used in a packaging of millimeter wave IC. However, there are few reports for dielectric properties of underfill materials in millimeter wave region. A cut-off circular waveguide method is one of a powerful technique to evaluate precisely complex permittivity in millimeter wave region. This method may be useful not only for low-loss materials, but also for mid-loss ones with loss tangent of 10$^{-2}$ order. In this paper, an evaluation technique based on the cut-off circular waveguide method is presented to measure mid-loss underfill materials. As a result, the relative permittivity $ arepsilon_{r}$ and the loss tangent tan$delta$ are in the range of 2.8$sim $3.4 and (1.0$sim$1.6)$ imes10^{-2}$, respectively. Also, the measurement precision is 2.3% for $ arepsilon_{r} approx 3$ and 40% for tan$delta approx 10^{-2}$.

    With the development of the Internet, there are more and more shared resources on the Web. Personalized search becomes increasingly important as users demand higher retrieval quality. Personalized search needs to take users' personalized profiles and information needs into consideration. Collaborative tagging (also known as folksonomy) systems allow users to annotate resources with their own tags (features) and thus provide a powerful way for organizing, retrieving and sharing different types of social resources. To capture and understand user preferences, a user is typically modeled as a vector of tag: value pairs (i.e., a tag-based user profile) in collaborative tagging systems. In such a tag-based user profile, a user's preference degree on a group of tags (i.e., a combination of several tags) mainly depends on the preference degree on every individual tag in the group. However, the preference degree on a combination of tags (a tag-group) cannot simply be obtained from linearly combining the preference on each tag. The combination of a user's two favorite tags may not be favorite for the user. In this article, we examine the limitations of previous tag-based personalized search. To overcome their problems, we model a user profile based on combinations of tags (tag-groups) and then apply it to the personalized search. By comparing it with the state-of-the-art methods, experimental results on a real data set shows the effectiveness of our proposed user profile method.

    The goal of dimension reduction is to represent high-dimensional data in a lower-dimensional subspace, while intrinsic properties of the original data are kept as much as possible. An important challenge in unsupervised dimension reduction is the choice of tuning parameters, because no supervised information is available and thus parameter selection tends to be subjective and heuristic. In this paper, we propose an information-theoretic approach to unsupervised dimension reduction that allows objective tuning parameter selection. We employ quadratic mutual information (QMI) as our information measure, which is known to be less sensitive to outliers than ordinary mutual information, and QMI is estimated analytically by a least-squares method in a computationally efficient way. Then, we provide an eigenvector-based efficient implementation for performing unsupervised dimension reduction based on the QMI estimator. The usefulness of the proposed method is demonstrated through experiments.

    In the theory of periodic gratings, there is no method to make up a numerical solution that satisfies the reciprocity so far. On the basis of the shadow theory, however, this paper proposes a new method to obtain a numerical solution that satisfies the reciprocity. The shadow thoery states that, by the reciprocity, the $m$th order scattering factor is an even function with respect to a symmetrical axis depending on the order $m$ of diffraction. However, a scattering factor obtained numerically becomes an even function only approximately, but not accurately. It can be decomposed to even and odd components, where an odd component represents an error with respect to the reciprocity and can be removed by the average filter. Using even components, a numerical solution that satisfies the reciprocity is obtained. Numerical examples are given for the diffraction of a transverse magnetic (TM) plane wave by a very rough periodic surface with perfect conductivity. It is then found that, by use of the average filter, the energy error is much reduced in some case.

  • Coherent Combining-Based Initial Ranging Scheme for MIMO-OFDMA Systems

    A coherent combining-based initial ranging scheme is proposed for multiple-input multiple-output and orthogonal frequency division multiple access systems. The proposed algorithm utilizes the correlation properties of the ranging codes to resolve the multipath components, coherently combines the initial ranging signal of resolved path on each receiving antenna to maximize the output signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio, and then collects the power of the multipath signals to detect the states of the ranging codes. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme has much better performance than the available noncoherent combining method, and can accommodate more active ranging users simultaneously in each cell.

  • On Finding Maximum Disjoint Paths for Many-to-One Routing in Wireless Multi-Hop Network

    Provisioning multiple paths can improve fault tolerance and transport capability of multi-routing in wireless networks. Disjoint paths can improve the diversity of paths and further reduce the risk of simultaneous link failure and network congestion. In this paper we first address a many-to-one disjoint-path problem (MOND) for multi-path routing in a multi-hop wireless network. The objective of this problem is to maximize the minimum number of disjoint paths of every source to the destination. We prove that it is NP-hard to obtain k disjoint paths for every source when k ≥ 3. To solve this problem efficiently, we propose a heuristic algorithm called TOMAN based on network flow theory. Experimental results demonstrate that it outperforms three related algorithms.

    Presentation slide composition is an important job for knowledge workers. Instead of starting from scratch, users tend to make new presentation slides by reusing existing ones. A primary challenge in slide reuse is to select desired materials from a collection of existing slides. The state-of-the-art solution utilizes texts and images in slides as well as file names to help users to retrieve the materials they want. However, it only allows users to choose an entire slide as a query but does not support the search for a single element such as a few keywords, a sentence, an image, or a diagram. In this paper, we investigate content-based search for a variety of elements in presentation slides. Users may freely choose a slide element as a query. We propose different query processing methods to deal with various types of queries and improve the search efficiency. A system with a user-friendly interface is designed, based on which experiments are performed to evaluate the effectiveness and the efficiency of the proposed methods.

    Runtime analysis is to enhance the safety of critical systems by monitoring the change of corresponding external environments. In this paper, a modified FTA approach, making full utilization of the existing safety analysis result, is put forward to achieve runtime safety analysis. The procedures of the approach are given in detail. This approach could be widely used in safety engineering of critical systems.

  • Improving Small-Delay Fault Coverage of On-Chip Delay Measurement by Segmented Scan and Test Point Insertion

    With IC design entering the nanometer scale integration, the reliability of VLSI has declined due to small-delay defects, which are hard to detect by traditional delay fault testing. To detect small-delay defects, on-chip delay measurement, which measures the delay time of paths in the circuit under test (CUT), was proposed. However, our pre-simulation results show that when using on-chip delay measurement method to detect small-delay defects, test generation under the single-path sensitization is required. This constraint makes the fault coverage very low. To improve fault coverage, this paper introduces techniques which use segmented scan and test point insertion (TPI). Evaluation results indicate that we can get an acceptable fault coverage, by combining these techniques for launch off shift (LOS) testing under the single-path sensitization condition. Specifically, fault coverage is improved 27.02∼47.74% with 6.33∼12.35% of hardware overhead.

  • Vertical Handover Strategy for Multi-Layered Real-Time Video Traffics

    In this letter, we present a new method of alleviating the deterioration in the quality of real-time video service during vertical handover (VHO). The proposed method stochastically delays the starting time of the service disruption of VHO in order to reduce the number of lost frames caused by the inter-frame dependency of multi-layered video traffic. The results show that the proposed method significantly decreases the average frame loss time at the sacrifice of an increased handover execution time by one half of the group of picture (GOP) interval of the video traffic.

    This paper provides a prototype neural prosthesis system dedicated to restoring continence and micturition function for patients with lower urinary tract diseases, such as detrusor hyperreflexia and detrusor-sphincter dyssynergia. This system consists of an ultra low-noise electroneurogram (ENG) signal recording module, a bi-phasic electrical stimulator module and a control unit for closed-loop bladder monitoring and controlling. In order to record extremely weak ENG signal from extradural sacral nerve roots, the system provides a programmable gain from 80 dB to 117 dB. By combining of advantages of commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) electronics and custom designed IC, the recording front-end acquires a fairly low input-referred noise (IRN) of 0.69 μVrms under 300 Hz to 3 kHz and high area-efficiency. An on-chip multi-steps single slope analog-to-digital converter (ADC) is used to digitize the ENG signals at sampling rate of 10 kSPS and achieves an effective number of bits (ENOB) of 12.5. A bi-phasic current stimulus generator with wide voltage supply range (±0.9 V to ±12.5 V) and variable output current amplitude (0-500 μA) is introduced to overcome patient-depended impedance between electrode and tissue electrolyte. The total power consumption of the entire system is 5.61 mW. Recording and stimulation function of this system is switched by control unit with time division multiplexing strategy. The functionality of this proposed prototype system has been successfully verified through in-vivo experiments from dogs extradural sacral nerve roots.
