  • Method for Visualizing Complicated Structures Based on Unified Simplification Strategy

    In this paper, we present a novel force-directed method for automatically drawing intersecting compound mixed graphs (ICMGs) that can express complicated relations among elements such as adjacency, inclusion, and intersection. For this purpose, we take a strategy called unified simplification that can transform layout problem for an ICMG into that for an undirected graph. This method is useful for various information visualizations. We describe definitions, aesthetics, force model, algorithm, evaluation, and applications.

    We achieved the first 10 Gb/s WDM transmission at 1064 and 1550 nm over 24 km of photonic crystal fiber (PCF). We confirmed an improvement in the bit error rate (BER) performance after the transmission, namely "negative power penalties" of -0.5 and -0.3 dB at 1064 and 1550 nm, respectively. Our experimental result and theoretical estimation revealed that the signal degradation induced by the chromatic dispersion can be effectively suppressed by employing the pre-chirp technique with a conventional Z-cut lithium niobate (LN) modulator. We also show theoretically that we can expect to realize 10 Gb/s transmission over a 24 km PCF with negligible BER degradation in the 1060 to 1600 nm wavelength range by using the pre-chirp technique.

    This paper proposes low-complexity pre- and post-frequency domain equalization and frequency diversity combining methods for block transmission schemes with cyclic prefix. In the proposed methods, the equalization and diversity combining are performed simultaneously in discrete frequency domain. The weights for the proposed equalizer and combiner are derived based on zero-forcing and minimum-mean-square error criteria. We demonstrate the performance of the proposed methods, including bit-error rate performance and peak-to-average power ratios of the transmitted signal, via computer simulations.

    We design M(≥3)-phase spreading sequences of Markov chains optimal in terms of bit error probabilities in asynchronous SSMA (spread spectrum multiple access) communication systems. To this end, we obtain the distributions of the normalized MAI (multiple access interference) for such systems and find a necessary and sufficient condition that the distributions become independent of the phase shifts.

    This paper presents a model for the variation in height of the subscriber station (SS) antenna with respect to the path loss for microwave-band wireless access systems. The propagation mechanism that causes the dependency of the height variation characteristics of the received level at an SS on the SS location and operating frequency is clarified in terms of geometrical optics (GO) using the uniform geometrical theory of diffraction (UTD). The height variation characteristics strongly depend on whether or not regular reflected waves that have a higher level than that of the diffracted wave arrive at the SS. A representation of the model is shown. The model is validated using measured data at 2.2, 5.2, and 25.15 GHz and the validity of the model is shown. This model is useful in the radio zone design of microwave-band broadband wireless access (BWA) systems operating in a non-line-of-sight environment, and in estimating the height gain at a mobile station antenna for mobile communications.

  • Performance Analysis of Large-Scale IP Networks Considering TCP Traffic

    In this paper, we propose a novel analysis method for large-scale networks with consideration of the behavior of the congestion control mechanism of TCP. In the analysis, we model the behavior of TCP at end-host and network link as independent systems, and combine them into a single system in order to analyze the entire network. Using this analysis, we can analyze a large-scale network, i.e. with over 100/1,000/10,000 routers/hosts/links and 100,000 TCP connections very rapidly. Especially, a calculation time of our analysis, it is different from that of ns-2, is independent of a network bandwidth and/or propagation delay. Specifically, we can derive the utilization of the network links, the packet loss ratio of the link buffer, the round-trip time (RTT) and the throughput of TCP connections, and the location and degree of the network congestion. We validate our approximate analysis by comparing analytic results with simulation ones. We also show that our analysis method treats the behavior of TCP connection in a large-scale network appropriately.

    In a community which consists of a large number of people interacting with each other, social dilemma is an important problem. This problem occurs when the payoff of each person conflicts with the total payoff of the community which he/she belongs to. Evolutionary game theory has been used as a powerful mathematical framework to analyze such a social problem. Recently, the authors have proposed replicator dynamics with reallocation of payoffs. In this model, the government is willing to lead the population to a desirable goal state by using collections and reallocations of payoffs. In this paper, we investigate this model, and show conditions for the goal state to be a locally or a globally asymptotically stable equilibrium point, respectively. We also propose a government's strategy depends on population states which can stabilize the goal state globally.

    It has been shown that the output information produced by the soft output Viterbi algorithm (SOVA) is too optimistic. To compensate for this, the output information should be normalized. This letter proposes a simple normalization technique that extends the existing sign difference ratio (SDR) criterion. The new normalization technique counts the sign differences between the a-priori information and the extrinsic information, and then adaptively determines the corresponding normalization factor for each data block. Simulations comparing the new technique with other well-known normalization techniques show that the proposed normalization technique can achieve about 0.2 dB coding gain improvement on average while reducing up to about 1/2 iteration for decoding.

    A new scheme for reducing optical beat interference noise in a reflective semiconductor optical amplifier based wavelength division multiplexed/subcarrier multiplexing -- passive optical network is proposed. This method uses an Fabry Perot laser locked by modulated lights from optical network units in a central office. As an experimental verification, it is reported that carrier to noise ratio is enhanced by 10 dB and power penalty is improved by 16 dB.

    A passive optical network (PON) that provides fiber to the home (FTTH) services is a fundamental access network topology in Japan. An optical fiber line monitoring and testing system is essential if we are to improve service reliability and reduce the maintenance costs of optical access networks. PONs have optical splitters in their optical fiber lines. It is difficult to find a fault in an optical fiber line equipped with an optical splitter by using a conventional optical fiber line testing system, which uses optical time-domain reflectometer (OTDR) in a central office (CO), because Rayleigh backscattering from the branched fibers accumulates in the OTDR trace. This paper describes a newly developed optical fiber line testing method that employs bi-directional OTDRs with two wavelengths at branched fiber regions in a PON to locate a fault precisely. Optical fiber line testing is conducted by two OTDRs that are installed in a CO and on a customer's premises, respectively. The OTDR in the CO has a U-band maintenance wavelength. We present two kinds of maintenance wavelength allocation for OTDRs on a customer's premises, which are in the U-band and C-band respectively. An OTDR whose maintenance wavelength is in the U-band enables us to test in-service PON lines simply by filtering the U-band wavelength. For the maintenance wavelengths in the C-band, we can use a cost-effective conventional OTDR to test the PON from the customer's premises on condition that we clarify the peak pulse power limit and dynamic range. We describe the test procedures for both cases. We also clarify the insertion loss design for an optical filter in the CO when using the U-band to provide the maintenance wavelength and the criteria for in-service line testing when the using C-band to provide the maintenance wavelength. To confirm the feasibility of our approach, we demonstrate a bi-directional OTDR method using the U-band and the C-band, and the test procedure, which successfully detected fault locations in branched fiber regions. We also describe the use of packet loss measurements to investigate the effect of in-service line testing with an OTDR in the C-band on data communication quality.

  • Measurement of Small Birefringence in an Optical Fiber by Dual Wavelength Maximum Extinction Ratio Method

    When a linearly polarized light is launched into a birefringent material, the output light is generally elliptically polarized. The ratio of the major and minor axes of the polarization ellipse varies depending on the angle between the polarization direction of the input light and the birefringent axis of the medium. The maximum ratio is determined only by the retardation due to the birefringence. Utilizing this phenomena, birefringence of a medium whose principal axis direction is unclear is measured with high precision by measuring the maximum extinction ratio for various input light polarization directions. Ambiguity in retardation associated with angular function solution is removed by measurement at two adjacent wavelengths. The measurement principle of the new method is confirmed by applying it to a quarter wave plate made of quartz. Birefringence of a 3 m long ribbon fiber as small as 10-7 is successfully measured.

  • Automatic Acquisition of Qualia Structure from Corpus Data

    This paper presents a method to automatically acquire a given noun's telic and agentive roles from corpus data. These relations form part of the qualia structure assumed in the generative lexicon, where the telic role represents a typical purpose of the entity and the agentive role represents the origin of the entity. Our proposed method employs a supervised machine-learning technique which makes use of template-based contextual features derived from token instances of each noun. The output of our method is a ranked list of verbs for each noun, across the different qualia roles. We also propose a variant of Spearman's rank correlation to evaluate the correlation of two top-N ranked lists. Using this correlation method, we represent the ability of the proposed method to identify qualia structure relative to a conventional template-based method.

  • Mill: A Geographical Location Oriented Overlay Network Managing Data of Ubiquitous Sensors

    With the rapid rise in the demand for location related service, communication devices such as PDAs or cellar phones must be able to search and manage information related to the geographical location. To leverage location-related information is useful to get an in-depth perspective on environmental circumstances, such as traffic conditions or weather information. To handle the large number of information and queries communication devices generate in the current ubiquitous environment, some scalable mechanism must be required. DHTs and some overlay networks supporting range search are proposed. However, these overlay networks can not process queries of geographical region search. In this paper, we propose a overlay network called "Mill" which can efficiently manage information related to the geographical location. In DHT based overlay networks, each node has responsibility to manage a part of the whole hash table. DHTs provide scalable systems and support fast search. However, DHTs are not good at solving geographical search (range search), because hash function only supports exact match. In the Mill network, each node manages a part of ID-space calculated by "Z-ordering," which represents squire surface of the earth. This structure of ID-space enables to process region queries easily and fast. And Mill supports any scale of region search. We evaluate proposed system by using traffic infomation generator called "HAKONIWA." Simulation results show that the performance of Mill is good as well as other DHT systems. In addtion, Mill provedes more efficient region search than other overlay networks supporting range search.

    In this letter, we present a modified printed folded λ/2 dipole antenna design for Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) applications in UHF band (470-862 MHz). The arms of dipole are meandered to yield an asymmetrical structure. Wideband operation is obtained by increasing dipole-area. The impedance matching of the dipole structure is obtained by inserting some slots on the dipole-arms. This antenna combines omni-directional radiation pattern and wide bandwidth in an easy-to-fabricate structure. The experimental results of the constructed prototype are presented.

  • Identification of Attack Nodes from Traffic Matrix Estimation

    Distributed denial-of-service attacks on public servers have recently become more serious. The most effective way to prevent this type of traffic is to identify the attack nodes and detach (or block) attack nodes at their egress routers. However, existing traceback mechanisms are currently not widely used for several reasons, such as the necessity of replacement of many routers to support traceback capability, or difficulties in distinguishing between attacks and legitimate traffic. In this paper, we propose a new scheme that enables a traceback from a victim to the attack nodes. More specifically, we identify the egress routers that attack nodes are connecting to by estimating the traffic matrix between arbitral source-destination edge pairs. By monitoring the traffic variations obtained by the traffic matrix, we identify the edge routers that are forwarding the attack traffic, which have a sharp traffic increase to the victim. We also evaluate the effectiveness of our proposed scheme through simulation, and show that our method can identify attack sources accurately.

    A 128128 pixel functional image sensor was implemented. The sensor was able to capture images at 1,000 frame/s and extract the sizes and positions of 10 objects/frame when clocked at 8 MHz. The size of each pixel was 18 µm18 µm and the fill factor was 28%. The chip, 3.24 mm3.48 mm in size, was implemented with a 0.35 µm CMOS sensor process; the power consumption was 29.7 mW at 8 MHz.

    The advanced-DFM (Design For Manufacturability) RAM provides the solution for the limitation of SRAM voltage scaling down and the countermeasure of the process fluctuations. The characteristics of this RAM are the voltage scalability (@0.6 V operation) with wide operating margin and the reliability of long data retention time. The memory cell consists of 2 Cell/bit with the complementary dynamic memory operation and has the 1 Cell/bit test mode for the accelerated screening against the marginal cells. The GND bitline pre-charge sensing scheme and SSW (Sense Synchronized Write) peripheral circuit technologies are also adopted for the low voltage and DFV (Dynamic Frequency and Voltage) controllable SoC which will be strongly required from the many kinds of applications. This RAM supports the DFM functions with both good cell/bit for advanced process technologies and the voltage scalable SoC memory platform.

    This paper describes logic and analog test schemes that improve the testability of a pixel-parallel fingerprint identification circuit. The pixel contains a processing circuit and a capacitive fingerprint sensor circuit. For the logic test, we propose a test method using a pseudo scan circuit to check the processing circuits of all pixels simultaneously. In the analog test, the sensor circuit employs dummy capacitance to mimic the state of a finger touching the chip. This enables an evaluation of the sensitivity of all sensor circuits on logical LSI tester without touching the chip with a finger. To check the effectiveness of the schemes, we applied them to a pixel array in a fingerprint identification LSI. The pseudo scan circuit achieved a 100% failure-detection rate for the processing circuit. The analog test determines that the sensitivities of the sensor circuit in all pixels are in the proper range. The results of the tests confirmed that the proposed schemes can completely detect defects in the circuits. Thus, the schemes will pave the way to logic and analog tests of chips integrating highly functional devices stacked on a LSI.

  • Chaotic UWB Communication System for Low-Rate Wireless Connectivity Applications

    A chaotic UWB communication system based on IEEE 802.15.4a is proposed for wireless connectivity applications. A compact and simple architecture is implemented by using a chaotic UWB signal and a non-coherent detection scheme. The chaotic UWB signal has noise-like characteristics in time and frequency domains and naturally wide spectrum within a limited bandwidth. The chaotic UWB signal generator is designed on two methods with the bandwidth of 3.1 to 5.1 GHz, and a baseband process is realized on an FPGA including an adaptive decision and a channel code for non-source coded data stream. The system performance is evaluated by transmitting MP3 audio/voice with 32-byte length PSDUs and measuring PERs for assessing the system sensitivity and the interferer compatibility. The proposed system can be an excellent candidate for short-range connectivity services, as well as an inexpensive system with good capability for narrow-band interferences.

  • Automatic Extraction of the Fine Category of Person Named Entities from Text Corpora

    Named entities play an important role in many Natural Language Processing applications. Currently, most named entity recognition systems rely on a small set of general named entity (NE) types. Though some efforts have been proposed to expand the hierarchy of NE types, there are still a fixed number of NE types. In real applications, such as question answering or semantic search systems, users may be interested in more diverse specific NE types. This paper proposes a method to extract categories of person named entities from text documents. Based on Dual Iterative Pattern Relation Extraction method, we develop a more suitable model for solving our problem, and explore the generation of different pattern types. A method for validating whether a category is valid or not is proposed to improve the performance, and experiments on Wall Street Journal corpus give promising results.
