  • A Multi-Beam Combining Scheme for DS-CDMA Systems Using Weighting Factor Based on Interference Level

    This paper focuses on a multi-beam combining scheme for DS-CDMA systems, which has RAKE combiners in multiple overlapped beams, in order to increase the reverse link capacity of DS-CDMA. This scheme is a very attractive technique because the maximal ratio combining (MRC) is carried out in space and time domains. However, in a practical situation, since the terminals in own sector are not uniformly located, the interference levels in respective beams are different. Therefore, receivers at the base station do not achieve ideal combining. This paper proposes a multi-beam combining scheme for DS-CDMA systems using weighting factor based on interference level of each beam. A fast closed loop transmission power control (TPC) scheme for the multi-beam combining system is also proposed. It is confirmed by computer simulation that the proposed scheme has excellent performance in the reverse link even if terminals in own sector are not uniformly located.

  • Highly Reliable and High Power 980 nm Pump Laser Diode Module for Undersea Cable Systems

    Highly reliable and high power weakly index guided buried-stripe type 980 nm pump laser diodes developed for undersea applications are reviewed. The 10,000-hour large scale reliability tests of the first generation LD chips shows that 16.7 FIT for the random failure was confirmed at 10C with 60% confidence level at 120 mW output power. We also fabricated a FBG locked co-axial type module using a can-sealed LD with a two-lens system, which showed a stable FBG locked mode oscillation at 980 nm under the temperature range from 5C to 45C. The 5,000-hour heat cycle test of the modules reveals that the cumulative failure rate after 27 years at 10C is expected to be 0.023%. These first generation LD modules were employed in the transoceanic commercial systems such as Pacific Crossing-1 and the Japan-US cable system projects. We have also succeeded in developing the 980 nm LD for higher output operation with optimizing waveguide design. The 1000 µm long LD showed CW kink-free operation up to 545 mW optical output and a maximum output power of over 650 mW, which was limited by thermal rollover. In addition, a preliminary aging test at 350 mW optical output power at 50C has shown stable operation up to 2,300 h. We also confirmed 300 mW kink-free fiber output power with a co-axial type module with the improved coupling efficiency of approximately 78%. These figures are the highest reported operation levels for 980-nm co-axial type modules.

  • Burst Error Recovery for VF Arithmetic Coding

    One of the disadvantages of compressed data is their vulnerability, that is, even a single corrupted bit in compressed data may destroy the decompressed data completely. Therefore, Variable-to-Fixed length Arithmetic Coding, or VFAC, with error detecting capability is discussed. However, implementable error recovery method for compressed data has never been proposed. This paper proposes Burst Error Recovery Variable-to-Fixed length Arithmetic Coding, or BERVFAC, as well as Error Detecting Variable-to-Fixed length Arithmetic Coding, or EDVFAC. Both VFAC schemes achieve VF coding by inserting the internal states of the decompressor into compressed data. The internal states consist of width and offset of the sub-interval corresponding to the decompressed symbol and are also used for error detection. Convolutional operations are applied to encoding and decoding in order to propagate errors and improve error control capability. The proposed EDVFAC and BERVFAC are evaluated by theoretical analysis and computer simulations. The simulation results show that more than 99.99% of errors can be detected by EDVFAC. For BERVFAC, over 99.95% of l-burst errors can be corrected for l 32 and greater than 99.99% of other errors can be detected. The simulation results also show that the time-overhead necessary to decode the BERVFAC is about 12% when 10% of the received words are erroneous.

  • Providing Service Differentiation in Wireless Networks

    Differentiated services (Diffserv) model is one of the possible solutions for providing quality of service (QoS) on the Internet. Most existing approaches assume that the packet loss is an indication of network congestion and thus reduce the sending rates of sources. For wireless networks, the assumption is not proper since packet losses may be caused by other reasons, such as fading and interference of the signal. Therefore, these approaches do not work well in wireless networks. In this paper, we propose an approach which is able to provide service differentiation in wireless environments. In our approach, the rate share of a connection is determined by the associated weight. By keeping a proper amount of extra data in the network, the proposed approach can achieve weighted proportional fairness, which can provide selective QoS without any particular support from the network. We use the ns simulator to evaluate our approach. Simulation results show the validity of the proposed approach.

    Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing-Direct Sequence/Code Division Multiple Access (OFDM-DS/CDMA) systems provide frequency diversity gain avoiding inter symbol interference (ISI) in a frequency selective fading channel. However, path diversity gain can not be obtained by using conventional OFDM-DS/CDMA schemes. This paper proposes a new multiple antenna transmission system with combined path diversity and frequency diversity. Signal of each antenna is delayed by several chips to create artificial path diversity as well as frequency diversity of multi-carrier transmission in which can then be combined by using a RAKE receiver. Therefore multiple antenna transmission scheme creates a path diversity effect on uncorrelated signals in multi-carriers from each antenna. The received uncorrelated signals can be processed by Maximum Ratio Combining (MRC) diversity without ISI at a RAKE receiver even when we use FFT modulation. As a result, we can obtain combined path diversity and frequency diversity gain effectively by the RAKE system with the combination of multiple antennas.

  • On Decoding Techniques for Cryptanalysis of Certain Encryption Algorithms

    In this paper, important methods for cryptanalysis of the stream cipher based on a class of keystream generators are discussed. These methods employ an approach called the fast correlation attack. This cryptographic problem is treated by considering its equivalent channel coding approach, namely decoding of certain very low rate codes in presence of very high noise. A novel family of algorithms for the fast correlation attack is presented. The algorithms are based on the iterative decoding principle in conjunction with a novel method for constructing the parity-checks. A goal of this paper is to summarize reported results and to compare some of the recent ones. Accordingly, the family is compared with recently proposed improved fast correlation attacks based on iterative decoding methods. An analysis of the algorithms performances and complexities is presented. The corresponding trade-offs between performance, complexity and required inputs are pointed out.

    The performance of a twisted-pair channel under ADSL environment is assumed to be dominated by far end crosstalk (FEXT) and additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN). In this paper, we study the channel capacity of the copper twisted pair and the optimum input power spectral density distribution at this channel capacity in the presence of ADSL environment. The channel capacity under different loop length and different input power will also be given. The simulation results show that the distribution of the optimum input power spectral density in the presence of AWGN and FEXT is not uniform. This is different from the situation where AWGN is the only interference, where the input power distribution is approximately uniform.

    This work presents an analysis of IDDQ dependency on the primary current that flows through the bridging fault and driven gates current. A maximum primary current depends only on the test vectors which minimize channel resistances of transistors. The driven gates current generates when intermediate voltage occurs on the faulty node with creation current path between VDD and GND through the driven gates, and its value depends on circuit parameters such as transistor sizes and fan-in number of driven gates.

    Currently, the issues in Quality of Service, fairness and pricing strategies should have expedited the emergence of service differentiation in wireless access networks. In this paper, we propose a novel scheduling algorithm, called the Wireless Differentiated Fair Queueing (WDFQ) algorithm, to accommodate such need by providing delay/jitter controls, and fair residual bandwidth sharing for real-time and non-real-time traffic streams simultaneously. We show that the WDFQ scheme can achieve excellent performance, including timely delivery of real-time traffic, virtually error-free transmission of non-real-time traffic, and fair usage of channel bandwidth among remote stations. In addition, the location-dependent channel error property, as appeared in most wireless networks, are considered in the model and the temporary short error bursts are compensated by credits of bandwidth. The simulation results suggest that the length of retransmission period should be adapted to the error length to achieve good performance and maintain low implementation complexity.

    In this paper, we describe statistical properties of timing jitter of symbol timing recovery circuit for carrierless amplitude/phase modulation (CAP)-based very high-rate digital subscriber line (VDSL) system. Analytical expressions of the timing jitter for envelope-based timing recovery system, such as squarer-based timing recovery (S-TR) and absolute-value-based timing recovery (A-TR) schemes, are derived in the presence of additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) or far-end crosstalk (FEXT). In particular, the analytical and simulation results of the timing jitter performance are presented and compared for a 51.84 Mb/s 16-CAP VDSL system. The A-TR system implemented digitally meets the DAVIC's VDSL system requirement, which specifies the maximum peak-to-peak jitter value of 1.5 nsec and the acquisition time of 20 msec.

    This paper evaluates through laboratory and field experiments the combined effect of the coherent adaptive antenna array diversity (CAAAD) receiver and signal-to-interference plus background noise ratio (SINR)-based fast transmit power control (TPC) in order to improve performance beyond that of space diversity (SD) with maximal ratio combining (MRC) in all low-to-high signal-to-interference power ratio (SIR) channels in the W-CDMA reverse link. Although the previously proposed CAAAD receiver comprising an adaptive antenna array based on the minimum mean square error (MMSE) criterion and a coherent Rake combiner was very effective in suppressing interference in low SIR (interference is severe) channels, SD employing MRC in noise limited channels (high SIR) outperformed the CAAAD because of its uncorrelated reception of fading variation due to its large antenna separation. The laboratory experimental results showed that the required average transmit signal energy per bit-to-background noise spectrum density (Eb/N0) with the CAAAD receiver using fast TPC is lower than that with an SD receiver over a wide range of maximum Doppler frequency values from fD = 5 Hz to 500 Hz in a low-to-high SIR channel. The results of the field experiments also showed that combining CAAAD and fast TPC is a powerful means to reduce severe multiple access interference (MAI) from high rate users in a low-to-high SIR environment and is more effective than using the SD receiver with the same number of antennas, i.e., the measured BER was improved by approximately one order of magnitude, when the relative transmit power of the desired user was 8 dB with two antennas at the average received SIR at the antenna input of -12 dB.

    To reduce an amount of computation of full search algorithm for fast motion estimation, we propose a new and fast matching algorithm without any degradation of predicted images. The computational reduction without any degradation comes from adaptive matching scan algorithm according to the image complexity of the reference block in current frame. Experimentally, we significantly reduce the computational load compared with conventional full search algorithm.

    Many experimentally and theoretically based models have been proposed to predict, quantitatively evaluate, and combat the fading phenomenon in mobile communication systems. However, to the best of the authors' knowledge, up to now there is no objective method to determine which is the most suitable distribution to model the fading phenomenon based on experimental data. In this work, the Minimum Description Length (MDL) criterion for model selection is proposed for that purpose. Furthermore, the MDL analysis is performed for some of the most widely used fading models based on measurements taken in a sub-urban environment.

    We have proposed a new string-based haptic interface device in this paper. It is a kind of device that allows a user to use both hands and multi-fingers to direct manipulate the virtual objects in the computer simulated virtual environment. One of the advantages of the device is to allow the user to use both hands to perform the cooperative works of hands, such as holding a large object that cannot be grasped or held by single hand. In addition, the haptic feedback sensation provided by the device at the fingertips makes possible for the user to perform dexterous manipulation, such as manipulating small size of objects. We have discussed about the design of the proposed device and have elaborated the methods of fingertip positions measurement and force feedback generation. The experiments had been carried out to verify the capabilities of the proposed device.

    One major breakthrough on the communication society recently is the extension of networking from wired to wireless networks. This has made possible creating a mobile distributed computing environment and has brought us several new challenges in distributed protocol design. Obviously, wireless networks do have some fundamental differences from wired networks that need to be paid special attention of, such as lower communication bandwidth compared to wired networks, limited electrical power due to battery capacity, and mobility of processes. These new issues make traditional recovery algorithm unsuitable. In this paper, we propose an efficient algorithm with O(nr) message complexity where O(nr) is the total number of mobile hosts (MHs) related to the failed MH. In addition, these MHs only need to rollback once and can immediately resume its operation without waiting for any coordination message from other MHs. During normal operation, the application message needs O(1) additional information when it transmitted between MHs and mobile support stations (MSSs). Each MSS must keep an ntotal_h*n cell_h dependency matrix, where O(ntotal_h) is the total number of MHs in the system and ncell_h is the total number of MHs in its cell. Finally, one related issue of resending lost messages is also considered.

  • Ray Tracing Analysis of Large-Scale Random Rough Surface Scattering and Delay Spread

    We have discussed a ray tracing method to estimate the scattering characteristics from random rough surface. It has been shown from the traced rays that the diffracted rays dominate over the reflected rays. For the field evaluation, we have used the Fresnel function for the diffracted coefficient and the Fresnel's reflection coefficients. Numerical examples have been carried out for the scattering characteristics of an ocean wave-like rough surface and the delay spared characteristics of a building-like surface. In the present work we have demonstrated that the ray tracing method is effective to numerical analysis of a rough surface scattering.

  • Effect of a Finite Ground Plane on the S-Parameter between Two Dipole Elements

    The transmission S-parameter, S21, between dipole elements on a rectangular finite ground plane is calculated by the MoM with planar-segments in the horizontally and vertically polarized configurations. Supposed a 1/10 scaling, the frequency range is selected 0.15-0.8 GHz. The size of the finite ground plane is 40 cm 100 cm. The dipole-element length is 18.8 cm (half-wavelength at 0.8 GHz). The distance between dipole elements is 30 cm. The results are compared to the calculated results with the conventional MoM-GTD hybrid method and also the measured results with a TRL-calibrated network analyzer. It makes clear that the MoM-GTD hybrid method is not applicable to a small ground plane in the vertically polarized configuration. The results calculated by the MoM with planar-segments agree well to the measured results both in the horizontal and vertical polarizations. The results show that the size of the finite ground plane for the vertical polarization should be much larger than for the horizontal polarization.

System performances of noncoherent M-ary signals over slow and flat fading channels in the presence of AWGN can be evaluated from the new probability density function (PDF) of the envelope.

    In this paper, we analyze the error performance of coherent M-ary FSK (MFSK) signals using the union bound which is an upper bound on the bit error probability over frequency-nonselective slow Nakagami and Rician fading channels with additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN), respectively. Furthermore, the performances of uncoded coherent and noncoherent signals are compared under the fading channels. The error probability of noncoherent MFSK signals over slow and flat fading channels when AWGN is present can be derived and evaluated from the new probability density function (PDF) for the envelope of the received signals.

    In this paper, a new expression is derived for the bit error rate (BER) performance of Gray-encoded MDPSK for M=2 and 4 in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems over time-variant and frequency-selective Rayleigh fading channels. We assume that the guard time is sufficiently larger than the delay spread to solve the intersymbol interference (ISI) problem on the demodulated OFDM signal. In this case, the performance depends on the Doppler spread of fading channel. The closed form expression for the bit error probability of MDPSK/OFDM extended from the result in [5] shows that the BER performance of MDPSK is determined by (N + NG ) fD Ts where N is the number of subchannels, NG the length of the guard interval, fD the maximum Doppler frequency, and Ts the sampling period. The theoretical analysis results are confirmed by computer simulations for DPSK and QDPSK signals.
