A coplanar type lumped-element 6-pole microwave Chebyshev bandpass filter (BPF) of center frequency (f0) 2.0 GHz and fractional bandwidth (FBW) 1.0 % was designed. For the design method, theory of direct coupled resonator filters using K-inverters was employed. Coplanar type lumped-element BPFs are composed of a meander-line L and interdigital C elements. The frequency response was simulated and analyzed using an electromagnetic field simulator (Sonnet-EM). Further, the changes in f0 and FBW of the BPF were also realized by the mechanical tuning method.

Electromagnetic (EM) wave absorbers have been used for improving the EM environment of an electronic toll collection (ETC) system on an express highway or a wireless local area network (LAN) system in an indoor environment. In this paper, an efficient multi-ray propagation model, which uses 3D geometry and image techniques to trace multiple signal rays from transmitter to receiver, is employed to analyze the EM environment of a dedicated short-range communication (DSRC) system on an express highway. The validity of the model employed is discussed by the comparison with the results obtained by an experiment on the highways. The analysis shows that the possible undesired communications between onboard equipment that acts as a receiver and DSRC beacon which transmits the radio signals, is improved by increasing the EM wave-absorption capability of the sidewalls and the pavement of the highway. Another advantage of the employed model is that it is effective for investigating the location of wave absorbers to be set up on the highway, and it takes only a fraction of a minute for computation.
During devastating natural disasters, numerous people want to make calls to check on their families and friends in the stricken areas, but many call attempts on mobile cellular systems are blocked due to limited radio frequency resources. To reduce call blocking and enable as many people as possible to access mobile cellular systems, placing a limit on the holding time for each call has been studied [1],[2]. However, during a catastrophe, emergency calls, e.g., calls to fire, ambulance, or police services are also highly likely to increase and it is important that the holding time for these calls is not limited. A method of limiting call holding time to make provision for emergency calls while considering the needs of ordinary callers is proposed. In this method, called the HTL-E method, all calls are classified as emergency calls or other according to the numbers that are dialed or the terminal numbers that are given in advance to the particular terminals making emergency calls, and only the holding time of other calls is limited. The performance characteristics of the HTL-E method were evaluated using computer simulations. The results showed that it reduced the rates of blocking and forced call termination at handover considerably, without reducing the holding time for emergency calls. The blocking rate was almost equal for emergency and other calls. In addition, the HTL-E method handles fluctuations in the demand for emergency calls flexibly. A simple method of estimating the holding-time limit for other calls, which reduces the blocking rate for emergency and other calls to the normal rate for periods of increased call demand is also presented. The calculated results produced by this method agreed well with the simulation results.
Contract signing is a practical application of the fair exchange of digital signatures. This application used to be realized by directly adopting the results of the fair exchange of signatures, which do not completely meet the requirements of the signing of a secret contract. The assistance of a trusted third party (TTP) and some cryptographic technology are required to allow two parties to exchange their signatures through the network in a fair manner because these two parties potentially may be dishonest or mistrust each other. This paper presents a subtle method of preventing the off-line TTP from gaining the exchanged signature and the corresponding message when a dispute occurs between the two parties wherein the TTP is required to take part in the exchange procedure. An advanced concept, the non-disclosure property, is proposed in order to prevent a party from misusing evidence left during the exchange process. Two approaches, namely the secret divide method and the convertible signature are demonstrated. To satisfy the properties of the traditional paper-based contract signing, the technique of multi-signature scheme is used in the proposed protocols.

This paper presents a new type of wearable teleoperation system that can be applied to the control of a humanoid robot. The proposed system has self-contained computing hardware with a stereo head-mounted display, a microphone, a set of headphones, and a wireless LAN. It also has a mechanism that tracks arm and head motion by using several types of sensors that detect the motion data of an operator, along with a simple force reflection mechanism that uses vibration motors at appropriate joints. For remote tasks, we use intelligent self-sensory feedback and autonomous behavior, such as automatic grasping and obstacle avoidance in a slave robot, and we feed the information back to an operator through a multimodal communication channel. Through this teleoperation system, we successfully demonstrate several teleoperative tasks, including object manipulation and mobile platform control of a humanoid robot.
This paper investigates a modifying orthogonality factor for synchronous DS-CDMA uplink in dispersive Rician multipath fading channels, which reflects upon the effects of specular path power as well as decaying channel characteristics. Using this investigation, the orthogonal factors in indoor environments are evaluated and compared with the various parameters such as decaying factor, line-of-sight component, and the number of multipaths.

Gossip-based reliable broadcast protocols with reasonably weak reliability properties scale well to large groups and degrade system performance gracefully even if node failure or message loss rates increase compared with traditional protocols. However, although many distributed applications require highly steady performance only by allowing causality to be used asynchronously, there is no existing gossip-based protocol offering causally ordered delivery property more lightweight than totally ordered delivery one. This paper presents an application-level broadcast algorithm to guarantee causally-ordered delivery semantics based on peer to peer interaction models for scalability, reasonable reliability and stable throughput. Processes propagate each message with a vector time stamp much like the spread of rumor in society for a fixed number of rounds. Upon receipt of these messages, correct processes immediately deliver the corresponding messages to the application layers in a causal order. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the existing ones in terms of delivery throughput.

A fully Internet-connected business environment is subject to frequent changes. To ordinary customers, online shopping under such a dynamic environment can be frustrating. We propose a new E-commerce service called the CIGMA to assist online customers under such an environment. The CIGMA provides catalog comparison and purchase mediation services over multiple shopping sites for ordinary online customers. The service is based on up-to-date information by reflecting the frequent changes in catalog information instantaneously. It also matches the desire of online customers for fast response. This paper describes the CIGMA along with its architecture and the implementation of a working prototype.

In [1], an algorithm based on phase variations of received pilot symbols was proposed to estimate one of the most important channel parameters, maximum Doppler shift, fd. However, AWGN (Additive white gauss noise) will cause large estimation error in some cases. In order to analyze the influence of noise, we extended the phase probability density function (pdf) in [1] to the scenario with both fading and AWGN, then the estimation error is characterized in closed-form expression. By this error expression, we found that power control will affect the estimator of [1] and we proposed a modification method based on SNR estimation to obtain accurate Doppler shift estimation in moderate low SNRs (signal-to-noise ratio). Simulation results show high accuracy in wide range of velocities and SNRs.

In the move toward higher clock rates and advanced process technologies, designers of the latest electronic products are finding increasing silicon failure with respect to noise. On the other hand, the minimum dimension of patterns on LSIs is much smaller than the wavelength of exposure, making it difficult for LSI manufacturers to obtain high yield. In this paper, we present a solution to reduce power-supply noise in LSI microchips. The proposed design methodology also considers design for manufacturability (DFM) at the same time as power integrity. The method was successfully applied to the design of a system-on-chip (SOC), achieving a 13.1-13.2% noise reduction in power-supply voltage and uniformity of pattern density for chemical mechanical polishing (CMP).

In this paper, we propose an efficient rate and power allocation scheme for multiuser OFDM systems to minimize the total transmit power under the given QoS requirements. We deduce the optimal solution of transmit power minimization problem and develop a suboptimal algorithm with low complexity based on the theoretical analysis. Because of the avoidance of iterative procedure, it is less complex than the existing schemes. The simulation results show that our proposal outperforms the existing schemes and it is very close to the optimal solution.

The relative permittivity and permeability are discontinuous at the grating profile, and the electric and magnetic flux densities are continuous. As for the method of analysis for scattering waves by surface relief gratings placed in conical mounting, the spatial harmonic expansion approach of the flux densities are formulated in detail and the validity of the approach is shown numerically. The present method is effective for uniform regions such as air and substrate in addition to grating layer. The matrix formulations are introduced by using numerical calculations of the matrix eigenvalue problem in the grating region and analytical solutions separated for TE and TM waves in the uniform region are described. Some numerical examples for linearly and circularly polarized incidence show the usefulness of the flux densities expansion approach.

Long running software systems are known to experience an aging phenomenon called software aging, one in which the accumulation of errors during the execution of software leads to performance degradation and eventually results in failure. To counteract this phenomenon a proactive fault management approach, called software rejuvenation, is particularly useful. It essentially involves gracefully terminating an application or a system and restarting it in a clean internal state. In this paper, we evaluate dependability performance of a communication network system with the software rejuvenation under the assumption that the requests arrive according to a Markov modulated Poisson process (MMPP). Three dependability measures, steady-state availability, loss probability of requests and mean response time on tasks, are derived through the hidden Markovian analysis based on the time-based software rejuvenation scheme. In numerical examples, we investigate the sensitivity of some model parameters to the dependability measures.

When a large-size car exists on the ETC lane (Electronic Toll Collection System), there is the possibility that the interference on the adjacent lane occurs by the scattering waves from one. In this paper, we propose a new improvement method which the transparent EM wave absorber is placed between the ETC lane and the adjacent one in order to suppress the scattering waves from a large-size car. Therefore, we design the transparent EM wave absorber which consists of the transparent resistive and conductive films. Then, this absorber is produced, and its reflection and transmission coefficients are evaluated. In addition, its transmittance in optics is evaluated. As the results, the reflectivity of this absorber is obtained lower than -20 dB in the oblique incident angle from 0to 30at 5.8 GHz circular polarized wave, abbreviated as CP wave, and also the transmittivity is obtain lower than -27 dB in the oblique incident angle from 0to 70, respectively. On the other hand, the transmittance in optics is obtained higher than 60%. Moreover, we study experimentally on the ETC system with placing this absorber between the ETC lane and the adjacent one. We measured the distribution of receiving power on the adjacent lane, when a water sprinkler existed on the ETC lane. As a result, it is confirmed that the receiving power on the adjacent lane could be realized lower than -70.5 dBm, and then a new improvement method has proven to be very useful in the ETC system.

A novel scheme for a multi-band power amplifier (PA) that employs a low-loss reconfigurable matching network is presented and discussed. The matching network basically consists of a cascade of single-stub tuning circuits, in which each stub is connected to a transmission line via a Single-Pole-Single-Throw (SPST) switch. By controlling the on/off status of each switch, the matching network works as a band-switchable matching network. Based on a detailed analysis of the influence of non-ideal switches in the matching network, we conceived a new design perspective for the reconfigurable matching network that achieves low loss. A 900/1900-MHz dual-band, 1 W class PA is newly designed following the new design perspective, and fabricated with microelectro mechanical system (MEMS) SPST switches. Owing to the new design and sufficient characteristics of the MEMS switches, the dual-band PA achieves over 60% of the maximum power-added efficiency with an output power for each band exceeding 30 dBm. These results are comparable to the estimated results for a single-band PA. This shows that the proposed scheme provides a band-switchable highly efficient PA that has superior performance compared to the conventional multi-band PA that has a complex structure.
In this paper, we present a game of dice that combines multi-party communication with a tangible interface. The game has been used as a testbed to study typical conversational behavior patterns in interactions between human users and synthetic agents. In particular, we were interested in the question to what extent the interaction with the agent can be considered as natural. As an evaluation criterion, we propose to investigate whether the communicative behaviors of humans differ when conversing with an agent as opposed to conversing with other humans.

Given a set of n stations, the initialization problem is to assign each station a unique identification number, from 1 to n. In the single-hop wireless Networks with collision detection, Nakano and Olariu proposed an algorithm to build a partition tree and solve the problem. In this paper, we shall classify the partition tree into four parts. By reviewing the classification, we find that three ideas can improve the algorithm. We show that it needs 2.88n time slots for solving the problem containing n stations. After applying our three ideas, the number of time slots will be improved to 2.46n.

This paper highlights some of our recent research efforts in designing and evaluating life-like characters that are capable of entertaining affective and social communication with human users. The key novelty of our approach is the use of human physiological information: first, as a method to evaluate the effect of life-like character behavior on a moment-to-moment basis, and second, as an input modality for a new generation of interface agents that we call 'physiologically perceptive' life-like characters. By exploiting the stream of primarily involuntary human responses, such as autonomic nervous system activity or eye movements, those characters are expected to respond to users' affective and social needs in a truly sensitive, and hence effective, friendly, and beneficial way.

In the future network, optical technology will play a stronger role not only for transmission but also for switching. Optical burst switching (OBS) emerged as a promising switching paradigm. It brings together the complementary strengths of optics and electronics. This paper presents the design and implementation of an overlay mode burst-switched photonic network testbed, including its architecture, protocols, algorithms and experiments. We propose a flexible "transceiver + forwarding" OBS node architecture to perform both electronic burst assembly/disassembly and optical burst forwarding. It has been designed to provide class of service (CoS), wavelength selection for local bursts, and transparency to cut-through bursts. The functional modules of OBS control plane and its key design issues are presented, including signaling, routing, and a novel scheduling mechanism with combined contention resolution in space and wavelength domains. Finally, we report the experimental results on functional verification, performance analysis and service demonstration.
