    An improved movement-based registration scheme reduces location update cost on conventional movement-based location update scheme but increases uncertainty of the position of a mobile terminal (MT). The effect of this uncertainty of the MT position on the paging cost of the improved movement-based registration scheme is analyzed. We show that the paging cost of the improved movement-based registration scheme in [2] is underestimated, especially for large values of movement threshold. The result shows that the underestimation cannot be ignored.

  • Fundamental Perspective of Future High Power Devices and Amplifiers for Wireless Communication Systems

    Fundamental perspective of high power devices and amplifiers for use in wireless communication systems are described in this paper. First, high power devices and device modeling techniques are presented, focusing on the emerging device technologies such as wide bandgap devices (GaN, SiC) and SiGe devices. Then the commercially available device, circuit and system simulators for wireless communication applications are introduced. Recent active load-pull measurements have made a remarkable progress in fundamental, harmonic, and envelope frequencies for high efficiency and low distortion designs. In addition, pulsed DC/RF and on wafer load-pull measurements have also become popular, which are briefly reviewed. Finally the advances in high power amplifier design techniques for achieving high efficiency and low distortion are presented.

  • Modeling of DS-CDMA Transmit Power Control in a Fast Fading Channel with Antenna Diversity

    In DS-CDMA mobile radio communications systems, transmit power control (TPC) is indispensable to regulate the variations in the received signal power produced by multipath fading. However, a practical TPC raises and lowers the mobile transmit power only at discrete time instants (the TPC rate is on the order of 1-2 kHz) and by a finite step size of the order of 1 dB. Therefore, TPC cannot completely compensate the received signal power variations and hence, the transmission performance degrades in a fast fading channel. The objective of this paper is to understand how TPC acts in a fast fading channel with antenna diversity reception and, based on this understanding, to model the TPC operation.

    In wireless communications, a smart antenna system utilizes an antenna array to acquire the spatial signatures of transmitted signals. This system uses the difference in the spatial signatures or the direction of arrival (DOA) of signals to correctly obtain the desired signal. This can reduce co-channel interference, mitigate the fading phenomenon caused by multipath transmissions, improve the communication quality and increase the system capacity. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the performance of smart antennas using four beamforming algorithms applied to a wideband code division multiple access (W-CDMA) system. The simulation results show that, based on the same power consumption at the transceiver and using a Rake receiver, a W-CDMA system with a smart antenna can operate at a lower bit error rate at the specific signal to noise ratio (SNR). Moreover, the smart antenna system accommodates more users at the specific signal to interference ratio (SIR), even though a certain angle difference exists between the actual DOAs and the estimated DOAs.

    We propose a new phase interpolator that provides precise fractional phase pulses without the need to adjust circuit constants. The variable phases are produced by detecting the coincidence of two voltages, the ramp wave and the threshold voltage. The new phase interpolator can keep the same ramp wave slope and the same threshold voltage for different output phases. This significantly reduces the power dissipation of the voltage comparator. This phase interpolator can be applied to various timing circuits and clock generators, such as frequency multipliers and direct digital synthesizers. We present a novel frequency doubler, a novel frequency tripler, a direct digital synthesizer (DDS), and a novel wideband DDS (WDDS) as applications of our new phase interpolator, which uses 0.35-mm CMOS process technology. Experimental results confirm the functionarity of the new phase interpolator. An 8-bit complete DDS IC dissipates only 2.1 mA at a 50-MHz clock rate and a supply voltage of 2.8 V.

    The ATM-ABR service category provides minimum cell rate (MCR) guarantees and robust connections even with insufficient network resources. Recently proposed rate-management algorithms for supporting multimedia applications over ABR mainly aim at minimizing the cell loss and delay. However, jitter is also an important element of QoS for multimedia applications. In this paper, we focus our attention on the arrival point of the critical cell corresponding to the end of data packet and propose a simple cell scheduling scheme for source node to reduce the jitter on application level over the ATM-ABR service class. In our proposed method, critical cells are delayed intentionally and the packet stream at application level becomes smooth. We verify the effectiveness of our proposed algorithm by an analytical model and simulation. From those results, we find that our proposed scheduling algorithm is effective in reducing the application level jitter even when the tagged cell stream is transmitted along the path with multiple nodes.

    A very low-power, high-speed flash A/D converter front-end composed of a new latched comparator was developed. We established a butterfly sorting technique to guarantee the monotonicity of the converter. The 6-bit A/D front-end achieves a speed of 100 Msps and dynamic range of 33 dB with power consumption of only 7 mW at the supply voltage of 1 V, and the butterfly sorter guarantees 6-bit monotonicity with an extra power consumption of 1 mW.

    We describe a new automated method for detecting embedded objects in the ultrasonic non-destructive testing (NDT) system. A-scan waves collected by our developed system are converted into a B-scan image. The sensor system has the noise signals independent from targets to be detected. In the ultrasonic NDT system, the signals are due to disturbing of echoes produced by the transducers and multiple reflections. These signals are called inherent wave. This paper first proposes the estimation method of the inherent wave from the B-scan image. After this method subtracts the inherent wave, the resultant image (suppression image) is considered as the image consisting of only echoes from the embedded objects. Second, analysis of the intensity histogram of the suppression image leads the candidate points of embedded objects. Finally, fuzzy if-then rules can represent information on distribution of the intensity histogram and the homogeneous intensity levels of the objects. Evaluated degrees from the inference results can demonstrate the embedded objects. The method was applied to concrete members with reinforcing bars, resin tubes and steel pipes. The experimental results showed that this method was able to automatically detect the embedded objects with high accuracy and to display the location of embedded objects.

    This paper presents the results of field experiments on the pilot symbol assisted (PSA) coherent multistage interference canceller (COMSIC) receiver in the direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) reverse link. The implemented COMSIC receiver comprising three cancellation stages employs PSA channel estimation and replica generation of multiple access interference (MAI) of other users. The experimental results demonstrate that the COMSIC receiver associated with antenna diversity reception and fast transmission power control (TPC) exhibits effectiveness in suppressing severe MAI in actual multipath fading channels. The transmission power of a mobile station (MS) when the COMSIC receiver is employed at a base station (BS) is reduced by approximately 2.0 and 4.0 dB compared to that with the matched filter (MF)-based Rake receiver when the ratios of the target signal energy per bit-to-interference power spectrum density ratio (Eb/I0) of the desired user to the target user are Δtarget= -6 and -9 dB, respectively. Furthermore, for the COMSIC receiver, the transmission power of a MS at the average bit error rate (BER) of 10-3 with antenna diversity is decreased by approximately 7.5 and 11 dB compared to that without antenna diversity when the Δtarget values are -6 and -9 dB, respectively.

    Many services on ITS (Intelligent transport system) have been proposed, which include the ETC (electronic toll collection) system. In this paper, we first present some assumptions we can assume on ITS. Then we construct a light electronic ticket system which is suitable for payment on ITS. In our system, (1) only two moves are required to use a ticket, (2) the shop can check the validity of the ticket with only a few applying of hash functions. Further, we prove that forgery of a ticket by a user or a shop is detected with almost one probability.

    Randomly addressed polling was proposed as a multiple access control protocol for wireless local area networks (LANs). However, the protocol has difficulties in supporting real-time services such as voice transmission. We propose a reservation scheme and make it possible to support real-time services. The scheme is described in detail. Efficiency and average access delay are analyzed.

    This paper proposes a new blind algorithm effective for multiuser detection with an adaptive array antenna. The conventional blind algorithm, known as the Constant Modulus Algorithm (CMA), has two major drawbacks: (i) the convergence speed is not sufficiently fast for usual applications in mobile communications, and (ii) the algorithm is very likely to lock on the path with the largest received power, which means the signal with the second largest power can hardly be extracted. This paper introduces the Recursive Least Squares algorithm for CMA (RLS-CMA) in order to speed the convergence up, and additionally introduces the concept of the orthogonal projection into CMA so as to extract signals with weak power. The proposed CMA with Orthogonal Projection (CMA-OP) sequentially calculates the weight vector of each user under a constraint that the weight vector should be orthogonal to the estimated array response vectors of previously extracted users. Computer simulations demonstrate that the proposed scheme can operate properly in the Rayleigh fading channels under the two-user condition.

    This paper proposes a new method to estimate the channel impulse response for Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) mobile radio transmission. The method employs the Recursive Least Squares (RLS) algorithm so as to exploit the correlations in frequency and time domains, and can improve the estimation accuracy. It is also applicable to both the regular and scattered pilot schemes. Computer simulations demonstrate effectiveness of the method applied to the scattered pilot scheme.

    This paper investigates transmission power control for packet transmissions by using code division multiplexing (CDM) in the downlink common (shared) channel of CDMA cellular packet systems and proposes a transmission power control scheme to improve throughput performance and geographical fairness of communication services. In the proposed scheme, downlink transmission power is controlled based on the signal-to-interference ratio predicted at mobile stations. Throughput performance and transmission delay are evaluated under perfect power control conditions. Simulation results show that by using site diversity technique the proposed scheme improves the downlink throughput for light load conditions and geographical fairness for all offered channel loads under both non-fading and fading environments.

    At present, in the Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) field, research continues In-The-Vehicle Communication (ITVC), Inter-Vehicle Communication (IVC), Road-to-Vehicle Communication (RVC), etc. All information communications technology, especially radio-communications technology, was applied. For example, wireless 1394 is used in ITVC, millimeter-wave communication is used in IVC, and Radio on Fiber (ROF) communication technology is used in RVC. However, it is actually very difficult to design for and accommodate all of these systems. This research, to simplify a design, equipment, structure, etc. of ITCV, IVC, and RVC, utilizes a wireless Bluetooth technology system which is the global radio-communications standard which is capturing the spotlight from various fields. In recent years, demand for a radio-communications service which can be used anywhere is increasing. Furthermore, demand for information service by the Internet is also increasing. This paper proposes simulation of Bluetooth wireless communication for ITS field such as ITVC, IVC and RVC system combined to the global Internet connection. Of course, there are many aspects should be thought carefully when the simulation system will be applied to the ITS infrastructures later. On this paper we have been designing the whole system and the evaluation of the simulation have been testing carefully.

  • An Adaptive MSINR Filter for Co-channel Interference Suppression in DS/CDMA Systems

    Many types of adaptive algorithms based on the MMSE criterion for co-channel interference suppression in DS/CDMA systems have been studied in great detail. However, these algorithms have such a problem that the training speed is greatly dropped under the strong near-far problem. In this paper, we propose and analyze an adaptive filter based on the Maximum Signal to Interference and Noise Ratio (MSINR) criterion, called adaptive MSINR filter. This filter is basically equivalent to the adaptive filter based on the MMSE criterion. However, due to the structual difference, the convergence speed is greatly improved. Specifically, the de-spreading vector in this filter is so renewed as to maximize the Signal to Interference and Noise Ratio (SINR) by minimizing the de-spread interference and noise power under the condition that the de-spread desired signal power keeps constant. So the proposed filter uses the estimated interference and noise signal calculated by subtracting the estimated desired signal from the received signal. It is just the reason why the adaptive MSINR filter shows remarkable convergence speed. And to satisfy the constant signal power condition, the projection matrix onto the orthogonal complement of the desired signal space is used for the de-spreading vector. For the proposed filter, we analyze the convergence modes and also investigate the de-spread interfernce and noise power for calculating the theoretical SINR curve. Then, we conduct some computer simulations in order to show the difference between this filter and the conventional one in terms of the SINR convergence speed. As the result, we confirm that the adaptive filter based on the MSINR criterion achieves significant progress in terms of the SINR convergence speed.

    The purpose of this paper is to derive a novel fractionally spaced Bayesian decision feedback equalizer (FS-BDFE). The oversampling technique changes single input single output (SISO) linear channel to single input multiple output (SIMO) linear channel. The Bayesian decision variable in the FS-BDFE is defined as the product of Bayesian decision variables in the Bayesian decision feedback equalizers (BDFE) corresponding to each channels of the SIMO. It can be shown that the FS-BDFE has less decision error probability than the conventional BDFE. The effectiveness of the proposed equalizer is also demonstrated by the computer simulation.

    When people want to exchange digital money and digital data over the Internet like a market, privacy for the participant's behavior, security against malicious users and fairness for matching must be assured. We propose a new concept "Matching Oblivious Transfer," which can match valuable digital data with hiding the price suggested by participant and securely deliver the digital data to the matched participant. Then we propose a protocol for some general matching rules in which once a participant sends an order to the market, no interaction between each participant and the market is needed.

    In narrow band power-line communication (PLC) systems, which use frequency band below a few hundred kHz, the noise on power-line is non-white and non-stationary. Under such environment, the performance of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex (OFDM) modulation system is analyzed, and time and frequency dependence of bit error rate (BER) is clarified. In addition, the possibility of performance improvement with the symbol level repetition coding employing cyclo-stationary feature of power-line noise is presented.
