    In order to enhance the energy transfer efficiency in a rectangular Cherenkov laser, we propose to vary properly the permittivity of a loaded dielectric in the transverse direction. With the aid of particle simulation, we investigate the amplification characteristics of the rectangular Cherenkov laser with a dielectric permittivity varied in the transverse direction, demonstrating the effectiveness of our proposal for efficiency enhancement.

  • A Compositional Approach for Constructing Communication Services and Protocols

    The complexity of designing communication protocols has lead researchers to develop various techniques for designing and verifying protocols. One of the most important techniques is a compositional technique. Using a compositional technique, a large and complex protocol is designed and verified by composing small and simple protocols which are easy to handle, design and verify. Unlike the other compositional approaches, we propose compositional techniques for simultaneously composing service specifications and protocol specifications based on Formal Description Techniques (FDTs) called LOTOS. The proposed techniques consider alternative, sequential, interrupt and parallel composition of service specifications and protocol specifications. The composite service specification and the composite protocol specification preserve the original behaviour and the correctness properties of individual service specifications and protocol specifications. We use the weak bisimulation equivalence (), to represent the correctness properties between the service specification and the protocol specification. When a protocol specification is weak bisimulation equivalent to a service specification, the protocol satisfies all the logical properties of a communication protocol as well as provides the services that are specified in the service specification.

    Weighted summation (W-SUM) operation of multi-input signals plays an important role in signal processing, image compression and communication systems. Conventional digital LSI implementation for the massive high-speed W-SUM operations usually consumes a lot of power, and the power dissipation linearly increases with the operational frequencies. Analog or digital-analog mixed technology may provide a solution to this problem, but the large scale integration for analog circuits especially for digital-analog mixed circuits faces some difficulties in terms of circuit design, mixed-simulation, physical layout and anti-noises. To practically integrate large scale analog or digital-analog mixed circuits, the simplicity of the analog circuits are usually required. In this paper, we present a solution to realize the parallel W-SUM operations of multi-input analog signals based on our developed digital-controlled analog operational circuits. The major features of the proposed circuits include the simplicity in the circuitry architecture and the advantage in the dissipation power, which make it easy to be designed and to be integrated in large scale. To improve the design efficiency, a Top-Down design approach for mixed LSI implementation is proposed. The proposed W-SUM circuits and the Top-Down design approach have been practically used in the LSI implementation for a series of programmable finite impulse response (FIR) filters and matched filters applied in adaptive signal processing and the mobile communication systems based on the wideband code division multiple access (W-CDMA) technology.

    An approximate formula is proposed for the equivalent susceptance of a circular iris in a parallel plate waveguide when the TEM mode cylindrical wave is incident from the center of the iris. Schwinger's variational method for a linear iris is generalized to the cylindrical case, and an approximate closed form formula is obtained which recovers the result of the linear iris when the radius of the circular iris is sufficiently larger than the wavelength. For verification of the formula, an exact integral equation is formulated and solved numerically by Galerkin's method. A comparison between them shows good agreement.

  • A Hardware/Software Cosynthesis System for Digital Signal Processor Cores

    This paper proposes a hardware/software cosynthesis system for digital signal processor cores and a hardware/software partitioning algorithm which is one of the key issues for the system. The target processor has a VLIW-type core which can be composed of a processor kernel, multiple data memory buses (X-bus and Y-bus), hardware loop units, addressing units, and multiple functional units. The processor kernel includes five pipeline stages (RISC-type kernel) or three pipeline stages (DSP-type kernel). Given an application program written in the C language and a set of application data, the system synthesizes a processor core by selecting an appropriate kernel (RISC-type or DSP-type kernel) and required hardware units according to the application program/data and the hardware costs. The system also generates the object code for the application program and a software environment (compiler and simulator) for the processor core. The experimental results demonstrate that the system synthesizes processor cores effectively according to the features of an application program and the synthesized processor cores execute most application programs with the minimum number of clock cycles compared with several existing processors.

  • An Algorithm to Position Fictitious Terminals on Borders of Divided Routing Areas

    A parallel detailed router based on the area division is one of important tools to overcome the increase of CPU time required for routing of a very large multilayer SOG. In order to conduct routing in each divided area independently, fictitious terminals are introduced on the border of each divided area, and routes connected to the fictitious terminals are concatenated to complete the final detailed routes. In this paper, we consider a problem how to position such fictitious terminals on borders, so as to make each detailed routing in a divided area easy. We formulate this problem as a minimum cost assignment problem, and propose an iterative improvement algorithm. We also give some experimental results which indicate the effectiveness of the algorithm.

    Recently, it is widely known that the partial response maximum-likelihood (PRML) system has attracted much attention as one of indispensable signal processing technique for achieving high density digital magnetic recording. But, the performance of PRML system is degraded by many undesirable causes in recording channel. For improving the performance, it is desirable to use any high order PRML system or high rate code. Our proposed two-track recording method increases the coding rate over 1, and contributes to decrease these degradation effects. The recording code in our system adopts a turbo code which provides a substantial near-ML performance by the suboptimum iterative decoding algorithm. In this paper, the turbo coded class four partial response (PR4) systems using the rate 4/6, 8/10 and 16/18 codes for high density two track digital magnetic recording are proposed. The error rate performance of the proposed system is obtained by computer simulation taking account of the partial erasure, which is one of nonlinear distortions at high densities. The performance of our system is compared with that of the conventional NRZ coded PR4ML system. The result shows that the proposed system is hardly affected by partial erasure and keeps good performance in high density recording. In especial, the proposed system using the rate 16/18 turbo code can achieve a bit error rate of 10-4 with SNR of approximately 12.2 dB less than the conventional NRZ coded PR4ML systems at a normalized linear density of 3.

    This paper shows the method of theoretical analysis for the bit error probability of the trellis-coded partial response continuous phase modulation (TCM-PR-CPM) over the correlated Rician fast frequency nonselective fading channel. In the analysis, the fading correlation of the channel and the effect due to finite interleaver are taken into account. By applying the method to the rate 1/2 (7, 2) trellis code with the raised cosine pulse of length 2 (2RC) partial response signaling, we show that the tighter upper bounds of the bit error rate are obtained than those in the preceding report.

    Experiment is reported of enhanced backscattering of light in binary and ternary suspensions of rutile and/or alumina particles. With a conventional CCD camera system for observing the phenomena, the angular line shape and the enhancement factor were agreed with the theoretically predicted curve and value. Observation of the angular distribution scattered at the backscattered direction supported the hypothesis proposed by Pine et al. , in which the transport mean free path of the polydisperse mixture can be expressed in terms of summing its reciprocal values weighted over the particle sizes.

  • An Evaluation of Visual Fatigue in 3-D Displays: Focusing on the Mismatching of Convergence and Accommodation

    In this paper, we describe an experimental evaluation of visual fatigue in a binocular disparity type 3-D display system. To evaluate this fatigue, we use a subjective assessment method and focus on mismatching between convergence and accommodation, which is a major weakness of binocular disparity 3-D displays. For this subjective assessment, we use a newly-developed binocular disparity 3-D display system with a compensation function for accommodation. Because this equipment only allowed us to compare the terms of the mismatching itself, the evaluation is more accurate than similar previous works.

    In this paper, we present simulation algorithms among enhanced mesh models. The enhanced mesh models here include reconfigurable mesh and mesh with multiple broadcasting. A reconfigurable mesh (RM) is a processor array that consists of processors arranged to a 2-dimensional grid with a reconfigurable bus system. The bus system can be used to dynamically obtain various interconnection patterns among the processors during the execution of programs. A horizontal-vertical RM (HV-RM) is obtained from the general RM model, by restricting the network topology it can take to the ones in which each bus segment must be along row or column. A mesh with multiple broadcasting (MWMB) is an enhanced mesh, which has additional broadcasting buses endowed to every row and column. We present two algorithms:1) an algorithm that simulates a HV-RM of size nn time-optimally in θ(n) time on a MWMB of size nn, and 2) an algorithm that simulates a RM of size nn in θ(log2 n) time on a HV-RM of size nn. Both algorithms use a constant number of storage in each processor. Furthermore, we show that a RM of size nn can be simulated in θ((n/m)2 log n log m) time on a HV-RM of size mm, in θ ((n/m)2 m log n log m) time on a MWMB of size mm (m < n). These simulations use θ((n/m)2) storage in each processor, which is optimal.

  • Newly Found Visual Illusions and 3-D Display

    Human visual system can perceive 3-D structure of an object by binocular disparity, gradient of illumination (shading), occlusion, textures, perspective and so forth. Among them, binocular disparity seems to be the essentially important cues for the 3-D space perception and it is used widely for displaying 3-D visual circumstances such as in VR (virtual reality) system or 3-D TV. Visual illusions seem to be one of the phenomena which are purely reflecting the mechanism of human visual system. In the recent several years, the authors found several new types of 3-D visual illusions with binocular viewing. Entire 3-D illusory object including volume perception, transparency, dynamic illusions can be perceived only from the visual stimuli of disparity given by some inducing objects arranged with suitable relations. In this report, the authors introduced these newly found visual illusions and made some considerations on the human visual mechanism of 3-D perception and on their exploitation for new effective techniques in 3-D display. They introduced especially on the visual effect in two kinds of arrangement with occlusion and sustaining relationship between the illusory object and inducing objects. In the former case, the inducing objects which provide the stimuli were named as occlusion cues and classified into two types: contour occlusion cues and bulky occlusion cues. In the later case, those inducing objects were named as sustaining cues and a 3-D fully transparent illusory object was perceived. The perception was just like imagined from the scenes of the actions and positions of the pantomimists; then this phenomena was named as "Mime (Pantomime) Effect. " According to the positions of sustaining cues, they played different actions in this perception, and they are classified into three types: front sustaining cues, side sustaining cues and back sustaining cues. In addition, dynamic fusion and separation of volumetrical illusory objects were perceived when the visual stimuli were moving continuously between two structurally different conditions. Then the hysteresis was recognized in geometrical position between the fusion and separation. The authors believe that the occlusion cues and sustaining cues introduced in this paper could be effective clues for exploiting the new techniques for 3-D display.

  • Parameters and System Order Estimation Using Differential Filters and Resultant

    This paper deals with a method of estimating the parameters and the order of a linear system using differential digital filters and the resultant. From the observed signals of the input and output of an objective system, we extract the differential signals from the zero order to an appropriate high order with the same phase characteristics, using several digital filters. On the assumption that the system order is known, we estimate the parameters of the transfer function and evaluate the estimation error bounds. We propose a criterion function generated by the product of the highest order coefficients and the resultant of the numerator and denominator of the estimated transfer function. Applying this criterion function, we can estimate the order of the objective system. The threshold corresponding to this criterion function is evaluated from the deviation in the frequency characteristics of the used differential filters and the error bound of the estimated parameters. In order to demonstrate the propriety of the proposed method, some numerical simulations are presented.

  • Pattern Formation in Reaction-Diffusion Enzyme Transistor Circuits

    This paper explores a possibility of constructing massively parallel molecular computing systems using molecular electronic devices called enzyme transistors. The enzyme transistor is, in a sense, an artificial catalyst which selects a specific substrate molecule and transforms it into a specific product. Using this primitive function, various active continuous media for signal transfer/processing can be realized. Prominent examples discussed in this paper are: (i) Turing pattern formation and (ii) excitable wave propagation in a two-dimensional enzyme transistor array. This paper demonstrates the potential of enzyme transistors for creating reaction-diffusion dynamics that performs useful computations in a massively parallel fashion.

  • Modular Approach for Solving Nonlinear Knapsack Problems

    This paper develops an algorithm based on the Modular Approach to solve singly constrained separable discrete optimization problems (Nonlinear Knapsack Problems). The Modular Approach uses fathoming and integration techniques repeatedly. The fathoming reduces the decision space of variables. The integration reduces the number of variables in the problem by combining several variables into one variable. Computational experiments for "hard" test problems with up to 1000 variables are provided. Each variable has up to 1000 integer values.

    This paper proposes applications of a code-division multiplexing technique to VLSI systems free from interconnection problems. We employ a pseudo-random orthogonal m-sequence carrier as a multiplexable information carrier to achieve efficient data transmission. Using orthogonal property of m-sequences, we can multiplex several computational activities into a single circuit, and execute in parallel using multiplexed data transmission with reduced interconnection. Also, randomness of m-sequences offers the high tolerance to interference (jamming), and suppression of dynamic range of signals while maintaining a sufficient signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). We demonstrate application examples of multiplex computing circuits, neural networks, and spread-spectrum image processing to show the advantages.

  • On-Line Control of Discrete Event Systems with a Maximally Controllable and Observable Sublanguage

    Recently, many on-line control methods of partially observed discrete event systems(DES's) have been proposed. This paper proposes an algorithm for on-line control based on a supervisor under complete observation. It is shown that DES's controlled by the proposed on-line controller generate maximally controllable and observable sublanguages which include the supremal normal sublanguages. Moreover, computational complexity of the proposed algorithm is polynomial with respect to the numbers of the unobservable events and the state of the supervisor under complete observation.

  • Blind Signal Extraction of Arbitrarily Distributed, but Temporally Correlated Signals -- A Neural Network Approach

    In this paper, we discuss a neural network approach for blind signal extraction of temporally correlated sources. Assuming autoregressive models of source signals, we propose a very simple neural network model and an efficient on-line adaptive algorithm that extract, from linear mixtures, a temporally correlated source with an arbitrary distribution, including a colored Gaussian source and a source with extremely low value (or even zero) of kurtosis. We then combine these extraction processing units with deflation processing units to extract such sources sequentially in a cascade fashion. Theory and simulations show that the proposed neural network successfully extracts all arbitrarily distributed, but temporally correlated source signals from linear mixtures.

    A partial buffer sharing scheme is proposed as loss-priority control for a finite buffer with batch Poisson inputs under a whole batch acceptance rule. Customer and batch loss probabilities for high- and low-priority customers are derived under this batch acceptance rule using a supplementary variable method. A comparison of the partial buffer sharing scheme and a system without loss-priority control is made in terms of admissible offered load. Whole batch acceptance and partial batch acceptance rules are also compared in terms of admissible offered load.

  • On Trapped Motions and Separatrix Structures of a Two Degree of Freedom Swing Equation System

    We report relations between invariant manifolds of saddle orbits (Lyapunov family) around a saddle-center equilibrium point and lowest periodic orbits on the two degree of freedom swing equation system. The system consists of two generators operating onto an infinite bus. In this system, a stable equilibrium point represents the normal operation state, and to understand its basin structure is important in connection with practical situations. The Lyapunov families appear under conservative conditions and their invariant manifolds constitute separatrices between trapped and divergent motions. These separatrices continuously deform and become basin boundaries, if changing the system to dissipative one, so that to investigate those manifolds is meaningful. While, in the field of two degree of freedom motions, systems with saddle loops to a saddle-center are well studied, and existence of transverse homoclinic structure of separatrix manifolds is reported. However our investigating system has no such loops. It is interesting what separatrix structure exists without trivial saddle loops. In this report, we focus on above invariant manifolds and lowest periodic orbits which are foliated for the Hamiltonian level.
