To provide personal, intelligent, and multimedia services through a mobile communications network, a Mobile Service Control Point (M-SCP) was developed, which performs both the location register and service control functions. The M-SCP was constructed on a common platform to allow quick introduction of new services. Software techniques to reduce the frequency of process-switching, assign the highest priority to real-time tasks, and operate a multiple-CPU structure provide faster real-time processing. This is confirmed by computer simulation and research in the field.

A design of a high power laser structure is presented which is based on an increase of the cavity length as well as a maximization of the stripe width. This requires a low value for the modal attenuation coefficent and a low optical confinement factor. A model is presented from which the modal gain, the confinement factor, the active region thickness, the stripe width, the length and the reflection coefficients can be calculated. A variant for all design parameters needed to reach 1 W emission in the fundamental lateral mode is given. These values are used to design the epitaxial structure.

Kumar and Billinton have presented a new technique for obtaining the steady-state probabilities from a flow graph based on Markov model. By examining the graph and choosing suitable input and output nodes, the steady-state probabilities can be obtained directly by using the flow graph. In this paper this graphical technique is applied for a k-out-of-n: G repairable system. Consequently a new derivation way of the formulae for the steady-state availability and MTBF is obtained.

A new recursive method for obtaining the mean waiting time in a polling system with general service order and gated service discipline is proposed. The analytical approach used to obtain the mean waiting time is via an imbedded Markov chain and a new recursive method is used to obtain the moments of pseudocycle time which are parameters in the formula for the mean waiting time. This method is computationally tractable, so the analytical results can cover a wide range of applications. Simulations are also conducted to verify the validity of the analysis.

In the actual acoustic environment, the stochastic process exhibits various non-Gaussian distribution forms, and there exist potentially various nonlinear correlations in addition to the linear correlation between time series. In this study, a nonlinear ARMA model is proposed, based on the Bayes' theorem, where no artificially pre-established regression function model is assumed between time series, while reflecting hierarchically all of those various correlation informations. The proposed method is applied to the actual data of road traffic noise and its practical usefulness is verified.

The present study describes using the state transition type of drawing understanding framework to construct a multi-purpose drawing understanding system. This new system employs an understanding process that complies with the understanding rules, which are easily obtained by the user. The same set of user-provided rules must be used for the same type of target drawings, but for slightly different ones, fine tuning is required to obtain understanding rules. To overcome this inherent drawback in constructing drawing understanding systems, we extended the system using a newly constructed understanding rule generating support system. The resultant integrated system is based on a man-machine cooperation type interface, and can automatically generate rules from user-provided simple interactions using a graphical user interace (GUI). To obtain efficient rule generation, the system employs an inductive inference method as a learning algorithm. Map-drawing experiments were successfully carried out, and an evaluation based on a rule leaning error criterion subsequently revealed an efficient rule generation process.

This paper discusses a common channel signaling system in which multiple micro-switching systems can converse as though configured like a conventional centralized switching system. A micro-switching system is a switching system whose main functions are integrated on a chip, like a microprocessor. Progress in MOS technology will soon make micro-switching systems possible, and their small scale and economy will allow subscriber switching systems to be distributed closer to subscribers. This will allow shorter subscriber loops, so subscriber networks will be able to reuse existing metallic lines as H1 (1.544/2.048Mb/s)-class subscriber loops. Economical micro-switching systems and reuse of existing network resources will contribute to the establishment H0 (384kb/s)-ISDN, so that every subscriber will be able to enjoy multimedia communications through HO-calls as simply as using present telephones. Four alternative signaling network architectures are examined, classified by arrangement of their signaling transfer junctions and signaling links, and a new signaling system featuring cell-based transfer functions is proposed. This is suitable for a distributed micro-switching-system network in order to minimize the figures of merit, which collectively estimate network cost and signaling delay.

This paper discusses the potential benefits of H0-based ISDN. By providing widespread H0 (384kb/s) call services, much like today's telephone systems, it should be possible to bring multimedia public communication services to the general public. Small distributed switching systems and reuse of existing metallic loops will contribute to its economical construction and rapid expansion into general use. System-on-a-chip technology, expected to appear soon, will make the necessary small switching systems cost-effective. The short loops resulting from the distribution will allow Hl-band (1.5/2.0Mb/s) metallic loops to be used. In terms of function, the distributed switching nodes will permit node-by-node customization, which will make switching systems simple and flexible. The proposed node-by-node customization will allow subscribers in each different node to choose they prefer. H0-based ISDN will provide various type of nodes, supporting various types of subscriber loops, whereas present public networks enforce standardized subscriber loops. Furthermore, when customized subscriber switching systems accommodate star-LAN interfaces as subscriber loops, the public network will be able to provide LAN services in a closed area as part of the public network services. The LAN users will be able to converse with ordinary residential subscribers through H0-calls. This will lead to the integration of LANs and public networks.

When measuring the ejection fraction for the evaluation of the ventricular pumping function by means of the thermodilution technique, the slow response a conventional thermistor has caused it to be considered unsuitable, and fast thermistors have been proposed as an alternative. However, in this paper we propose improving the time-domain response of a conventional thermistor using a signal processing technique composed of a series of first-order high-pass filters which is known as the natural observation system. We considered the rise time of the thermistor in response to a step temperature change to effect correction for the measurement of the ejection fraction. The coefficients of the natural observation system were calculated by minimizing the square error between the step-response signal of the thermistor and the band-limited reference signal. In an experiment using a model ventricle, the thermodilution curve obtained from a conventional thermistor was improved using the proposed technique, thus enabling successful measurement of the ejection fraction of the ventricles.

We report the dispersion of two-photon absorption (TPA) coefficient, (β), in polydiacetylene (12, 8) thin film waveguides in the wavelength range less than the one-photon band-gap with a 100 femtosecond mode-locked Ti: Sapphire laser pulses. The TPA coefficient was found to be 4 cm/GW for TE polarization at 900 nm (1.38 eV) by taking into account a Gaussian intensity distribution as well as a temporal pulse shape. We observed a sharp resonance in β above the first one-photon allowed transition with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 90 meV.

Operation characteristics of tapered-waveguide traveling wave semiconductor laser amplifier (TTW-SLA) are calculated in terms of quasi adiabatic single mode propagation, signal gain and saturation output power, device efficiency(the efficiency of conversion between the electrical and amplified optical power), and amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) power, and their dependences on the shape of the taper are compared for linear, quadratic, Gaussian and exponential functions, It was found that in the allowed quasi adiabatic single mode propagation condition, linear and Gaussian TTW-SLA have higher saturation output power property, while the exponential TTW-SLA has higher device efficiency property and lower ASE noise of about 0.1 times that of a broad type TW-SLA.

The origin of and a method of enhancing the Optical Beam Induced Resistance Change (OBIRCH) signal for defect observation in VLSI metal interconnections is discussed based on a numerical analysis of three-dimensional thermal conduction and experimental results. The numerical analysis shows that the OBIRCH signal originates from a slight increase in the resistance of the metal line caused by laser beam heating and that its effect is influenced by the temperature of the metal layer. Both simulations and experimental results suggest that cooling the sample is preferable to detect the OBIRCH signal. The decrease in the total resistance of the metal line without any change in the amount of the resistance increase under laser illumination is found to be the main cause of the OBIRCH signal enhancement under low temperature measurement.

Connectionless service for LANs interconnection will be provided in ATM networks at an early stage of B-ISDN era. This service will be provided on connection oriented mode at ATM technology. To perform this service, ATM connections using the dedicated bandwidth for this service are established semi-permanently between the nodes accommodating LANs. On these ATM connections, connectionless service among LANs is provided. It is important for private networks to utilize this bandwidth efficiently for reducing communication cost. In this paper, the architecture to provide connectionless service in private networks is described. Next, the allocation schemes of the bandwidth for this service and their performance are considered. We discuss the following schemes and compare them. One scheme is to establish semi-permanent ATM connections between the nodes with LAN interfaces. The bandwidth for each connection is individually assigned between these nodes. In another scheme, CLSFs (Connection-Less Service Functions) are introduced for connectionless service and connections are established via CLSFs. We show the latter scheme is superior because it brings out the effectiveness of statistical multiplexing of ATM technology and it leads to the reduction of the allocated bandwidth.

A local area network (LAN) can now provide high-speed data communications in a local area environment to establish distributed processing among personal computers and workstations, and the need for interconnecting LANs, which are geographically distributed, is naturally arising. Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) technology has been widely recognized as a promising way to provide the high-speed wide area networks (WAN) for Broadband Integrated Services Digital Network (B-ISDN), and the commercial service offerings are expected in the near future. The ATM network seems to have a capability as a backbone network for interconnecting LANs, and the LAN interconnection is expected to be the first service in ATM networks. However, there remain some technical challenges for this purpose; one of the main difficulties in LAN interconnection is the support of connectionless traffic by the ATM network, which is basically a connection-oriented network. Another one is the way of achieving the very high-speed data transmission over the ATM network. In this paper, we first discuss a LAN internetworking methodology based on the current technology. Then, the recent deployments of LAN interconnection methods through B-ISDN are reviewed.

New critical-dimension controlling technique of off-axis illumination for aperiodic patterns has been developed. By means of arranging not-imaging additional pattern near 0.25 micron isolated patterns, the depth of focus of an isolated pattern was improved as well as the periodic patterns. Simulation and experimental results were verified on a 0.48 numerical-aperture, KrF excimer laser stepper. Using new deep-ultra-violet hardening technique for chemically amplified positive resist, the critical dimension loss of resist pattern was prevented. 0.25 micron design rule pattern was obtained with excellent mask linearity without critical-dimension-loss. The combination techniques are achieved quarter micron design rule complex circuit pattern layouts.

A new kind of optical local area network (LAN), using a demand assign wavelength division multiple access (DA-WDMA) scheme, has been proposed. The proposed LAN consists of two parts; an ordinary standardized LAN and an overlaid network using wavelength division (WD) channels. The proposed network can provide bit-rate independent communication channels on the ordinary LAN without limiting the capacities for the other channels. It also exhibits upgrade possibilities from present standardized networks. An access controller, which consists of software in addition to the ordinary LAN controller, a digital signal processor (DSP) etc., was developed for DA-WDMA control. The network node operation has been demonstrated using guided-wave acousto-optic (AO) mode converters as a tunable wavelength add-drop multiplexer (ADM).

It has become more important to shorten development periods of high performance computer systems and their LSIs. During debugging of computer prototypes, logic designers request very frequent LSI refabrication to change logic circuits and to add some functions in spite of their extensive logic simulation by several GFLOPS supercomputers. To meet these demands, an automated on-chip direct wiring modification system has been developed, which enables wire-cut and via-digging by a precise focused ion beam machine, and via-filling and jumper-writing by a laser CVD machine, directly on pre-redesign (original) chips. This modification system was applied to LSI reworks during the development of Hitachi large scale computers M-880 and S-3800, and contributed to shorten system debugging period by four to six months.
