We prepared a bR thin film by the wire-bar coating technique, and investigated the transient photo-current characteristics of the bR photocell. The transient photo-current signal of bR photocells prepared by the wire-bar coating technique and the dip coating technique was compared. An almost identical transient photo-current signal intensity was obtained both for the wire-bar coating technique and dip coating technique, while the thickness of bR thin film prepared by the wire-bar coating technique is slightly thinner than that prepared by the dip-coating technique. Transparent conductive oxide dependence of the transient photo-current signal is almost the same dependence for the bR photocells with a bR thin film prepared by both techniques. Application of the wire-bar coating technique is significant from the viewpoints of the bR's sample consumption as well as simplicity of sample preparation.

Compact and room-temperature operable terahertz emitting devices have been proposed using a semiconductor coupled multilayer cavity that consists of two functional cavity layers and three distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) multilayers. Two cavity modes with an optical frequency difference in the terahertz region are realized since two cavities are coupled by the intermediate DBR multilayer. In the proposed device, one cavity is used as the active layer for two-color lasing in the near-infrared region by current injection and the other is used as the second-order nonlinear optical medium for difference-frequency generation of the two-color fundamental laser light. The control of the nonlinear polarization by face-to-face bonding of two epitaxial wafers with different orientations is quite effective to achieve bright terahertz emission from the coupled cavity. In this study, two-color emission by optical excitation was measured for the wafer-bonded GaAs/AlGaAs coupled multilayer cavity containing self-assembled InAs quantum dots (QDs). We found that optical loss at the bonding interface strongly affects the two-color emission characteristics when the bonding was performed in the middle of the intermediate DBR multilayer. The effect was almost eliminated when the bonding position was carefully chosen by considering electric field distributions of the two modes. We also fabricated the current-injection type devices using the wafer-bonded coupled multilayer cavities. An assemble of self-assembled QDs is considered to be desirable as the optical gain medium because of the discrete nature of the electronic states and the relatively wide gain spectrum due to the inhomogeneous size distribution. The gain was, however, insufficient for two-color lasing even when the nine QD layers were used. Substituting two types of InGaAs multiple quantum wells (MQWs) for the QDs, we were able to demonstrate two-color lasing of the device when the gain peaks of MQWs were tuned to the cavity modes by lowering the operating temperature.

An adaptive time-step control method is proposed for the damped pseudo-transient analysis (DPTA) method. The new method is based on the idea of switched evolution/relaxation (SER), which can automatically adapt the step size for different circuit states. Considering the number of iterations needed for the convergence of Newton-Raphson (NR) method and the states in previous steps, the proposed method can automatically optimize the time-step size. Using numerical examples, the new method is proven to improve robustness, simulation efficiency, and the convergence of DPTA for solving nonlinear DC circuit equations.

Driving safety related innovations received increasing interest from automotive industry. We performed an experiment to observe what situations are related to the secured feelings drivers feel when they drive, and found out that drivers need to have four to seven seconds to react possible collision when they operate onboard Human Machine Interface (HMI) devices and check display devices. We explored the distance of semantic space to see what factors of HMI interaction lead to the secured feeling in that time period, and extracted 32 types of factors that lead to the secured feelings. Furthermore, in the process of investigating the semantic space distance, the indicators relating to the secured feelings obtained in the prior studies were further determined to be ‘The layout of the operation device is the same as the driver's image' and ‘The driver can use the word he uses every day to give instructions’ in this time period.’, which were more concrete factors of the secured feelings.

We integrate a pressure sensing capacitor and a low operation voltage OFET to develop a pressure sensor. The OFET was used as a readout device and an external pressure was loaded on the sensing capacitor. The OFET operates at less than 5 V and the change in the drain current in response to the pressure load (100 kPa) is two orders of magnitude.

In order to prevent the synonym substitution breaking the balance among frequencies of synonyms and improve the statistical undetectability, this paper proposed a novel linguistic steganography based on synonym run-length encoding. Firstly, taking the relative word frequency into account, the synonyms appeared in the text are digitized into binary values and expressed in the form of runs. Then, message are embedded into the parities of runs' lengths by self-adaptively making a positive or negative synonym transformation on boundary elements of two adjacent runs, while preserving the number of relative high and low frequency synonyms to reduce the embedding distortion. Experimental results have shown that the proposed synonym run-length encoding based linguistic steganographic algorithm makes fewer changes on the statistical characteristics of cover texts than other algorithms, and enhances the capability of anti-steganalysis.

Restoration is an important area in improving the visual quality, and lays the foundation for accurate object detection or terrain classification in image analysis. In this paper, we introduce Beta process priors into hierarchical sparse Bayesian learning for recovering underlying degraded hyperspectral images (HSI), including suppressing the various noises and inferring the missing data. The proposed method decomposes the HSI into the weighted summation of the dictionary elements, Gaussian noise term and sparse noise term. With these, the latent information and the noise characteristics of HSI can be well learned and represented. Solved by Gibbs sampler, the underlying dictionary and the noise can be efficiently predicted with no tuning of any parameters. The performance of the proposed method is compared with state-of-the-art ones and validated on two hyperspectral datasets, which are contaminated with the Gaussian noises, impulse noises, stripes and dead pixel lines, or with a large number of data missing uniformly at random. The visual and quantitative results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method.

A simple but efficient method for evaluating the channel capacity of 2×2 multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna systems is proposed. First, the channel capacity of a half-wavelength dipole array antenna is calculated using the Monte Carlo method by changing the incident-wave signal-to-noise power ratio, the power difference between two elements, and the correlation coefficient. Using the calculated results, a polynomial function is derived by multivariate regression analysis to estimate the channel capacity. The validity of the developed function is confirmed by comparing the channel capacity estimated by the developed function with that calculated by the Monte Carlo method using a MIMO array antenna operated under various scenarios, including antenna-human body electromagnetic interactions and radio-wave propagation environments, for future MIMO systems. The function is also validated by means of two experimental approaches: the use of radiation patterns measured in an anechoic chamber and the use of a spatial fading emulator that can create a two-dimensional fading environment.

Thin films of vinyl derivatives of naphthalene diimide were prepared by electron-assisted vapor deposition. Monomer materials of N, N'-bis(allyl)-naphthalene diimide (Allyl-NDI) and N,N'-bis(p-vinyl-benzyl)-naphthalene diimide (Sty-NDI) were newly synthesized for this purpose. Uniform films were obtained by vapor-depositing these materials, whereas spin-coating yielded nonuniform films. IR analysis suggested that Sty-NDI can be polymerized upon vapor deposition. An insoluble film of Sty-NDI was obtained by the electron-assisted vapor deposition. On the other hand, Allyl-NDI had lower reactivity for polymerization. It was concluded that Sty-NDI is a promising material for preparing thin films of vinyl polymer having naphthalene diimide units.
In this paper, the performance of a vehicle information sharing (VIS) system for an intersection collision warning system (ICWS) is analyzed. The on-board unit (OBU) of the ICWS sharing obstacle detection sensor information (ICWS-ODSI) is mounted on a vehicle, and it obtains information about the surrounding vehicles, such as their position and velocity, by its in-vehicle obstacle detection sensors. These information are shared with other vehicles via an intervehicle communication network. In this analysis, a T-junction is assumed as the road environment for the theoretical analysis of the VIS performance in terms of the mean of entire vehicle information acquiring probability (MEVIAP). The MEVIAP on OBU penetration rate indicated that the ICWS-ODSI is superior to the conventional VIS system that only shares its own individual driving information via an intervehicle communication network. Furthermore, the MEVIAP on the sensing range of the ICWS-ODSI is analyzed, and it was found that the ISO15623 sensor used for the forward vehicle collision warning system becomes a candidate for the in-vehicle detection sensor of ICWS-ODSI.

We have developed membrane distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) lasers on thermally oxidized Si substrate (SiO2/Si substrate) to evaluate the parameters of the on-Si lasers we have been developing. The lasers have InGaAsP-based multi-quantum wells (MQWs) grown on InP substrate. We used direct bonding to transfer this active epitaxial layer to SiO2/Si substrate, followed by epitaxial growth of InP to fabricate a buried-heterostructure (BH) on Si. The lateral p-i-n structure was formed by thermal diffusion of Zn and ion implantation of Si. For the purpose of evaluating laser parameters such as internal quantum efficiency and internal loss, we fabricated long-cavity lasers that have 200- to 600-µm-long active regions. The fabricated DBR lasers exhibit threshold currents of 1.7, 2.1, 2.8, and 3.7mA for active-region lengths of 200, 300, 400, and 600µm, respectively. The differential quantum efficiency also depends on active-region length. In addition, the laser characteristics depend on the distance between active region and p-doped region. We evaluated the internal loss to be 10.2cm-1 and internal quantum efficiency to be 32.4% with appropriate doping profile.

We consider a decentralized similarity control problem for composite nondeterministic discrete event systems, where each subsystem has its own local specification and the entire specification is described as the synchronous composition of local specifications. We present necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a complete decentralized supervisor that solves a similarity control problem under the assumption that any locally uncontrollable event is not shared by other subsystems. We also show that the system controlled by the complete decentralized supervisor that consists of maximally permissive local supervisors is bisimilar to the one controlled by the maximally permissive monolithic supervisor under the same assumption.

This paper focus on the development of a single portable roadside magnetic sensor for vehicle classification. The magnetic sensor is a kind of anisotropic magnetic device that do not require to be embedded in the roadway-the device is placed next to the roadway and measure traffic in the immediately adjacent lane. A novel feature extraction and comparison approach is presented for vehicle classification with a single magnetic sensor, which is based on four different feature sets extracted from the detected magnetic signal. Furthermore, vehicle classification has been achieved with three common classification algorithms, including support vector machine, k-nearest neighbors and back-propagation neural network. Experimental results have demonstrated that the Peak-Peak feature set with back-propagation neural network approach performs much better than other approaches. Besides, the normalization technology has been proved it does work.

Labeling a salient region accurately in video with cluttered background and complex motion condition is still a challenging work. Most existing video salient region detection models mainly extract the stimulus-driven saliency features to detect the salient region in video. They are easily influenced by the cluttered background and complex motion conditions. It may lead to incomplete or wrong detection results. In this paper, we propose a video salient region detection framework by fusing the stimulus-driven saliency features and spatiotemporal consistency cue to improve the performance of detection under these complex conditions. On one hand, stimulus-driven spatial saliency features and temporal saliency features are extracted effectively to derive the initial spatial and temporal salient region map. On the other hand, in order to make use of the spatiotemporal consistency cue, an effective spatiotemporal consistency optimization model is presented. We use this model optimize the initial spatial and temporal salient region map. Then the superpixel-level spatiotemporal salient region map is derived by optimizing the initial spatiotemporal salient region map. Finally, the pixel-level spatiotemporal salient region map is derived by solving a self-defined energy model. Experimental results on the challenging video datasets demonstrate that the proposed video salient region detection framework outperforms state-of-the-art methods.

In this paper, we study the degrees of freedom (DoF) of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) multiway relay channel (mRC) with two relays, two clusters and K (K≥3) users per cluster. We consider a clustered full data exchange model, i.e., each user in a cluster sends a multicast (common) message to all other users in the same cluster and desires to acquire all messages from them. The DoF results of the mRC with the single relay have been reported. However, the DoF achievability of the mRC with multiple relays is still an open problem. Furthermore, we consider a more practical scenario where no channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) is available to each user. We first give a DoF cut-set upper bound of the considered mRC. Then, we propose a distributed interference neutralization and retransmission scheme (DINR) to approach the DoF cut-set upper bound. In the absence of user cooperation, this method focuses on the beamforming matrix design at each relay. By investigating channel state information (CSI) acquisition, we show that the DINR scheme can be performed by distributed processing. Theoretical analyses and numerical simulations show that the DoF cut-set upper bound can be attained by the DINR scheme. It is shown that the DINR scheme can provide significant DoF gain over the conventional time division multiple access (TDMA) scheme. In addition, we show that the DINR scheme is superior to the existing single relay schemes for the considered mRC.

Protection of the licensed user (LU) and utilization of the spectrum are the most important goals in cognitive radio networks. To achieve the first goal, a cognitive user (CU) is required to sense for a longer time period, but this adversely affects the second goal, i.e., throughput or utilization of the network, because of the reduced time left for transmission in a time slot. This tradeoff can be controlled by simultaneous sensing and data transmission for the whole frame duration. However, increasing the sensing time to the frame duration consumes more energy. We propose a new frame structure in this paper, in which transmission is done for the whole frame duration whereas sensing is performed only until the required detection probability is satisfied. This means the CU is not required to perform sensing for the whole frame duration, and thus, conserves some energy by sensing for a smaller duration. With the proposed frame structure, throughput of all the CUs is estimated for the frame and, based on the estimated throughput and consumed energy in sensing and transmission, the energy efficient pair of CUs (transmitter and receiver) that maximizes system throughput by consuming less energy, is selected for a time slot. The selected CUs transmits data for the whole time slot, whereas sensing is performed only for certain duration. The performance improvement of the proposed scheme is demonstrated through simulations by comparing it with existing schemes.

Building detection from high resolution remote sensing images is challenging due to the high intraclass variability and the difficulty in describing buildings. To address the above difficulties, a novel approach is proposed based on the combination of shape-specific feature extraction and discriminative feature classification. Shape-specific feature can capture complex shapes and structures of buildings. Discriminative feature classification is effective in reflecting similarities among buildings and differences between buildings and backgrounds. Experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
This paper presents the set of procedures to blend GNSS and V2V communication to improve the performance of the stand-alone on-board GNSS receiver and to assure mutual positioning with a bounded error. Particle filter algorithm is applied to enhance mutual positioning of vehicles, and it fuses the information provided by the GNSS receiver, wireless measurements in vehicular environments, odometer, and digital road map data including reachability and zone probabilities. Measurement-based statistical model of relative distance as a function of Time-of-Arrival is experimentally obtained. The number of collaborative vehicles to the mutual positioning procedure is investigated in terms of positioning accuracy and network performance through realistic simulation studies, and the proposed mutual positioning procedure is experimentally evaluated by a fleet of five IEEE 802.11p radio modem equipped vehicles. Collaboration in a VANET improves availability of position measurement and its accuracy up to 40% in comparison with respect to the stand-alone GNSS receiver.

An interference-aware dynamic channel assignment scheme is proposed with consideration of co-tier interference for the downlink of an OFDMA/FDD based dense small-cell network. The proposed scheme adaptively assigns subchannels to the small-cell user equipment (SUE) according to the given traffic load and interference effect from neighbor small-cell access points. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme outperforms the other schemes based on the graph coloring algorithm in terms of the mean SUE capacity.

This paper studies H∞ control for networked control systems with packet loss. In networked control systems, packet loss is one of major weakness because the control performance deteriorates due to packet loss. H∞ control, which is one of robust control, can design a controller to reduce the influence of disturbances acting on the controlled object. This paper proposes an H∞ control design that considers packet loss as a disturbance. Numerical examples show that the proposed H∞ control design can more effectively reduce control performance deterioration due to packet loss than the conventional H∞ control design. In addition, this paper provides control performance comparisons of H∞ control and Linear Quadratic (LQ) control. Numerical examples show that the control performance of the proposed H∞ control design is better than that of the LQ control design.
