  • Improving Elevation Estimation Accuracy in DOA Estimation: How Planar Arrays Can Be Modified into 3-D Configuration

    This paper presents a simple 3-D array configuration for high-resolution 2-D Direction-Of-Arrival (DOA) estimation. Planar array structures like Uniform Rectangular Array (URA) or Uniform Circular Array (UCA) often well estimate azimuth angle but cannot well estimate elevation angle because of short antenna aperture in elevation direction. One may put more number of array elements to improve elevation angle estimation accuracy, however it will require very large hardware and software cost. This paper presents a simple 3-D array structure for high-resolution 2-D DOA estimation only by modifying the height of some array elements in a planar array. Based on the analysis of Cramer-Rao Lower Bound (CRLB) formulation and its dependency on the height of array elements, we develop a simple 3-D array structure which improves elevation angle estimation accuracy while preserving azimuth angle estimation accuracy.

    This paper presents a novel similarity measure that computes similarity scores among scientific research papers. The text of a given paper in online scientific literature is often found to be incomplete in terms of its potential to be compared with others, which likely leads to inaccurate results. Our solution to this problem makes use of both text and link information of a paper in question for similarity scores in that the comparison text of the paper is strengthened by adding that of papers related to it. More accurate similarity scores can be computed by reinforcing the input with the citations of the paper as well as the citations included within the paper. The efficacy of the proposed measure is validated through our extensive performance evaluation study which demonstrates a substantial gain.

    We derive a closed-form expression for the outage probability (OP), which is an important performance metric used to measure the probability that the target error rate performance of wireless systems exceeds a specified value, of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying systems with best antenna selection under independent, but not necessarily identical distributed Nakagami-m fading. To gain further insights on the performance, the asymptotic approximation for OP, which reveals the diversity gain, is presented. We show that the diversity gain is solely determined by the fading severity parameters and increases with number of antennas at all nodes.

    This letter deals with a system identification problem with unknown model order, which can be formulated as the matrix rank minimization problem by applying the subspace identification method. A sequential rank minimization algorithm is provided by modifying the null space based alternating optimization (NSAO) algorithm, and a model order identification algorithm is proposed. Numerical examples show that the proposed sequential algorithm can adaptively identify the model order of switched systems whose model order changes.

    Single front-end architecture with parasitic antenna element (PAE) in compact array system has been proposed for enhancing spectral efficiency and miniaturizing the receiver. Although most of studies paid attention to design optimal receiver with antenna mutual coupling on fading correlation, relatively little attention has been paid to noise. In this paper, we propose a low noise model for single front-end MIMO receiver system with PAE which includes arbitrary signal and noise coupling. The proposed model articulates physical noise sources and relates their spatial correlation with array receive antennas, parasitic element, front-end and matching circuit. A matching circuit is designed to achieve minimum noise figure. After that, the optimal PAE value is derived to maximize channel capacity. We present numerical analysis to verify the proposed system on certain conditions.

    PMIPv6 is the IETF standard for a network-based localized mobility management protocol. In PMIPv6, MNs are topologically anchored at an LMA, which forwards all data for registered MNs. However, since all data packets destined for MNs always traverse the MNs' LMA, the end-to-end packet delay is increased. Therefore, this paper proposes an RO scheme in single and multiple LMA environments. For efficient RO possibility detection, an IPv6 RO extension header and initial RO procedure are proposed. Plus, an effective post-handover RO procedure is presented, along with a packet forwarding scheme to avoid the race condition problem during an RO operation. A Performance evaluation confirms that the proposed scheme can significantly reduce the end-to-end delay, signaling overhead, and RO latency when compared with existing RO schemes.

    A new information detection method has been proposed for a very fast and efficient search engine. This method is implemented on hardware system using FPGA. We take advantages of Content Addressable Memory (CAM) which has an ability of matching mode for designing the system. The CAM blocks have been designed using available memory blocks of the FPGA device to save access times of the whole system. The entire memory can return multi-match results concurrently. The system operates based on the CAMs for pattern matching, in a parallel manner, to output multiple addresses of multi-match results. Based on the parallel multi-match operations, the system can be applied for pattern matching with various required constraint conditions without using any search principles. The very fast multi-match results are achieved at 60 ns with the operation frequency 50 MHz. This increases the search performance of the information detection system which uses this method as the core system.

    This paper describes very compact MIC magic-Ts and their integration with planar array antennas to realize the advanced antenna modules. The orthogonal transmission modes are effectively used to arrange the preferable port layout of magic-Ts. This flexible port layout of magic-Ts is a practical feature for integration with planar array antennas. The integration of magic-Ts and planar array antennas can easily create advanced functions. A couple of array antennas based on the integration advantages are introduced to materialize this technical concept. This integration approach is of big worth to originate various kinds of advanced antennas and the wireless modules in the ubiquitous society.

    WiMAX wireless communication has been rapidly developed for broadband mobile communication. Mobile WiMAX communication system uses microwave carrier of 2.5 GHz frequency band and modulation is OFDM mainly. By using OFDM technique, WiMAX provide high speed and reliable communication against multi pass interferences due to the presence of obstacles in communication channels. To design excellent high performance mobile communication systems, accurate evaluation of communication system is indispensable. By using parallel FDTD, we studied fundamental characteristics of microwave propagation and scattering in urban area. We also studied wave propagation and scattering by forest and trees using FDTD method. The effects of multiple scattering and attenuation of microwave by forest are severe factors of high speed wireless communications. In this paper, signal propagation and receiving characteristics of OFDM modulated wave are studied by parallel FDTD method. Propagation, reflection, scattering, interference and delay of digital code signals in received code signals are evaluated to show the environmental characteristics. Parallel FDTD methods are applied for signal and noise analysis about several different complex models and inhomogeneous materials such as forests in long distance communication channels.

    We demonstrate how Hsiang and Shih's authentication scheme can be compromised and then propose an improved scheme based on the Rabin cryptosystem to overcome its weaknesses. Furthermore, we discuss the reason why we should use an asymmetric encryption algorithm to secure a password-based remote user authentication scheme using smart cards. We formally prove the security of our proposed scheme using the BAN logic.

    In this letter, a Simple but Effective Congestion Control scheme (SECC) in VANET has been proposed to guarantee the successful transmissions for safety-related nodes. The strategy derive a Maximum Beacon Load Activity Indicator (MBLAI) to restrain the neighboring general periodical beacon load for the investigated safety-related “observation nodes”, i.e., the nodes associated with some emergent events. This mechanism actually reserves some bandwidth for the safety-related nodes to make them have higher priorities than periodical beacons to access channel. Different from the static congestion control scheme in IEEE802.11p, this strategy could provide dynamic control strength for congestion according to tolerant packets drop ratio for different applications.

    Incorporating insights from human visual perception into 3D object processing has become an important research field in computer graphics during the past decades. Many computational models for different applications have been proposed, such as mesh saliency, mesh roughness and mesh skeleton. In this letter, we present a novel Skeleton Modulated Topological Visual Perception Map (SMTPM) integrated with visual attention and visual masking mechanism. A new skeletonisation map is presented and used to modulate the weight of saliency and roughness. Inspired by salient viewpoint selection, a new Loop subdivision stencil decision based rapid viewpoint selection algorithm using our new visual perception is also proposed. Experimental results show that the SMTPM scheme can capture more richer visual perception information and our rapid viewpoint selection achieves high efficiency.

    A left-handed material with simple structure is proposed. The material is composed of periodic metal strips exhibiting both electric property and magnetic property. The dispersion relations and the transmission characteristics are confirmed experimentally. The main field pattern of guided mode in the material is similar to that of the plane wave, and a transmission characteristic with low reflection is obtained for an impedance matching region.

    This paper proposes non-coherent multiple-input multi-ple-output (MIMO) communication systems employing per transmit antenna differential mapping (PADM), which generates an independent differentially encoded sequence for each of the multiple transmit antennas by means of space-time coding and mapping. At a receiver, the proposed PADM employs adaptive maximum-likelihood detection (MLD). The features of PADM are as follows: 1) it has excellent tracking performance for fast time-varying fading channels, because it can detect transmitted data without needing channel state information (CSI); 2) it can be applied not only to transmit diversity (TD) but also to spatial multiplexing (SM). In this paper, we analyze the adaptive MLD based on pseudo matrix inversion and derive its metric for data detection. In order to satisfy requirements on multiple transmitted sequences for the adaptive MLD, this paper proposes a mapping rule for PADM. Next, this paper describes a receiver structure based on per-survivor processing (PSP), which can drastically reduce the complexity of adaptive MLD. Finally, computer simulations confirm that the proposed non-coherent MIMO communication systems employing PADM have excellent tracking capability for TD and SM on fast time-varying fading channels.

    A 60 GHz direct conversion transceiver which employs amplitude/phase imbalance cancellation technique is newly proposed. By using the proposed technique, the receive path of the transceiver achieves less than 0.2 dB of amplitude error and less than 3 of phase error at 60 GHz bands over a 10 GHz bandwidth, which relaxes the design accuracy required for baluns used in the transceiver. It also employs a simple and fast calibration algorithm to adjust the locking range of the divide-by-3 injection locked divider in the phase locked loop. Fabricated in 90 nm CMOS technology, the transceiver achieves a low power consumption of 230 mW in transmit mode and 173 mW in receive mode. The output spectrum of 1.76 Gsps π/2-BPSK/QPSK modulation shows the excellent distortion and spurious suppression that meet the IEEE802.11ad draft standard.

  • Experimental Verifications of Left-Handed Characteristics of 3-D Left-Handed Metamaterial Composed of Periodic Wired Metallic Spheres

    The left-handed (LH) operation of a three-dimensional (3-D) LH material composed of wired metallic spheres is experimentally confirmed. A 15153-cell periodic structure designed to have an isotropic LH characteristics is fabricated by a 3-D printer with post plating technology, and near-field measurements of refracted waves by the negative refractive index slab lens are carried out. The dispersion characteristics measured from the near-field distributions on the surface of the LH material clearly show that the structure supports the backward waves at 12 GHz band. It is also shown experimentally that the resolution of the slab lens exceeds the diffraction limit by near field measurements with a single source and adjacent two sources. In addition, near-field measurements from the LH material near the Γ-point frequency at 12.90 GHz are carried out. A highly directive plane wave with a single point source is observed and the near-zero-index operation has been confirmed.

    In the millimeter-wave band, the series-fed array antenna is facing a problem of large transmission loss and narrow bandwidth by using a high-permittivity and large-loss-tangent material. In this paper, an air region is inserted in the half of the height in the LTCC waveguide of εr =6.6 and tanδ =0.013 to reduce the transmission loss. The reduction of the equivalent dielectric constant by the air insertion structure enhances both the gain and the bandwidth of the series-fed slot array. The transmission loss of the single-mode rectangular waveguide has been reduced to about 1/6 by using the partially-filled structure in the 60-GHz band. In a one-dimensional slot array, the total loss has also been reduced to about 1/7. And the 3 dB-down gain bandwidth has also been increased from 1.3 GHz to 2.3 GHz.

  • State Classification with Array Sensor Using Support Vector Machine for Wireless Monitoring Systems

    We have previously proposed an indoor monitoring and security system with an array sensor. The array sensor has some advantages, such as low privacy concern, easy installation with low cost, and wide detection range. Our study is different from the previously proposed classification method for array sensor, which uses a threshold to classify only two states for intrusion detection: nothing and something happening. This paper describes a novel state classification method based on array signal processing with a machine learning algorithm. The proposed method uses eigenvector and eigenvalue spanning the signal subspace as features, obtained from the array sensor, and assisted by multiclass support vector machines (SVMs) to classify various states of a human being or an object. The experimental results show that our proposed method can provide high classification accuracy and robustness, which is very useful for monitoring and surveillance applications.

    All points on the Pareto boundary can be obtained by solving the weighted sum rate maximization problem for some weighted coefficients. Unfortunately, the problem is non-convex and difficult to solve without performing an exhaustive search. In this paper, we propose an optimal distributed beamforming strategy for the two-user multiple-input single-output (MISO) interference channel (IC). Through minimizing the interference signal power leaked to the other receiver for fixed useful signal power received at the intended receiver, the original non-convex optimization problem can be converted into a family of convex optimization problems, each which can be solved in distributed manner with only local channel state information at each transmitter. After some conversion, we derive the closed-form solutions to all Pareto optimal points based on a game-theoretic viewpoint which indicates that linear combinations of the maximum-ratio transmit (MRT) and zero-forcing (ZF) beamforming strategies can achieve any point on the Pareto boundary of the rate region for the two-user MISO interference channel, and the only computation involved is to solve a basic quadratic equation. Finally, the result is validated via numerical simulations.

    This paper aims at channel modeling and bit error rate (BER) performance improvement with diversity reception for in-body to on-body ultra wideband (UWB) communication for capsule endoscope application. The channel characteristics are firstly extracted from 3.4 to 4.8 GHz by using finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulations incorporated with an anatomical human body model, and then a two-path impulse response channel model is proposed. Based on the two-path channel model, a spatial diversity reception technique is applied to improve the communication performance. Since the received signal power at each receiver location follows a lognormal distribution after summing the two path components, we investigate two methods to approximate the lognormal sum distribution in the combined diversity channel. As a result, the method matching a short Gauss-Hermite approximation of the moment generating function (MGF) of the lognormal sum with that of a lognormal distribution exhibits high accuracy and flexibility. With the derived probability density function (PDF) for the combined diversity signals, the average BER performances for impulse-radio (IR) UWB with non-coherent detection are investigated to clarify the diversity effect by both theoretical analysis and computer simulation. The results realize an improvement around 10 dB on Eb/No at BER of 10-3 for two-branch diversity reception.
