  • A Downlink Multi-Relay Transmission Scheme Employing Tomlinson-Harashima Precoding and Interference Alignment

    This paper proposes a downlink multi-user transmission scheme for the amplify-and-forward(AF)-based multi-relay cellular network, in which Tomlinson-Harashima precoding(TH precoding) and interference alignment(IA) are jointly applied. The whole process of transmission is divided into two phases: TH precoding is first performed at base-station(BS) to support the multiplexing of data streams transmitted to both mobile-stations(MS) and relay-stations(RS), and then IA is performed at both BS and RSs to achieve the interference-free communication. During the whole process, neither data exchange nor strict synchronization is required among BS and RSs thus reducing the cooperative complexity as well as improving the system performance. Theoretical analysis is provided with respect to the channel capacity of different types of users, resulting the upper-bounds of channel capacity. Our analysis and simulation results show that the joint applications of TH precoding and IA outperforms other schemes in the presented multi-relay cellular network.

    In this study, we propose a cooperative sensing with distributed pre-detection for gathering sensing information on shared primary system. We have proposed a system that gathers multiple sensing information by using the orthogonal narrowband signal; the system is called the orthogonal frequency-based sensing information gathering (OF-SIG) method. By using this method, sensing information from multiple secondary nodes can be gathered from the surrounding secondary nodes simultaneously by using the orthogonal narrowband signals. The advantage of this method is that the interference from each node is small because a narrowband tone signal is transmitted from each node. Therefore, if appropriate power and transmission control are applied at the surrounding nodes, the sensing information can be gathered in the same spectrum as the primary system. To avoid interference with the primary receiver, we propose a cooperative sensing with distributed pre-detection for gathering sensing information in each node by limiting sensing node power. In the proposed method, the number of sensing information transmitting nodes depends on the pre-detection ability of the individual sensing at each node. Then the secondary node can increase the transmit power by improving the sensing detection ability, and the secondary node can gather the sensing information from the surrounding secondary nodes which are located more far by redesign the transmit power of the secondary nodes. Here, we design the secondary transmit power based on OF-SIG while considering the aggregated interference from multiple sensing nodes and individual sensing ability. Finally we confirm the performance of the cooperative sensing of the proposed method through computer simulation.

  • High Order Limited Random Sequence in Analog-to-Information Converter for Distributed Compressive Sensing

    Limited Random Sequence (LRS) is quite important for Analog-to-Information Converter (AIC) because it determines the random sampling scheme and the resultant performance. LRS is established with the elements of “0” and “1”. The “1” appears randomly in the segment of the sequence, so that the production of the original signal and LRS can be considered as the approximation of the random sampling of the original signal. The random sampling result can perfectly recover the signal with Compressive Sensing (CS) algorithm. In this paper, a high order LRS is proposed for the AIC design in Distributed Compressive Sensing (DCS), which has the following three typical features: 1) The high order LRS has the elements of integer which can indicate the index number of the sensor in DCS. 2) High order LRS can adapt to the sparsity variation of the original signal detected by each sensor. 3) Employing the AIC with high order LRS, the DCS algorithm can recover the signal with very low sampling rate, usually above 2 orders less than the traditional distributed sensors. In the paper, the scheme and the construction algorithm of high order LRS are proposed. The performance is evaluated with the application studies of the distributed sensor network and the camera picture correspondingly.

  • Low-Complexity Concatenated Soft-In Soft-Out Detector for Spreading OFDM Systems

    This paper proposes a low-complexity concatenated (LCC) soft-in soft-out (SISO) detector for spreading OFDM systems. The LCC SISO detector uses the turbo principle to compute the extrinsic information of the optimal maximum a priori probability (MAP) SISO detector with extremely low complexity. To develop the LCC SISO detector, we first partition the spreading matrix into some concatenated sparse matrices separated by interleavers. Then, we use the turbo principle to concatenate some SISO detectors, which are separated by de-interleavers or interleavers. Each SISO detector computes the soft information for each sparse matrix. By exchanging the soft information between the SISO detectors, we find the extrinsic information of the MAP SISO detector with extremely low complexity. Simulation results show that using the LCC SISO detector produces a near-optimal performance for both uncoded and coded spreading OFDM systems. In addition, by using the LCC SISO detector, the spreading OFDM system significantly improves the BER of the conventional OFDM system.

    A reverse mode liquid crystal (LC) display has been investigated. A driving voltage strongly depends on a morphology which changes by reactive mesogens, photo initiators and LCs. It becomes higher when the domain size of the liquid crystal and the particle of the polymer reactive mesogen are smaller.

    Blind source separation (BSS) techniques are required for various signal decomposing issues. Independent component analysis (ICA), assuming only a statistical independence among stochastic source signals, is one of the most useful BSS tools because it does not need a priori information on each source. However, there are many requirements for decomposing multiple deterministic signals such as complex sinusoidal signals with different frequencies. These requirements may include pulse compression or clutter rejection. It has been theoretically shown that an ICA algorithm based on maximizing non-Gaussianity successfully decomposes such deterministic signals. However, this ICA algorithm does not maintain a sufficient separation performance when the frequency difference of the sinusoidal waves becomes less than a nominal frequency resolution. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a super-resolution algorithm for complex sinusoidal signals by extending the maximum likelihood ICA, where the probability density function (PDF) of a complex sinusoidal signal is exploited as a priori knowledge, in which the PDF of the signal amplitude is approximated as a Gaussian distribution with an extremely small standard deviation. Furthermore, we introduce an optimization process for this standard deviation to avoid divergence in updating the reconstruction matrix. Numerical simulations verify that our proposed algorithm remarkably enhances the separation performance compared to the conventional one, and accomplishes a super-resolution separation even in noisy situations.

    This letter presents a novel weighted reliability-based (WRB) algorithm for decoding low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. Viewing the well-known normalized min sum (NMS) algorithm as reliability-based, the WRB algorithm can be seen as a simplified version of the NMS algorithm. Unlike the NMS algorithm, the WRB algorithm does not update the soft information sent between the variable nodes and check nodes, which greatly reduces the decoding complexity. For finite geometry LDPC codes with larger row redundancy and column weights, simulation results show that the WRB algorithm almost matches the error performance of the NMS algorithm.

    We observe that the state-of-the-art power-saving mechanisms (PSM) for IEEE 802.16e is neither optimal in terms of delay nor in terms of energy consumption. We propose a new PSM which achieves the optimality in terms of the average buffering delay without increasing energy consumption. In order to do so, we derive a formula which relates the average buffering delay to sleep intervals. Simulation results show that our scheme surpasses the BTE algorithm (used by the current IEEE 802.16e Mobile Stations) by 56.75–76% and the PSID algorithm by 8.52–24.39% in terms of the delay-energy consumption product.

    Fast and accurate estimation of missing relations, e.g., similarity, distance and kernel, among objects is now one of the most important techniques required by major data mining tasks, because the missing information of the relations is needed in many applications such as economics, psychology, and social network communities. Though some approaches have been proposed in the last several years, the practical balance between their required computation amount and obtained accuracy are insufficient for some class of the relation estimation. The objective of this paper is to formalize a problem to quickly and efficiently estimate missing relations among objects from the other known relations among the objects and to propose techniques called “PSD Estimation” and “Row Reduction” for the estimation problem. This technique uses a characteristic of the relations named “Positive Semi-Definiteness (PSD)” and a special assumption for known relations in a matrix. The superior performance of our approach in both efficiency and accuracy is demonstrated through an evaluation based on artificial and real-world data sets.

  • A Comprehensive Instrument for Measuring Individual Competency of IT Applications in an Enterprise IT Environment

    An instrument that can efficiently measure individual competency of IT applications (ICITA) is presented. It allows an organization to develop and manage the IT application capability of individuals working in an enterprise IT environment. The measurement items are generated from the definition and major components of individual competency of IT applications. The reliability and validity of the instrument construct are verified by factor and correlation analysis. A 15-item instrument is proposed to efficiently measure individual competency of IT applications and the instrument will contribute to the improved ICITA of human resources working in an enterprise IT environment.

    In this paper, we focus on the cancellation of interference among Destination Users (DU's) and the improvement of achievable sum rate of the nonregenerative multiuser Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) relay downlink system. A novel design method of transmit weight is proposed to successively eliminate the interference among DU's, each of which is equipped with multiple receive antennas. We firstly investigate the transmit weight design for the Amplify-and-Forward (AF) relay scheme where the Relay Station (RS) just retransmits the received signals from Base Station (BS), then extend it to the joint design scheme of transmit weights at the both BS and RS. In the proposed joint design scheme, through the comparison of lower bound of achievable rate, an effective DU selection algorithm is proposed to generate the transmit weight at the RS and obtain the multiuser diversity. Dirty Paper Coding (DPC) technique is employed to remove the interference among DU's and ensures the achievable rate of downlink. Theoretical derivation and simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme in obtaining the achievable rate performance and BER characteristics.

    Existing forwarding strategies for delay tolerant networks aim at network throughput maximization. They provide forwarding opportunities to more reachable destinations. This results in the long end-to-end delay and low throughput of less reachable destinations. In this paper, we propose two forwarding strategies to improve the throughput of less reachable nodes with little throughput degradation of more reachable nodes. Evaluation results show that the proposed forwarding strategies can control the levels of fairness among the destinations while maintaining high throughput, compared with the legacy forwarding strategies.

    It is well known that satellite communications systems are effective and essential communication infrastructure for disaster relief. NICT sent researchers to Tsunami stricken area in March right after the Great East Japan Earthquake and provided broadband satellite communications link to support rescue activities. Through this experience, we learned many kinds of requirements of communications for such purposes. In this paper, we list up the requirements and report what kind of satellite communications technologies are needed, and research and development issues.

    To acquire a second language, one must develop an ear and tongue for the correct stress and intonation patterns of that language. In English language teaching, there is an effective method called Jazz Chants for working on the sound system. In this paper, we propose a method for predicting stressed words, which play a crucial role in Jazz Chants. The proposed method is specially designed for stress prediction in Jazz chants. It exploits several sources of information including words, POSs, sentence types, and the constraint on the number of stressed words in a chant text. Experiments show that the proposed method achieves an F-measure of 0.939 and outperforms the other methods implemented for comparison. The proposed method is expected to be useful in supporting non-native teachers of English when they teach chants to students and create chant texts with stress marks from arbitrary texts.

    The problem of deciding whether a graph contains another graph appears in various applications. For solving this problem efficiently, we developed a numerical method to detect non-subgraphs, graphs which are not subgraphs of other graphs, by comparing eigenvalues of graphs. In this paper, we propose a method to make the detection more efficient by comparing of eigenvalues of graphs decomposed according to labels of the vertices and the edges. The new approach not only reduces the cost of computing eigenvalues but also increases the possibility of detecting non-subgraphs. The experimental evaluation shows the effectiveness of the proposed method.

    This paper proposes Burst Error Resilient coding (BRC) technology in mobile broadcasting network. The proposed method utilizes Scalable Video Coding (SVC) and Forward Error Correction (FEC) to overcome service outage due to burst loss in mobile network. The performance evaluation is performed by comparing PSNR of SVC and the proposed method under MBSFN simulation channel. The simulation result shows PSNR of SVC equal error protection (EEP), unequal error protection (UEP) and proposed BRC using Raptor FEC code.

    This paper presents a multi-band WCDMA receiver consisting of a multi-band low noise amplifier (LNA), a multi-band mixer and an inter-stage tunable notch filter. The notch filter is used to suppress Tx leakage, and 0.8–1.5 GHz (66%) of tuning range is achieved. The receiver achieves 33 and 30 dB conversion gain, 6.4 and 8 dB NF, 50 and 35.5 dBm IIP2, and -6 and -4.7 dBm IIP3 at 0.8 and 1.5 GHz, respectively. The power consumption is 121 mW from a 1.8-V power supply. The receiver is implemented in a 0.18-µm CMOS process.

    In this letter, we propose a new 4-dimensional constellation-rotation (CR) modulation method that achieves diversity gain of 4 in Rayleigh fading channels. The proposed scheme consists of two consecutive CR operations for QAM symbols unlike the conventional 2-dimensional CR method based on only one CR operation. Computer simulation results show that the new method exhibits much better performance than the conventional one in terms of code rate and channel erasure ratio.

  • Balanced Switching Schemes for Gradient-Error Compensation in Current-Steering DACs

    This paper introduces balanced switching schemes to compensate linear and quadratic gradient errors, in the unary current source array of a current-steering digital-to-analog converter (DAC). A novel algorithm is proposed to avoid the accumulation of gradient errors, yielding much less integral nonlinearities (INLs) than conventional switching schemes. Switching scheme examples with different number of current cells are also exhibited in this paper, including symmetric arrays and non-symmetric arrays in round and square outlines. (a) For symmetric arrays where each cell is divided into two parallel concentric ones, the simulated INL of the proposed round/square switching scheme is less than 25%/40% of conventional switching schemes, respectively. Such improvement is achieved by the cancelation of linear errors and the reduction of accumulated quadratic errors to near the absolute lower bound, using the proposed balanced algorithm. (b) For non-symmetric arrays, i.e. arrays where cells are not divided into parallel ones, linear errors cannot be canceled, and the accumulated INL varies with different quadratic error distribution centers. In this case, the proposed algorithm strictly controls the accumulation of quadratic gradient errors, and different from the algorithm in symmetric arrays, linear errors are also strictly controlled in two orthogonal directions simultaneously. Therefore, the INLs of the proposed non-symmetric switching schemes are less than 64% of conventional switching schemes.

  • Antenna Ordering in Low Complexity MIMO Detection Based on Ring-Type Markov Random Fields

    This letter addresses antenna ordering to improve the performance of the MIMO detectors in [4], where two low complexity MIMO detectors have been proposed based on either fully-connected or ring type pair-wise Markov random field (MRF). The former was shown to be better than the latter, while being more complex. The objective of this letter is to make the performance of the detector based on ring-type MRF (with complexity of O(2M 22m)) close to or better than that of fully-connected MRF (with complexity of O(M (M-1)22m)), by applying appropriate antenna ordering. The simulation results validate the proposed antenna ordering methods.
