    An efficient multiplier design method for predetermined coefficient groups is presented based on the variation of canonic signed digit (CSD) encoding and partial product sharing. By applications to radix-24 FFT structure and the pulse-shaping filter design used in CDMA, it is shown that the proposed method significantly reduces the area, propagation delay and power consumption compared with previous methods.

    In this paper, multiple-symbol differential detection (MSDD) is applied to the differential unitary space-time-frequency coding (DUSTFC) scheme over frequency selective fading multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels. The motivation of applying MSDD is to compensate for the performance loss of conventional (two-symbol observation) differential detection comparing with coherent detection, by extending the observation interval and considering the fading autocorrelations. Since the differential coding of DUSTFC can be performed in time or frequency domain, both the time-domain and frequency-domain MSDD are investigated. After calculating the frequency-domain fading autocorrelation, the decision metrics of MSDD considering appropriate fading autocorrelations are derived in time and frequency domain respectively. Bit error rate (BER) performances of the two kinds of MSDD are analyzed by computer simulations. Simulation results demonstrate that a considerable performance gain can be got by applying MSDD in both cases, and the transmit diversity gain can also be enhanced by applying MSDD. So that it is proved that full advantage of transmit diversity with DUSTFC can be taken by applying MSDD.

    Impossible differential attack (IDA) uses impossible differential characteristics extracted from enough plaintext pairs to retrieve subkeys of the first and the last several rounds of AES. In this paper, a general IDA on 7-round AES is proposed. Such attack takes the number of all-zero columns of the 7th and the 6th round as parameters (α,β). And a trade-off relation between the number of plaintexts and times of encryptions in the process of the attack is derived, which makes only some values of (α,β) allowed in the attack for different key length.

  • Propagation of Light in a Disordered Waveguide System: Average Amplitude

    The coupled mode equation describing the propagation of light in a disordered waveguide system composed of randomly different cores in size is analytically solved by the perturbation method and the average amplitude of light is derived. In the summation of a perturbation series only successive scatterings from different cores are taken into account. The result obtained shows that the average amplitude behaves as if in an ordered waveguide system composed of identical cores at short distance and decreases exponentially with increasing distance at large distance. The result is compared with the result obtained by the coherent potential approximation and the both results are in good agreement with each other. The results are also compared with the results obtained by numerically solving the coupled mode equation.

    The theoretical studies conducted mainly by the author are reviewed on (1) derivation of arbitrary order moment equations and solutions of some equations, (2) scattering by many particles and the effective medium constant of random medium, (3) scattering by a conducting body in random media and (4) spatially partially-coherent wave scattering, with application to satellite communications, artificial material development, and sensing and radar technology. The leading research results are described with many references; and also unsolved subjects in the above four studies are touched.

  • A Hybrid Inter-Cell Interference Mitigation Scheme for an OFDMA Downlink System

    A number of inter-cell interference coordination schemes have been proposed to mitigate the inter-cell interference problem for orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) systems and among them, partial frequency reuse is considered one of the most promising approaches. In this paper, we propose an inter-cell interference mitigation scheme for an OFDMA downlink system, which makes use of both partial frequency reuse and soft handover. The basic idea of this hybrid scheme is to dynamically select between a partial frequency reuse scheme and a soft handover scheme to provide better signal quality for cell edge users. Compared with the standard partial frequency reuse scheme, simulation results show that approximately one quarter of cell edge users can get improvements in signal quality as well as link spectral efficiency from using the proposed hybrid scheme. We also observe that by using our approach, there is a significant cell edge throughput gain over the standard partial frequency reuse scheme. Furthermore, based on a well defined data rate fairness criterion, we show that our method achieves higher overall system capacity as compared with the standard partial frequency reuse scheme.

    Partial forwarding is a design method to place forwarding paths on a part of processor pipeline. Hardware cost of processor can be reduced without performance loss by partial forwarding. However, compiler with the instruction scheduler which considers partial forwarding structure of the target processor is required since conventional scheduling algorithm cannot make the most of partial forwarding structure. In this paper, we propose a heuristic instruction scheduling method for processors with partial forwarding structure. The proposed algorithm uses available distance to schedule instructions which are suitable for the target partial forwarding processor. Experimental results show that the proposed method generates near-optimal solutions in practical time and some of the optimized codes for partial forwarding processor run in the shortest time among the target processors. It also shows that the proposed method is superior to hazard detection unit.

    Estimating a location of mobile phones or sound source is of considerable interest in wireless communications and signal processing. In this letter, we propose squared range weighted least squares (SRWLS) using the range estimate attained from the Taylor series-based maximum likelihood. The weight can be determined more accurately when using the proposed method, compared with the existing methods using the variance of noise. The simulation results show that the proposed method is superior to the existing methods in RMSE as the measurement noise amount of sensors increases.

  • Improve Throughput of Ad Hoc Networks Using Power Controlled Busy Tone

    The hidden terminal problem leads to frequent collisions and decreases the throughput of ad hoc networks dramatically. Low network spatial reuse also results in fewer parallel transmissions, which further leads to reduced network throughput. Eliminating the hidden terminals and improving the spatial reuse are two important approaches to improving network throughput. In this paper, spatial distribution of the hidden terminals is analyzed in consideration of accumulated interference and environmental noise. As the distribution of hidden terminals is affected by many factors such as transmitter-receiver distance, SINR requirement and nodes density, it is inefficient to use fixed busy tone transmission power. To eliminate the hidden terminals and improve network spatial reuse, an enhancement to DBTMA named EDBTMA is proposed. This is achieved by using an adaptive busy tone power control scheme. Receivers adjust the transmission power of busy tone according to received signal power and accumulated interference adaptively so that all hidden terminals (and only hidden terminals) are covered by the busy tone. Simulation results show that EDBTMA protocol can solve the hidden terminal problem and improve network spatial reuse better than DBTMA and achieves 65% additional network throughput compared to DBTMA.

    When cognitive radio (CR) systems dynamically use the frequency band, a control signal is necessary to indicate which carrier frequencies are currently available in the network. In order to keep efficient spectrum utilization, this control signal also should be transmitted based on the channel conditions. If transmitters dynamically select carrier frequencies, receivers have to receive control signals without knowledge of their carrier frequencies. To enable such transmission and reception, this paper proposes a novel scheme called DCPT (Differential Code Parallel Transmission). With DCPT, receivers can receive low-rate information with no knowledge of the carrier frequencies. The transmitter transmits two signals whose carrier frequencies are spaced by a predefined value. The absolute values of the carrier frequencies can be varied. When the receiver acquires the DCPT signal, it multiplies the signal by a frequency-shifted version of the signal; this yields a DC component that represents the data signal which is then demodulated. The performance was evaluated by means of numerical analysis and computer simulation. We confirmed that DCPT operates successfully even under severe interference if its parameters are appropriately configured.

    OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) is widely used in wideband wireless communication systems due to its excellent performance. One of the most important operations in OFDM receivers is preamble detection. This paper addresses a general form of extended differential detection methods, which is a combination of differential detection and a moving average filter. This paper also presents a filter size determination method that achieves satisfactory performance in various channel environments.

    We investigated an analogue modulation of magneto-optic spatial light modulator (MOSLM). For enhancement of the modulation from the voltage-driving MOSLM, magnetostriction and saturation magnetization of magnetic garnet films and piezoelectric constant of PZT films were investigated. The performance was expected to be improved by using Bismuth, Dysprosium and Aluminum substituted Yttrium Iron garnet, which effective magnetic field showed 20 times higher than Yttrium Iron garnet.

    This letter proposes a new adaptive filtering method that uses the last L desired signal samples as an extra input vector, besides the existing input data, to reduce mean square error. We have improved the convergence rate by adopting the squared norm of the past error samples, in addition to the modified cost function. The modified variable error-data normalized step-size least mean square algorithm provides fast convergence, ensuring a small final misadjustment. Simulation results indicate its superior mean square error performance, while its convergence rate equals that of existing methods. In addition, the proposed algorithm shows superior tracking capability when the system is subjected to an abrupt disturbance.

    In this paper, we study the performance of dual hop relaying in which the best relay selected by partial relay selection will help the source-destination link to overcome the channel impairment. Specifically, closed-form expressions for outage probability, symbol error probability and achievable diversity gain are derived using the statistical characteristic of the signal-to-noise ratio. Numerical investigation shows that the system achieves diversity of two regardless of relay number and also confirms the correctness of the analytical results. Furthermore, the performance loss due to partial relay selection is investigated.

    In this paper, a novel intra-die spatial correlation extraction method referred to as MLEMTC (Maximum Likelihood Estimation for Multiple Test Chips) is presented. In the MLEMTC method, a joint likelihood function is formulated by multiplying the set of individual likelihood functions for all test chips. This joint likelihood function is then maximized to extract a unique group of parameter values of a single spatial correlation function, which can be used for statistical circuit analysis and design. Moreover, to deal with the purely random component and measurement error contained in measurement data, the spatial correlation function combined with the correlation of white noise is used in the extraction, which significantly improves the accuracy of the extraction results. Furthermore, an LU decomposition based technique is developed to calculate the log-determinant of the positive definite matrix within the likelihood function, which solves the numerical stability problem encountered in the direct calculation. Experimental results have shown that the proposed method is efficient and practical.

    Machine recognition of mathematical expressions on printed documents is not trivial even when all the individual characters and symbols in an expression can be recognized correctly. In this paper, an automatic classification method of spatial relationships between the adjacent symbols in a pair is presented. This classification is important to realize an accurate structure analysis module of math OCR. Experimental results on very large databases showed that this classification worked well with an accuracy of 99.525% by using distribution maps which are defined by two geometric features, relative size and relative position, with careful treatment on document-dependent characteristics.

    We investigate and propose the utilization of regenerative and non-regenerative relaying terminals in downlink cooperative MIMO communications, such as in base-station/router-relay-user transmission under different schemes. The source is equipped with multiple antennas, while the relays and destination are single-antenna terminals. From the source to the relays, symbols are transmitted using MIMO spatial-multiplexing technique. Depending on the type of relaying scheme, the relays either fully decode or amplify the received signal before retransmitting it to the destination using simple TDM transmission or Alamouti's space-time coding. We show that the proposed system realizes MIMO performance in single-antenna system environment, and performance-wise it is superior to existing transmission schemes, especially in low-SNR conditions. Furthermore, the proposed system is shown to give a diversity order of N-M+1, similar to that of MIMO V-BLAST system.

    A simple detector named QR-LRL for MIMO systems was proposed in and it was shown that QR-LRL approached the hard-output ML performance. However, its soft-output performance is not capable of approaching the near ML performance. In this letter, we propose a novel detection method which can generate reliable soft-outputs while avoiding the empty vector set problem. The proposed detector efficiently uses the upper triangular structure in QR decomposition. Simulation results show that the proposed detector can approach the near soft-output ML performance as well as hard-output with feasible complexity.

    We propose a 2D display and camera arrangement for video communication systems that supports both spatial information between distant sites and user mobility. The implementation of this arrangement is called the "surrounding back screen method." The method enables users to freely come from and go into other users' spaces and provides every user with the direct pointing capability, since there is no apparent spatial barrier separating users, unlike the case of conventional video communication systems. In this paper, we introduce two properties ("sharedness" and "exclusiveness") and three parameters (a distance and two angles) to represent the geometrical relationship between two users. These properties and parameters are used to classify the shared spaces created by a video communication system and to investigate the surrounding back screen method. Furthermore, to demonstrate and explore our surrounding back screen method, we have developed a prototype system, called t-Room. Taking into account practical situations, we studied a practical case where two t-Rooms with different layouts are connected.

  • A Novel SNR Estimation Technique Associated with Hybrid ARQ

    By using multiple repeated signal replicas to formulate the accumulative observed noisy signal sequence (AONSS) or the differential observed noisy signal sequence (DONSS) in the hybrid ARQ system, a novel data-aided maximum likelihood (DA ML) SNR estimation and a blind ML SNR estimation technique are proposed for the AWGN channel. It is revealed that the conventional DA ML estimate is a special case of the novel DA ML estimate, and both the proposed DA ML and the proposed blind ML SNR estimation techniques can offer satisfactory SNR estimation without introducing significant additional complexity to the existing hybrid ARQ scheme. Based on the AONSS, both the generalized deterministic and the random Cramer-Rao lower bounds (GCRLBs), which include the traditional Cramer-Rao lower bounds (CRLBs) as special cases, are also derived. Finally, the applicability of the proposed SNR estimation techniques based on the AONSS and the DONSS are validated through numerical analysis and simulation results.
