For AES 128 security level there are several natural choices for pairing-friendly elliptic curves. In particular, as we will explain, one might choose curves with k=9 or curves with k=12. The case k=9 has not been studied in the literature, and so it is not clear how efficiently pairings can be computed in that case. In this paper, we present efficient methods for the k=9 case, including generation of elliptic curves with the shorter Miller loop, the denominator elimination and speed up of the final exponentiation. Then we compare the performance of these choices. From the analysis, we conclude that for pairing-based cryptography at the AES 128 security level, the Barreto-Naehrig curves are the most efficient choice, and the performance of the case k=9 is comparable to the Barreto-Naehrig curves.

In this paper we investigate designing optimal linear transmit/receive processing filters for multiuser MIMO downlinks with imperfect channel state information (CSI) and spatial fading correlation between antenna array at BS. A robust scheme is proposed to obtain the optimal linear transmit/receive filters in the sense of minimizing the average sum mean square error (SMSE) conditional on noisy channel estimates under a per-user transmit power constraint. Using an iterative procedure, the proposed scheme extends the existing optimization algorithm for uncorrelated single-user MIMO systems with perfect CSI to solve the problem of minimizing SMSE in spatially correlated MIMO downlinks with imperfect CSI. Comparing with non-robust scheme, we show that robust scheme efficiently mitigates the BER loss induced by imperfect CSI. In addition, the impact of fading correlation at BS on the performance of the proposed robust scheme is analyzed.

SHACAL-2 is a 64-round block cipher with a 256-bit block size and a variable length key of up to 512 bits. It is a NESSIE selected block cipher algorithm. In this paper, we observe that, when checking whether a candidate quartet is useful in a (related-key) rectangle attack, we can check the two pairs from the quartet one after the other, instead of checking them simultaneously; if the first pair does not meet the expected conditions, we can discard the quartet immediately. We next exploit a 35-round related-key rectangle distinguisher with probability 2-460 for the first 35 rounds of SHACAL-2, which is built on an existing 24-round related-key differential and a new 10-round differential. Finally, taking advantage of the above observation, we use the distinguisher to mount a related-key rectangle attack on the first 44 rounds of SHACAL-2 . The attack requires 2233 related-key chosen plaintexts, and has a time complexity of 2497.2 computations. This is better than any previously published cryptanalytic results on SHACAL-2 in terms of the numbers of attacked rounds.

In this letter, we propose a new H2 smoother (H2S) with a finite impulse response (FIR) structure for discrete-time state-space signal models. This smoother is called an H2 FIR smoother (H2FS). Constraints such as linearity, quasi-deadbeat property, FIR structure, and independence of the initial state information are required in advance to design H2FS that is optimal in the sense of H2 performance criterion. It is shown that H2FS design problem can be converted into the convex programming problem written in terms of a linear matrix inequality (LMI) with a linear equality constraint. Simulation study illustrates that the proposed H2FS is more robust against uncertainties and faster in convergence than the conventional H2S.

Sensor networks that carry heterogeneous traffics and are responsible for reporting very time-critical important events necessitate an efficient and robust data dissemination framework. Designing such a framework, that can achieve both the reliability and delay guarantee while preserving the energy efficiency, namely multi-constrained QoS (MCQoS), is a challenging problem. Although there have been many research works on QoS routing for sensor networks, to the best of our knowledge, no one addresses the above three service parameters all together. In this paper, we propose a new aggregate routing model and a distributed aggregate routing algorithm (DARA) that implements the model for achieving MCQoS. DARA is designed for multi-sink, multipath and location aware network architecture. We develop probabilistic models for multipath reliability constraint, sojourn time of a packet at an intermediary node and node energy consumption. Delay-differentiated multi-speed packet forwarding and in-node packet scheduling mechanisms are also incorporated with DARA. The results of the simulations demonstrate that DARA effectively improves the reliability, delay guarantee and energy efficiency.

An optimized Built-In Self-Test technology is proposed in this paper. A simplified algebraic model is developed to represent the configurations of single input change circuits. A novel single input change sequence generation technique is designed. It consists of a modified scan shift register, a seed storage array and a series of XOR gates. This circuitry can automatically generate single input change sequences of more unique vectors. Experimental results based on the ISCAS-89 benchmark show that the proposed method can achieve high stuck-at fault coverage with low switching activity during test applications.

A simple and successful design of initial codebook of vector quantization (VQ) is presented. For existing initial codebook algorithms, such as random method, the initial codebook is strongly influenced by selection of initial codewords and difficult to match with the features of the training vectors. In the proposed method, training vectors are sorted according to the norm of training vectors. Then, the ordered vectors are partitioned into N groups where N is the size of codebook. The initial codewords are obtained from calculating the centroid of each group. This initializtion method has a robust performance and can be combined with the VQ algorithm to further improve the quality of codebook.

In this letter, a new concept of life log retrieval using human brain activities is presented. The non-invasive electroencephalogram (EEG) recording was applied to have P300 evoked potentials during the photo retrieving tasks. Three subjects tried to select the photo images that interest them among nine according to their mental states. It was found that with four times EEG averaging, the performances of target photo selections could reach 90% for two subjects. This concept would be applicable in future to achieve intuitive retrieval of life log with large quantities of data.

This paper reports on the effect of switching action on the contact surfaces of earthquake disaster prevention relays. Large-scale earthquakes occur frequently in Japan and bring extensive damage with them, and fire caused by electrical equipments is one example of the serious damage which can occur. Earthquake sensors capable of maintaining a high level of reliability when earthquakes occur play an important role as a means of minimizing this damage. For this reason, we carried out observations by focusing on samples which had either been subjected to an electric current of 10 mA or 0.1 A. The samples of 10 mA exhibited low and constant contact resistance despite the addition of seismic motion, while the samples of 0.1 A samples exhibited varying contact resistance and damage on their contact spots resulting from the addition of seismic motion. The sample surfaces were then observed using an atomic force microscope (AFM) in tapping mode and a surface potential microscope (SPoM). As a result, we found that even the unused earthquake disaster prevention relay (standard sample) which had a surface lined with asperities on its parallel striations formed by irregular protrusions due to dust and other deposits. In addition, scanning the contact surface with the SPoM at the same potential revealed the occurrence of differences in surface potential which varied in response to the asperities on the striations.

This paper clarifies the adequacy of the linear channel coding approach for the source coding with partial side information at the decoder. A sufficient condition for an ensemble of linear codes which achieves the Wyner's bound is given. Our result reveals that, by combining a good lossy code, an LDPC code ensemble gives a good code for source coding with partial side information at the decoder.

An all-optical phase multiplexing scheme for phase-modulated signals is proposed and experimentally demonstrated using four-wave mixing (FWM) in a highly-nonlinear fiber (HNLF). Two 10-Gb/s π/2-shifted differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) signals are experimentally demonstrated to be converted and phase-multiplexed into a 20-Gb/s differential quadrature phase-shift keying (DQPSK) signal with non-return-to-zero (NRZ) and return-to-zero (RZ) formats, respectively. Experimental results show that, due to phase-modulation-depth doubling effect and phase multiplexing effect in the FWM process, a DQPSK signal is successfully generated through the proposed all-optical phase multiplexing with improved receiver sensitivity and spectral efficiency.

In this letter, we propose a partial access mechanism to be used on a register file for low-cost embedded multimedia processor architecture. In the embedded system, supporting the SIMD operations is a burden because of the wide SIMD register file and its execution unit. So a new architecture is proposed to increase the performance of SIMD operations with minimal additional hardware overhead. To evaluate the performance and hardware overhead, this architecture is adopted to an embedded multimedia processor and simulated with five DSP benchmarks. The simulation results indicate that the performance is increased by 38% and the total area is increased by 13.4%. The proposed partial access mechanism may be useful for low-cost embedded multimedia ASIP.

As GML is becoming the de facto standard for geographic data storage, transmission and exchange, more and more geographic data exists in GML format. In applications, GML documents are usually very large in size because they contain a large number of verbose markup tags and a large amount of spatial coordinate data. In order to speedup data transmission and reduce network cost, it is essential to develop effective and efficient GML compression tools. Although GML is a special case of XML, current XML compressors are not effective if directly applied to GML, because these compressors have been designed for general XML data. In this paper, we propose GPress, a compressor for effectively compressing GML documents. To the best of our knowledge, GPress is the first compressor specifically for GML documents compression. GPress exploits the unique characteristics of GML documents to achieve good performance. Extensive experiments over real-world GML documents show that GPress evidently outperforms XMill (one of the best existing XML compressors) in compression ratio, while its compression efficiency is comparable to the existing XML compressors.

As THz wave has the advantages of enough resolution and penetration to materials, it has been examined to be used for the imaging system. The propagation distance of THz wave is limited to be short. That is also the advantage for application to the indoor wireless communication etc. For the achievement of the ultra-high frequency oscillator (and concurrently transmitter) device, the properties of small, electronic excitation, the antenna constructed and being on the wafer are important. For the purpose, the Negative differential resistance Dual channel transistor (NDR-DCT) proposed by AIST is utilized. In this paper, as an initial theoretical analysis, we simulated the oscillation frequency of this device at about 100 GHz-1THz within the Terahertz band on which the above applications was expected. The equivalent circuit model of NDR-DCT was shown based on the analogy with the resonant tunnelling diode (RTDs), and the antenna as the resonance circuit part was designed by the numerical analysis. The possibility of the THz oscillation of this device was confirmed. The slit reflector that we proposed can realize the slot antenna on the device effectively and is suitable for three terminal structure semiconductor. its manufacturing is relatively easy.

In this paper, we present a new three-dimensional (3D) virtual environment (3DVE) system named "QuViE/P", which can enhance quality of service (QoS), that users actually feel, as good as possible when resources of computers and networks are limited. To realize this, we focus on characteristics of user's perceptual quality evaluation on 3D objects. We propose an effective QoS control scheme for QuViE/P by introducing relationships between system's internal quality parameters and user's perceptual quality parameters. This scheme can appropriately maintain the QoS of the 3DVE system and it is expected to improve convenience when using 3DVE system where resources are insufficient. We designed and implemented a prototype of QuViE/P using a multiagent framework. The experiment results show that even when the computer resource is reduced to 20% of the required amount, the proposed scheme can maintain the quality of important objects to a certain level.

This paper considers detection schemes for the combined space-time block coding and spatial multiplexing (STBC-SM) transmission systems. We propose a symbol detection scheme which allows to extend the limit on the number of transmit antennas imposed by the previous group detection scheme. The proposed scheme allows to double multiplexing gain as well as provides better bit error rate (BER) performance over the group detection scheme. It is shown that the proposed QR-SIC (combined QR-decomposition and successive interference cancellation) symbol detector provides good trade-off between the BER and computational complexity performance and, thus, is the most suitable detector for the combined STBC-SM system.

A low distortion and low noise differential amplifier using the difference between the even- and odd-mode impedances is proposed. In order to realize an amplifier with high OIP3 and low NF characteristics, the impedance of the bias circuit should be low (<300 Ω) at the difference frequency and high (>4 kΩ) at the carrier frequency. Although the frequency response of the bias circuit impedance can only meet these conditions with difficulty, owing to the 20 MHz Tx signal bandwidth for 3G LTE, the proposed amplifier can achieve the impedance difference using the properties of a differential configuration where the difference frequency signal is the even-mode and the carrier frequency is the odd-mode. It has been demonstrated that the NF of the proposed amplifier, which has been fabricated in 0.18 µm SiGe BiCMOS technology operating at 2.14 GHz, can be kept to 1.6 dB or less and an OIP3 of 9.0 dBm can be achieved, which is 3 dB higher than that of a conventional amplifier, in the condition where the power gain is greater than 18 dB.

Human interest in pictures dates back to 14,000 BC. Pictures can be drawn by hand or imaged by optical means. Over time pictures have changed from being rare and unique to ubiquitous and common. They have changed from treasures to transients. This paper summarizes many picture technologies, and discusses their dynamic range, their color and tone scale rendering. This paper discusses the interactions between advances in technology and the interests of its users over time. It is the combination of both technology and society's usage that has shaped imaging since its beginning and continues to do so.

For wireless receivers, low-power 1.2-V 12-bit 100-MSPS pipeline ADCs are fabricated in 90-nm CMOS technology. To achieve low-power dissipation at 1.2 V without the degradation of SNR, the configuration of 2.5 bit/stage is employed with an I/Q amplifier sharing technique. Furthermore, single-stage pseudo-differential amplifiers are used in a Sample-and-Hold (S/H) circuit and a 1st Multiplying Digital-to-Analog Converter (MDAC). The pseudo-differential amplifier with two-gain-stage transimpedance gain-boosting amplifiers realizes high DC gain of more than 90 dB with low power. The measured SNR of the 100-MSPS ADC is 66.7 dB at 1.2-V supply. Under that condition, each ADC dissipates only 55 mW.

Spatial filtering is a useful method to suppress undesired reflection from unwanted scatters in Radar Cross Section (RCS) measurements. Actually, it is difficult to prepare an ideal field which satisfies the far-field criterion for RCS measurements of large targets. We applied the filtering method to a bistatic RCS measurement in a near field and investigated the validity of that method by varying the scanning angular span. Electromagnetic simulations show that predicted RCS profiles from near-field data with unwanted scatters closely matched far-field reference data of the test target. In conclusion, the results show that the method is effective for bistatic RCS measurements in practical field enviroments.
