  • An Efficient Diagnosis Scheme for RAMs with Simple Functional Faults

    This paper presents an efficient diagnosis scheme for RAMs. Three March-based algorithms are proposed to diagnose simple functional faults of RAMs. A March-15N algorithm is used for locating and partially diagnosing faults of bit-oriented or word-oriented memories, where N represents the address number. Then a 3N March-like algorithm is used for locating the aggressor words (bits) of coupling faults (CFs) in word-oriented (bit-oriented) memories. It also can distinguish the faults which cannot be identified by the March-15N algorithm. Thus, the proposed diagnosis scheme can achieve full diagnosis and locate aggressors with (15N + 3mN) Read/Write operations for a bit-oriented RAM with m CFs. For word-oriented RAMs, a March-like algorithm is also proposed to locate the aggressor bit in the aggressor word with 4 log2B Read/Write operations, where B is the word width. Analysis results show that the proposed diagnosis scheme has higher diagnostic resolution and lower time complexity than the previous fault location and fault diagnosis approaches. A programmable built-in self-diagnosis (BISD) design is also implemented to perform the proposed diagnosis algorithms. Experimental results show that the area overhead of the BISD is small--only about 2.17% and 0.42% for 16 K8-bit and 16 K128-bit SRAMs, respectively.

  • Localized Proxy-MIPv6 with Route Optimization in IP-Based Networks

    Proxy Mobile IPv6 (PMIPv6) is designed not only to avoid tunneling overhead over the air but also to manage the mobility of hosts that are not equipped with any mobility management software. However, PMIPv6 leads to increasing signaling cost as mobile nodes move frequently because the protocol is based on the global mobility management protocol. In this letter we propose Localized PMIPv6 with Route Optimization (LPMIPv6-RO). Our numerical analysis shows that the proposed scheme outperforms previously proposed mobility protocols in terms of both signaling and packet delivery cost.

  • Ubiquitous Networks with Radio Space Extension over Broadband Networks

    Many devices are expected to be networked with wireless appliances such as radio frequency identification (RFID) tags and wireless sensors, and the number of such appliances will greatly exceed the number of PCs and mobile telephones. This may lead to an essential change in the network architecture. This paper proposes a new network architecture called the appliance defined ubiquitous network (ADUN), in which wireless appliances will be networked without network protocol standards. Radio space information rather than individual appliance signals is carried over the ADUN in the form of a stream with strong privacy/security control. It should be noted that this is different from the architectural principles of the Internet. We discuss a network-appliance interface that is sustainable over a long period, and show that the ADUN overhead will be within the scope of the broadband network in the near future.

    In these days, many dynamically reconfigurable architectures have been introduced to fill the gap between ASICs and software-programmed processors such as GPPs and DSPs. These reconfigurable architectures have shown to achieve higher performance compared to software-programmed processors. However, reconfigurable architectures suffer from a significant reconfiguration overhead and a speedup limitation. By reducing the reconfiguration overhead, the overall performance of reconfigurable architectures can be improved. Therefore, we will describe temporal partitioning, which are able to amortize the reconfiguration overhead at synthesis phase or compilation time. Our temporal partitioning methodology splits a configuration context into temporal partitions to amortize reconfiguration overhead. And then, we will present benchmark results to demonstrate the effectiveness of our methodology.

    Congestion in WSN increases the energy dissipation rates of sensor nodes as well as the loss of packets and thereby hinders fair and reliable event detection. We find that one of the key reasons of congestion in WSN is allowing sensing nodes to transfer as many packets as possible. This is due to the use of CSMA/CA that gives opportunistic medium access control. In this paper, we propose an energy efficient congestion avoidance protocol that includes source count based hierarchical and load adaptive medium access control and weighted round robin packet forwarding. We also propose in-node fair packet scheduling to achieve fair event detection. The results of simulation show our scheme exhibits more than 90% delivery ratio even under bursty traffic condition which is good enough for reliable event perception.

    This paper proposes physical channel structures and a cell search method for OFDM based radio access in the Evolved UTRA (UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access) downlink, which supports multiple scalable transmission bandwidths from 1.25 to 20 MHz. In the proposed physical channel structures, the central sub-carrier of the OFDM signal is located on the frequency satisfying the 200-kHz raster condition regardless of the transmission bandwidth of the cell site. Moreover, the synchronization channel (SCH) and broadcast channel (BCH), which are necessary for cell search, are transmitted in the central part of the entire transmission spectrum with a fixed bandwidth. In the proposed cell search method, a user equipment (UE) acquires the target cell in the cell search process in the initial or connected mode employing the SCH and possibly the reference signal, which are transmitted in the central part of the given transmission bandwidth. After detecting the target cell, the UE decodes the common control information through the BCH, which is transmitted at the same frequency as the SCH, and identifies the transmission bandwidth of the cell to be connected. Computer simulations show the fast cell search performance made possible by using the proposed SCH structure and the cell search method.

    Numerical function generators (NFGs) realize arithmetic functions, such as ex,sin(πx), and , in hardware. They are used in applications where high-speed is essential, such as in digital signal or graphics applications. We introduce the edge-valued binary decision diagram (EVBDD) as a means of reducing the delay and memory requirements in NFGs. We also introduce a recursive segmentation algorithm, which divides the domain of the function to be realized into segments, where the given function is realized as a polynomial. This design reduces the size of the multiplier needed and thus reduces delay. It is also shown that an adder can be replaced by a set of 2-input AND gates, further reducing delay. We compare our results to NFGs designed with multi-terminal BDDs (MTBDDs). We show that EVBDDs yield a design that has, on the average, only 39% of the memory and 58% of the delay of NFGs designed using MTBDDs.

  • Shrink-Wrapped Isosurface from Cross Sectional Images

    This paper addresses a new surface reconstruction scheme for approximating the isosurface from a set of tomographic cross sectional images. Differently from the novel Marching Cubes (MC) algorithm, our method does not extract the iso-density surface (isosurface) directly from the voxel data but calculates the iso-density point (isopoint) first. After building a coarse initial mesh approximating the ideal isosurface by the cell-boundary representation, it metamorphoses the mesh into the final isosurface by a relaxation scheme, called shrink-wrapping process. Compared with the MC algorithm, our method is robust and does not make any cracks on surface. Furthermore, since it is possible to utilize lots of additional isopoints during the surface reconstruction process by extending the adjacency definition, theoretically the resulting surface can be better in quality than the MC algorithm. According to experiments, it is proved to be very robust and efficient for isosurface reconstruction from cross sectional images.

    In this paper, we propose a new scheme to represent three-dimensional (3-D) dynamic scenes using a hierarchical decomposition of depth maps. In the hierarchical decomposition, we split a depth map into four types of images: regular mesh, boundary, feature point and number-of-layer (NOL) images. A regular mesh image is obtained by down-sampling a depth map. A boundary image is generated by gathering pixels of the depth map on the region of edges. For generating feature point images, we select pixels of the depth map on the region of no edges according to their influence on the shape of a 3-D surface, and convert the selected pixels into images. A NOL image includes structural information to manage the other three images. In order to render a frame of 3-D dynamic scenes, we first generate an initial surface utilizing the information of regular mesh, boundary and NOL images. Then, we enhance the initial surface by adding the depth information of feature point images. With the proposed scheme, we can represent consecutive 3-D scenes successfully within the framework of a multi-layer structure. Furthermore, we can compress the data of 3-D dynamic scenes represented by a mesh structure by a 2-D video coder.

  • A Hierarchical Service Management System for MPLS Network Services

    This paper proposes a hierarchical service management system for MPLS network services. Traditionally, general management systems which have been deployed in some service providers control MPLS LSPs (e.g. RSVP-TE, LDP) and services (e.g. L2VPN, L3VPN and IP) separately. If a fault occurs in an MPLS network, the dedicated management system for MPLS LSPs can detect the fault and recognize the state of MPLS LSPs. However, it cannot detect the extent of the impact due to the fault in each service. Furthermore, its own inability to identify the affected customer means it takes some time to identify the affected customers, cooperating manually with the dedicated management system for services. Therefore, this paper proposes a new automatic correlation between MPLS LSPs and each service. In particular, this paper proposes a new algorithm for a correlation between RSVP-TE LSPs and L3VPN services. Simulations are conducted to evaluate the capacity on a correlation table and the performance searching on a correlation table, and results show this system is very scalable within real MPLS production networks. This system, with the automatic correlation, could be sufficiently deployed in real MPLS production networks.

    The evolution of VLSI chips towards larger die size, smaller feature size and faster clock speed makes the clock distribution an increasingly important issue. In this paper, we propose a new clock distribution network (CDN), namely Variant X-Tree, based on the idea of X-Architecture proposed recently for efficient wiring within VLSI chips. The Variant X-Tree CDN keeps the nice properties of equal-clock-path and symmetric structure of the typical H-Tree CDN, but results in both a lower maximal clock delay and a lower clock skew than its H-Tree counterpart, as verified by an extensive simulation study that incorporates simultaneously the effects of process variations and on-chip inductance. We also propose a closed-form statistical models for evaluating the skew and delay of the Variant X-Tree CDN. The comparison between the theoretical results and the simulation results indicates that the proposed statistical models can be used to efficiently and rapidly evaluate the performance of the variant X-Tree CDNs.

  • Improving Search Performance: A Lesson Learned from Evaluating Search Engines Using Thai Queries

    This study initiates a systematic evaluation of web search engine performance using queries written in Thai. Statistical testing indicates that there are some significant differences in the performance of search engines. In addition to compare the search performance, an analysis of the returned results is carried out. The analysis of the returned results shows that the majority of returned results are unique to a particular search engine and each system provides quite different results. This encourages the use of metasearch techniques to combine the search results in order to improve the performance and reliability in finding relevant documents. We examine several metasearch models based on the Borda count and Condorcet voting schemes. We also propose the use of Evolutionary Programming (EP) to optimize weight vectors used by the voting algorithms. The results show that the use of metasearch approaches produces superior performance compared to any single search engine on Thai queries.

    Several approaches have been studied to cope with the exceptional features of non-segmented languages. When there is no explicit information about the boundary of a word, segmenting an input text is a formidable task in language processing. Not only the contemporary word list, but also usages of the words have to be maintained to cover the use in the current texts. The accuracy and efficiency in higher processing do heavily rely on this word boundary identification task. In this paper, we introduce some statistical based approaches to tackle the problem due to the ambiguity in word segmentation. The word boundary identification problem is then defined as a part of others for performing the unified language processing in total. To exhibit the ability in conducting the unified language processing, we selectively study the tasks of language identification, word extraction, and dictionary-less search engine.

  • A Fast Computational Optimization Method: Univariate Dynamic Encoding Algorithm for Searches (uDEAS)

    This paper proposes a new computational optimization method modified from the dynamic encoding algorithm for searches (DEAS). Despite the successful optimization performance of DEAS for both benchmark functions and parameter identification, the problem of exponential computation time becomes serious as problem dimension increases. The proposed optimization method named univariate DEAS (uDEAS) is especially implemented to reduce the computation time using a univariate local search scheme. To verify the algorithmic feasibility for global optimization, several test functions are optimized as benchmark. Despite the simpler structure and shorter code length, function optimization performance show that uDEAS is capable of fast and reliable global search for even high dimensional problems.

    A novel high-speed and area-efficient Reed-Solomon decoder is proposed, which employs pipelining architecture of minimized modified Euclid (ME) algorithm. The logic synthesis and simulation results of its VLSI implementation show that it not only can operate at a higher clock frequency, but also consumes fewer hardware resources.

  • Asymmetric Attribute Aggregation in Hierarchical Networks

    To achieve scalability and security, large networks are often structured hierarchically as a collection of domains. In hierarchical networks, the topology and QoS parameters of a domain have to be first aggregated before being propagated to other domains. However, topology aggregation may distort useful information. Although spanning tree aggregation can perfectly encode attribute information of symmetric networks, it can not be applied to asymmetric networks directly. In this paper, we propose a spanning tree based attribute aggregation method for asymmetric networks. The time complexity of the proposed method and the space complexity of its resulted aggregated topology are the same with that of the spanning tree aggregation method in symmetric networks. This method can guarantee that the attributes of more than half of the links in the networks are unaltered after aggregation. Simulation results show that the proposed method achieves the best tradeoff between information accuracy and space complexity among the existing asymmetric attribute aggregation methods.

    As the amount of recorded TV content is increasing rapidly, people need active and interactive browsing methods. In this paper, we use both text information from closed captions and visual information from video frames to generate links to enable users to easily explore not only the original video content but also augmented information from the Web. This solution especially shows its superiority when the video content cannot be fully represented by closed captions. A prototype system was implemented and some experiments were carried out to prove its effectiveness and efficiency.

  • A Half-Skewed Octree for Volume Ray Casting

    A hierarchical representation formed by an octree for a volume ray casting is a well-known data structure to skip over transparent regions requiring little preprocessing and storage. However, it accompanies unnecessary comparison and level shift between octants. We propose a new data structure named half-skewed octree, which is an auxiliary octree to support the conventional octree. In preprocessing step, a half-skewed octree selects eight different child octants in each generation step compared with the conventional octree. During rendering, after comparing an octant of the conventional octree with corresponding octant of the half-skewed octree simultaneously at the same level, a ray chooses one of two octants to jump over transparent regions farther away. By this method, we can reduce unnecessary comparison and level shift between octants. Another problem of a conventional octree structure is that it is difficult to determine a distance from the boundary of a transparent octant to opposite boundary. Although we exploit the previously proposed distance template, we cannot expect the acceleration when a ray direction is almost parallel to the octant's boundary. However, our method can solve it without additional operations because a ray selects one octant to leap farther away. As a result, our approach is much faster than the method using conventional octree while preserving image quality and requiring minimal storage.

  • Dependence of Motion of Breaking Arc on Contact Separating Speed for Ag and Pd Contact Pairs in a DC42V Resistive Circuit

    Ag and Pd electrical contact pairs are separated at constant separating speeds (5, 10 and 20 mm/s) in a DC 42 V/8.4 A resistive circuit. The motion of the breaking arc is observed with a high-speed video camera. For Ag contacts, the motion of the breaking arc becomes stable at a certain critical gap at separating speeds of 10 mm/s and 20 mm/s, and the breaking arc moves extensively at the separating speed of 5 mm/s. For Pd contacts, the breaking arc moves extensively regardless of the separating speed. These results are attributed to the following causes. For Ag contacts, the difference in the motion of arc spots at each separating speed is changed by the difference in the total energy input to the contacts. For Pd contacts, the temperature of the contact surfaces is kept high because of the lower thermal conductivity of Pd than Ag.

  • An Adaptive Resource-Based Probabilistic Search Algorithm for P2P Networks

    A novel Adaptive Resource-based Probabilistic Search algorithm (ARPS) for P2P networks is proposed in this paper. ARPS introduces probabilistic forwarding for query messages according to the popularity of the resource being searched. A mechanism is introduced to estimate the popularity and adjust the forwarding probability accordingly such that a tradeoff between search performance and cost can be made. Using computer simulations, we compare the performance of ARPS with several other search algorithms. It is shown that ARPS performs well under various P2P scenarios. ARPS guarantees a success rate above a certain level under all circumstances, and enjoys high and popularity-invariant search success rate. Furthermore, ARPS adapts well to the variation of popularity, resulting in high efficiency and flexibility.
