Since the dark channel prior (DCP)-based dehazing method is ineffective in the sky area and will cause the problem of too dark and color distortion of the image, we propose a novel dehazing method based on sky area segmentation and image fusion. We first segment the image according to the characteristics of the sky area and non-sky area of the image, then estimate the atmospheric light and transmission map according to the DCP and correct them, and then fuse the original image after the contrast adaptive histogram equalization to improve the details information of the image. Experiments illustrate that our method performs well in dehazing and can reduce image distortion.

Underwater acoustic channels (UWA) are usually sparse, which can be exploited for adaptive equalization to improve the system performance. For the shallow UWA channels, based on the proportional minimum symbol error rate (PMSER) criterion, the adaptive equalization framework requires the sparsity selection. Since the sparsity of the L0 norm is stronger than that of the L1, we choose it to achieve better convergence. However, because the L0 norm leads to NP-hard problems, it is difficult to find an efficient solution. In order to solve this problem, we choose the Gaussian function to approximate the L0 norm. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme obtains better performance than the L1 based counterpart.

Histogram equalization (HE) is the one of the simplest and most effective methods for contrast enhancement. It can automatically define the gray-level mapping function based on the distribution of gray-level included in the image. However, since HE does not use a spatial feature included in the input image, HE fails to produce satisfactory results for broad range of low-contrast images. The differential gray-level histogram (DH), which is contained edge information of the input image, was defined and the differential gray-level histogram equalization (DHE) has been proposed. The DHE shows better enhancement results compared to HE for many kinds of images. In this paper, we propose a generalized histogram equalization (GHE) including HE and DHE. In GHE, the histogram is created using the power of the differential gray-level, which includes the spatial features of the image. In HE, the mean brightness of the enhancement image cannot be controlled. On the other hand, GHE can control the mean brightness of the enhancement image by changing the power, thus, the mean brightness of the input image can be perfectly preserved while maintaining good contrast enhancement.

To improve the performance of underwater acoustic communications, this letter proposes a polar coding scheme with adaptive channel equalization, which can reduce the amount of feedback information. Furthermore, a hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) mechanism is provided to mitigate the impact of estimation errors. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme outperforms the turbo equalization in bit error rate. Computational complexity analysis is also provided for comparison.

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) allows several users to multiplex in the power-domain to improve spectral efficiency. To further improve its performance, it is desirable to reduce inter-user interference (IUI). In this paper, we propose a downlink asynchronous NOMA (ANOMA) scheme applicable to frequency-selective channels. The proposed scheme introduces an intentional symbol offset between the multiplexed signals to reduce IUI, and it employs cyclic-prefixed single-carrier transmission with frequency-domain equalization (FDE) to reduce inter-symbol interference. We show that the mean square error for the FDE of the proposed ANOMA scheme is smaller than that of a conventional NOMA scheme. Simulation results show that the proposed ANOMA with appropriate power allocation achieves a better sum rate compared to the conventional NOMA.

When collecting images, owing to the influence of shooting equipment, shooting environment, and other factors, often low-illumination images with insufficient exposure are obtained. For low-illumination images, it is necessary to improve the contrast. In this paper, a digital color image contrast enhancement method based on luminance weight adjustment is proposed. This method improves the contrast of the image and maintains the detail and nature of the image. In the proposed method, the illumination of the histogram equalization image and the adaptive gamma correction with weighted distribution image are adjusted by the luminance weight of w1 to obtain a detailed image of the bright areas. Thereafter, the suppressed multi-scale retinex (MSR) is used to process the input image and obtain a detailed image of the dark areas. Finally, the luminance weight w2 is used to adjust the illumination component of the detailed images of the bright and dark areas, respectively, to obtain the output image. The experimental results show that the proposed method can enhance the details of the input image and avoid excessive enhancement of contrast, which maintains the naturalness of the input image well. Furthermore, we used the discrete entropy and lightness order error function to perform a numerical evaluation to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Iterative block decision feedback equalization with hard-decision feedback (HD-IBDFE) was proposed for single-carrier transmission with frequency-domain equalization (SC-FDE). The detection performance hinges upon not only error propagation, but also the accuracy of estimating the parameters used to re-compute the equalizer coefficients at each iteration. In this paper, we use the erasure zone (EZ) to de-emphasize the feedback values when the hard decisions are not reliable. EZ use also enables a more accurate, and yet computationally more efficient, parameter estimation method than HD-IBDFE. We show that the resulting equalizer coefficients share the same mathematical form as that of the HD-IBDFE, thereby preserving the merit of not requiring matrix inverse operations in calculating the equalizer coefficients. Simulations show that, by using the EZ and the proposed parameter estimation method, a significant performance improvement over the conventional HD-IBDFE can be achieved, but with lower complexity.

This paper presents an analysis of the relationship between noise and bandwidth in visible light communication (VLC) systems. In the past few years, pre-emphasis and post-equalization techniques were proposed to extend the bandwidth of VLC systems. However, these bandwidth extension techniques also influence noise and sensitivity of the VLC systems. In this paper, first, we build a system model of VLC transceivers and circuit models of pre-emphasis and post-equalization. Next, we theoretically compare the bandwidth and noise of three different transceiver structures comprising a single pre-emphasis circuit, a single post-equalization circuit and a combination of pre-emphasis and post-equalization circuits. Finally, we validate the presented theoretical analysis using experimental results. The result shows that for the same resonant frequency, and for high signal-to-noise ratio (S/N), VLC systems employing post-equalization or pre-emphasis have the same bandwidth extension ability. Therefore, a transceiver employing both the pre-emphasis and post-equalization techniques has a bandwidth √2 times the bandwidth of the systems employing only the pre-emphasis or post-equalization. Based on the theoretical analysis of noise, the VLC system with only active pre-emphasis shows the lowest noise, which is a good choice for low-noise systems. The result of this paper may provide a new perspective of noise and sensitivity of the bandwidth extension techniques in VLC systems.

We propose a distributed blind equalization method for wireless sensor networks, in which a source sends data and each node performs time-domain equalization to estimate the data from a received signal that is affected by inter-symbol interference. The equalization can be performed distributively based on the mutually referenced equalization principle. Even if the nodes in the network are not fully connected to each other, the average consensus technique enables us to perform the equalization of all channels.

A class of multimodulus algorithms (MMA(p)) optimized by an optimal step-size (OS) for blind equalization are firstly investigated in this letter. The multimodulus (MM) criterion is essentially a split cost function that separately implements the real and imaginary part of the signal, hence the phase can be recovered jointly with equalization. More importantly, the step-size leading to the minimum of the MM criterion along the search direction can be obtained algebraically among the roots of a higher-order polynomial at each iteration, thus a robust optimal step-size multimodulus algorithm (OS-MMA(p)) is developed. Experimental results demonstrate improved performance of the proposed algorithm in mitigating the inter-symbol interference (ISI) compared with the OS constant modulus algorithm (OS-CMA). Besides, the computational complexity can be reduced by the proposed OS-MMA(2) algorithm.

In this letter, a new semi-blind approach incorporating the bounded nature of communication sources with the distance between the equalizer outputs and the training sequence is proposed. By utilizing the sparsity property of l1-norm cost function, the proposed algorithm can outperform the semi-blind method based on higher-order statistics (HOS) criterion especially for transmitting sources with non-constant modulus. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method shows superior performance over the HOS based semi-blind method and the classical training-based method for QPSK and 16QAM sources equalization. While for 64QAM signal inputs, the proposed algorithm exhibits its superiority in low signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) conditions compared with the training-based method.

We have proposed and developed new electro-optic modulators for the pre-equalization of signal distortion caused by the optical fiber chromatic dispersion effect. We found that the synthesis of an almost arbitrary impulse response function is obtainable by utilizing an electro-optic modulator composed of a Mach-Zehnder waveguide and travelling-wave electrodes on a ferro-electric material substrate with polarization-reversed structures. In this paper, the operational principle, design and simulation results of the pre-equalization modulator are presented. Some preliminary experimental results are also shown with future prospects.

In this paper, we propose a new enhancement method for color images. In color image processing, hue preserving is required. The proposed method is performed into HSI color space whose gamut is same as RGB color space. The differential gray-level histogram equalization (DHE) is effective for gray scale images. The proposed method is an extension version of the DHE for color images, and furthermore, the enhancement degree is variable by introducing two parameters. Since our processing method is applied to not only intensity but also saturation, the contrast and the colorfulness of the output image can be varied. It is an important issue how to determine the two parameters. Thus, we give the guideline for how to decide the two parameters. By using the guideline, users can easily obtain their own enhancement images.

In this paper, we first propose two batch blind source separation and equalization algorithms based on support vector regression (SVR) for linear time-invariant multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems. The proposed algorithms combine the conventional cost function of SVR with error functions of classical on-line algorithm for blind equalization: both error functions of constant modulus algorithm (CMA) and radius directed algorithm (RDA) are contained in the penalty term of SVR. To recover all sources simultaneously, the cross-correlations of equalizer outputs are included in the cost functions. Simulation experiments show that the proposed algorithms can recover all sources successfully and compensate channel distortion simultaneously. With the use of iterative re-weighted least square (IRWLS) solution of SVR, the proposed algorithms exhibit low computational complexity. Compared with traditional algorithms, the new algorithms only require fewer samples to achieve convergence and perform a lower residual interference. For multilevel signals, the single algorithms based on constant modulus property usually show a relatively high residual error, then we propose two dual-mode blind source separation and equalization schemes. Between them, the dual-mode scheme based on SVR merely requires fewer samples to achieve convergence and further reduces the residual interference.

Extreme learning machine (ELM) has recently attracted many researchers' interest due to its very fast learning speed, good generalization ability, and ease of implementation. However, it has a linear output layer which may limit the capability of exploring the available information, since higher-order statistics of the signals are not taken into account. To address this, we propose a novel ELM architecture in which the linear output layer is replaced by a Volterra filter structure. Additionally, the principal component analysis (PCA) technique is used to reduce the number of effective signals transmitted to the output layer. This idea not only improves the processing capability of the network, but also preserves the simplicity of the training process. Then we carry out performance evaluation and application analysis for the proposed architecture in the context of supervised classification and unsupervised equalization respectively, and the obtained results either on publicly available datasets or various channels, when compared to those produced by already proposed ELM versions and a state-of-the-art algorithm: support vector machine (SVM), highlight the adequacy and the advantages of the proposed architecture and characterize it as a promising tool to deal with signal processing tasks.

In this paper, we propose a relaying strategy for single-carrier relay networks with frequency selective channels, where each relay node delays its received signal before amplify-and-forward processing it. We propose a computationally efficient delay design method which reduces the number of delay candidates. To further reduce computational complexity, we develop a simplified delay design method which reduces the number of weight computations. Also, we extend the design method to the case where only partial channel state information of relay-to-destination channels is available. Simulation results show that the proposed relaying strategy outperforms a conventional amplify-and-forward relaying strategy and achieves the performance close to that of a more complex filter-and-forward relaying strategy. It is also shown that the proposed delay design method achieves near-optimum performance.

The growing demand for high-speed data communication has continued to meet the need for ever-increasing I/O bandwidth in recent VLSI systems. However, signal integrity issues, such as intersymbol interference (ISI) and reflections, make the channel band-limited at high-speed data rates. We propose high-speed data transmission techniques for VLSI systems using Tomlinson-Harashima precoding (THP). Because THP can eliminate ISI by inverting the characteristics of channels with limited peak and average power at the transmitter, it is suitable for implementing advanced low-voltage and high-speed VLSI systems. This paper presents a novel double-rate THP equalization technique especially intended for multi-valued data transmission to further improve THP performance. Simulation and measurement results show that the proposed THP equalization with a double sampling rate can enhance the data transition time and, therefore, improve the eye opening.

Recently, much progress has been made in the study of belief propagation (BP) based signal detection with large-scale factor graphs. When we apply the BP algorithm to equalization in a SISO multipath channel, the corresponding factor graph has many short loops and patterns in an edge connection/strength. Thus, proper convergence may not be achieved. In general, the log-likelihood ratio (LLR) oscillates in ill-converged cases. Therefore, LLR oscillation avoidance is important for BP-based equalization. In this paper, we propose applying node selection (NS) to prevent the LLR from oscillating. The NS extends the loop length virtually by a serial LLR update. Thus, some performance improvement is expected. Simulation results show that the error floor is significantly reduced by NS in the uncoded case and that the NS works very well in the coded case.

We propose a pre-filtering system for blind equalization in order to separate orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) symbols in a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) - OFDM system. In a conventional blind MIMO-OFDM equalization without the pre-filtering system, there is a possibility that originally transmitted streams are permutated, resulting in the receiver being unable to retrieve desired signals. We also note that signal permutation is different for each subcarrier. In order to solve this problem, each transmitted stream of the proposed MIMO-OFDM system is pre-filtered by a unique allpass filter. In this paper, the pre-filter is referred to as transmit tagging filter (TT-Filter). At a receiver, an inverse filter of the TT-filter is used to blindly equalize a MIMO channel without permutation problem. Further, in order to overcome the issue of phase ambiguity, this paper introduces blind phase compensation.

The impact of intersymbol interference (ISI) on single carrier frequency domain equalization with multiple input multiple output (MIMO-SCFDE) systems is severe. Most existing channel equalization methods fail to solve it completely. In this paper, given the disadvantages of the error propagation and the gap from matched filter bound (MFB), we creatively introduce a decision feedback equalizer with frequency-domain bidirectional noise prediction (DFE-FDBiNP) to tackle intersymbol interference (ISI) in MIMO-SCFDE systems. The equalizer has two-part equalizer, that is the normal mode and the time-reversal mode decision feedback equalization with noise prediction (DFE-NP). Equal-gain combining is used to realize a greatly simplified and low complexity diversity combining. Analysis and simulation results validate the improved performance of the proposed method in quasi-static frequency-selective fading MIMO channel for a typical urban environment.
