We propose a new receiving method for an information-providing system that uses LED-based traffic lights as the transmitter. We analyzed the improvements obtained when 2-dimentional image sensor replaced the conventional single-element photodiode. First, we discuss the maximum receiver's field of view (FOV) when using the 2-dimentional image sensor at a particular focal length. We analyzed the best vertical inclination for both lanes and quantified the improvements in terms of the enhancement of received signal-noise ratio (SNR) when different numbers of pixels were applied. Our results indicate that using more pixels increases the received SNR and the service area becomes wider compared to the conventional single-element system. Consequently, receivable information within the service area also increased. We also found that the optimum number of pixels to accomplish a reliable communication system is 5050 because performance degradation occured with a larger number of pixels.

As turbo decoding is a highly memory-intensive algorithm consuming large power, a major issue to be solved in practical implementation is to reduce power consumption. This paper presents an efficient reverse calculation method to lower the power consumption by reducing the number of memory accesses required in turbo decoding. The reverse calculation method is proposed for the Max-log-MAP algorithm, and it is combined with a scaling technique to achieve a new decoding algorithm, called hybrid log-MAP, that results in a similar BER performance to the log-MAP algorithm. For the W-CDMA standard, experimental results show that 80% of memory accesses are reduced through the proposed reverse calculation method. A hybrid log-MAP turbo decoder based on the proposed reverse calculation reduces power consumption and memory size by 34.4% and 39.2%, respectively.

This paper proposes a new optical access network architecture that differs from those of conventional Point-to-Point (PP) and Passive Optical Networks (PON). The proposed architecture, Optical Switched Access Network (OSAN), uses Optical Switching Modules (OSMs) that connect an Optical Line Terminal (OLT) to Optical Network Units (ONUs) in a virtual point to point configuration so that it offers the merits of both PP and PON while overcoming their demerits. Each OSM optically switches packets of variable length one by one under electrical control. To allow the elimination of optical buffers from OSM, OSAN uses the Multi-Point Control Protocol (MPCP) defined in IEEE 802.3ah. We evaluate the transmission distances between OLT and ONUs, and consider a network synchronization scheme and discovery mechanism that supports MPCP.

This letter presents a boundary-active-only (BAO) power reduction technique for cell-network-based region-growing video segmentation. The key approach is an adaptive situation-dependent power switching of each network cell, namely only cells at the boundary of currently grown regions are activated, and all the other cells are kept in low-power stand-by mode. The effectiveness of the proposed technique is experimentally confirmed with CMOS test-chips having small-scale cell networks of up to 4133 cells, where an average of only 1.7% of the cells remains active after application of the proposed approach. About 85% power reduction is thus achievable without sacrificing real-time processing.

In closed-loop multiple-input and multiple-output space-division multiplexing (MIMO-SDM) systems, allocating power among multiple transmit data streams improves the channel capacity. However, the optimum power allocation values are not always available in closed-form. For instance, when we use transmission and reception schemes that do not transfer the MIMO channel into parallel orthogonal channels (e.g., eigen-mode SDM), the signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) of each data stream at the output of the receiver is not proportional to its corresponding transmit power. This feature makes it difficult to obtain the optimal closed-form power allocation value for each data stream. Thus, in this paper, we propose an iterative power allocation scheme for MIMO-SDM systems where the SINR is not proportional to the transmit power. Furthermore, we incorporate a transmit antenna selection scheme into the proposed power allocation scheme in order to attain further capacity enhancement. Computer simulation results are provided to show the effectiveness of the proposed power allocation schemes.

In this paper, we introduce a new method for depth perception from a 2D natural scene using scale variation of patterns. As the surface from a 2D scene gets farther away from us, the texture appears finer and smoother. Texture gradient is one of the monocular depth cues which can be represented by gradual scale variations of textured patterns. To extract feature vectors from textured patterns, higher order local autocorrelation functions are utilized at each scale step. The hierarchical linear discriminant analysis is employed to classify the scale rate of the feature vector which can be divided into subspaces by recursively grouping the overlapped classes. In the experiment, relative depth perception of 2D natural scenes is performed on the proposed method and it is expected to play an important role in natural scene analysis.

In this paper we propose a novel spatial fading simulator to evaluate the performance of an array antenna and show its spatial stochastic characteristics by computer simulation based on parameters verified by experimental data. We introduce a cavity-excited circular array (CECA) as a fading simulator that can simulate realistic mobile communication environments. To evaluate the antenna array, two stochastic characteristics are necessary. The first one is the fading phenomenon and the second is the angular spread (AS) of the incident wave. The computer simulation results with respect to fading and AS show that CECA works well as a spatial fading simulator for performance evaluation of an antenna array. We first present the basic structure, features and design methodology of CECA, and then show computer simulation results of the spatial stochastic characteristics. The results convince us that CECA is useful to evaluate performance of antenna arrays.

This letter considers the signal design problems for quaternary digital communications with nonuniform sources. The designs are considered for both the average and equal energy constraints and for a two-dimensional signal space. A tight upper bound on the bit error probability (BEP) is employed as the design criterion. The optimal quarternary signal sets are presented and their BEP performance is compared with that of the standard QPSK and the binary signal set previously designed for nonuniform sources. Results shows that a considerable saving in the transmitted power can be achieved by the proposed average-energy signal set for a highly nonuniform source.

The objective of this paper is to present a decision support system which uses a computer-based procedure to detect tumor blocks or lesions in digitized medical images. The authors developed a simple method with a low computation effort to detect tumors on T2-weighted Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) brain images, focusing on the connection between the spatial pixel value and tumor properties from four different perspectives: 1) cases having minuscule differences between two images using a fixed block-based method, 2) tumor shape and size using the edge and binary images, 3) tumor properties based on texture values using spatial pixel intensity distribution controlled by a global discriminate value, and 4) the occurrence of content-specific tumor pixel for threshold images. Measurements of the following medical datasets were performed: 1) different time interval images, and 2) different brain disease images on single and multiple slice images. Experimental results have revealed that our proposed technique incurred an overall error smaller than those in other proposed methods. In particular, the proposed method allowed decrements of false alarm and missed alarm errors, which demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed technique. In this paper, we also present a prototype system, known as PCB, to evaluate the performance of the proposed methods by actual experiments, comparing the detection accuracy and system performance.

Modern digital systems design requires us to explore a large and complex design space to find a best configuration which satisfies design requirements. Such exploration requires a sound representation of design space from which design candidates are efficiently generated, each of which then is evaluated. This paper proposes a plan-generation-evaluation framework which supports a complete process of such design space exploration. The plan phase constitutes a design space of all possible design alternatives by means of a formally defined representation scheme of attributed AND-OR graph. The generation phase generates a set of candidates by algorithmic pruning of the design space in an attributed AND-OR graph with respect to design requirements as well as architectural constraints. Finally, the evaluation phase measures performance of design candidates in a pruned graph to select a best one. A complete process of cache design is exemplified to show the effectiveness of the proposed framework.

In this paper we introduce a statistical quality model for delay testing that reflects fabrication process quality, design delay margin, and test timing accuracy. The model provides a measure that predicts the chip defect level that cause delay failure, including marginal small delay. We can therefore use the model to make test vectors that are effective in terms of both testing cost and chip quality. The results of experiments using ISCAS89 benchmark data and some large industrial design data reflect various characteristics of our statistical delay quality model.

Acoustic modeling in speech recognition uses very little knowledge of the speech production process. At many levels our models continue to model speech as a surface phenomenon. Typically, hidden Markov model (HMM) parameters operate primarily in the acoustic space or in a linear transformation thereof; state-to-state evolution is modeled only crudely, with no explicit relationship between states, such as would be afforded by the use of phonetic features commonly used by linguists to describe speech phenomena, or by the continuity and smoothness of the production parameters governing speech. This survey article attempts to provide an overview of proposals by several researchers for improving acoustic modeling in these regards. Such topics as the controversial Motor Theory of Speech Perception, work by Hogden explicitly using a continuity constraint in a pseudo-articulatory domain, the Kalman filter based Hidden Dynamic Model, and work by many groups showing the benefits of using articulatory features instead of phones as the underlying units of speech, will be covered.

In ASR (Automatic Speech Recognition) applications, one of the most important issues in the real-time beamforming of microphone arrays is the inability to capture the whole acoustic dynamics via a finite-length of data and a finite number of array elements. For example, the reflected source signal impinging from the side-lobe direction presents a coherent interference, and the non-minimal phase channel dynamics may require an infinite amount of data in order to achieve perfect equalization (or inversion). All these factors appear as uncertainties or un-modeled dynamics in the receiving signals. Traditional adaptive algorithms such as NLMS that do not consider these errors will result in performance deterioration. In this paper, a time domain beamformer using H∞ filtering approach is proposed to adjust the beamforming parameters. Furthermore, this work also proposes a frequency domain approach called SPFDBB (Soft Penalty Frequency Domain Block Beamformer) using H∞ filtering approach that can reduce computational efforts and provide a purified data to the ASR application. Experimental results show that the adaptive H∞ filtering method is robust to the modeling errors and suppresses much more noise interference than that in the NLMS based method. Consequently, the correct rate of ASR is also enhanced.

An optical flow processor architecture is proposed. It offers accuracy and image-size scalability for video segmentation extraction. The Hierarchical Optical flow Estimation (HOE) algorithm [1] is optimized to provide an appropriate bit-length and iteration number to realize VLSI. The proposed processor architecture provides the following features. First, an algorithm-oriented data-path is introduced to execute all necessary processes of optical flow derivation allowing hardware cost minimization. The data-path is designed using 4-SIMD architecture, which enables high-throughput operation. Thereby, it achieves real-time optical flow derivation with 100% pixel density. Second, it has scalable architecture for higher accuracy and higher resolution. A third feature is the CMOS-process compatible on-chip 2-port DRAM for die-area reduction. The proposed processor has performance for CIF 30 fr/s with 189 MHz clock frequency. Its estimated core size is 6.025.33 mm2 with six-metal 90-nm CMOS technology.

We have clarified both theoretically and experimentally the basic performance of distributed Raman amplification (DRA) transmission systems in trunk networks with DSF or SMF spans with limited pump power where the pump power is limited by practical considerations. The gain and noise characteristics of a fiber span with splice loss are accurately determined by employing three approximation models. A novel pumping scheme called band enhanced pumping (BEP) is proposed that improves the DRA gain and optical SNR (OSNR) by 1.5 and 0.55 dB, respectively, compared with those of a conventional pumping scheme, under typical system conditions. We show that a DRA system with a DSF span has OSNRs that are 2.1 and 2.9 dB higher than those of a system with an SMF span at limited pump powers of 200 and 400 mW, respectively, as typical examples.

This paper describes a soft error hardened latch (SEH-Latch) scheme that has an error correction function in the fine process. The storage node of the latch is separated into three electrodes and a soft error on one node is collected by the other two nodes despite the large amount and long-lasting influx of radiation-induced charges. To achieve this, we designed two types of SEH-Latch circuits and a standard latch circuit using 130-nm 2-well, 3-well, and also 90-nm 2-well CMOS processes. The proposed circuit demonstrated immunity that was two orders higher through an irradiation test using alpha-particles, and immunity that was one order higher through neutron irradiation. We also demonstrated forward body bias control, which improves alpha-ray immunity by 26% for a standard latch and achieves 44 times improvement in the proposed latch.

The changes in fiber strain and fiber loss with temperature are quantitatively evaluated for 0.5 mm UV-coated fiber and three kind of fiber-optic access cables, for dropping and indoor wiring, employing 0.5 mm UV-coated fiber. Measurements of the fiber strain and loss increase are conducted using a quasi-heterodyne interferometer method and a photon-counting optical-time-domain-reflectmeter, respectively, at 1.3 and 1.55 µ m. From the strain characteristics, the following observations are made: (a) In the temperature range from -40 to 20 the fiber strain followed the cable strain quite closely, thus maintaining a tight cable structure and (b) from 20 to 80, the fiber exhibited a lower strain than the cable strain. Furthermore, no loss increase due to temperature change was observed for the 0.5-mm diameter coated fiber and the three type of optical cables.

This paper describes a new talker direction estimation method for front-end processing to capture distant-talking speech by using a microphone array. The proposed method consists of two algorithms: One is a TDOA (Time Delay Of Arrival) estimation algorithm based on a weighted CSP (Cross-power Spectrum Phase) analysis with an average speech spectrum and CSP coefficient subtraction. The other is a talker direction estimation algorithm based on ML (Maximum Likelihood) estimation in a time sequence of the estimated TDOAs. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method, talker direction estimation experiments were carried out in an actual office room. The results confirmed that the talker direction estimation performance of the proposed method is superior to that of the conventional methods in both diffused- and directional-noise environments.
