    This letter shows the results of a series of link level simulations conducted to evaluate the performances of spatial and temporal equalizers (S/T-equalizers) using field measurement data. The configuration of the spatial and temporal equalizer discussed in this letter can be expressed as a cascade of an adaptive array antenna and maximum likelihood sequence estimator (MLSE): each of the adaptive array antenna elements has a fractionally spaced tapped delay line (FTDL), and the MLSE has taps covering a portion of channel delay profile. Bit error rate (BER) performances of the S/T-equalizers are presented, and performance sensitivity to symbol timing offset is investigated.

    This paper proposes a 2.6 GHz low cost DBF array antenna system and reports its evaluation based on our experimental results. The proposed system is partially constructed by digital devices for the simplification of hardware, and employs some techniques for improving the resolution. The system is evaluated through the DOA estimation by the MUSIC algorithm inside a radio anechoic chamber. As a result, we found that the proposed system estimates the DOA with the highest accuracy at which MUSIC algorithm can perform. Moreover, this paper discusses the estimation errors. We also found that the estimation error is particularly affected from the inaccurate element interval.

  • Selective Clock Suppression of Protocol Modules for a Low Power Protocol Converter

    This letter presents a method for reducing power dissipation in a protocol converter. The communication protocol of a VLSI chip hierarchically consists of several sub-protocols and only one of them can be actively working at any given time. In general, protocol converters are implemented by dual protocols of the initially given protocols which are to be interfaced. If the duals of those sub-protocols are implemented in separate modules, we can separate active modules and inactive modules on the fly since only one of the modules can be active at a time. The active/inactive state of a module can be monitored by the control signals that represent the execution of the protocol corresponding to the module. Power reduction can be achieved by dynamically suppressing the clock supply to inactive modules. To trade-off the power reduction rate against the area overhead, the module granularity must be properly chosen. For this purpose, we implement the duals of the atomic protocols in the same module if their state graphs share states except the initial state. Our experimental results show that this method provides significant savings in power consumption of between 18.4% and 92.1% with a 5.3% area overhead.

    We examined the creep properties and hazard rates of plastic ferrules to ensure the long-term reliablity of optical fiber connections. The endface deformation ΔL had to be smaller than 3 µm to keep the insertion-loss and return-loss fluctuation to acceptable levels in the worst case of random concatenation of similarly deformed plastic ferrules. From the fluctuation data, we estimated the time-to-failure tf at which the ΔL value became 3 µm. We estimated the acceleration parameters, median lifetimes ξ, and hazard rates λ by using tf values based on Weibull statistics. The ξ values decreased rapidly with increasing temperature and relative humidity. We found we could expect small λ values of < 0.1 FIT (FIT=10-9/hour) and of 1 FIT for 20 years in a normal atmosphere (25C/50%RH) and in a more severe case of 25C/90%RH, respectively.

    Recently the effect of the angular spread caused by locally scattered signals in the vicinity of the mobile has received considerable attention. This paper proposes the Extended Array Mode Vector (EAMV) which represents the Instantaneous Angular Spread (IAS) as well as the Instantaneous Direction Of Arrival (IDOA) of the received signal at the Base Station (BS). Using the EAMV, MUSIC algorithm is generalized in order that it is possible to estimate both the IDOA and the IAS. In computer simulations, the estimates of the IDOA and the IAS in the fading situation are evaluated. The results show that the estimates for small angular spread agree well with the given values and demonstrate the validity of the proposed approach.

    This paper presents a new class of complex-valued compact-supported orthonormal symmlets. Firstly, some properties of complex-valued compact-supported orthonormal symmlets are investigated, and then it is shown that complex-valued symmlets can be generated by real-valued half-band filters. Therefore, the construction of complex-valued symmlets can be reduced to the design of real-valued half-band filters. Next, a design method of real-valued half-band FIR filters with some flatness requirements is proposed. For the maximally flat half-band filters, a closed-form solution is given. For the filter design with a given degree of flatness, the design problem is formulated in the form of linear system by using the Remez exchange algorithm and considering the given flatness condition. Therefore, a set of filter coefficients can be easily computed by solving a set of linear equations, and the optimal solution is obtained through a few iterations. Finally, some design examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

    This paper presents the characterization and validation of a time-domain physical model for illuminated high-frequency active devices and shows the possibility of use of the electromagnetic analysis of FDTD not only for electromagnetic interaction and scattering but also for the device simulation as a good candidate for a microwave simulator. The model is based on Boltzmann's Transport Equation, which accurately accounts for carrier transport in microwave and millimeter wave devices with sub-micrometer gate lengths. Illumination effects are accommodated in the model to represent carrier density changes inside the illuminated device. The simulation results are compared to available experimental records for a typical MESFET for validation purposes. Simulation results show that the microscopic as well as the macroscopic characteristics of the active device are altered by the light energy. This fact makes the model an important tool for the active device design method under illumination control.

    We describe a simplified receiver structure having several receiving antennas (i.e., an adaptive array antenna system) and using time-division-multiplexing (TDM) signal processing. Three simplified receiver structures were investigated for use in the antenna system. To confirm the feasibility of using a TDM receiver, both a TDM receiver and a conventional adaptive array receiver were constructed for testing. In our proposed system, several repetitions of the constant modulus algorithm (CMA) are used to reduce co-channel interference (CCI). The frame format used for both receivers was the same as that of the personal handy phone system in Japan. The laboratory testing was done using a fading simulator to enable measurement of the bit error rate. The results are very promising and show the feasibility of the TDM receiver.

  • QoS and Capacity Comparison of CDMA ALOHA Protocols in Multimedia Networks

    In this letter, performance evaluation of a system that combines between Code-Division Multiple Access (CDMA) and ALOHA protocol in multimedia networks is presented. In our analysis, we compare the performance between the two basic techniques of ALOHA protocol, i.e., Slotted-ALOHA (S-ALOHA) and Unslotted-ALOHA (U-ALOHA), when combined with CDMA scheme to support voice and data users operating in same CDMA channel. The quality of service (QoS) required for voice and data media is completely taken care of. We obtain the throughput of data media, and the outage probability for voice considering both voice and data offered loads. Throughput performance of S-ALOHA technique is almost twice of that of U-ALOHA. However, we show in this letter that when we combine CDMA with the two basic techniques of ALOHA to accomplish multimedia transmission, both techniques have almost same performance. And, thus, CDMA U-ALOHA can be a good candidate for multimedia networks.

  • A Study on Active Collision Avoidance System for the Road Vehicle

    A great deal of effort has been concentrated on the longitudinal control for the collision avoidance of moving vehicles. In an emergency as well as in a normal situation, however, the steering control can be a very effective alternative as observed in the practice of manual evasive driving. In the reported methods of steering control, it is found that the dynamic motions of the neighboring vehicles are often ignored, which may result in some danger of 2nd collision. Therefore, it is necessary to assess the surrounding traffic situation to prevent 2nd collision that can occur just after escaping from the 1st collision situation. In this paper, we tackle the collision avoidance problem when steering actuation control is allowed in consideration of the dynamic motion of the neighboring vehicles. Specifically, a hierarchical control scheme is suggested as a feasible solution, and the proposed system is verified via simulation using a software simulator called DevACAS (DEVeolper of Active Collision Avoidance System), which we have developed.

    The differentiated services (diffserv) architecture has been proposed for implementing scalable service differentiation in the Internet. Expedited forwarding and assured forwarding have been standardized as Per-Hop Behaviors (PHB) in diffserv. Assured forwarding can be utilized to realize the service, which provides each user with a minimum guaranteed rate and a fair share of the residual bandwidth. We call it guaranteed rate (GR) service. With GR service, each packet for flow i is marked in or out based on comparison between the sending rate and the minimum guaranteed rate. When congestion occurs in networks, out packets are dropped more aggressively than in packets. Recently, several fair queuing schemes have been proposed for core stateless networks. They can achieve fairer bandwidth allocation than random early detection (RED). However, there have not been any studies that consider in/out bit usage to support GR service. This paper proposes how to extend the schemes that have been proposed for core stateless networks to allow the support of in/out bit usage. We present the performance of one of the extended schemes and compare the scheme to RED with in/out bit (RIO) in terms of fair bandwidth allocation.

  • A Network-Supported Server Load Balancing Method: Active Anycast

    In server load balancing where replicated servers are dispersed geographically and accesses from clients are distributed to replicated servers, a way of distributing the accesses from clients to an adequate server plays an important role from the viewpoint of load balancing. In the paper, we propose a new network paradigm for server load balancing using active anycast. In active anycast, an end user only sends its request to group of servers using an anycast address. When this request arrives at an active router, it selects an adequate server from the viewpoint of load balancing and changes the anycast address of a packet to the unicast address of the selected server. The decision which server is the best one from the viewpoint of server load balancing is made by an active router rather than an end user, so active anycast is a network-initiated method. Simulation results show that active anycast can accomplish efficient server load balancing, even when a small part of routers are equipped with active network technology.

  • Diffserv-Based QoS over ATM Access Networks

    We have developed a new scheme to provide Diffserv-based QoS over ATM access networks. Well-known Diffserv over ATM scheme requires some extension for conventional routers with ATM interfaces. The routers must map their Diffserv classes of services into ATM QoS classes and forward IP packets into prioritized VCs based on DSCP (DiffServ Code Point). The purpose of this work is to provide Diffserv-based QoS over ATM network using conventional IP over ATM interfaces on routers. We propose DSCP snooping at ATM edge nodes, which differentiates services over a single VC between two IP domains. A prototype circuit was used to evaluate this scheme.

    In this paper, we propose a multi-level block matching algorithm using motion information in blocks. In the proposed algorithm, the block-level is decided by the motion degree in the block before motion searching procedure, and then adequate motion searching performs according to the block-level. Which improves computational efficiency by eliminating an unnecessary searching process in no motion or low motion regions, and brings more accurate estimation results by deepening motion searching process in high motion regions. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm brings the lower estimation error--about 20% MSE reduction--with the fewer blocks per frame and the lower computational loading--about 98% operational amount reduction--than full search block matching algorithm with constant block size.

  • Sequence Estimation for Digital FM

    Sequence estimation (SE) of narrow-band digital FM signals, such as CPFSK and GMSK, with non-coherent limiter/discriminator (L/D) and integrate and dump (I&D) detection is investigated in detail using both analysis and simulation. The BER is studied from approximate upper and lower bounds obtained through Chernoff bounding techniques and minimum error event path probability along with a Gaussian noise assumption for high SNR. Various IF filters and the dependence of the error probability upon modulation index are considered. The results show an optimum modulation index around h 0.55, and clearly demonstrate the effectiveness and limitations of sequence estimation.

  • λ-Ring System: An Application in Survivable WDM Networks of Interconnected Self-Healing Ring Systems

    This paper proposes a λ-ring system that is a wavelength-based self-healing-ring application unlike ordinary fiber-based ones. To design survivable networks of interconnected such self-healing ring systems, a virtual mesh network scheme is used, in which wavelength assignment in virtual links can be considered according to the λ-ring-system or fiber-ring-system applications of the bidirectional wavelength-path switched architecture. Integer-programming-based design problems are then formulated that minimize the total fiber length in these self-healing-ring applications. Numerical examples show that the λ-ring-system application is always superior to 4-fiber and 2-fiber-ring-system applications and 1+1 end-to-end path protection.

    Filtering and smoothing using a non-Gaussian state space model are proposed for motion trajectory of feature point in image sequence. A heavy-tailed non-Gaussian distribution is used for measurement noise to reduce the effect of outliers in motion trajectory. Experimental results are presented to show the usefulness of the proposed method.

    Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) is a basic tool of pattern recognition, and it is used in extensive fields, e.g. face identification. However, LDA is poor at adaptability since it is a batch type algorithm. To overcome this, new algorithms of online LDA are proposed in the present paper. In face identification task, it is experimentally shown that the new algorithms are about two times faster than the previously proposed algorithm in terms of the number of required examples, while the previous algorithm attains better final performance than the new algorithms after sufficient steps of learning. The meaning of new algorithms are also discussed theoretically, and they are suggested to be corresponding to combination of PCA and Mahalanobis distance.

    This paper describes a realtime 3D sound localization algorithm to be implemented with the use of a low power embedded DSP. A distinctive feature of this implementation approach is that the audible frequency band is divided into three, in accordance with the analysis of the sound reflection and diffraction effects through different media from a certain sound source to human ears. In the low, intermediate, and high frequency subbands, different schemes of the 3D sound localization are devised by means of an IIR filter, parametric equalizers, and a comb filter, respectively, so as to be run realtime on a low power embedded DSP. This algorithm aims at providing a listener with the 3D sound effects through headphones at low cost and low power consumption.

  • An Effective Flow Aggregation Algorithm for Advance Reservations

    One drawback of Integrated service architecture is the scaling problem. Therefore, flow aggregation is an important solution for supporting quality of service in large-scale network. In advance reservation, priori information of advance-reserved requests can be used for flow aggregation before their initiation time. However, an impolitic aggregation can lead to violate admission control. In this paper, we propose an effective algorithm to aggregate advance-reserved requests with guaranteed delay. The proposed algorithm not only can reduce the amount of state in core network but also minimize the bandwidth consumption. The simulation result indicates that the state in the core network can be reduced as low as 17.3% even in the worst case.
