  • A Learning Algorithm for Fault Tolerant Feedforward Neural Networks

    A new learning algorithm is proposed to enhance fault tolerance ability of the feedforward neural networks. The algorithm focuses on the links (weights) that may cause errors at the output when they are open faults. The relevances of the synaptic weights to the output error (i.e. the sensitivity of the output error to the weight fault) are estimated in each training cycle of the standard backpropagation using the Taylor expansion of the output around fault-free weights. Then the weight giving the maximum relevance is decreased. The approach taken by the algorithm described in this paper is to prevent the weights from having large relevances. The simulation results indicate that the network trained with the proposed algorithm do have significantly better fault tolerance than the network trained with the standard backpropagation algorithm. The simulation results show that the fault tolerance and the generalization abilities are improved.

    We have investigated the BER performance of TC 8PSK with 2 branch SC and MRC diversities on spatially correlated Rayleigh fading channel. The upper bounds using the transfer function bounding technique are derived several numerical results are shown. Although the correlation between branches causes signal-to-noise (SNR) loss (relative to uncorrelated fading case) for SC and MRC diversities, the diversity can lead to achieve the diversity gain compared to the system without diversity. It is found that the diversity gain of 4-state TC 8PSK is larger than 8-state TC 8PSK. It is also shown that the BER performance of TC 8PSK is decreased as the antenna separation is decreased.

    The convergence characteristics of the adaptive beamformer with the RLS algorithm are analyzed in this paper. In case of the RLS adaptive beamformer, the convergence characteristics are significantly affected by the spatial characteristics of the signals/noises in the environment. The purpose of this paper is to show how these physical parameters affect the convergence characteristics. In this paper, a typical environment where a few directional noises are accompanied by background noise is assumed, and the influence of each component of the environment is analyzed separately using rank analysis of the correlation matrix. For directional components, the convergence speed is faster for a smaller number of noise sources since the effective rank of the input correlation matrix is reduced. In the presence of background noise, the convergence speed is slowed down due to the increase of the effective rank. However, the convergence speed can be improved by controlling the initial matrix of the RLS algorithm. The latter section of this paper focuses on the physical interpretation of this initial matrix, in an attempt to elucidate the mechanism of the convergence characterisitics.

    Recurrent neural networks have the potential of performing parallel computation for associative memory and optimization, which is realized by the electronic implementation of neural networks in VLSI technology. Since the time delays in real electronic implementation of neural networks are unavoidably encountered and they can cause systems to oscillate, it is thus practically important to investigate the qualitative properties of neural networks with time delays. In this paper, a class of sufficient conditions is obtained, under which neural networks are globally asymptotically stable independent of time delays.

    This paper describes the design and performance of optical components for in-service fiber testing and monitoring in optical subscriber loops. As the number of test fibers increases, compact and cost-effective components are becoming more important. To meet this need, we have developed a highly-dense hybrid structure for optical couplers and filters, which both play key roles in testing systems. It was realized by utilizing a polyimide-base thin film filter and a waveguide-type wavelength insensitive coupler. This component operates by combining a signal and a test light with a ratio of 80/20% and isolating the test light with a value of 50 dB. The experimental samples were successfully fabricated with an excess loss of 1 dB, a return loss of 40 dB, a plolarization dependent loss (PDL) of 0.3 dB, and good environmental and mechanical stability. We successfully applied the samples to an optical branch module (OBM), and achieved a component density twice that of a conventional module. The optical characteristics of the OBM met our target values. The results we obtained for termination cords incorporating the polyimide-base filter were also satisfactory.

    In this paper, we propose a new transaction numbering scheme and a new validation scheme for controlling transactions optimistically in client-server architectural mobile distributed database systems (MDDBSs). In the system, mobile units (MUs) request transaction-related services, e.g., concurrency control, commit process, then the mobile support stations (MSSs) provide the required services. The mobile computing environment makes it very difficult for each MU to assign unique transaction number to transactions since it is allowed to move in communication disconnected states. Besides, validating transactions numbered by the previous transaction numbering scheme could wait indefinitely in the case of data transfer delay. Thus, we propose a new transaction numbering scheme called datatransfer time oriented transaction numbering scheme (DATTO) ,in which we can remove waiting time for validation by determining validation-start time with data-transfer completion time. However, if the previous validation scheme for the static environment is directly applied transactions numbered by DATTO, undesirable results could occur in abnormal cases due to latency on the wireless communication. Thus, we also propose a new validation scheme, called commit-order oriented validation (COOV) ,which is always able to produce correct results by applying backward validation to the abnormal cases.

    This paper describes packaging techniques based on a novel passive alignment technique as key techniques for module assembly. A laser diode (LD) is passively positioned by detecting a pair of alignment marks located on the LD and Si substrate. A single-mode fiber is self aligned on a Si V groove. A simple receptacle structure for the module output port is also newly designed. This structure is more suitable for the automatic assembly line as well as the module mounting process on circuit board. In this paper, an advanced module applications such as a hybrid integrated wave guide module and a surface mountable (SMT) LD module is introduced.

    A radio propagation experiment at the Okinawa Radio Observatory of the Communications Research Laboratory is investigating the feasibility of calibrating the spaceborne precipitation radar onboard the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission by using the path-averaged rainfall rate estimated from rain attenuation. Because this estimated rainfall rate has errors due to the spatial inhomogeneity of rainfall rate and the variability of raindrop size distribution, we used distrometer data to evaluate both of these errors by computer simulation.

    Recently two interesting conjectures on the linear complexity of binary complementary sequences of length 2nN0 were given by Karkkainen and Leppanen when those sequences are considered as periodic sequences with period 2nN0, where those sequences are constructed by successive concatenations or successive interleavings from a pair of kernel complementary sequences of length N0. Their conjectures were derived from numerical examples and suggest that those sequences have very large linear complexities. In this paper we give the exact formula of characteristic polynomials for those complementary sequences and show that their conjectures are true.

    In this paper, a multiuser receiver using a Hopfield network (Hopfield network receiver) for asynchronous codedivision multiple-access systems is proposed. We derive a novel likelihood function for the optimum demodulation of a data subsequence whose length is far shorter than that of the entire transmitted data sequence. It is shown that a novel Hopfield network receiver can be derived by exploiting the likelihood function, and the derived receiver leads to a low complexity receiver. The structure of the proposed receiver consists of a bank of correlators and a Hopfield network where the number of units is proportional to both the number of users and the length of a data sequence demodulated at a time. Computer simulation results are presented to compare the performance of the proposed receiver with those of the conventional multiuser detectors. It is shown that the proposed receiver significantly outperforms the correlation receiver, decorrelating detector and multistage detector, and provides suboptimum performnace.

    This paper deals with the synthesis of Petri nets. Partial languages adequately represent the concurrent behaviors of Petri nets. We first propose a construction problem for Petri nets, in which the objective is to synthesize a Petri net to exhibit the desired behavior specified as a partial language. We next discuss the solvability of this problem and last present the cutline of a solution technique.

  • Estimation of Received Signal Characteristics for Millimeter Wave Car Radar

    This paper presents a method for simply estimating characteristics of signals received by a millimeter wave car radar. In this method, the substitution of a radar target with a set of scattering points is introduced to take account of the phenomenon that only a part of the target is irradiated with the radio wave from the radar antenna with a sharp beam; the phenomenon is peculiar to the car radar which operates in a compact range. The positions of these scattering points and the RCS values for the scattering points are appropriately determined on the basis of a measured RCS image for the target. The RCS image means a spatial distribution of RCS values on the surface of the target. In addition, influence of the ground, which is a dominant clutter in car radar environments, and characteristics of the car radar hardware can be included in the estimation method. The estimated characteristics of the signal received by the car radar are compared with the measured ones under typical cases in the car radar environments. The comparison verifies not only that the received signal characteristics are well estimated even when the range is rather short but also that the substitution of the target with scattering points is valid. The proposed method can realize the estimation of the received signal characteristics. Furthermore, the method can be developed into a computer simulation for evaluating the target detection performance of the car radar.

  • Low-Power Consuming Analog-Type Matched Filter for DS-CDMA Mobile Radio

    A matched filter (Mf) based on analog filter technology for DS-CDMA mobile radio is presented. An experimental one-chip LSI of AMF is developed for measuring various areas of performance such as power consumption, cut-off frequency, and linearity. The measurements show that power consumption is only 110mW at a voltage supply of 3V and an operational clock frequency of 25 MHz. We implemented a RAKE combiner using experimental AMF LSI and measured the bit error rate (BER) performance of DS-CDMA signal transmission in a multipath fading environment.

    A complex fuzzy adaptive decision feedback equalizer based on the RLS algorithm is proposed. The proposed equalizer not only improves the performance but also reduces the computational complexity compared with the conventional complex fuzzy adaptive equalizers under the assumption of perfect knowledge of the linear and nonlinear channels.

  • Power Reduction of New Divided Layer Bitline Dual Port SRAM with a-Si/Ti Local Wiring Scheme

    The local wiring structure which is known as a technique for reducing junction capacitance due to the area reduction of the Source/Drain junction by the "on-field" contact scheme was constructed. Its effect on speed/power improvement was evaluated with a ring oscillator. A speed improvement of 15% and a 17% reduction in power dissipation was obtained as compared with conventional non-local wiring structures. This technique was applied to a practical device application, that is, a 0.35 µm embedded dual port SRAM used as a buffer memory in an asynchronous transfer mode switch (ATM-SW) LSI. In order to suppress the coupling noise between the write and read bitlines with the small cell realized by the local wiring scheme, a new divided layer 'bitline architecture was developed. As a result, reduction of SRAM macro size of 31% was attained by also applying the local wiring scheme to peripheral circuits, such as decoder, sense amplifier, and driver. A detailed analysis on this embedded dual port SRAM revealed a 15.2% reduction of write port power at 3.3 V. It is also shown that the local wiring technique is more effective with low power supply voltages to allow for further power reduction.

  • A Nonlinear Blind Adaptive Receiver for DS/CDMA Systems

    In this letter, we propose a blind adaptive receiver with nonlinear structure for DS/CDMA communication systems. The proposed receiver requires the signature waveform and timing for only the desired user. It is shown that the blind adaptation is equivalent to the adaptation with the training signal and the function to be minimized has no local minima.

  • PCHECK: A Delay Analysis Tool for High Performance LSI Design

    This paper describes new problems in delay analysis for high-performance LSI design and presents a static delay analysis tool PCHECK. PCHECK is characterized by (1) a new critical path trace algorithm for avoiding the error caused by signal transient time and (2) a precise delay calculation model for resistive shielding. Experimental results show that the delay calculation error in the worst case is less than 20 ps.

  • Detection of Targets Embedded in Sea Ice Clutter by means of MMW Radar Based on Fractal Dimensions, Wavelets, and Neural Classifiers

    The millimeter wave (MMW) radar has good compromise characteristics of both microwave radar and optical sensors. It has better angular and range resolving abilities than microwave radar, and a longer penetrating range than optical sensors. We used the MMW radar to detect targets located in the sea and among sea ice clutter based on fractals, wavelets, and neural networks. The wavelets were used as feature extractors to decompose the MMW radar images and to extract the feature vectors from approximation signals at different resolution levels. Unsupervised neural classifiers with parallel computational architecture were used to classify sea ice, sea water and targets based on the competitive learning algorithm. The fractal dimensions could provide a quantitative description of the roughness of the radar image. Using these techniques, we can detect targets quickly and clearly discriminate between sea ice, sea water, and targets.

    A requirement specification acquisition method combined with hypothesis-based reasoning and model reasoning is proposed for obtaining service specifications from the ambiguous and/or incomplete requirement specifications of communications services. Errors at an early stage of software development cost more to debug than those at a later stage. Specification acquisition is the most upstream development process. Nevertheless, the system support for specification acquisition is delayed compared with other development phases.' Users do not always have precise requirements. It is therefore inevitable that user requirements contain ambiguities, insufficiencies and even contradictions. Considering this, it is indispensable to support a specification completion method that derives service specifications from such problem requirements. This paper proposes a combined method to obtain consistent and complete specifications from such problem requirements. Communications service specifications can be described by specifying terminal behaviors which can be recognized from outside the communications system(s). Such specifications are described by a rule-based language. Requirement specifications usually have components that are ambiguous, incomplete, or even contradictory. They appear as rule description and/or missing rules. From such requirements, service specifications are obtained by using hypothesis-based reasoning on input requirements and existing service specifications. When existing specifications cannot be used to obtain complementary specifications, a communications service model is used to propose new rules. The proposed methods are implemented as a part of a communications software development system. The system enables non-experts in communications systems to define their own service specifications.
