In this letter, a method of wideband direction of arrival (DOA) estimation based on co-prime arrays with sub-Nyquist sampling is proposed. Previous works have employed co-prime arrays for wideband DOA estimation, which can increase the degrees of freedom (DOFs) in the spatial domain. However, they are all based on Nyquist sampling. Different from existing methods, we incorporate a sub-Nyquist sampling scheme called multicoset sampling for DOA estimation to relax hardware condition. Simulation results show the correctness and effectiveness.

When a massive network disruption occurs, repair of the damaged network takes time, and the recovery process involves multiple stages. We propose a fast and flow-controlled multi-stage network recovery method for determining the pareto-optimal recovery order of failed physical components reflecting the balance requirement between maximizing the total amount of traffic on all logical paths, called total network flow, and providing adequate logical path flows. The pareto-optimal problem is formulated by mixed integer linear programming (MILP). A heuristic algorithm, called the grouped-stage recovery (GSR), is also introduced to solve the problem when the problem formulated by MILP is computationally intractable in a large-scale failure. The effectiveness of the proposed method was numerically evaluated. The results show that the pareto-optimal recovery order can be determined from the balance between total network flow and adequate logical path flows, the allocated minimum bandwidth of the logical path can be drastically improved while maximizing total network flow, and the proposed method with GSR is applicable to large-scale failures because a nearly optimal recovery order with less than 10% difference rate can be determined within practical computation time.

A simple approach is presented for designing an antipodal Vivaldi antenna in this paper. A new and better estimation of the low frequency end of the operational range is shown. Final dimensions of the antenna parameters are determined by using the High Frequency Structure Simulator (HFSS). The proposed antenna has a simple configuration but exhibits low return loss, good radiation characteristics, and high and flat gain in the operating ultra wideband frequency range (3.1-10.6 GHz). Lastly, the fabrication has been done along with the specification to confirm the properties by measurements.

We propose a simple configuration for colorless and directionless (CD) reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexers that enables ultra-low contention add/drop operation to be achieved. In the configuration, we apply a combination of multiple small-port-count CD add/drop banks (CD banks) and round-robin CD bank assignment. Evaluation results show that the proposed configuration can substantially reduce intra-node contention rate, which is less than 0.1%. We also find that the proposed configuration can improve the utilization efficiency of wavelength resources and transponders. We discuss the mechanism of how the proposed configuration reduces intra-node contention by analyzing the status of wavelength assignments in direction ports and CD banks.
Performance evaluation of an improved multiband impulse radio ultra-wideband (MIR UWB) system based on sub-band selection is proposed in this paper. In the improved scheme, a data mapping algorithm is introduced to a conventional MIR UWB system, and out of all the sub-bands, only partial ones are selected to transmit information data, which can improve the flexibility of sub-bands/spectrum allocation, avoid interference and provide a variety of data rates. Given diagrams of a transmitter and receiver, the exact bit error rate (BER) of the improved system is derived. A comparison of system performance between the improved MIR UWB system and the conventional MIR UWB system is presented in different channels. Simulation results show that the improved system can achieve the same data rate and better BER performance than the conventional MIR UWB system under additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN), multipath fading and interference coexistence channels. In addition, different data transmission rates and BER performances can be easily achieved by an appropriate choice of system parameters.

We propose a novel single polarization photonic band gap fiber (SP-PBGF) with an anisotropic air hole lattice in the core. An SP-PBGF with an elliptical air hole lattice in the core recently proposed can easily realize SP guidance utilizing the large difference of cutoff frequency for the x- and y-polarized modes. In this paper, in order to achieve SP guidance based on the same principle of this PBGF, we utilize an anisotropic lattice of circular air holes instead of elliptical air holes to ease the fabrication difficulty. After investigating the influence of the structural parameters on SP guidance, it is numerically demonstrated that the designed SP-PBGF has 381 nm SP operating band.

A frequency-reconfigurable dipole antenna, whose dual resonant frequencies are independently controlled, is introduced. The antenna's conductor consists of radiating conductors, lumped and distributed elements, and varactors. To design the antenna, current distribution, input impedance, and radiation power including higher-order modes, are analyzed for a narrow-angle sectorial antenna embedded with passive elements. To derive the formulae used, radiation power is analyzed in two ways: using Chu's equivalent circuit and the multipole expansion method. Numerical estimations of electrically small antennas show that dual-band antennas are feasible. The dual resonant frequencies are controlled with the embedded series and shunt inductors. A dual-band antenna is fabricated, and measured input impedances agree well with the calculated data. With the configuration, an electrically small 2.5-/5-GHz dual-band reconfig-urable antenna is designed and fabricated, where the reactance values for the series and shunt inductors are controlled with varactors, each connected in series to the inductors. Varying the voltages applied to the varactors varies the measured upper and lower resonant frequencies between 2.6 and 2.9GHz and between 5.1 and 5.3GHz, where the other resonant frequency is kept almost identical. Measured radiation patterns on the H-plane are almost omni-directional for both bands.
A triplexer is presented by using bandpass filters (BPFs) which consist of two-stage of wideband resonator and additional open-circuited stubs. The resonator is firstly proposed by using a coupled-line and an inductive element loaded transmission line. This resonator produces the wide passband by a dual-mode resonance, high attenuation level at stopbands, and the steepness at the edge of the passband due to the attenuation poles. In order to understand the behavior of the resonator, the conditions for resonances and attenuation poles are especially solved and their current densities are analyzed by an electromagnetic simulation. Secondly, three types of wideband BPFs are constituted and finally a wideband triplexer is composed by using these BPFs. The basic characteristics of the proposed BPFs and the matching methodology enable to realize the triplexer whose desired passbands are around 3.1-5.1 GHz, 5.85-7.85 GHz, and 8.6-10.6 GHz with high isolation performance at the other passbands. The proposed triplexer is predominance in the flexible bandwidth or wide operating frequency range. All the BPFs and the triplexer are implemented on a planar printed circuit board assuming the use of the microstrip line structure.

A compact millimeter-wave three-pole dual-band bandpass filter (BPF) by using substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW) dual-mode cavities is developed in this paper. The proposed filter consists of three SIW dual-mode cavities, in which the TE201 and TE102 modes are used to form two passbands. The center frequencies of the two passbands can be readily changed by varying the lengths and/or widths of the SIW cavities. Meanwhile three transmission zeros are produced with appropriate design of the input and output of the SIW cavities, which increase significantly the isolation between the two passbands and their roll-off rate of attenuations. The dual-band BPF filter is designed, fabricated and measured. The measured center frequencies of the two passbands are 26.75GHz and 31.55GHz, respectively. The 3dB-passbands are 26.35-27.15GHz (3%) and 31.29-31.81GHz (1.6%), respectively, with maximum insertion loss of 2.64dB and 4.2dB, respectively, and return loss larger than 12dB in both passbands. A good agreement between the simulated and measured filter characteristics is obtained.

Two plasmonic band-bass filters are analyzed: one is a grating-type filter and the other is a slit-type filter. The former shows a band-pass characteristic with a high transmission for a two-dimensional structure, while the latter exhibits a high transmission even for a three-dimensional structure with a thin metal layer.

A CMOS bandgap reference circuit without resistors, which can successfully operate under 1V supply voltage is proposed. The improvement is realized by the technique of the voltage divider and a new current source. The most attractive merit is that the proposed circuit breaks the bottleneck of low supply voltage design caused by the constant bandgap voltage value (1.25V). Moreover, the temperature coefficient of the reference voltage Vref is improved by compensating the temperature dependence caused by the current source. The simulation results using a standard CMOS 0.18 um process show that the value of Vref can be achieved around 0.5 V with a minimum supply voltage of 0.85 V. Meanwhile, the temperature coefficient of the output voltage is only 3.5ppm/°C from 0 °C to 70 °C.
This paper focuses on the bandwidth allocation methods based on real user experience for web browsing applications. Because the Internet and its services are rapidly increasing, the bandwidth allocation problem has become one of the typical challenges for Internet service providers (ISPs) and network planning with respect to providing high service quality. The quality of experience (QoE) plays an important role in the success of services, and the guarantee of QoE accordingly represents an important goal in network resource control schemes. To cope with this issue, this paper proposes two user-centric bandwidth resource allocation methods for web browsing applications. The first method dynamically allocates bandwidth by considering the same user's satisfaction in terms of QoE with respect to all users in the system, whereas the second method introduces an efficient trade-off between the QoE of each user group and the average QoE of all users. The purpose of these proposals is to provide a flexible solution to reasonably allocate limited network resources to users. By considering service quality from real users' perception viewpoint, the proposed allocation methods enable us to understand actual users' experiences. Compared to previous works, the numerical results show that the proposed bandwidth allocation methods achieve the following contributions: improving the QoE level for dissatisfied users and providing a fair distribution, as well as retaining a reasonable average QoE.
An extended harmonic disturbance observer is designed for speed (or position) sensorless current control of DC motor subject to a biased sinusoidal disturbance and parameter uncertainties. The proposed method does not require the information on the mechanical part of the motor equation. Theoretical analysis via the singular perturbation theory is performed to verify that the feedforward compensation using the estimation can improve the robust transient performance of the closed-loop system. A stability condition is derived against parameter uncertainties. Comparative experimental results validate the robustness of the proposed method against the uncertainties.

A novel scheme to implement a filter bank multicarrier/offset quadrature amplitude modulation (FBMC/OQAM) transmission system is proposed. This is achieved by replacing the existing polyphase filter banks based on FFT/IFFT with fast filter bank (FFB) in order to utilize its good properties such as cascaded structure and high frequency selectivity with a comparable complexity as FFT/IFFT. Although this topic is not addressed in the literature, the impulse response of the prototype filter for each stage within FFB can still be obtained by using an optimization technique, which is used to minimize the distortion caused by intersymbol and interchannel interferences (ISI and ICI) of the proposed FBMC/OQAM transmission system, subject to allowable ripples in the passband and stopband. As a result, the relationship between two-path prototype filters in each subfilter should be modified with a general form accordingly. Simulations show that the number of multiplications required by the proposed scheme is smaller than that needed by the polyphase filter banks solution based on FFT/IFFT. Furthermore, the suitability of the design of prototype filters and the validation can be also supported by the results.

In this paper, we propose a channel-unaware algorithm to suppress the narrowband interference (NBI) for the time synchronization, where multiple antennas are equipped at the receiver. Based on the fact that the characteristics of synchronization signal are different from those of NBI in both the time and spatial domain, the proposed algorithm suppresses the NBI by utilizing the multiple receive antennas in the eigen domain of NBI, where the eigen domain is obtained from the time domain statistical information of NBI. Because time synchronization involves incoherent detection, the proposed algorithm does not use the desired channel information, which is different from the eigen domain interference rejection combining (E-IRC). Simulation results show, compared with the traditional frequency domain NBI suppression technique, the proposed algorithm has about a 2 dB gain under the same probability of detection.

This paper proposes 1-bit feedforward distortion compensation for digital radio frequency conversion (DRFC) with 1-bit bandpass delta-sigma modulation (BP-DSM). The 1-bit BP-DSM allows direct RF signal transmission from a digitally modulated signal. However, it has been previously reported that 1-bit digital pulse trains with non-ideal rectangle waveform cause spectrum regrowth. The proposed architecture adds a feedforward path with another 1-bit BP-DSM and so can cancel out the distortion components at any target carrier frequency. Both the main signal and the distortion compensation signal are 1-bit digital pulse trains and so no additional analog RF circuit is required for distortion compensation. Simulation results show that the proposed method holds the adjacent channel leakage ratio to 60dB for LTE signal transmission. A prototype of the proposed 1-bit DRFC with an additional 1-bit BP-DSM in the feedforward path shows an ACLR of 50dB, 4dB higher than that of the conventional 1-bit DRFC.

In this letter, a new scheme for multirate coprime sampling and reconstructing of sparse multiband signals with very high carrier frequencies is proposed, where the locations of the signal bands are not known a priori. Simulation results show that the new scheme can simultaneously reduce both the number of sampling channels and the sampling rate for perfect reconstruction, compared to the existing schemes requiring high number of sampling channels or high sampling rate.

The threshold voltage variations for actual size MOSFETs obtained by capacitance measurement are compared with those obtained by the current measurement, and their differences are studied for the first time. It is found that the threshold voltage variations obtained by the capacitance measurement show the similar behavior to those current measurement and the absolute value is less than those obtained by the current measurement. The reason for the difference is partially explained by that the local channel dopant non-uniformity along the current path makes the threshold voltage variation obtained from current measurement larger. It is found that the flat-band voltage variations, which are obtained from the measured C-V curves, are small and not significant to the threshold voltage variation.

In this paper, a novel approach of a human motion classification system in wireless body area network (WBAN) using received radio signal strength was developed. This method enables us to classify human motions in WBAN using only the radio signal strength during communication without additional tools such as an accelerometer. The proposed human motion classification system has a potential to be used for improving communication quality in WBAN as well as recording daily-life activities for self-awareness tool. To construct the classification system, a numerical simulation was used to generate WBAN propagation channel in various motions at frequency band of 403.5MHz and 2.45GHz. In the classification system, a feature vector representing a characteristic of human motions was computed from time-series received signal levels. The proposed human motion classification using the radio signal strength based on WBAN simulation can classify 3-5 human motions with the accuracy rate of 63.8-95.7 percent, and it can classify the human motions regardless of frequency band. In order to confirm that the human motion classification using radio signal strength can be used in practice, the applicability of the classification system was evaluated by WBAN measurement data.
