In this Letter, a robust variable step-size affine-projection subband adaptive filter algorithm (RVSS-APSAF) is proposed, whereby a band-dependent variable step-size is introduced to improve convergence and misalignment performances in impulsive noise environments. Specifically, the weight vector is adaptively updated to achieve robustness against impulsive noises. Finally, the proposed RVSS-APSAF algorithm is tested for system identification in an impulsive noise environment.

This paper improves radiation patterns and impedance matching of a broadband sleeve dipole antenna. A broadband sleeve dipole antenna is designed and the effect of the structure parameters on the |S11| characteristics is calculated. Current distributions of the resonance frequencies are calculated. A broadband sleeve dipole antenna with plate element is proposed. Better impedance matching is obtained by adjusting the size of the plate element. The nulls of the radiation patterns are reduced at high frequencies and the gain in the horizontal direction is improved.

Stochastic resonance can improve the signal-to-noise ratio of digital baseband signals. However, the output of SR system needs some time for evolution to achieve global steady-state. This paper first analyzes the evolution time of SR systems, which is an important factor for digital baseband signal processing based on SR. This investigation shows that the sampling number per symbol should be rather large, and the minimum sampling number per symbol is deduced according to the evolution time of SR system.

Capital expenditure (CAPEX) reduction and efficient wavelength allocation are critical for the future access networks. Elastic lambda aggregation network (EλAN) based on WDM and OFDM technologies is expected to realize efficient wavelength allocation. In this paper, we propose adaptive bandwidth allocation (ABA) algorithm for EλAN under the conditions of crowded networks, in which modulation format, symbol rate and the number of sub-carriers are adaptively decided based on the distance of PON-section, QoS and bandwidth demand of each ONU. Network simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can effectively reduce the total bandwidth and achieve steady high spectrum efficiency and contribute to the further reduction of CAPEX of future optical access networks.

In this paper we propose the Zone-based Energy Aware data coLlection (ZEAL) protocol. ZEAL is designed to be used in agricultural applications for wireless sensor networks. In these type of applications, all data is often routed to a single point (named “sink” in sensor networks). The overuse of the same routes quickly depletes the energy of the nodes closer to the sink. In order to minimize this problem, ZEAL automatically creates zones (groups of nodes) independent from each other based on the trajectory of one or more mobile sinks. In this approach the sinks collects data queued in sub-sinks in each zone. Unlike existing protocols, ZEAL accomplish its routing tasks without using GPS modules for location awareness or synchronization mechanisms. Additionally, ZEAL provides an energy saving mechanism on the network layer that puts zones to sleep when there are no mobile sinks nearby. To evaluate ZEAL, it is compared with the Maximum Amount Shortest Path (MASP) protocol. Our simulations using the ns-3 network simulator show that ZEAL is able to collect a larger number of packets with significantly less energy in the same amount of time.

Two wideband circularly polarized (CP) equilateral triangular slot (ETS) antennas are proposed for communication system and the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Radio Occultation (RO) sensor of the GAIA-I microsatellite. These wide slot antennas use the ring slot antenna CP generation method due to their shape. The compact antennas employ truncated corners, grounded equilateral triangular perturbation patch and branched feed line to create CP radiation. A 3-dB axial ratio bandwidth (ARBW) enhancement is achieved by inserting a pair of slits into the ETS. A parametric study on the influence of those shape modifications in reflection coefficient and axial ratio is presented. An ETS antenna for communication system of the GAIA-I is fabricated and measured, which is shown to agree well with its simulated performance by providing CP fractional bandwidth of 52%. An ETS antenna designed for the GNSS RO sensor of GAIA-I delivers 3-dB ARBW of 41.6%. The ETS antenna offers uni-directional radiation by mounting a 3D printed truncated cone reflector underneath which also enhances antenna gain.
IoT (Internet of Things) services are emerging and the bandwidth requirements for rich media communication services are increasing exponentially. We propose a virtual edge architecture comprising computation resource management layers and path bandwidth management layers for easy addition and reallocation of new service node functions. These functions are performed by the Virtualized Network Function (VNF), which accommodates terminals covering a corresponding access node to realize fast VNF migration. To increase network size for IoT traffic, VNF migration is limited to the VNF that contains the active terminals, which leads to a 20% reduction in the computation of VNF migration. Fast dynamic bandwidth allocation for dynamic bandwidth paths is realized by proposed Hierarchical Time Slot Allocation of Optical Layer 2 Switch Network, which attain the minimum calculation time of less than 1/100.

Cloud computing, which enables users to enjoy various Internet services provided by data centers (DCs) at anytime and anywhere, has attracted much attention. In cloud computing, however, service quality degrades with user distance from the DC, which is unfair. In this study, we propose a bandwidth allocation scheme based on collectable information to improve fairness and link utilization in DC networks. We have confirmed the effectiveness of this approach through simulation evaluations.

We propose a policy UCB-SC for budgeted multi-armed bandits. The policy is a variant of recently proposed KL-UCB-SC. Unlike KL-UCB-SC, which is computationally prohibitive, UCB-SC runs very fast while keeping KL-UCB-SC's asymptotical optimality when reward and cost distributions are Bernoulli with means around 0.5, which are verified both theoretically and empirically.

We present a design approach and analysis of a multimode stripline resonator (MSR). Furthermore, a bandpass filter (BPF) using a single MSR is presented. MSR has three fundamental modes, incorporating two transmission resonance modes and one quasi-lumped component (LC) resonance mode. The resonant frequencies and unloaded Q factors of those modes are theoretically derived by transmission modes and LC modes. By our equations, it is also explained that the resonant frequencies can be shown to be easily handled by an increase and decrease in the number of via holes. These frequencies calculated by our equations are in good agreement with those of 3-D simulations and measurements. Finally, design approach of a narrow bandpass filter using our resonator is introduced. Good agreement between measured and computed result is obtained.

This paper presents a new form of gap waveguide technology - the half-height-pin gap waveguide. The gap waveguide technology is a new transmission line technology introduced recently, which makes use of the stopband of wave propagation created by a pair of parallel plates, one PEC (perfect electric conductor) and one PMC (perfect magnetic conductor), with an air gap in between less than a quarter of the wavelength at operation frequency. Applying this PEC/PMC gap plate structure to ridged waveguides, rectangular hollow waveguides and microstrip lines, we can have the ridged gap waveguides, groove gap waveguides and inverted gap waveguide microstrip lines, respectively, without requiring a conductive or galvanic contact between the upper PEC and the lower PMC plates. This contactless property of the gap waveguide technology relaxes significantly the manufacturing requirements for devices and antennas at millimeter wave frequencies. PMC material does not exist in nature, and an artificial PMC boundary can be made by such as periodic pin array with the pin length about a quarter wavelength. However, the quarter-wavelength pins, referred to as the full-height pins, are often too long for manufacturing. In order to overcome this difficulty, a new half-height-pin gap waveguide is introduced. The working principles and Q factors for the half-height-pin gap waveguides are described, analyzed and verified with measurements in this paper. It is concluded that half-height-pin gap waveguides have similar Q factors and operation bandwidth to the full-height-pin gap waveguides. As an example of the applications, a high gain planar array antenna at V band by using the half-height-pin gap waveguide has been designed and is presented in the paper with a good reflection coefficient and high aperture efficiency.

Identification of urban road targets using radar systems is usually heavily dependent on the aspect angle between the target velocity and line of sight of the radar. To improve the performance of the classification result when the target is in a cross range position relative to the radar, a method based on range micro Doppler signature is proposed in this paper. Joint time-frequency analysis is applied in every range cell to extract the time Doppler signature. The spectrograms from all of the target range cells are combined to form the range micro Doppler signature to allow further identification. Experiments were conducted to investigate the performance of the proposed method, and the results proved the effectiveness of the method presented.

This paper describes analytical results obtained for floor penetration loss characteristics and their frequency dependency by measurements in multiple frequency bands, including those above 6GHz, in an indoor office environment. Measurement and analysis results confirm that the floor penetration loss depends on two dominant components: the transmission path through floors, and the path traveling through the outside building. We also clarify that these dominant paths have different path loss characteristics and frequency dependency. The transmission path through floors rapidly attenuates with large inter-floor offsets and in high frequency bands. On the other hand, the path traveling through outside of the building attenuates monotonically as the frequency increases. Therefore, the transmission path is dominant at short inter-floor offsets and low frequencies, and the path traveling through the outside is dominant at high number of floors or high frequency. Finally, we clarify that the floor penetration loss depends on the frequency dependency of the dominant path on the basis of the path loss characteristics of each dominant path.

Aiming at solving the performance degradation caused by the covariance matrix mismatch in wideband beamforming for conformal arrays, a novel adaptive beamforming algorithm is proposed in this paper. In this algorithm, the interference-plus-noise covariance matrix is firstly reconstructed to solve the desired signal contamination problem. Then, a sparse reconstruction method is utilized to reduce the high computational cost and the requirement of sampling data. A novel cost function is formulated by the focusing matrix and singular value decomposition. Finally, the optimization problem is efficiently solved in a second-order cone programming framework. Simulation results using a cylindrical array demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed algorithm and prove that this algorithm can achieve superior performance over the existing wideband beamforming methods for conformal arrays.

In this paper, we propose a new structure for a compact matched filter bank (MFB) for an optical zero-correlation zone (ZCZ) sequence set with Zcz=2z. The proposed MFB can reduces operation elements such as 2-input adders and delay elements. The number of 2-input adders decrease from O(N2) to O(N log2 N), delay elements decrease from O(N2) to O(N). In addition, the proposed MFBs for the sequence of length 32, 64, 128 and 256 with Zcz=2,4 and 8 are implemented on a field programmable gate array (FPGA). As a result, the numbers of logic elements (LEs) of the proposed MFBs for the sequences with Zcz=2 of length 32, 64, 128 and 256 are suppressed to about 76.2%, 84.2%, 89.7% and 93.4% compared to that of the conventional MFBs, respectively.

We propose a wideband antenna that has both vertical and horizontal polarization to create access points with enhanced connectivity. The antenna is composed of a rectangular plate and a ground plate, and the rectangular plate is fed sideways from the ground plate. Its -10dB fractional bandwidth is approximately 162%. It is shown that the offset feed of the rectangular plate is important to attain wideband impedance matching and vertical polarized wave. The results of a parametric study to characterize the first- and second-lowest resonant frequencies are presented. Moreover, the behavior of the impedance matching and polarization is interpreted by dividing the current distribution around the feed port on the rectangular plate into the same direction current mode and the opposite direction current mode. The measured results for the return loss and the radiation pattern of a prototype antenna agree well with the simulation results, therefore the wideband property was experimentally confirmed.

The illegal parking of bicycles is a serious urban problem in Tokyo. The purpose of this study was to sustainably build Linked Open Data (LOD) to assist in solving the problem of illegally parked bicycles (IPBs) by raising social awareness, in cooperation with the Office for Youth Affairs and Public Safety of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government (Tokyo Bureau). We first extracted information on the problem factors and designed LOD schema for IPBs. Then we collected pieces of data from the Social Networking Service (SNS) and the websites of municipalities to build the illegally parked bicycle LOD (IPBLOD) with more than 200,000 triples. We then estimated the temporal missing data in the LOD based on the causal relations from the problem factors and estimated spatial missing data based on geospatial features. As a result, the number of IPBs can be inferred with about 70% accuracy, and places where bicycles might be illegally parked are estimated with about 31% accuracy. Then we published the complemented LOD and a Web application to visualize the distribution of IPBs in the city. Finally, we applied IPBLOD to large social activity in order to raise social awareness of the IPB issues and to remove IPBs, in cooperation with the Tokyo Bureau.

This paper presents a calibration method for RF switch channels of a near-range multistatic linear array radar. The method allows calibration of the channel transfer functions of the RF switches and antenna transfer functions in frequency domain data, without disconnecting the antennas from the radar system. In addition, the calibration of the channels is independent of the directivities of the transmitting and receiving antennas. We applied the calibration method to a 3D imaging step-frequency radar system at 10-20GHz suitable for the nondestructive inspection of the walls of wooden houses. The measurement range of the radar is limited to 0-240mm, shorter than the antenna array length 480mm. This radar system allows acquiring 3D imaging data with a single scan. Using synthetic aperture radar processing, the structural health of braces inside the walls of wooden houses can be evaluated from the obtained 3D volume images. Based on experiment results, we confirmed that the proposed calibration method significantly improves the subsurface 3D imaging quality. Low intensity ghost images behind the brace target were suppressed, deformations of the target in the volume image were rectified and errors the range distance were corrected.
This paper describes a parametric representation of ultra-wideband radar signatures and its physical interpretation. Under the scattering theory of electromagnetic waves, a transfer function of radar scattering is factorized into three elementary parts and a radar signature with three parameters is derived. To use these parameters for radar target classification and identification, the relation between them and the response waveform is analytically revealed and numerically checked. The result indicates that distortion of the response waveform is sensitive to these parameters, and thus they can be expected to be used as features for radar target classification and identification.
