  • Anonymous Authentication Scheme without Verification Table for Wireless Environments

    Lee and Kwon proposed an anonymous authentication scheme based on Zhu et al.'s scheme. However, Lee et al.'s scheme has two disadvantages. Firstly, their scheme is vulnerable to off-line dictionary attacks. An adversary can guess a user password from the user's login messages eavesdropped by the adversary. Secondly, an authentication server called a home agent requires a verification table, which violates the original advantage of Zhu et al.'s scheme. That is, it increases the key management costs of the home agent. In this letter, we show the weaknesses of Lee et al.'s scheme and another three existing schemes. Then, we propose a new secure scheme without the verification table, while providing security for off-line dictionary attacks and other attacks except for a certain type of combined attacks.

  • A Hybrid Photonic Burst-Switched Interconnection Network for Large-Scale Manycore System

    With the trend towards increasing number of cores, for example, 1000 cores, interconnection network in manycore chips has become the critical bottleneck for providing communication infrastructures among on-chip cores as well as to off-chip memory. However, conventional on-chip mesh topologies do not scale up well because remote cores are generally separated by too many hops due to the small-radix routers within these networks. Moreover, projected scaling of electrical processor-memory network appears unlikely to meet the enormous demand for memory bandwidth while satisfying stringent power budget. Fortunately, recent advances in 3D integration technology and silicon photonics have provided potential solutions to these challenges. In this paper, we propose a hybrid photonic burst-switched interconnection network for large-scale manycore processors. We embed an electric low-diameter flattened butterfly into 3D stacking layers using integer linear programming, which results in a scalable low-latency network for inter-core packets exchange. Furthermore, we use photonic burst switching (PBS) for processor-memory network. PBS is an adaptation of optical burst switching for chip-scale communication, which can significantly improve the power efficiency by leveraging sub-wavelength, bandwidth-efficient optical switching. Using our physically-accurate network-level simulation environment, we examined the system feasibility and performances. Simulation results show that our hybrid network achieves up to 25% of network latency reduction and up to 6 times energy savings, compared to conventional on-chip mesh network and optical circuit-switched memory access scheme.

    A high-speed low-complexity time-multiplexing Reed-Solomon-based forward error correction architecture based on the pipelined truncated inversionless Berlekamp-Massey algorithm is presented in this paper. The proposed architecture has very high speed and very low hardware complexity compared with conventional Reed-Solomon-based forward error correction architectures. Hardware complexity is improved by employing a truncated inverse Berlekamp-Massey algorithm. A high-speed and high-throughput data rate is facilitated by employing a three-parallel processing pipelining technique and modified syndrome computation block. The time-multiplexing method for pipelined truncated inversionless Berlekamp-Massey architecture is used in the parallel Reed-Solomon decoder to reduce hardware complexity. The proposed architecture has been designed and implemented with 90-nm CMOS technology. Synthesis results show that the proposed 16-channel Reed-Solomon-based forward error correction architecture requires 417,600 gates and can operate at 640 MHz to achieve a throughput of 240 Gb/s. The proposed architecture can be readily applied to Reed-Solomon-based forward error correction devices for next-generation short-reach optical communications.

  • Interference Avoidance Using Uneven Intensity Spreading Scheme for OCDMA

    We propose an interference avoidance architecture using uneven spreading as a media access mechanism for optical code division multiple access (OCDMA). While an equal-intensity pulse sequence encoded with the spreading sequence assigned to each node is transmitted for a “1” bit in conventional OCDMA with on-off keying (OOK), the proposed architecture creates an uneven-intensity pulse sequence where one of the pulses has higher intensity than the others. The high-intensity pulse allows source nodes to use increased sensing threshold for channel sensing, which leads to an increase in the number of chip offsets available for collision-free transmission. Our receiver with a hard limiter (HL) allows destination nodes to receive the transmission without false positives. Interference avoidance performance is examined by deriving the collision probability and comparing it with the conventional interference avoidance with equal-intensity spreading. Our numerical results show that our architecture has lower collision probability, shorter time required for channel sensing, higher throughput, higher bit rate, and supports more nodes than the conventional one for a fixed collision probability.

  • Post-Compensation Technique for Carrier Superposed Satellite Channel Including Nonlinear TWTA

    For effective use of the frequency band, carrier superposing (common band) technique has been introduced to satellite communication systems. On the other hand, satellite's TWTA (Traveling Wave Tube Amplifier) should be operated near its saturation level for power efficiency. However, the TWTA nonlinearity characteristics around that level causes interference in carrier superposing systems. Therefore in this paper, a post-compensation technique for TWTA nonlinear distortion is introduced and verified for practical use in a carrier superposed Point to Point satellite communication system which adopts interference canceller. Simulation results show that it is possible to reduce the bit error rate degradation over the entire range, especially at nonlinear operating point.

    This paper proposes a new channel allocation algorithm for satellite communication systems. The algorithm is based on a spectrum division transmission technique as well as a spectrum compression transmission technique that we have developed in separate pieces of work. Using these techniques, the algorithm optimizes the spectrum bandwidth and a MODCOD (modulation and FEC error coding rate) scheme to balance the usable amount of satellite transponder bandwidth and satellite transmission power. Moreover, it determines the center frequency and bandwidth of each divided subspectra depending on the unused bandwidth of the satellite transponder bandwidth. As a result, the proposed algorithm enables flexible and effective usage of satellite resources (bandwidth and power) in channel allocations and thus enhances satellite communication (SATCOM) system capacity.

    Without recourse to the Shannon-Nyquist sampling theorem, a novel information sampling (IS) concept is proposed for ultra-wideband (UWB) communications. To implement IS, a random pre-coding system architecture is designed and system performance is studied. Simulation results from one of UWB channel models show that the proposed system is effective to detect UWB signals with a low-sampling-rate analog-to-digital converter (ADC) at the receiver. Moreover, it can operate in a regime of heavy inter-symbol interference (ISI).

    In this paper, we focus on the cancellation of interference among Destination Users (DU's) and the improvement of achievable sum rate of the nonregenerative multiuser Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) relay downlink system. A novel design method of transmit weight is proposed to successively eliminate the interference among DU's, each of which is equipped with multiple receive antennas. We firstly investigate the transmit weight design for the Amplify-and-Forward (AF) relay scheme where the Relay Station (RS) just retransmits the received signals from Base Station (BS), then extend it to the joint design scheme of transmit weights at the both BS and RS. In the proposed joint design scheme, through the comparison of lower bound of achievable rate, an effective DU selection algorithm is proposed to generate the transmit weight at the RS and obtain the multiuser diversity. Dirty Paper Coding (DPC) technique is employed to remove the interference among DU's and ensures the achievable rate of downlink. Theoretical derivation and simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme in obtaining the achievable rate performance and BER characteristics.

    The present paper introduces a new approach to the construction of a sequence set with a zero-correlation zone (ZCZ), which is referred to as a ZCZ sequence set. The proposed sequence construction generates a ZCZ sequence set from a ZCZ sequence set. The proposed method can generate an almost optimal ZCZ sequence set, the member size of which approaches the theoretical bound, when an almost optimal ZCZ sequence is used for the sequence construction. The proposed sequence set consists of NO subsets, where a ZCZ sequence set Z(LO, NO, ZO is used in sequence construction. The correlation function of the sequences of a pair of different subsets, referred to as the inter-subset correlation function, has a ZCZ with a width that is about times that of the correlation function of sequences of the same subset (intra-subset correlation function) for integers Λ ≥ 1, T, and m ≥ 0. Wide inter-subset zero-correlation enables improved performance during application of the proposed sequence set.

    It is well known that satellite communications systems are effective and essential communication infrastructure for disaster relief. NICT sent researchers to Tsunami stricken area in March right after the Great East Japan Earthquake and provided broadband satellite communications link to support rescue activities. Through this experience, we learned many kinds of requirements of communications for such purposes. In this paper, we list up the requirements and report what kind of satellite communications technologies are needed, and research and development issues.

  • Novel Polarization-Tracking-Free Mobile Satellite Communication Systems and On-Ground Polarization-Forming Technique

    This paper proposes an On-Ground Polarization-Forming (GPF) technique to realize a novel polarization-tracking-free satellite communication system whose communication satellite uses linear polarizations. In this system, mobile terminals use circular polarization to realize polarization-tracking-free and simplified terminal configuration. To output circular polarization from the satellite's horizontal and vertical polarization antennas, those output signals transmitted from the satellite are controlled by the base station using the GPF technique. We fabricate a GPF transmitter to evaluate its polarization forming performance. Measured results show that the proposed technique achieves very high cross-polarization discrimination, more than 27 dB.

    This paper aims at channel modeling and bit error rate (BER) performance improvement with diversity reception for in-body to on-body ultra wideband (UWB) communication for capsule endoscope application. The channel characteristics are firstly extracted from 3.4 to 4.8 GHz by using finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulations incorporated with an anatomical human body model, and then a two-path impulse response channel model is proposed. Based on the two-path channel model, a spatial diversity reception technique is applied to improve the communication performance. Since the received signal power at each receiver location follows a lognormal distribution after summing the two path components, we investigate two methods to approximate the lognormal sum distribution in the combined diversity channel. As a result, the method matching a short Gauss-Hermite approximation of the moment generating function (MGF) of the lognormal sum with that of a lognormal distribution exhibits high accuracy and flexibility. With the derived probability density function (PDF) for the combined diversity signals, the average BER performances for impulse-radio (IR) UWB with non-coherent detection are investigated to clarify the diversity effect by both theoretical analysis and computer simulation. The results realize an improvement around 10 dB on Eb/No at BER of 10-3 for two-branch diversity reception.

    Polarization-maintaining photonic crystal fiber couplers (PM-PCFCs) were fabricated using a CO2 laser irradiation technique. We could control the states of air holes in the tapered region of couplers by adjusting the laser power density in the fusion and the elongation processes. It was demonstrated that the air hole remaining PM-PCFC exhibited polarization-splitting characteristics and that the air hole collapsed PM-PCFC had polarization insensitive coupling characteristics.

  • Small Multi-Band Antenna with Tuning Function for Body-Centric Wireless Communications

    The research on body-centric wireless communications (BCWCs) is becoming very hot because of numerous applications, especially the application of E-health systems. Therefore, a small multi-band and low-profile planar inverted-F antenna (PIFA) with tuning function is presented for BCWCs in this paper. In order to achieve multi-band operation, there are two branches in the antenna: the longer branch low frequency band (950–956 MHz), and the shorter branch with a varactor diode embedded for high frequency bands. By supplying different DC voltages, the capacitance of the varactor diode varies, so the resonant frequency can be tuned without changing the dimension of the antenna. While the bias is set at 6 V and 14 V, WiMAX and ISM bands can be covered, respectively. From the radiation patterns, at 950 MHz, the proposed antenna is suitable for on-body communications, and in WiMAX and ISM bands, they are suitable for both on-body and off-body communications.

    The present paper has reported a case study of the “Electronic Doctor's Bag” which is a telemedical tool for home-visit medical services using the mobile communications environment in an isolated island and a disaster area hit by the tsunami. Clinical trials performed for 20 patients around a clinic in Miyako Island indicated that the communication functions of the proposed system were highly evaluated by patients as well as medical staffs. However, the system still has room for further improvement in operability, portability and mobile communication environment. The experience at the shelter in Kesennuma City suggested that mobile healthcare tools such as the proposed system will be strongly required when there are no or only paramedical staffs after leaving of emergency medical staffs.

    This paper presents a compact metal plate lens antenna for evaluating a wave absorber placed on ceiling of the ETC gate. The focal distance of the lens was derived to be 129 cm by the geometrical optics procedure. By arranging the lens in front of a horn antenna, the gain and beamwidth characteristics were improved from 18 dBi to 26 dBi and from 22 degrees to 7 degrees, respectively. Then the antenna characteristics were evaluated when the distance between the antenna and the lens was changed in order to miniaturize the lens antenna. As the result, the changes in beamwidth were held to within 1 dB when the lens came close to the horn antenna. Scattering, phase and electric field intensity of electromagnetic wave were evaluated to clarify the foundation of the given characteristics. It was found that the field intensity for the miniaturized lens antenna is stronger than that for GO designed one though the phase uniformity is worse. The distance between the horn antenna and lens can be reduced to 80 cm. The absorption characteristics for the arranged absorbers which have different absorptions were measured, and it was shown that the proposed method was suitable for specifying the deteriorated absorber in the ETC system.

  • An Efficient Synchronization Scheme for Cooperative WBAN in Wireless Medical Telemetry Systems

    In this letter, a timing synchronization scheme is proposed for cooperative WBAN which can be utilized in wireless medical telemetry systems. The approach efficiently exploits the cyclic structure of a presented preamble in order to effectively separate the superposition of cooperative signals. Then, each timing-offset and each channel parameter are estimated in the separated signal. The proposed scheme effectively recovers the original data based on the timing-offset estimates and the channel estimates. The simulation results reveal the excellent performance of the suggested method in terms of MSE and PER.

    WiMAX wireless communication has been rapidly developed for broadband mobile communication. Mobile WiMAX communication system uses microwave carrier of 2.5 GHz frequency band and modulation is OFDM mainly. By using OFDM technique, WiMAX provide high speed and reliable communication against multi pass interferences due to the presence of obstacles in communication channels. To design excellent high performance mobile communication systems, accurate evaluation of communication system is indispensable. By using parallel FDTD, we studied fundamental characteristics of microwave propagation and scattering in urban area. We also studied wave propagation and scattering by forest and trees using FDTD method. The effects of multiple scattering and attenuation of microwave by forest are severe factors of high speed wireless communications. In this paper, signal propagation and receiving characteristics of OFDM modulated wave are studied by parallel FDTD method. Propagation, reflection, scattering, interference and delay of digital code signals in received code signals are evaluated to show the environmental characteristics. Parallel FDTD methods are applied for signal and noise analysis about several different complex models and inhomogeneous materials such as forests in long distance communication channels.

    Radio frequency identification (RFID) system has gained attention as a new identification source that achieves a ubiquitous environment. Each RFID tag has a unique ID and is attached to an object. A user reads the unique ID of an RFID tag by using RFID readers and obtains the information on the object. One of the important technologies that use the RFID systems is the position estimation of RFID tags. Position estimation means estimating the location of the object with the RFID tag. Acquiring the location information of the RFID tag can be very useful. If a user can know the position of the RFID tag, the position estimation can be applied to a navigation system for walkers. In this paper, we propose a new position estimation method named Swift Communication Range Recognition (S-CRR) as an extended improvement on previous CRR that shortens the estimation delay. In this method, the position of an RFID tag is estimated by selecting the communication area model that corresponds to its boundary angles. We evaluated its performance by experiments and simulations of the RFID system. As the results, we found that S-CRR can estimate the position of an RFID tag comparatively accurately and quickly.
