  • A 4.78 µs Dynamic Compensated Inductive Coupling Transceiver for Ubiquitous and Wearable Body Sensor Network

    A Real-time Capacitor Compensation (RCC) scheme is proposed for low power and continuous communication in the wearable inductive coupling transceiver. Since inductance values of wearable inductor vary dynamically with deterioration of its communication characteristics, the inductance value is monitored and its resonance frequency is adjusted by additive parallel/serial capacitors in real time. RLC Bridge for detection of the inductance variations and the Dual-edge Sampling Comparator for recognition of the variance direction are proposed. It is implemented in a 0.18 µm CMOS technology, and it occupies a 12.7 mm2 chip area. The proposed transceiver consumes only 426.6 µW at 4 Mbps data rate. The compensation time takes 4.78 µs, including 3 µs of detection and 1.78 µs for compensation process in worst case.

    This paper presents a ZCZ code which are combinedly used for spreading sequences and a synchronization symbol in quasi-synchronous CDMA systems using PSK, ASK or BFSK. Furthermore a simple matched filter is presented, which simultaneously calculates correlations with any sequences in the ZCZ code.

    We investigate the secret key agreement from correlated Gaussian sources in which the legitimate parties can use the public communication with limited rate. For the class of protocols with the one-way public communication, we show a closed form expression of the optimal trade-off between the rate of key generation and the rate of the public communication. Our results clarify an essential difference between the key agreement from discrete sources and that from continuous sources.

    Two-dimensional (2D) communication is a novel physical communication form that utilizes the surface as a communication medium to provide both data and power transmission service to the sensor devices placed on the surface's top. In previous works, we developed 2D communication systems that utilize separated channels for data and power transmission. Though this assignment of different channels can achieve strong network performance, the sensor devices must be equipped with two or more interfaces to simultaneously receive the power and data signals, which significantly complicates and enlarges those devices. Moreover, when a channel is used for the power supply, it not only continually monopolizes the wireless frequency resource, it is also likely to cause interference with the other signal source in the case of the input power continually being sent out above a certain level. In this paper, we develop a novel 2D communication sensor system by using a single-carrier frequency for both power and data transmission, equipped with the wireless module for the two together in a compact body. To enable a sensor node that concurrently receives energy and data communication, we propose an enhancement scheme based on the IEEE802.15.4 MAC protocol standard. Through both computer simulation and actual measurement of the output power, we evaluate the performance of power supply and data transmission over the developed 2D communication sensor system.

    This manuscript reported basic examination results of the wireless network communication performance at the coast. We consider that underwater environment condition monitoring is a sort of likely typical application for ubiquitous sensor networks. The result of the experiment shows the performance of the wireless network communication at the coastal area.

  • Exploring Web Partition in DHT-Based Distributed Web Crawling

    The basic requirements of the distributed Web crawling systems are: short download time, low communication overhead and balanced load which largely depends on the systems' Web partition strategies. In this paper, we propose a DHT-based distributed Web crawling system and several DHT-based Web partition methods. First, a new system model based on a DHT method called the Content Addressable Network (CAN) is proposed. Second, based on this model, a network-distance-based Web partition is implemented to reduce the crawler-crawlee network distance in a fully distributed manner. Third, by utilizing the locality on the link space, we propose the concept of link-based Web partition to reduce the communication overhead of the system. This method not only reduces the number of inter-links to be exchanged among the crawlers but also reduces the cost of routing on the DHT overlay. In order to combine the benefits of the above two Web partition methods, we then propose 2 distributed multi-objective Web partition methods. Finally, all the methods we propose in this paper are compared with existing system models in the simulated experiments under different datasets and different system scales. In most cases, the new methods show their superiority.

    In the symbiotic cognitive radio (CR) networks, the CR users (CUs) may assist the primary transmission in a cooperation time, and obtain an incentive time for their own data transmission. In this letter, we study the throughput maximization problem in the symbiotic CR networks. Under the symbiosis and transmit power constraints, we aim to find the optimal cooperation time to assist the primary transmission and power allocations among the CUs. Given the cooperation time, the optimal power allocations can be solved by multi-level water-filling (MWF) with individual volume limits. A theoretical analysis is presented on the cooperation time and a modified bisection algorithm with low complexity is proposed to find the sub-optimal cooperation time. Simulation results show that the spectrum usage efficiency can be significantly improved as the number of CUs increases.

  • Planar Waveguide Arrays for Millimeter Wave Systems Open Access

    Design of high gain and high efficiency antennas is one of the key challenges in antenna engineering and especially in millimeter wave communication systems. Various types of planar waveguide arrays with series-fed traveling wave operation have been developed in Tokyo Tech with the special focus upon efficiency enhancement as well as reduction of fabrication cost. In this review, four kinds of single layer waveguide arrays characterized with the series fed travelling wave operation are surveyed first. To cope with the bandwidth narrowing effects due to long line effects associated with the series fed operation, authors have introduced partially corporate feed embedded in the single layer waveguide. They further extended the study to cover fully corporate feed arrays with multiple layer waveguide as well; a new fabrication technique of diffusion bonding of laminated thin plates has the potential to realize the low cost mass production of multi-layer structures for the millimeter wave application. Secondly, the novel methods for loss evaluation of copper plate substrate are established for the design of post-wall waveguide arrays where dielectric loss and conductor loss is determined in wide range of millimeter wave band, by using the Whispering gallery mode resonator. This enables us to design the planar arrays with the loss taken into account. Finally, the planar arrays are now applied to two kinds of systems in the Tokyo Tech millimeter wave project; the indoor short range file-transfer systems and the outdoor communication systems for the medium range backhaul links. The latter has been field-tested in the model network built in Tokyo Tech Ookayama campus. Early stage progress of the project including unique propagation data is also reported.

    An analytical method to make a trade off between tuning range and differential non-linearity (DNL) for a digitally controlled oscillator (DCO) is proposed. To verify the approach, a 12 bit DCO is designed, implemented in 0.18 µm CMOS technology, and tested. The measured DNL was -0.41 Least Significant Bit (LSB) without degrading other parameters which is the best so far among the reported DCOs.

    The rapid growth of IT technology has enabled ship navigation and automation systems to gain better functionality and safety. However, they generally have their own proprietary structures and networks, which makes interfacing with and remote access to them difficult. In this paper, we propose a total ship service framework that includes a ship area network to integrate separate system networks with heterogeneity and dynamicity, and a ship-shore communication infrastructure to support a remote monitoring and maintenance service using satellite communications. Finally, we present some ship service systems to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed framework.

    Effects of atomic hydrogen annealing (AHA) on the film properties and the electrical characteristics of pentacene organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs) are investigated. The surface energy of SiO2 surface and grain size of pentacene film were decreased with increasing AHA treatment time. For the treatment time of 300 s, pentacene film showed the (00l) and (011') orientation and high carrier mobility in spite of small crystal grain.

    This paper attempts to analyze theoretically the propagation characteristics in the transverse section of upper body to support on-body wireless communications. The analytical estimation assumes that the human body is structured as a lossy-dielectric circular cylinder with infinite length that consists of the 2/3-muscle equivalent uniform tissue. Each scattering electric field formulation inside and outside of the cylinder is derived for scattering characteristics in the propagation environment including the human body when the source current has the vertical direction to the cylinder surface or the horizontal direction to the cylinder axis. In order to confirm the reliability of the formulation, total electric field distributions at 2.45 GHz are compared with the results by the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. In each current direction, general scattering characteristics and the influence on the total propagation are estimated. Furthermore, from scattering and total electric field intensities evaluated with the variations of operating frequency, radius of the human body, and distance between a source and the human body, propagation characteristics are investigated to assist in the design of a device for on-body propagation channel with the upper body.

    For optimization problems with irregular and complex multimodal landscapes, Estimation of Distribution Algorithms (EDAs) suffer from the drawback of premature convergence similar to other evolutionary algorithms. In this paper, we propose an adaptive niching EDA based on Affinity Propagation (AP) clustering analysis. The AP clustering is used to adaptively partition the niches and mine the searching information from the evolution process. The obtained information is successfully utilized to improve the EDA performance by using a balance niching searching strategy. Two different categories of optimization problems are used to evaluate the proposed adaptive niching EDA. The first one is solving three benchmark functional multimodal optimization problems by a continuous EDA based on single Gaussian probabilistic model; the other one is solving a real complicated discrete EDA optimization problem, the HP model protein folding based on k-order Markov probabilistic model. Simulation results show that the proposed adaptive niching EDA is an efficient method.

    In this paper a new electromagnetic (EM) interference analysis is proposed using the total harmonic distortion (THD) measurement of the audio signal by the 900 MHz cordless telephones. The cordless telephone network in 900 MHz was built up to be weak in EM interference. 400 and 800 Hz of the sine-wave signal were used in transmitter (TX) system, and the receiver (RX) system was exposed to the EM interference. The THD value varies as the level of the exposed EM interference changes. The model of the cordless telephone also affects the THD value. By using fluctuation of the THD value depending on the amount of the exposure, the threshold value of the interference electric field strength was derived. Based on the derived threshold value of the electric field strength, validity of the regulation value for low power radio devices by CISPR 22 [CLASS B] and FCC is discussed.

  • A Parallel Transmission Scheme for All-to-All Broadcast in Underwater Sensor Networks

    This paper is concerned with the packet transmission scheduling problem for repeating all-to-all broadcasts in Underwater Sensor Networks (USN) in which there are n nodes in a transmission range. All-to-all communication is one of the most dense communication patterns. It is assumed that each node has the same size packet. Unlike the terrestrial scenarios, the propagation time in underwater communications is not negligible. We define all-to-all broadcast as the one where every node transmits packets to all the other nodes in the network except itself. So, there are in total n(n - 1) packets to be transmitted for an all-to-all broadcast. The optimal transmission scheduling is to schedule in a way that all packets can be transmitted within the minimum time. In this paper, we propose an efficient packet transmission scheduling algorithm for underwater acoustic communications using the property of long propagation delay.

    We propose novel tree construction algorithms for multicast communication in photonic networks. Since multicast communications consume many more link resources than unicast communications, effective algorithms for route selection and wavelength assignment are required. We propose a novel tree construction algorithm, called the Weighted Steiner Tree (WST) algorithm and a variation of the WST algorithm, called the Composite Weighted Steiner Tree (CWST) algorithm. Because these algorithms are based on the Steiner Tree algorithm, link resources among source and destination pairs tend to be commonly used and link utilization ratios are improved. Because of this, these algorithms can accept many more multicast requests than other multicast tree construction algorithms based on the Dijkstra algorithm. However, under certain delay constraints, the blocking characteristics of the proposed Weighted Steiner Tree algorithm deteriorate since some light paths between source and destinations use many hops and cannot satisfy the delay constraint. In order to adapt the approach to the delay-sensitive environments, we have devised the Composite Weighted Steiner Tree algorithm comprising the Weighted Steiner Tree algorithm and the Dijkstra algorithm for use in a delay constrained environment such as an IPTV application. In this paper, we also give the results of simulation experiments which demonstrate the superiority of the proposed Composite Weighted Steiner Tree algorithm compared with the Distributed Minimum Hop Tree (DMHT) algorithm, from the viewpoint of the light-tree request blocking.

    RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology is expected to be used as a localization tool. By the localization of RFID tags, a mobile robot equipped with an RFID reader can recognize the surrounding environment. In this paper, we propose a novel effective scheme called the communication range recognition (CRR) scheme for localizing RFID tags. In this scheme, an RFID reader determines the boundaries of the communication range when it is appropriately positioned by the robot. We evaluate the estimated position accuracy through numerous experiments. We show that the moving distance of the RFID reader in the proposed scheme is lower than that in conventional schemes.

  • A 90-Gb/s Modulator Driver IC Based on Functional Distributed Circuits for Optical Transmission Systems

    A monolithic modulator driver IC based on InP HBTs with a new circuit topology -- called a functional distributed circuit (FDC) -- for over 80-Gb/s optical transmission systems has been developed. The FDC topology includes a wide-band amplifier designed using a distributed circuit, a digital function designed using a lumped circuit, and broadband impedance matching between the lumped circuit and distributed circuit to enable both wider bandwidth and digital functions. The driver IC integrated with a 2:1 multiplexing function produces 2.6-Vp-p (differential output: 5.2 Vp-p) and 2.4- Vp-p (differential output: 4.8 Vp-p) output-voltage swings with less than 450-fs and 530-fs rms jitter at 80 Gb/s and 90 Gb/s, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, this is equivalent to the highest data rate operation yet reported for monolithic modulator drivers. When it was mounted in a module, the driver IC successfully achieved electro-optical modulation using a dual-drive LiNbO3 Mach-Zehnder modulator up to 90 Gb/s. These results indicate that the FDC has the potential to realize high-speed and functional ICs for over-80-Gb/s transmission systems.

  • Highly Reliable Multiple-Valued One-Phase Signalling for an Asynchronous On-Chip Communication Link

    This paper presents highly reliable multiple-valued one-phase signalling for an asynchronous on-chip communication link under process, supply-voltage and temperature variations. New multiple-valued dual-rail encoding, where each code is represented by the minimum set of three values, makes it possible to perform asynchronous communication between modules with just two wires. Since an appropriate current level is individually assigned to the logic value, a sufficient dynamic range between adjacent current signals can be maintained in the proposed multiple-valued current-mode (MVCM) circuit, which improves the robustness against the process variation. Moreover, as the supply-voltage and the temperature variations in smaller dimensions of circuit elements are dominated as the common-mode variation, a local reference voltage signal according to the variations can be adaptively generated to compensate characteristic change of the MVCM-circuit component. As a result, the proposed asynchronous on-chip communication link is correctly operated in the operation range from 1.1 V to 1.4 V of the supply voltage and that from -50 to 75 under the process variation of 3σ. In fact, it is demonstrated by HSPICE simulation in a 0.13-µm CMOS process that the throughput of the proposed circuit is enhanced to 435% in comparison with that of the conventional 4-phase asynchronous communication circuit under a comparable energy dissipation.

  • A Class of Complementary Sequences with Multi-Width Zero Cross-Correlation Zone

    A novel construction of complementary sequences with multi-width zero cross-correlation zone (ZCCZ) is presented based on the interleaving iteration of a basic kernel set. The presented multi-width ZCCZ complementary (MWZC) sequences can be divided into multiple sequence groups, the correlation functions of which possess one-width intragroup ZCCZ and multi-width intergroup ZCCZ. When an arbitrary orthogonal sequence set with set size equal to sequence length is used as a basic kernel set, the constructed MWZC sequence set and the combination sets of specific subsets with each subset including several groups can be optimal with respect to the theoretical bound on set size. In addition, the MWZC sequence set includes complementary sequence sets with one-width or two-width ZCCZ as special subsets, and allows a more flexible choice of sequence parameters.
