We experimentally studied the polarization mode dispersion (PMD) tolerance of an feed-forward equalizer (FFE) electronic dispersion compensation (EDC) IC in the absence of adaptive control, in 43-Gbit/s RZ-DQPSK transmission. Using a 3-tap FFE IC composed of InP HBTs, differential group delay (DGD) tolerance at a 2-dB Q penalty is shown to be extended from 25 ps to up to 29 ps. When a polarization scrambler is used, the tolerance is further extended to 31 ps. This value is close to the tolerance obtained with adaptive control, without a polarization scrambler.

A low-voltage quadrature up-conversion CMOS mixer for 5-GHz wireless communication applications is designed with a TSMC 0.18-µm process. The fold-switching technique is used to implement the low-voltage double balanced quadrature mixer. A miniature lumped-element microwave broadband rat-race hybrid and RLC shift network are used for the local oscillator and the intermediate frequency port design, respectively. The measured results demonstrate that the mixer can reach a high conversion gain, a low noise figure (NF), and a high linearity. The mixer exhibits improvement in noise, conversion gain, and image rejection. The mixer shows a conversion gain of 16 dB, a noise figure of 12.8 dB, an image rejection of 45 dB, while dissipating 15.5 mW for an operating voltage at 1 V.

Effective countermeasures against explosive increase in healthcare expenditures are urgently needed. A paradigm shift in healthcare is called for, and academics and governments worldwide are working hard on the application of information and communication technologies (ICT) as a feasible and effective measure for reducing medical cost. The more prevalent the disease and the easier disease outcome can be improved, the more efficient is medical ICT in reducing healthcare cost. Hypertension and diabetes mellitus are such examples. Chronic heart failure is another disease in which patients may benefit from ICT-based medical practice. It is conceivable that daily monitoring of hemodynamics together with appropriate treatments may obviate the expensive hospitalization. ICT potentially permit continuous monitoring with wearable or implantable medical devices. ICT may also help accelerate the development of new therapeutic devices. Traditionally effectiveness of treatments is sequentially examined by sacrificing a number of animals at a given time point. These inefficient and inaccurate methods can be replaced by applying ICT to the devices used in chronic animal experiments. These devices allow researchers to obtain biosignals and images from live animals without killing them. They include implantable telemetric devices, implantable telestimulation devices, and imaging devices. Implanted rather than wired monitoring and stimulation devices permit experiments to be conducted under even more physiological conditions, i.e., untethered, free-moving states. Wireless communication and ICT are indispensible technologies for the development of such telemetric and telestimulation devices.

The effect of wavefront compensation in beam transmission is estimated for ground to satellite laser communications. A numerical analysis is performed using the combination of the isoplanatic angle, the atmospheric coherence length and the point-ahead angle to find the aperture size of the beam transmission with which the wavefront compensation effect appears most strongly.

This paper studies the feasibility of 700 MHz band inter-vehicle communication system when it is put into practical use in urban area. To verify the system, a large-scale demonstration experiment in a quasi-street test course is performed. In the experiment, a number of vehicles which are equipped with communication devices conforming to ITS FORUM RC-006 specifications are employed. A simulation method that is applicable to large-scale communication model is also designed, and the validity of the method is verified by utilizing the results derived from the experiment. Based on this model, the quality of the inter-vehicle communication system in urban area communication environment is estimated. The results show that the system's performance satisfies the requirements of representative prevention scenes of traffic accident, and the feasibility of the 700 MHz band inter-vehicle communication system specified in RC-006 is verified in the practical use in urban communication environment.
Ultra wideband (UWB) on-body communication is attracting much attention in biomedical applications. In this paper, the performance of UWB on-body communication is investigated based on a statistically extracted on-body channel model, which provides detailed characteristics of the multi-path-affected channel with an emphasis on various body postures or body movement. The possible data rate, the possible communication distance, as well as the bit error rate (BER) performance are clarified via computer simulation. It is found that the conventional correlation receiver is incompetent in the multi-path-affected on-body channel, while the RAKE receiver outperforms the conventional correlation receiver at a cost of structure complexity. Different RAKE receiver structures are compared to show the improvement of the BER performance.

We propose a novel topology control scheme that reduces the transmission power of nodes and increases the network connectivity, based on the fact that Cooperative Communication (CC) technology can bridge disconnected networks. Simulation results demonstrate that our scheme greatly increases the connectivity for a given transmission power, compared to other topology control schemes.
Superconducting Quantum Interference Devices (SQUIDs) are known to be the most sensitive magnetometers, used in a wide range of applications like biomagnetism, geomagnetism, Non Destructive Evaluation (NDE), metrology or fundamental science. For all these applications, the SQUID sensor is used in analog mode and associated with a carefully designed room-temperature control and/or feedback electronics. Nevertheless, the use of SQUID sensors in digital mode is of high interest for several applications due to their quantum accuracy associated to high linearity, and their potentially very high slew rate and dynamic range. The concept and performances of a low-Tc digital magnetometer based on Single-Flux-Quantum (SFQ) logic, fabricated at the FLUXONICS Foundry located at IPHT Jena, Germany, are given after a presentation of the context of development of superconductive digital magnetometers. The sensitivity, limited to one magnetic single flux quantum, and a dynamic range of 76 dB, that corresponds to an upper limit of the magnetic field amplitude higher than 5 µT, have been measured along with overnight stability. The dynamic range of about 2800 magnetic flux quanta Φ0 has been experimentally observed with an external magnetic field. First signatures of magnetic fields have been observed simultaneously with the ones of analog SQUIDs in the low noise environment of the Laboratoire Souterrain a Bas Bruit (LSBB) located in Rustrel, Provence, France.
This paper proposes an efficient multiuser relay scheme in OFDMA systems. In the proposed scheme, multiple terminals transmit their data packets simultaneously in the same subband and multiple relay stations retransmit their received signals in different subbands after subband conversion. A base station (BS) extracts individual packets from received signals in the different subbands. In advance of data transmission, the BS selects appropriate terminals so that the BS can extract individual data packets successfully. Numerical results show that the proposed relay scheme achieves higher system throughput than the conventional relay scheme when scheduling is applied to a larger number of terminals than the number of relay stations.
This paper investigates the autonomous decision-making process of the selection of alternative countermeasures against threats in electronic warfare settings. We introduce a threat model, which represents a specific threat pattern, and a methodology that decides the best countermeasure against real-time threats using the decision theory. To determine the optimal countermeasure, we model the probabilities of the effects of countermeasures, if executed, and combine the probabilities with their utilities. This methodology based upon the inductive threat model calculates the expected utilities of countermeasures which are applicable given a situation, and provide an intelligent command and control agent with the best countermeasure to threats. We present empirical results that demonstrate the agent's capabilities of choosing countermeasures to threats in simulated electronic warfare settings.

This paper proposes a sensing system for a behavior detection system using an ultrasonic oscillosensor and an air pressure sensor. The ultrasonic oscillosensor sensor has a cylindrical tank filled with water. It detects the vibration of the target object from the signal reflected from the water surface. This sensor can detect a biological vibration by setting to the bottom bed frame. The air pressure sensor consists of a polypropylene sheet and an air pressure sensor, and detects the pressure information by setting under the bed's mattress. An increase (decrease) in the load placed on the bed is detected by the increase (decrease) in the pressure of the air held in the tube attached to the sheet. We propose a behavior detection system using both sensors, complementally. The system recognizes three states (nobody in bed, keeping quiet in bed, moving in bed) using both sensors, and we detect the behavior before getting out of bed by recognized these states. Fuzzy logic plays a primary role in the system. As the fundamental experiment, we applied the system to five healthy volunteers, the system successfully recognized three states, and detected the behavior before getting out of bed. As the clinical experiment, we applied the system to four elderly patients with dementia, the system exactly detected the behavior before getting out of the bed with enough time for medical care support.
We have proposed a human-area networking technology that uses the surface of the human body as a data transmission path and uses an AC electric field signal below the resonant frequency of the human body. This technology aims to achieve a "touch and connect" intuitive form of communication by using the electric field signal that propagates along the surface of the human body, while suppressing both the electric field radiating from the human body and mutual interference. To suppress the radiation field, the frequency of the AC signal that excites the transmitter electrode must be lowered, and the sensitivity of the receiver must be raised while reducing transmission power to its minimally required level. We describe how we are developing AC electric field communication technologies to promote the further evolution of a human-area network in support of ubiquitous services, focusing on three main characteristics, enabling-transceiver technique, application-scenario modeling, and communications quality evaluation. Special attention is paid to the relationship between electro-magnetic compatibility evaluation and regulations for extremely low-power radio stations based on Japan's Radio Law.

The modulated scattering antenna array (MSAA) is composed of one normal antenna element and several modulated scattering elements (MSEs). In this paper, a 2-element MSAA is used as the receiving antenna in a 2 2 multiple input multiple output (MIMO) system. MIMO performance of MSAA with various array spacing is measured to investigate the relation between the array spacing and the MIMO performance of the MSAA experimentally in the non-line-of-sight (NLOS) indoor environment. It is found that the error vector magnitude (EVM) and the channel capacity, which reflect MIMO performance, can be affected by the array spacing. The measured results of the MSAA were compared with that of two-dipole antenna array at the same condition.

This study employs a simple measurement methodology that is based on the de-convolution of a square test stimulus to measure the transmission characteristics of the human body channel in an electrostatic-coupling intra body communication system. A battery-powered square waveform generator was developed to mimic the electrostatic-coupling intra body communication system operating in the environment of the ground free. The measurement results are then confirmed using a reliable measuring method (single tone) and spectral analysis. The results demonstrate that the proposed measurement approach is valid for up to 32.5 MHz, providing a data rate of over 16 Mbps.

This letter investigates the space-time block codes from quasi-orthogonal design as a tradeoff between high transmission rate and low decoding complexity. By studying the role orthogonality plays in space-time block codes, upper bound of transmission rate and lower bound of decoding complexity for quasi-orthogonal design are claimed. From this point of view, novel algorithms are developed to construct specific quasi-orthogonal designs achieving these bounds.
A scalable speech codec consisting of a harmonic codec as the core layer and MDCT-based transform codec as the enhancement layer is often required to provide both very low-rate core communication and fine granular scalability. This structure, however, has a serious drawback for practical use because a time delay caused by transform in each layer is accumulated, resulting in a long overall codec delay. In this letter, a new MDCT structure is proposed to reduce the overall codec delay by eliminating the accumulation of time delay by each transform. In the proposed structure, the time delay is first reduced by forcing two transforms to share a common look-ahead. The error components of MDCT caused by the look-ahead sharing are then analyzed and compensated in the decoder, resulting in perfect reconstruction. The proposed structure reduces the codec delay by the frame size, with an equivalent coding efficiency.

We have developed an easy fabrication method of Si field effect transistors (FETs) with poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) gate films for science education. In this process, we can easily fabricate the silicon FETs only by means of metal deposition and thermal diffusion without any lithography processes. The organic isolation films of PMMA can be deposited by casting or painting at room temperature in air. The metal-organic-semiconductor FETs with PMMA exhibited almost the same drain current -- gate voltage characteristics as those of conventional Si metal-oxide-semiconductor FETs, which are suitable for the education material of semiconductor engineering. The organic gate Si FETs can be used not only for education but also as thin film transistors for active matrix displays.

In this Letter, a residual acoustic echo suppression method is proposed to enhance the speech quality of hands-free communication in an automobile environment. The echo signal is normally a human voice with harmonic characteristics in a hands-free communication environment. The proposed algorithm estimates the residual echo signal by emphasizing its harmonic components. The estimated residual echo is used to obtain the signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) information at the acoustic echo canceller output. Then, the SIR based Wiener post-filter is constructed to reduce both the residual echo and noise. The experimental results confirm that the proposed algorithm is superior to the conventional residual echo suppression algorithm in terms of the echo return loss enhancement (ERLE) and the segmental signal-to-noise ratio (SEGSNR).

We propose a novel short-range wireless communications technology that uses quasi-static electric fields; it enables data communication between devices separated by up to 10 cm via dielectric media at a speed of 10 Mbps. It is considered to be a secure wireless technology since communication area is restricted to below about 10 cm. To suppress electromagnetic radiation, we adopted a baseband transmission scheme in which the quasi-static electric field is directly modulated by 10 BASE-T data signals. Since the spectra of the data signals are concentrated to below 20 MHz, the amplitude of the electric field rapidly decreases outside the communication area. This contributes to enhancing security of the communications system. In this paper, we explain a basic principle of the short-range wireless communications technology. Since baseband data signals are carried by the quasi-static electric field, the quality of the communication is easily degraded by the existence of the earth ground. To isolate the communications system from the earth ground, we introduce a novel electro-optic sensor to receive the quasi-static electric field. With the electro-optic sensor, stable data communication is possible at 10 Mbps via dielectric materials, such as a wooden table.
