    This paper presents the electrical contact behaviors of Au-plated material at super low making and breaking velocity conditions by introducing our new designed test rig. The fundamental phenomena in the contact voltage and contact force versus piezoactuator displacement curves were investigated under the load current of 1A and velocity of 50,nm/s. From the repetitive experimental results, we found that the adhesion phenomena during the unloading process are closely correlative with the initial contact stage in the loading process. Furthermore, a mathematical model which is relative to the variation of contact force in loading is built, thus the physical mechanism of adhesion and principal factors of gold-plated materials are discussed. Finally, the physical process of molten bridge under the no mechanical contact situation is also analyzed in detail.

    A new exemplar-based inpainting method which effectively preserves global structures and textures in the restored region driven by feature vectors is presented. Exemplars that belong to the source region are segmented based on their features. To express characteristics of exemplars such as shapes of structures and smoothness of textures, the Harris corner response and the variance of pixel values are employed as a feature vector. Enhancements on restoration plausibility and processing speedup are achieved as shown in the experiments.

    Recently, hue-preserving color image enhancement methods have been proposed by several researchers. However, the theoretical comparison of the performance of their methods has not been conducted yet. In this paper, we propose a hue-preserving saturation maximization method, and show a relationship of the saturation of enhanced colors by related methods. We also demonstrate the correctness of the relationship experimentally.

  • Displacement Mapping with an Augmented Patch Mesh

    Displacement mapping has been widely used for adding geometric surface details to 3D mesh models. However, it requires sufficient tessellation of the mesh if fine details are to be represented. In this paper, we propose a method for applying the displacement mapping even on coarse models by using an augmented patch mesh. The patch mesh is a regularly tessellated flat square mesh, which is mapped onto the target area. Our method applies displacement mapping to the patch mesh for fitting it to the original mesh as well as for adding surface details. We generate a patch map, which stores three-dimensional displacements from the patch mesh to the original mesh. A displacement map is also provided for defining the new surface feature. The target area in the original mesh is then replaced with the patch mesh, and the patch mesh reconstructs the original shape using the patch map and the new surface detail is added using the displacement map. Our results show that our method conveniently adds surface features to various models. The proposed method is particularly useful if the surface features change dynamically since the original mesh is preserved and the separate patch mesh overwrites the target area at runtime.

    A quartz-crystal-microbalance (QCM) and surface-plasmon-resonance (SPR) hybrid sensor was prepared, and the depositions of polymer electrolytes layer-by-layer (LbL) films were observed in situ. The estimated thicknesses obtained from the QCM method were different from those obtained from the SPR method. This was estimated to be caused by film swelling and water contained in the film.

    The fabrication of a grating structure formed by a solid-state electrolyte layer on a dye-TiO$_{2}$ film by the nanoimprinting technique using a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) stamp and its application in photoelectric conversion devices are described. The PDMS grating pattern is imprinted from blu-ray disc recordable. A silver electrode was deposited on the patterned solid-state electrolyte layers. Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) excitation was observed in the fabricated solar cells by irradiation with white light. The photoelectric conversion properties were measured to study the effect of the two types of SPR excitations, i.e., the propagating surface plasmon on the Ag grating surface and the localized surface plasmon from the Au nanoparticles on TiO$_{2}$.

    The success of heuristic search in AI planning largely depends on the design of the heuristic. On the other hand, previous experience contains potential domain information that can assist the planning process. In this context, we have studied dynamic macro-based heuristic planning through action relationship analysis. We present an approach for analyzing the action relationship and design an algorithm that learns macros in solved cases. We then propose a dynamic macro-based heuristic that appropriately reuses the macros rather than immediately assigning them to domains. The above ideas are incorporated into a working planning system called Dynamic Macro-based Fast Forward planner. Finally, we evaluate our method in a series of experiments. Our method effectively optimizes planning since it reduces the result length by an average of 10% relative to the FF, in a time-economic manner. The efficiency is especially improved when invoking an action consumes time.

    RC4 is a widely-used stream cipher, adopted in many standard protocols, such as WEP, WPA and SSL/TLS, as a standard encryption algorithm. Isobe et al. proposed a plaintext recovery attack on RC4 in the broadcast setting, where the same plaintext is encrypted with different secret keys. Their attack is able to recover the first 257bytes by exploiting the biases of the initial bytes of a keystream. In this paper, we propose two types of full plaintext recovery attacks that are able to recover all the bytes, even after the 258th byte, of a plaintext, unlike Isobe et al.'s attack. To achieve this, we combine the use of multiple keystream biases appropriately. The first attack utilizes the initial byte biases and Mantin's long-term bias. This attack can recover the first 1000 terabytes of a plaintext from 234 ciphertexts with a probability of almost one. The second attack is based on two long-term biases. Since this attack does not rely on the biases of the initial bytes of the RC4 keystream, it can recover any byte of a plaintext, even if the initial bytes are disregarded. Given 235 ciphertexts encrypted by different keys, any byte of a target plaintext can be recovered with a probability close to one.

    Resonant scattering of flexural waves in acoustic waveguide is analysed by using the recursive transfer method (RTM). Because flexural waves are governed by a fourth-order differential equation, a localized wave tends to be induced around the scattering region and dampening wave tails from the localized wave may reach the ends of a simulation domain. A notable feature of RTM is its ability to extract the localized wave even if the dampening tail reaches the end of the simulation domain. Using RTM, the enhanced reflection caused by a localized wave is predicted and the shape of the localized wave is explored at its resonance with the incident wave.

    Energy conservation is one of the hot topics within the domain of traffic problems. It is well known that shortening the distance between vehicles reduces the aerodynamic drag of the lagging (or following) vehicle and leads to energy savings, which benefits the drivers. Recently, systems have been developed in which trucks or vehicles travel in a platoon with reduced headway from the preceding vehicle by using automated driving or driver assistance systems. The objective of the present study is to investigate how human factors, such as driving style, a driver's condition, or a driver's personal characteristics, influence the decision of a driver to close the gap with a preceding vehicle and obtain the benefit of aerodynamic drag reduction. We developed a realistic experimental paradigm for investigating the relationship between distance and several factors including the driver's personal characteristics and the size of preceding vehicle. Our experimental setup made use of real vehicles on a test track, as opposed to a vehicle simulator. We examined behavior of subjects that drove the following vehicle as well as subjects that sat in the passenger seat in the following vehicle. The experimental results demonstrate that all subjects attempted to reduce the distance to the preceding vehicle in order to gain the benefit. Based on the experimental and questionnaire results, we conclude that there are relationships between the category of subjects and subject's following distances.

    Computation in the brain is realized in complicated, heterogeneous, and extremely large-scale network of neurons. About a hundred billion neurons communicate with each other by action potentials called “spike firings” that are delivered to thousands of other neurons from each. Repeated integration and networking of these spike trains in the network finally form the substance of our cognition, perception, planning, and motor control. Beyond conventional views of neural network mechanisms, recent rapid advances in both experimental and theoretical neuroscience unveil that the brain is a dynamical system to actively treat environmental information rather passively process it. The brain utilizes internal dynamics to realize our resilient and efficient perception and behavior. In this paper, by considering similarities and differences of the brain and information networks, we discuss a possibility of information networks with brain-like continuing internal dynamics. We expect that the proposed networks efficiently realize context-dependent in-network processing. By introducing recent findings of neuroscience about dynamics of the brain, we argue validity and clues for implementation of the proposal.

  • Hierarchical Architecture for Peer-to-Peer Video on Demand Systems with the Notion of Dynamic Swarms

    This paper proposes a method to reduce the playback suspension in a Video-on-Demand system based on the Peer-to-Peer technology (P2P VoD). Our main contribution is twofold. The first is the proposal of a hierarchical P2P architecture with the notion of dynamic swarms. Swarm is a group of peers to have similar playback position and those swarms are connected with an overlay so that requested pieces are forwarded from a swarm to another swarm in a bucket brigade manner, where the forward of pieces is regulated by the super-peer (SP) of each swarm. The second contribution is the proposal of a match making scheme between requests and uploaders. The simulation result indicates that the proposed scheme reduces the total waiting time of a randomized scheme by 24% and the load of the media server by 76%.

  • A Tenant Network Provisioning Platform with Provisioning Template for Multi-Tenancy Data Centers

    Tenant network provisioning in multi-tenancy data centers is time-consuming and error-prone due to the need to configure network devices with hundreds of parameter values (e.g., VLAN ID, IP address) determined according to complicated operational rules. Past works have aimed to automate such operational rule-based provisioning processes by implementing data center-specific provisioning programs, but a crucial problem is the high cost of adapting the programs to suit multiple data centers. In this paper, we aim to solve this problem by enabling to describe the provisioning processing, which has been hard-coded programs in conventional approaches, in easy-to-edit “provisioning template” files. The key component of the provisioning template is the parameter decision rule, which is a declarative abstract representation of parameter dependency and parameter assignment. We design the provisioning template so that it can handle various configuration items while preserving its editability for tenant provisioning. We design and implement the provisioning platform, and the evaluation based on a production data center shows that the provisioning platform can adopt multiple data centers with a single program, leading to less development cost compared to past approaches (i.e., program development for each data center).

  • A Novel High-Performance Heuristic Algorithm with Application to Physical Design Optimization

    In this paper, a novel high-performance heuristic algorithm, named relay-race algorithm (RRA), which was proposed to approach a global optimal solution by exploring similar local optimal solutions more efficiently within shorter runtime for NP-hard problem is investigated. RRA includes three basic parts: rough search, focusing search and relay. The rough search is designed to get over small hills on the solution space and to approach a local optimal solution as fast as possible. The focusing search is designed to reach the local optimal solution as close as possible. The relay is to escape from the local optimal solution in only one step and to maintain search continuity simultaneously. As one of typical applications, multi-objective placement problem in physical design optimization is solved by the proposed RRA. In experiments, it is confirmed that the computational performance is considerably improved. RRA achieves overall Pareto improvement of two conflicting objectives: power consumption and maximal delay. RRA has its potential applications to improve the existing search methods for more hard problems.

  • Interactive Evolutionary System for Synthesizing Facial Caricature with Non-planar Expression

    A method to synthesize facial caricatures with non-planar expression is proposed. Several methods have been already proposed to synthesize facial caricatures automatically, but they mainly synthesize plane facial caricatures which look somewhat monotonous. In order to generate expressive facial caricature, the image should be expressed in non-planar style, expressing the depth of the face by shading and highlighting. In this paper, a new method to express such non-planar effect in facial caricatures is proposed by blending the grayscale information of the real face image into the plane caricature. Some methods also have been proposed to generate non-planar facial caricature, but the proposed method can adjust the degree of non-planar expression by interactive evolutionary computing, so that the obtained expression is satisfied by the user based on his/her subjective criteria. Since the color of the face looks changed, when the grayscale information of the natural face image is mixed, the color information of the skin area are also set by interactive evolutionary computing. Experimental results show the high performance of the proposed method.

  • Traffic-Aware Network Planning and Green Operation with BS Sleeping and Cell Zooming

    The traffic load of cellular networks varies in both time and spatial domains, causing many base stations (BS) to be under-utilized. Assisted by cell zooming, dynamic BS sleep control is considered as an effective way to improve energy efficiency during low traffic hours. Therefore, how densely the BSs should be deployed with cell zooming and BS sleeping is an important issue. In this paper, we explore the energy-optimal cellular network planning problem with dynamic BS sleeping and cell zooming for the cases in which traffic is uniformly distributed in space but time-varying. To guarantee the quality of multi-class services, an approximation method based on Erlang formula is proposed. Extensive simulations under our predefined scenarios show that about half of energy consumption can be saved through dynamic BS sleeping and power control. Surprisingly, the energy-optimal BS density we obtained is larger than the one without considering BS sleeping. In other words, deploying more BSs may help to save energy if dynamic BS sleeping is executed.

  • Workload-Aware Caching Policy for Information-Centric Networking

    Information-centric networking (ICN) is a promising architecture and has attracted much attention in the area of future Internet architectures. As one of the key technologies in ICN, in-network caching can enhance content retrieval at a global scale without requiring any special infrastructure. In this paper, we propose a workload-aware caching policy, LRU-GT, which allows cache nodes to protect newly cached contents for a period of time (guard time) during which contents are protected from being replaced. LRU-GT can utilize the temporal locality and distinguish contents of different popularity, which are both the characteristics of the workload. Cache replacement is modeled as a semi-Markov process under the Independent Reference Model (IRM) assumption and a theoretical analysis proves that popular contents have longer sojourn time in the cache compared with unpopular ones in LRU-GT and the value of guard time can affect the cache hit ratio. We also propose a dynamic guard time adjustment algorithm to optimize the performance. Simulation results show that LRU-GT can reduce the average hops to get contents and improve cache hit ratio.

  • Radiation Properties of a Linearly Polarized Radial Line Microstrip Antenna Array with U-Slots

    This paper presents the design and radiation properties of a linearly polarized radial line microstrip antenna array (RL-MSAA) with U-slot circular microstrip antennas. A circular microstrip antenna (C-MSA) with U-shaped slot is used as a radiation element of the RL-MSAA. Radiation phase of the U-slot C-MSA is controlled by tuning the radius of the C-MSA and dimensions of the U-slot on the C-MSA; therefore, the desired phase distribution of the RL-MSAA can be realized. In this paper, a linearly polarized RL-MSAA with three concentric rows of C-MSAs at a spacing of 0.65 wavelengths is designed for 12GHz operation. In order to realize uniform phase distribution, the U-slot C-MSAs are arranged for inner two rows and normal C-MSAs are arranged for the termination row. Validity of the linearly polarized RL-MSAA with the U-slot C-MSAs for radiation phase control is demonstrated by simulation and measurement.

  • Influence of Contact Material Vapor on Thermodynamic and Transport Properties of Arc Plasmas Occurring between Ag and Ag/SnO2 contact pairs

    For break arcs occurring between Ag and Ag/SnO$_2$ 12,wt% electrical contact pairs, the electrical conductivity, viscosity and specific heat at constant pressure are calculated as thermodynamic and transport properties. Mixture rates of contact material vapor are 0%, 1%, 10% and 100%. Influence of the contact material on the properties is investigated. Temperature for the calculation ranges from 2000,K to 20000,K. Following results are shown. When the mixture rate is changed, the electrical conductivity varies at lower temperature (< 10000,K), and the viscosity and specific heat vary widely at all temperature range. The electrical conductivity is independent of the mixture rate when the temperature is exceeding 10000,K. The thermodynamic and transport properties are independent of the kind of the contact materials.

    Binaural reproduction is one of the promising approaches to present a highly realistic virtual auditory space to a listener. Generally, binaural signals are reproduced using a set of headphones that leads to a simple implementation of such a system. In contrast, binaural signals can be presented to a listener using a technique called “transaural reproduction” which employs a few loudspeakers with crosstalk cancellation for compensating acoustic transmissions from the loudspeakers to both ears of the listener. The major advantage of transaural reproduction is that a listener is able to experience binaural reproduction without wearing any device. This leads to a more natural listening environment. However, in transaural reproduction, the listener is required to be still within a very narrow sweet spot because the crosstalk canceller is very sensitive to the listener's head position and orientation. To solve this problem, dynamic transaural systems have been developed by utilizing contact type head tracking. This paper introduces the development of a dynamic transaural system with non-contact head tracking which releases the listener from any attachment, thereby preserving the advantage of transaural reproduction. Experimental results revealed that sound images presented in the horizontal and median planes were localized more accurately when the system tracked the listener's head rotation than when the listeners did not rotate their heads or when the system did not track the listener's head rotation. These results demonstrate that the system works effectively and correctly with the listener's head rotation.
