  • A Theoretical Analysis of a Circular Microstrip Antenna in a Parallel-Plate Waveguide

    To better understand antenna properties in a narrow space such as in a densely-packed device, a circular microstrip antenna in a narrow parallel-plate waveguide is theoretically studied. An analytical expression is derived for the input impedance in a parallel-plate waveguide by using the cavity model with surface admittance on the side wall. The surface admittance is defined by the external magnetic field due to the equivalent magnetic current at the aperture and takes into account the contribution of the parallel plates to the antenna. The magnetic field external to the antenna, that is in the parallel-plate region, is determined by using a dyadic Green's function. The input impedance is then calculated by a basic definition based on the conservation of the complex power. An analytical expression which couples the resonant frequency and the surface susceptance is also formulated. Presented expressions are validated by comparison with experimental results.

    In this letter, a novel ultra-wideband circular quasi-fractal monopole antenna with a six-petaled lotus pattern is presented. The CPW-fed technique and quasi-fractal concept are used to achieve ultra-wideband characteristics. The size of the proposed antenna is 4250 mm2 with a lotus diameter of 19.8 mm. The proposed antenna exhibits ultra-wideband characteristics from 2.65 to 12.72 GHz, which corresponds to a fractional bandwidth of 131%. The measured radiation pattern of the proposed antenna is nearly omnidirectional.

    Wireless capsule endoscopy (WCE) is now one of most important applications in implant body area networks (BANs). WCE requires high throughput performance due to its real-time data transmission, whereas the communication performance depends much on the transmit power, which is strictly regulated in order to satisfy a safety guideline in terms of specific absorption rate (SAR). Spatial diversity reception is well known to improve the wireless performance without any temporal and spectral resource expansion. Additionally, applying spatial diversity reception to WCE systems can be expected to not only improve the wireless communication performance but also to reduce SAR. Therefore, this paper investigates the impact of spatial diversity reception on SAR levels for the 400 MHz medical implant communication service (MICS) band. To begin with, based on finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations for implant BAN propagation with a numerical human body model, we first calculate the BER performance and derive the required transmit power to secure a permissible BER. Then, this paper calculates the local peak SAR under the required transmit power when the implant transmitter moves through the digestive organs. Finally, our simulation results demonstrate that applying spatial diversity reception can significantly reduce SAR in implant BANs.

Experimental results revealed that image quality factors are influenced by environment illuminations in the following order: minimum luminance, maximum luminance and gamma.

    This paper introduces new FPGA design of user-monitoring system for power management of PC display. From the camera readings the system detects whether the user looks at the screen or not and produces signals to control the display backlight. The system provides over 88% eye detection accuracy at 8f/s image processing rate. We describe new eye-tracking algorithm and hardware and present the results of its experimental evaluation in prototype display power management system.

    Predicting network throughput is important for network-aware applications. Network throughput depends on a number of factors, and many throughput prediction methods have been proposed. However, many of these methods are suffering from the fact that a distribution of traffic fluctuation is unclear and the scale and the bandwidth of networks are rapidly increasing. Furthermore, virtual machines are used as platforms in many network research and services fields, and they can affect network measurement. A prediction method that uses pairs of differently sized connections has been proposed. This method, which we call connection pair, features a small probe transfer using the TCP that can be used to predict the throughput of a large data transfer. We focus on measurements, analyses, and modeling for precise prediction results. We first clarified that the actual throughput for the connection pair is non-linearly and monotonically changed with noise. Second, we built a previously proposed predictor using the same training data sets as for our proposed method, and it was unsuitable for considering the above characteristics. We propose a throughput prediction method based on the connection pair that uses ν-support vector regression and the polynomial kernel to deal with prediction models represented as a non-linear and continuous monotonic function. The prediction results of our method compared to those of the previous predictor are more accurate. Moreover, under an unstable network state, the drop in accuracy is also smaller than that of the previous predictor.

    The copper nitride surface characteristics according to atmospheric pressure plasma (APP) and excimer ultraviolet (EUV) treatment were compared using XPS and AFM. As the result of XPS analysis result, in C1s, the organic material removal effect was greater for EUV treatment than for APP, and the oxygen content was found to be low. In Cu (933 eV) area, the shoulder peak of Cu compound was detected, and the reduction was greater for EUV processing than for APP. In the AFM phase image which could be analyzed using the superficial viscoelasticity, the same trend was observed. On the copper nitride surface, the weak boundary O layer is formed according to the clean processing, and such phenomenon was interpreted as a factor for lowering the affinity with polymer.

    Shisen-Sho is a tile-based one-player game. The instance is a set of 136 tiles embedded on 817 rectangular grids. Two tiles can be removed if they are labeled by the same number and if they are adjacent or can be connected with at most three orthogonal line segments. Here, line segments must not cross tiles. The aim of the game is to remove all of the 136 tiles. In this paper, we consider the generalized version of Shisen-Sho, which uses an arbitrary number of tiles embedded on rectangular grids. It is shown that deciding whether the player can remove all of the tiles is NP-complete.

  • Study of Dispersion of Lightning Whistlers Observed by Akebono Satellite in the Earth's Plasmasphere

    When the Akebono (EXOS-D) satellite passed through the plasmasphere, a series of lightning whistlers was observed by its analog wideband receiver (WBA). Recently, we developed an intelligent algorithm to detect lightning whistlers from WBA data. In this study, we analyzed two typical events representing the clear dispersion characteristics of lightning whistlers along the trajectory of Akebono. The event on March 20, 1991 was observed at latitudes ranging from 47.83 (47,83N) to -11.09 (11.09S) and altitudes between ∼2232 and ∼7537 km. The other event on July 12, 1989 was observed at latitudes from 34.94 (34.94N) and -41.89 (41.89S) and altitudes ∼1420–∼7911 km. These events show systematic trends; hence, we can easily determine whether the wave packets of lightning whistlers originated from lightning strikes in the northern or the southern hemispheres. Finally, we approximated the path lengths of these lightning whistlers from the source to the observation points along the Akebono trajectory. In the calculations, we assumed the dipole model as a geomagnetic field and two types of simple electron density profiles in which the electron density is inversely proportional to the cube of the geocentric distance. By scrutinizing the dipole model we propose some models of dispersion characteristic that proportional to the electron density. It was demonstrated that the dispersion D theoretically agrees with observed dispersion trend. While our current estimation is simple, it shows that the difference between our estimation and observation data is mainly due to the electron density profile. Furthermore, the dispersion analysis of lightning whistlers is a useful technique for reconstructing the electron density profile in the Earth's plasmasphere.

  • Perceived Depth Change Produced by Visual Acuity Difference between the Eyes

    Three methods of presenting a three-dimensional (3-D) image – a real object, a protruding stereoscopic display, and the depth-fused 3-D (DFD) display – have different tendencies for the change in perceived depth produced when the visual acuity of the dominant eye is decreased by an occlusion foil. These different tendencies are estimated from the slope and correlation coefficient of the plot of perceived depth difference versus stimuli depth difference. This estimation was derived using the same experimental system setup composed of two displays and a half mirror for all three 3-D display methods. The perceived depth difference was measured for four subjects by calipers using two fingers. The slope and correlation coefficient had almost the same tendencies as follows. The real object had the smallest decrease among the three 3-D display methods when the dominant eye's visual acuity was decreased and the protruding stereoscopic display had the largest decrease. The DFD display method had an intermediate decrease between those of the real object and protruding stereoscopic display. When the dominant eye's visual acuity was high enough, the differences among the three 3-D display methods were small. When its visual acuity was decreased, the differences increased among the three 3-D display methods and became statistically significant.

  • Selection of Characteristic Frames in Video for Efficient Action Recognition

    Vision based human action recognition has been an active research field in recent years. Exemplar matching is an important and popular methodology in this field, however, most previous works perform exemplar matching on the whole input video clip for recognition. Such a strategy is computationally expensive and limits its practical usage. In this paper, we present a martingale framework for selection of characteristic frames from an input video clip without requiring any prior knowledge. Action recognition is operated on these selected characteristic frames. Experiments on 10 studied actions from WEIZMANN dataset demonstrate a significant improvement in computational efficiency (54% reduction) while achieving the same recognition precision.

  • Performance Evaluation on RSSI-Based Localization for Capsule Endoscopy Systems with 400 MHz MICS Band Signals

    One of promising application offered by implant body area networks (BANs) is a capsule endoscope localization system. To begin with, this paper performs finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations on implant BAN propagation with a numerical human model, and investigates the propagation characteristics of implant BAN signals at 400 MHz medical implant communication service (MICS) band. Then, the paper presents a capsule endoscope localization system which utilizes only received signal strength indicator (RSSI) and two estimation methods, such as a maximum likelihood (ML) estimation method and a least squares (LS) method. Furthermore, we evaluate the two localization methods by two computer simulation scenarios. Our computer simulation results demonstrate that the ML localization can improve the location estimation accuracy as compared with the LS localization, that is, our performance comparison reveals that a careful consideration the propagation characteristics of implant BANs signals is efficient in terms of estimation performance improvement in capsule endoscope localization.

    This paper describes very compact MIC magic-Ts and their integration with planar array antennas to realize the advanced antenna modules. The orthogonal transmission modes are effectively used to arrange the preferable port layout of magic-Ts. This flexible port layout of magic-Ts is a practical feature for integration with planar array antennas. The integration of magic-Ts and planar array antennas can easily create advanced functions. A couple of array antennas based on the integration advantages are introduced to materialize this technical concept. This integration approach is of big worth to originate various kinds of advanced antennas and the wireless modules in the ubiquitous society.

    The research on body-centric wireless communications (BCWCs) is becoming very hot because of numerous applications, especially the application of E-health systems. Therefore, a small multi-band and low-profile planar inverted-F antenna (PIFA) with tuning function is presented for BCWCs in this paper. In order to achieve multi-band operation, there are two branches in the antenna: the longer branch low frequency band (950–956 MHz), and the shorter branch with a varactor diode embedded for high frequency bands. By supplying different DC voltages, the capacitance of the varactor diode varies, so the resonant frequency can be tuned without changing the dimension of the antenna. While the bias is set at 6 V and 14 V, WiMAX and ISM bands can be covered, respectively. From the radiation patterns, at 950 MHz, the proposed antenna is suitable for on-body communications, and in WiMAX and ISM bands, they are suitable for both on-body and off-body communications.

  • Miniaturization of Parallel-Plate Lens Antenna for Evaluation of Wave Absorber Placed on Ceiling of ETC Gate Open Access

    This paper presents a compact metal plate lens antenna for evaluating a wave absorber placed on ceiling of the ETC gate. The focal distance of the lens was derived to be 129 cm by the geometrical optics procedure. By arranging the lens in front of a horn antenna, the gain and beamwidth characteristics were improved from 18 dBi to 26 dBi and from 22 degrees to 7 degrees, respectively. Then the antenna characteristics were evaluated when the distance between the antenna and the lens was changed in order to miniaturize the lens antenna. As the result, the changes in beamwidth were held to within 1 dB when the lens came close to the horn antenna. Scattering, phase and electric field intensity of electromagnetic wave were evaluated to clarify the foundation of the given characteristics. It was found that the field intensity for the miniaturized lens antenna is stronger than that for GO designed one though the phase uniformity is worse. The distance between the horn antenna and lens can be reduced to 80 cm. The absorption characteristics for the arranged absorbers which have different absorptions were measured, and it was shown that the proposed method was suitable for specifying the deteriorated absorber in the ETC system.

  • Floorplanning for High Utilization of Heterogeneous FPGAs

    Heterogeneous resources such as configurable logic blocks (CLBs), multiplier blocks (MULs) and RAM blocks (RAMs) where millions of logic gates are included have been added to field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). The fixed-outline floorplanning used by the existing methods always has a big penalty item in the objective function to ensure all the modules are placed in the specified chip region, which maybe greatly degrade the wirelength. This paper presents a three-phase floorplanning method for heterogeneous FPGAs. First, a non-slicing free-outline floorplanning method is used to optimize the wirelength, however, in this phase, the satisfaction of resource requirements from functional modules might fail. Second, a min-cost-max-flow algorithm is used to tune the assignment of CLBs to functional modules, and assign contiguous regions to each module so that all the functional modules satisfy CLB requirements. Finally, the MULs and RAMs are allocated to modules by a network flow model. CLBs hold the maximum quantity among all the resources. Therefore, making a high utilization of them means an enhancement of the FPGA densities. The proposed method can improve the utilization of CLBs, hence, much larger circuits could be mapped to the same FPGA chip. The results show that about 7–85% wirelength reduction is obtained, and CLB utilization is improved by about 25%.

  • Effect of Lubricant on Lifetime of Au-Plated Slip-Ring and Ag-Pd-Cu Brush System for Small Electric Power

    The authors have been investigating degradation process of Au plated slip ring and Ag-Pd-Cu brush system. In almost all cases the lifetime of the sliding system ends, when Au plating layer is worn out, the ring surface is oxidized to be black in color and contact resistance becomes very high. Further, the lifetime is very short without lubricant. So, the lubricant is very effective to make the lifetime longer. However, even with lubricant the lifetime is varied from about 1000 hours to almost 7000 hours in the past experiments. It is an important issue how the lubricant works on the lifetime of the system. In this paper the effect of lubricant on the degradation process of contact resistance is focused on. In the past tests the lubricant is supplied only once before the test. In this test the lubricant is regularly supplied almost every 900 operation hours. Consequently, the operation more than 8000 hours is realized, which is the longest among tests so far. In addition the contact voltage drop increase gradually until 2600 hours and after that it stays almost constant around 70 mV. According to the Element Analysis after the test the Ni base plating layer is totally exposed in many tracks. It means that the Au plating layer is gradually worn out probably at the stage of increasing voltage drop. In the previous tests the lifetime ended even when the Ni plating layer remained. So, the reason of long operation in this test is guessed to be that the lubricant not only decreases wear of ring and brush, but also suppresses oxidation of the Ni layer.

  • Deformation of Crystal Morphology in Tin Plated Contact Layer Caused by Loading

    Tin (Sn) contacts are widely applied to connector contacts. Surfaces of plated tin layer are covered with an oxide film that results in high contact resistance. However, it is possible to obtain low contact resistance by using high contact load. Current downsizing trends often make it difficult to obtain high contact loads. Therefore, it is important to conduct basic studies of the contacts resistance characteristics under low contact load conditions. In this study, relationships between contact resistance and the changes of contact traces were examined. When a platinum (Pt) hemisphere contacted to tin plated flat coupon, it was found that the hemisphere surface sank into the softer tin plated flat surface during loading resulting in a piling up tin crystal grains along the periphery of the contact trace. During this process, sudden decrease in contact resistance was observed. To clarify the phenomenon, morphology changes of contact traces were observed by AFM, SEM and EBSD. FEM analysis was also used to analyze the mechanical stress distribution in the tin plated layer. Due to the peculiar distribution of stress, the crystal grains are separated and push out the contact area. This phenomenon is very different from commonly observed decrease in contact resistance due to elastic and plastic deformation inducing mechanical fracture of the surface oxide film.

  • Generating Realistic Node Mobility and Placement for Wireless Multi-Hop Network Simulation Open Access

    There exists a considerable number of node placement models and algorithms for simulation of wireless multihop networks. However, the topologies created with the existing algorithms do not have properties of real networks. We have developed NPART (Node Placement Algorithm for Realistic Topologies) in order to resolve this fundamental issue in simulation methodology. We compare topologies generated by NPART with open wireless multihop network in Berlin. The NPART generated topologies have almost identical node degree distribution, number of cut-edges and vertices as the real network. Unlike them, topologies generated with the common node placement models have their own characteristics which are considerably different both from NPART and from reality. NPART algorithm has been developed into a tool. We propose a method and present a tool for integration of NPART with various realistic node mobility algorithms and tools, such as Citymob [1] and MOVE [2]. This integrated tool allows easy and time-efficient generation of highly complex, realistic simulation scenarios. We use the tool to evaluate effects of integration between existing open community wireless multi-hop networks and vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs). The evaluation shows that despite partial coverage and peculiar topological properties of open networks, they offer high levels of performance and network availability to the mobile end users, virtually identical to performance and availability of planned, dedicatedly deployed networks. Our results indicate that the integration of these networks may bring considerable benefits to all parties involved.

  • Design of a Readout Circuit for Improving the SNR of Satellite Infrared Time Delay and Integration Arrays

    This paper presents a novel CMOS readout circuit for satellite infrared time delay and integration (TDI) arrays. An integrate-while-read method is adopted, and a dead-pixel-elimination circuit for solving a critical problem of the TDI scheme is integrated within a chip. In addition, an adaptive charge capacity control method is proposed to improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for low-temperature targets. The readout circuit was fabricated with a 0.35-µm CMOS process for a 5004 mid-wavelength infrared (MWIR) HgCdTe detector array. Using the circuit, a 90% background-limited infrared photodetection (BLIP) is satisfied over a wide input range (∼200–330 K), and the SNR is improved by 11 dB for the target temperature of 200 K.
