In this paper, we consider precoder design for wireless data aggregation in sensor networks. The precoder optimization problem can be formulated as minimization of mean squared error under transmit power and block diagonal constraints. We include statistical correlation of data into the optimization problem, which is appeared in typical applications but is ignored in conventional designing methods. We propose precoder optimization algorithms based on projected gradient descent with projection onto the constraint sets. The proposed method can achieve better performance than the conventional methods that do not incorporate data correlation, especially when data are highly correlated. We also extend the proposed approach to the context of over-the-air computation.

In this study, a Coanda-drone with length, width, and height of 121.6, 121.6, and 191[mm] was designed, and its total mass was 1166.7[g]. Using four propulsion devices, it could produce a maximum of 5428[g] thrust. Its structure is very different from conventional drones because in this study it combines the design of the jet engine of a jet fixed-wing drone with the fuselage structure layout of a rotary-wing drone. The advantage of jet drone's high propulsion is kept so that it can output greater thrust under the same variation of PWM waveform output. In this study, the propulsion device performs high-speed jetting, and the airflow around the propulsion device will also be jetted downward along the direction of the airflow.

Images captured in low-light environments have low visibility and high noise, which will seriously affect subsequent visual tasks such as target detection and face recognition. Therefore, low-light image enhancement is of great significance in obtaining high-quality images and is a challenging problem in computer vision tasks. A low-light enhancement model, LLFormer, based on the Vision Transformer, uses axis-based multi-head self-attention and a cross-layer attention fusion mechanism to reduce the complexity and achieve feature extraction. This algorithm can enhance images well. However, the calculation of the attention mechanism is complex and the number of parameters is large, which limits the application of the model in practice. In response to this problem, a lightweight module, PoolFormer, is used to replace the attention module with spatial pooling, which can increase the parallelism of the network and greatly reduce the number of model parameters. To suppress image noise and improve visual effects, a new loss function is constructed for model optimization. The experiment results show that the proposed method not only reduces the number of parameters by 49%, but also performs better in terms of image detail restoration and noise suppression compared with the baseline model. On the LOL dataset, the PSNR and SSIM were 24.098dB and 0.8575 respectively. On the MIT-Adobe FiveK dataset, the PSNR and SSIM were 27.060dB and 0.9490. The evaluation results on the two datasets are better than the current mainstream low-light enhancement algorithms.

The increasing demand for high-performance computing in recent years has led to active research on massively parallel systems. The interconnection network in a massively parallel system interconnects hundreds of thousands of processing elements so that they can process large tasks while communicating among others. By regarding the processing elements as nodes and the links between processing elements as edges, respectively, we can discuss various problems of interconnection networks in the framework of the graph theory. Many topologies have been proposed for interconnection networks of massively parallel systems. The hypercube is a very popular topology and it has many variants. The cross-cube is such a topology, which can be obtained by adding one extra edge to each node of the hypercube. The cross-cube reduces the diameter of the hypercube, and allows cycles of odd lengths. Therefore, we focus on the cross-cube and propose an algorithm that constructs disjoint paths from a node to a set of nodes. We give a proof of correctness of the algorithm. Also, we show that the time complexity and the maximum path length of the algorithm are O(n3 log n) and 2n - 3, respectively. Moreover, we estimate that the average execution time of the algorithm is O(n2) based on a computer experiment.

This paper proposes a novel application of coded apertures (CAs) for visual information hiding. CA is one of the representative computational photography techniques, in which a patterned mask is attached to a camera as an alternative to a conventional circular aperture. With image processing in the post-processing phase, various functions such as omnifocal image capturing and depth estimation can be performed. In general, a watermark embedded as high-frequency components is difficult to extract if captured outside the focal length, and defocus blur occurs. Installation of a CA into the camera is a simple solution to mitigate the difficulty, and several attempts are conducted to make a better design for stable extraction. On the contrary, our motivation is to design a specific CA as well as an information hiding scheme; the secret information can only be decoded if an image with hidden information is captured with the key aperture at a certain distance outside the focus range. The proposed technique designs the key aperture patterns and information hiding scheme through evolutionary multi-objective optimization so as to minimize the decryption error of a hidden image when using the key aperture while minimizing the accuracy when using other apertures. During the optimization process, solution candidates, i.e., key aperture patterns and information hiding schemes, are evaluated on actual devices to account for disturbances that cannot be considered in optical simulations. Experimental results have shown that decoding can be performed with the designed key aperture and similar ones, that decrypted image quality deteriorates as the similarity between the key and the aperture used for decryption decreases, and that the proposed information hiding technique works on actual devices.

A novel charge pump, Capacitance Varying Charge Pump (CVCP) is proposed. This charge pump is composed of variable capacitors and rectifiers, and the charge transfer is attained by changing the capacitance values in a manner similar to peristaltic pumps. The analysis of multi-stage CVCP reveals that the output voltage is exponentially dependent on the stage number. Thus, compared with the Dickson charge pump, this charge pump has an advantage in generating high voltages with small stages. As a practical example of CVCP, we present an implementation realized by a MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) technology. Here, the variable capacitor is enabled by a comb-capacitor attached to a high-quality factor resonator. As the rectifier, a PN-junction diode formed in the MEMS layer is used. Simulations including the mechanical elements are carried out for this MEMS version of CVCP. The simulation results on the output voltage and load characteristics are shown to coincide well with the theoretical estimations. The MEMS CVCP is suited for MEMS devices and vibration energy harvesters.

Mobile edge computing (MEC) is a key technology for providing services that require low latency by migrating cloud functions to the network edge. The potential low quality of the wireless channel should be noted when mobile users with limited computing resources offload tasks to an MEC server. To improve the transmission reliability, it is necessary to perform resource allocation in an MEC server, taking into account the current channel quality and the resource contention. There are several works that take a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) approach to address such resource allocation. However, these approaches consider a fixed number of users offloading their tasks, and do not assume a situation where the number of users varies due to user mobility. This paper proposes Deep reinforcement learning model for MEC Resource Allocation with Dummy (DMRA-D), an online learning model that addresses the resource allocation in an MEC server under the situation where the number of users varies. By adopting dummy state/action, DMRA-D keeps the state/action representation. Therefore, DMRA-D can continue to learn one model regardless of variation in the number of users during the operation. Numerical results show that DMRA-D improves the success rate of task submission while continuing learning under the situation where the number of users varies.

In recent years, with the wide spread of the Internet of Things (IoT) devices, security issues for hardware devices have been increasing, where detecting their anomalous behaviors becomes quite important. One of the effective methods for detecting anomalous behaviors of IoT devices is to utilize consumed energy and operation duration time extracted from their power waveforms. However, the existing methods do not consider the shape of time-series data and cannot distinguish between power waveforms with similar consumed energy and duration time but different shapes. In this paper, we propose a method for detecting anomalous behaviors based on the shape of time-series data by incorporating a shape-based distance (SBD) measure. The proposed method first obtains the entire power waveform of the target IoT device and extracts several application power waveforms. After that, we give the invariances to them, and we can effectively obtain the SBD between every two application power waveforms. Based on the SBD values, the local outlier factor (LOF) method can finally distinguish between normal application behaviors and anomalous application behaviors. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method successfully detects anomalous application behaviors, while the existing state-of-the-art method fails to detect them.

A city-level digital twin is a critical enabling technology to construct a smart city that helps improve citizens' living conditions and quality of life. Currently, research and development regarding the digital replica city are pursued worldwide. However, many research projects only focus on creating the 3D city model. A mechanism to involve key players, such as data providers, service providers, and application developers, is essential for constructing the digital replica city and producing various city applications. Based on this motivation, the authors of this paper are pursuing a research project, namely Decentralized Digital Twin EcoSystem (D2EcoSys), to create an ecosystem to advance (and self-grow) the digital replica city regarding time and space directions, city services, and values. This paper introduces an overview of the D2EcoSys project: vision, problem statement, and approach. In addition, the paper discusses the recent research results regarding networking technologies and demonstrates an early testbed built in the Kashiwa-no-ha smart city.

We evaluated the transmission performance, including received power and transmission throughput characteristics, in 4×4 single-user multiple-input multiple-output (SU-MIMO) transmission for synchronous time division duplex (TDD) and downlink data channels in comparison with single-input single-output (SISO) transmission in an environment where a local 5G wireless base station was installed on the roof of a research building at our university. Accordingly, for the received power characteristics, the difference between the simulation value, which was based on the ray tracing method, and the experimental value at 32 points in the area was within a maximum difference of approximately 10 dB, and sufficient compliance was obtained. Regarding the transmission throughput versus received power characteristics, after showing a simulation method for evaluating throughput characteristics in MIMO, we compared the results with experimental results. The cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the transmission throughput shows that, at a CDF of 50%, in SISO transmission, the simulated value is approximately 115Mbps, and the experimental value is 105Mbps, within a difference of approximately 10Mbps. By contrast, in MIMO transmission, the simulation value is 380Mbps, and the experimental value is approximately 420Mbps, which is a difference of approximately 40Mbps. It was shown that the received power and transmission throughput characteristics can be predicted with sufficient accuracy by obtaining the delay profile and the system model at each reception point using the both ray tracing and MIMO simulation methods in actual environments.

Information-Centric Networking (ICN) originally innovated for efficient data distribution, is currently discussed to be applied to edge computing environment. In this paper, we focus on a more flexible context, in-network computing, which is enabled by ICN architecture. In ICN-based in-network computing, a function chaining (routing) method for chaining multiple functions located at different routers widely distributed in the network is required. Our proposal is a twofold approach, On-demand Routing for Responsive Route (OR3) and Route Records (RR). OR3 efficiently chains data and multiple functions compared with an existing routing method. RR reactively stores routing information to reduce communication/computing overhead. In this paper, we conducted a mathematical analytics in order to verify the correctness of the proposed routing algorithm. Moreover, we investigate applicabilities of OR3/RR to an edge computing context in the future Beyond 5G/6G era, in which rich computing resources are provided by mobile nodes thanks to the cutting-edge mobile device technologies. In the mobile environments, the optimum from viewpoint of “routing” is largely different from the stable wired environment. We address this challenging issue and newly propose protocol enhancements for OR3 by considering node mobility. Evaluation results reveal that mobility-enhanced OR3 can discover stable paths for function chaining to enable more reliable ICN-based in-network computing under the highly-dynamic network environment.

Many nodes in Internet of Things (IoT) rely on batteries for power. Additionally, the demand for executing compute-intensive and latency-sensitive tasks is increasing for IoT nodes. In some practical scenarios, the computation tasks of WDs have the non-separable characteristic, that is, binary offloading strategies should be used. In this paper, we focus on the design of an efficient binary offloading algorithm that minimizes system energy consumption (EC) for TDMA-based wireless-powered multi-access edge computing networks, where WDs either compute tasks locally or offload them to hybrid access points (H-APs). We formulate the EC minimization problem which is a non-convex problem and decompose it into a master problem optimizing binary offloading decision and a subproblem optimizing WPT duration and task offloading transmission durations. For the master problem, a DRL based method is applied to obtain the near-optimal offloading decision. For the subproblem, we firstly consider the scenario where the nodes do not have completion time constraints and obtain the optimal analytical solution. Then we consider the scenario with the constraints. By jointly using the Golden Section Method and bisection method, the optimal solution can be obtained due to the convexity of the constraint function. Simulation results show that the proposed offloading algorithm based on DRL can achieve the near-minimal EC.

Measurements of contact discharge current waveforms from an ESD generator with a test voltage of 4kV are conducted with the IEC specified arrangement of a 2m long return current cable in different three calibration environments that all comply with the IEC calibration standard to identify the occurrence source of damped oscillations (ringing), which has remained unclear since contact discharge testing was first adopted in 1989 IEC publication 801-2. Their frequency spectra are analyzed comparing with the spectrum calculated from the ideal contact discharge current waveform without ringing (IEC specified waveform) offered in IEC 61000-4-2 and the spectra derived from a simplified equivalent circuit based on the IEC standard in combination with the measured input impedances of one-ended grounding return current cable with the same arrangement in the same calibration environment as those for the current measurements. The results show that the measured contact discharge waveforms have ringing around the IEC specified waveform after the falling edge of the peak, causing their spectra from 20MHz to 200MHz, but the spectra from 40MHz to 200MHz significantly differ depending on the calibration environments even for the same cable arrangement, which do not almost affect the spectra from 20MHz to 40MHz and over 200MHz. In the calibration environment under the cable arrangement close to the reference ground, the spectral shapes of the measured contact discharge currents and their frequencies of the multiple peaks and dips roughly correspond to the spectral distributions calculated from the simplified equivalent circuit using the measured cable input impedances. These findings reveal that the root cause of ringing is mainly due to the resonances of the return current cable, and calibration environment under the cable arrangement away from the reference ground tends to mitigate the cable resonances.

This letter presents a dual-band load-modulated sequential amplifier (LMSA). The proposed amplifier changed the attenuator terminated at the isolation port of the four-port combiner of the traditional sequential power amplifier (SPA) architecture into a reactance modulation network (RMN) for load modulation. The impedance can be maintained pure resistance by designing RMN, thus realizing high efficiency and a good portion of the output power in the multiple bands. Compared to the dual-band Doherty power amplifier with a complex dual-band load modulation network (LMN), the proposed LMSA has advantages as maintaining high output power back-off (OBO) efficiency, wide bandwidth and simple construction. A 10-watt dual-band LMSA is simulated and measured in 1.7-1.9GHz and 2.4-2.6GHz with saturated efficiencies 61.2-69.9% and 54.4-70.8%, respectively. The corresponding 9dB OBO efficiency is 46.5-57.1% and 46.4-54.4%, respectively.

We compare the demodulation performance of an analog OTDM demultiplexing scheme and digitized OTDM demultiplexing with an ultrahigh-speed digital signal processor in a single-channel OTDM coherent Nyquist pulse transmission. We evaluated the demodulation performance for 40, 80, and 160Gbaud OTDM signals with a baseline rate of 10Gbaud. As a result, we clarified that the analog scheme performs significantly better since the bandwidth for handling the demultiplexed signal is as narrow as 10GHz regardless of the symbol rate. This enables us to use a low-speed A/D converter (ADC) with a large effective number of bits (ENOB). On the other hand, in the digital scheme, the higher the symbol rate becomes, the more bandwidth the receiver requires. Therefore, it is necessary to use an ultrahigh-speed ADC with a low ENOB for a 160Gbaud signal. We measured the ENOB of the ultrahigh-speed ADC used in the digital scheme and showed that the measured ENOB was approximately 1.5 bits lower than that of the low-speed ADC used in the analog scheme. This 1.5-bit decrease causes a large degradation in the demodulation performance obtained with the digital demultiplexing scheme.

When mission-critical applications are provided over a network, high availability is required in addition to a low delay. This paper proposes a multi-homing network design model, named MHND, that achieves low delay, high availability, and the order guarantee of events. MHND maintains the event occurrence order with a multi-homing configuration using conservative synchronization. We formulate MHND as an integer linear programming problem to minimize the delay. We prove that the distributed server allocation problem with MHND is NP-complete. Numerical results indicate that, as a multi-homing number, which is the number of servers to which each user belongs, increases, the availability increases while increasing the delay. Noteworthy, two or more multi-homing can achieve approximately an order of magnitude higher availability compared to that of conventional single-homing at the expense of a delay increase up to two times. By using MHND, flexible network design is achieved based on the acceptable delay in service and the required availability.

In this study, an overloaded large-scale distributed antenna network is considered, for which the number of active users is larger than that of antennas distributed in a base station coverage area (called a cell). To avoid overload, users in each cell are divided into multiple user groups, and, to reduce the computational complexity required for multi-user multiple-input and multiple-output (MU-MIMO), users in each user group are grouped into multiple user clusters so that cluster-wise distributed MU-MIMO can be performed in parallel in each user group. However, as the network size increases, conventional computational methods may not be able to solve combinatorial optimization problems, such as user scheduling and user clustering, which are required for performing cluster-wise distributed MU-MIMO in a finite amount of time. In this study, we apply quantum computing to solve the combinatorial optimization problems of user scheduling and clustering for an overloaded distributed antenna network and propose a quantum computing-based user scheduling and clustering method. The results of computer simulations indicate that as the technology of quantum computers and their related algorithms evolves in the future, the proposed method can realize large-scale dense wireless systems and realize real-time optimization with a short optimization execution cycle.

We evaluated the energy efficiency per 1-bit transmission of an optical light source on InP substrate to achieve optical interconnection. A semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) assisted extended reach EADFB laser (AXEL) was utilized as the optical light source to enhance the energy efficiency compared to the conventional electro-absorption modulator integrated with a DFB laser (EML). The AXEL has frequency bandwidth extendibility for operation of over 100Gbit/s, which is difficult when using a vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) without an equalizer. By designing the AXEL for low power consumption, we were able to achieve 64-Gbit/s, 1.0pJ/bit and 128-Gbit/s, 1.5pJ/bit operation at 50°C with the transmitter dispersion and eye closure quaternary of 1.1dB.

An interconnection network is an inevitable component for constructing parallel computers. It connects computation nodes so that the nodes can communicate with each other. As a parallel computation essentially requires inter-node communication according to a parallel algorithm, the interconnection network plays an important role in terms of communication performance. This paper focuses on the collective communication that is frequently performed in parallel computation and this paper addresses the Cup-Stacking method that is proposed in our preceding work. The key issues of the method are splitting a large packet into slices, re-shaping the slice, and stacking the slices, in a genetic algorithm (GA) manner. This paper discusses extending the Cup-Stacking method by introducing additional items (genes) and proposes the extended Cup-Stacking method. Furthermore, this paper places comprehensive discussions on the drawbacks and further optimization of the method. Evaluation results reveal the effectiveness of the extended method, where the proposed method achieves at most seven percent improvement in duration time over the former Cup-Stacking method.

Modern distributed storage requires microsecond-scale tail latency, but the current coordinator-based quorum coordination causes a burdensome latency overhead. This paper presents Archon, a new quorum coordination architecture that supports low tail latency for microsecond-scale replicated storage. The key idea of Archon is to perform the quorum coordination in the network switch by leveraging the flexibility and capability of emerging programmable switch ASICs. Our in-network quorum coordination is based on the observation that the modern programmable switch provides nanosecond-scale processing delay and high flexibility simultaneously. To realize the idea, we design a custom switch data plane. We implement a Archon prototype on an Intel Tofino switch and conduct a series of testbed experiments. Our experimental results show that Archon can provide lower tail latency than the coordinator-based solution.
