  • Improvements in the Design of Matrix Distributed Amplifiers

    A simple method for the gain improvement of matrix distributed amplifiers is presented. The method is based on modifying the central transmission line of the matrix amplifier without any changes in the input and output transmission lines. In the new method the termination impedances in the central transmission line are modified and the transmission line is replaced by an impedance matching circuitry. It has been shown that the new method can significantly improve the gain while preserving the input and output return losses of the amplifier.

    This letter presents two high-performance level-converting flip-flops (LCFF) for multi-VDD systems, indirect precharging flip-flop (IPFF) and multi-supply complementary pass-transistor flip-flop (MCPFF). Employing a simple precharging scheme, IPFF provides high operating speed. MCPFF, on the other hand, provides low power operations by implementing the edge-triggering function with complementary pass transistors. Performance comparison indicates that IPFF operates at the highest speed and MCPFF consumes the lowest power among the seven LCFFs under evaluation.

  • Fast Image Identification Methods for JPEG Images with Different Compression Ratios

    Two schemes for fast identification of JPEG coded images are proposed in this paper. The aim is to identify the JPEG images that are generated from the same original image and have equivalent or different compression ratios. Fast identification can be achieved since the schemes work on the quantized Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) domain. It is not required to inverse the quantization and the DCT. Moreover, only a few coefficients are commonly required for identification. The first approach can avoid identification leakage or false negative (FN), and probably result in a few false positives (FP). The second approach can avoid both FN and FP, with a slightly higher processing time. By combining the two schemes, a faster and a more perfect identification can be achieved, in which FN and FP can be avoided.

  • Joint Transmit Rate, Power and Antenna Allocation for MIMO Systems with Multimedia Traffic

    This paper proposes an adaptive transmission scheme for MIMO systems to provide different bit error rates and transmission rates for multimedia traffic. The adaptive transmission scheme allocates antennas, rate and power jointly according to the feedback information to satisfy the diverse QoS requirements of the multimedia traffic. Furthermore, an efficient search algorithm with low complexity is proposed for practical implementation. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme improves the spectral efficiency while guaranteeing the QoS requirements of multimedia traffic. Moreover, the proposed search algorithm achieves close optimal performance with great complexity reduction.

  • Realtime Hand Posture Estimation with Self-Organizing Map for Stable Robot Control

    The hand posture estimation system by searching a similar image from a vast database, such as our previous research, may cause the increase of processing time, and prevent realtime controlling of a robot. In this study, the authors proposed a new estimation method of human hand posture by rearranging a large-scale database with the Self-Organizing Map including self-reproduction and self-annihilation, which enables two-step searches of similar image with short period of processing time, within small errors, and without deviation of search time. The experimental results showed that our system exhibited good performance with high accuracy within processing time above 50 fps for each image input with a 2.8 GHz CPU PC.

  • All-Digital Clock Deskew Buffer with Variable Duty Cycles

    An all-digital clock deskew buffer with variable duty cycles is presented. The proposed circuit aligns the input and output clocks with two cycles. A pulsewidth detector using the sequential time-to-digital conversion is employed to detect the duty cycle. The output clock with adjustable duty cycles can be generated. The proposed circuit has been fabricated in a 0.35 µm CMOS technology. The measured duty cycle of the output clock can be adjusted from 30% to 70% in steps of 10%. The operation frequency range is from 400 MHz to 600 MHz.

    This paper presents a performance and thresholds for Irregular Tree-LDPC codes. We obtain optimal irregular degree distributions and threshold by the density evolution technique. It is presented that Irregular Tree-LDPC code has performance gain at low SNR.

    Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems applying macroscopic selection diversity (MSD) are analyzed in composite fading channels through derived expressions of capacity outage probability. The MSD system uses a maximum capacity MIMO base station (BS) selection algorithm, where the results show a significant improvement in outage capacity.

    The present research examines the relationship between texture processing and object processing in human vision. Recent computational studies have suggested a difference between the stages of processing. Texture processing can be performed by using statistical parameterization of the response of primary spatial filters. Object processing requires more complex and elaborate computation at a higher stage than texture processing. Our psychophysical experiments are conducted to clarify the relationship of the stages of texture processing and object processing, by focusing on same-object effect which facilitates and speeds attention shifts within the same object and also costs and delays attention shifts if the attention focus moves from one object to another. Texture is composed of lines parallel to, perpendicular to or inside of elongated rectangles used as objects. The same-object effect is measured with reaction time in a cued detection task. Vertical rectangles are used in xperiment 1 and horizontal ones are used in Experiment 2. Experiment 1 shows that the texture lines interrupt the same-object effect and that the interruption is nearly equal if texture lines are added both to the background and the inside of the objects. Experiment 2 yields the result same as Experiment 1. The interruption of the same-object effect by adding texture lines suggests that texture processing affects object processing.

  • A Method Using an Averaging Technique for the Analysis and Evaluation of Real Quasi-Resonant Converters

    A method using an averaging technique for the analysis and evaluation of real quasi-resonant converters (QRC's) is proposed in this paper. To reduce the great difference between the real characteristics and those of ideal circuits, a modeling technique is developed by considering the effect of parasitic power losses. Then, using the averaging approach reasonably simplifies the process of solving equations to obtain the steady-state solutions of state variables. Also, an updating algorithm is constructed to take all the power losses such as core losses, which are often absent in the conventional analysis, into account to improve the accuracy of the steady-state solutions. By these efforts, the evaluation of characteristics for QRC's is realized.

    In this paper, ultra-wideband (UWB) multiple access systems are introduced by using direct-sequence (DS) and hybrid direct-sequence time-hopping (DS/TH) code division multiple access (CDMA) that use arbitrary chip-duty of the spreading sequences. The bit error probabilities are presented. First of all, the variances of the multiple access interference are developed by investigating the collision properties of the signals. Afterward, various approximations are applied. The standard Gaussian approximation (SGA) for the DS system is shown to become extremely optimistic as the chip-duty becomes low. Though the hybrid system performs better, the SGA still remains optimistic. To obtain accurate results, Holtzman's simplified improved Gaussian approximation (SIGA) and Morrow and Lehnert's improved Gaussian approximation (IGA) are used. A shortcoming of the SIGA is rediscovered that renders it unusable for low-duty DS systems, especially, at high signal-to-noise ratio. However, for the hybrid system, the SIGA works as an excellent tool. The IGA is used to get accurate results for the low-duty DS systems. It is shown that lowering of chip-duty by keeping chip rate and chip length unchanged improves performance for asynchronous DS and both asynchronous and synchronous hybrid systems. However, under the same processing gain, a high-duty system performs better than a low-duty system. Performance of synchronous DS system remains independent of chip-duty.

    This paper presents a hybrid decimal division algorithm to improve division speed. The proposed hybrid algorithm employs either non-restoring or restoring algorithm on each digit to reduce iterative computations. The selection of the algorithm is based on the relative remainder values with respect to the half of its divisor. The proposed algorithm requires maximum 7n+4 add/subtract operations for an n-digit quotient, whereas other restoring or non-restoring schemes comprise more than 10n+1 operations.

  • Collusion-Attack Free ID-Based Non-interactive Key Sharing

    A new simply implemented collusion-attack free identity-based non-interactive key sharing scheme (ID-NIKS) has been proposed. A common-key can be shared by executing only once a modular exponentiation which is equivalent to RSA deciphering, and the security depends on the difficulty of factoring and the discrete logarithm problem. Each user's secret information can be generated by solving two simple discrete logarithm problems and synthsizing their solutions by linear combination. The detail comparison with the Maurer-Yacobi's scheme including its modified versions shows that the computational complexity to generate each user's secret information is much smaller and the freedom to select system parameters is much greater than that of the Maurer-Yacobi's scheme. Then our proposed scheme can be implemented very easily and hence it is suitable for practical use.

  • Recognition of Plural Grouping Patterns in Trademarks for CBIR According to the Gestalt Psychology

    According to the Gestalt principals, this paper presents a recognition method of grouping areas in trademark images modeling features for measuring the attraction degree between couples of image components. This investigation would be used for content-based image retrieval from the view of mirroring human perception for images. Depending on variability in human perception for trademark images, the proposed method finds grouping areas by calculating Mahalanobis distance with the features to every combination of two components in images. The features are extracted from every combination of two components in images, and the features represent proximity, shape similarity, and closure between two components. In addition, changing combination of the features, plural grouping patterns are output. Besides, this paper shows the efficiency and limits of the proposed method from experimental results. In the experiments, 104 participants have perceived grouping patterns to 74 trademark images and the human perceptions have been compared with outputs by the proposed method for the 74 images.

    In this paper, we propose an interactive instruction system named IMPRESSION, which allows performance of interactive presentations using multimedia educational materials in class. In recent years, although many practices of educational methodology with information technology and presentation tools using multimedia resources as educational materials have come into common use, instructors can only present such materials in a slide-sheet form through the use of such presentation tools in class. Therefore, instructors can neither do formative evaluations nor can they present suitable materials according to students' reactions in class. Our proposed methodology employs a scenario-based approach in a double loop instructional design process to overcome such problems. Instructors design an instructional plan as a scenario, and subsequently implement and modify the plan through formative evaluation during the class. They then conduct a summative evaluation based on planned and implemented instructions for redesign. To realize our methodology, in this paper we propose and design an instruction system that provides functions to select and present multimedia materials interactively provided on the Internet during the class; we then record these instructions. After implementing it, we confirmed that we can conduct the class flexibly based on our methodology through its practical use in an actual classroom environment.

  • An Efficient Rate-Distortion Optimization Scheme for JPEG2000

    This paper describes an efficient PCRD (Post-Compression Rate-Distortion) scheme for rate control of JPEG2000. The proposed method determines the rate constant in consideration of the decreasing characteristic of RD-slopes and conducts rate allocation about only coding passes excluded from the previous rate allocation. As a result, it can considerably reduce the number of operations and encoding time with nearly the same PSNR performance as the conventional rate control scheme of JPEG2000.

    A triple density Error Diffusion for medical monochrome LCDs is proposed to improve their gray-scale precisions. In addition, a measurement technique of image qualities based on E-MSE (Eye model-based Mean Square Error) is proposed. Several conventional techniques for medical LCDs, such as Sub-Pixel Modulation and Error Diffusion, are evaluated based on E-MSE and the validity of the proposed technique is ensured objectively.

    The objective of this paper is to propose the Pulse Position Modulation (PPM) system which embeds the synchronizing signal in the information frame. In the proposed system, the frame for transmitting information is also the frame for acquiring frame timing. The data transmission rate of the proposed system is independent of the length of the synchronization signal because the proposed system does not require the synchronization frame. The data transmission rate and the synchronization performance for the proposed system are better than those of the conventional system.

    Real-time object detection or recognition technology becomes more important for various intelligent vision systems. Processing models for object detection or recognition from natural images should tolerate pattern deformations and pattern position shifts. The hierarchical convolutional neural networks are considered as a promising model for robust object detection/recognition. This model requires huge computational power for a large number of multiply-and-accumulation operations. In order to apply this model to robot vision or various intelligent real-time vision systems, its LSI implementation is essential. This paper proposes a new algorithm for reducing multiply-and-accumulation operation by sorting neuron outputs by magnitude. We also propose an LSI architecture based on this algorithm. As a proof of concept for our LSI architecture, we have designed, fabricated and tested two test LSIs: a sorting LSI and an image-filtering LSI. The sorting LSI is designed based on the content addressable memory (CAM) circuit technology. The image-filtering LSI is designed for parallel processing by analog circuit array based on the merged/mixed analog-digital approach. We have verified the validity of our LSI architecture by measuring the LSIs.

  • Polyphase Downsampling Based Multiple Description Coding Applied to H.264 Video Coding

    This paper presents a video coding method that improves error resilient functionality of H.264 with good coding efficiency. The method is based on PD (polyphase downsampling) multiple description coding. The only changes to H.264 are inserting PD before the DCT process and having new data partitioning NAL units. A coded slice is sent on 3 data partitioning NAL units. A header NAL unit contains motion vectors and block modes. Each of the other two NAL units contains a description generated by PD multiple description coding. The experimental results on all 9 of the test sequences of JVT SVC show that the proposed method gives 0.5 to 5 dB enhancement over the existing H.264 FMO checker board mode with motion vector based error-concealment.
