  • Fully Digital Preambleless 40 Mbps QPSK Receiver for Burst Transmission

    We present a case of design and implementation of a high-speed burst QPSK (Quaternary Phase Shift Keying) receiver. Since the PSK modulation carries its information through the phase, the baseband digital receiver can recover transmitted symbol from the received phase. The implemented receiver estimates symbol time and frequency offset using sampled data over 32 symbols without transmitted symbol information, and embedded RAM is used for received phase delay over estimation time. The receiver is implemented using about 92,000 gates of Samsung KG75 SOG library which uses 0.65 µm CMOS technology. The fabricated chip test result shows that the receiver operates at 40 MHz clock rate on 5.6 V, which is equivalent to the 40 Mbps data rate.

    An architectural design of a media processor core optimized for MPEG4/H26x video codec targeted for use in mobile multimedia terminals is presented. The architecture consists of a maximum 6.4 GOPS SIMD (Single Instruction Multiple Data) processor, RISC-processor, VLC-processor, and intelligent DMA controller. The unique SIMD processor completes 2-D DCT processing in 132 clock cycles, or block matching (16 by 16 pixels) in 24 clock-cycles. VLC-processor allows the completion of 8 by 8 block run-level coding in average 10 clock cycles in the case of low bit-rates. The functions of transpose-registers in the SIMD processor, data sub-sampling technique in the DMA, or data-sliding technique between PEs (Processor Elements) in the SIMD processor eliminate a large amount of cycle loss for data handling, and extract the highest level of performance. Through the use of the above architecture and the lower power approach, CIF 30 frames/s MPEG4 Simple Profile video codec @ 100 MHz can be achieved. Estimated dissipation is as low as 280 mW. 300 kgates and 16 kBytes four port SRAM are contained on a 12 mm2 area by using 0.18 µm process technology. The combination of the RISC-processor and SIMD-processor can also operate MPEG4 core profile (shape coding) that requires flexibility and performance.

Achieving both high performance and low power at the same time imposes a lot of challenges on processor design, and therefore gives us a lot of opportunities for devising new technologies. The paper also tries to provide some insights into the technology direction in future.

    We propose a vector-pipeline processor VP-DSP for low-rate videophones which can encode and decode 10 frames/sec. of QCIF through a 29.2 kbps low-rate line. We have already fabricated a VP-DSP LSI by a 0.35 µm CMOS process. The area of the VP-DSP core is 4.26 mm2. It works properly at 25 MHz/1.6 V with a power consumption of 49 mW. Its peak performance is up to 400 MOPS, 8.2 GOPS/W.

    Generally, a siren of ambulance is used to let drivers know that an ambulance is approaching. Although the siren system is effective to alert the drivers and pedestrians, the sound of siren is noisy in a cabin of ambulance. In this paper, an active noise control (ANC) system to control the sound of siren using headset is proposed. The proposed ANC system selectively controls only the sound of siren, and other sound such as speech is not affected at all. The achieved attenuation level by the proposed ANC system is more than 20 dB.

    This paper proposes two novel Multi-bit Delta-Sigma Modulator (Δ Σ M) architectures based on a Dual-Quantization architecture. By using multi-bit quantization with single-bit feedback, Both eliminate the need for a multi-bit digital-to-analog converter (DAC) in the feedback loop. The first is a Digital quantization-Error Canceling Multi-bit (DECM)-Δ Σ M architecture that is able to achieve high resolution at a low oversampling ratio (OSR) because, by adjusting the coefficients of both analog and digital circuits, it is able to cancel completely the quantization error injected into the single-bit quantizer. Simulation results show that a signal-to-quantization-noise ratio of 90 dB is obtained with 3rd order 5-bit quantization DECM-Δ Σ M at an OSR of 32. The second architecture, an analog-to-digital mixed (ADM)-Δ Σ M architecture, uses digital integrators in place of the analog integrator circuits used in the Δ Σ M. This architecture reduces both die area and power dissipation. We estimate that a (2+2)-th order ADM-Δ Σ M with two analog-integrators and two digital-integrators will reduce the area of a 4-th order Δ Σ M by 15%.

    A new adaptive multichannel filtering approach is introduced and analyzed in this paper. The technique is simpler and more appropriate than traditional approaches that have been addressed by means of groupwise vector ordering information. These filters are a two-stage filters based on rational functions (RF) using fuzzy transformations of the Euclidean and angular distances among the different vectors to adapt to local data in the color image. The output is the result of vector rational operation taking into account three fuzzy sub-function outputs. Simulation studies indicate that the filters are computationally attractive and have excellent performance such as edge and details preservation and accurate chromaticity estimation.

    This paper deals with the problem of autoregressive (AR) spectral estimation from a finite set of noisy observations without a priori knowledge of additive noise power. A joint technique is proposed based on the high-order and true-order AR model fitting to the observed noisy process. The first approach utilizes the uncompensated lattice filter algorithm to estimate the parameters of the over-fitted AR model and is one-pass. The latter uses the noise compensated low-order Yule-Walker (LOYW) equations to estimate the true-order AR model parameters and is iterative. The desired AR parameters, equivalently the roots, are extracted from the over-fitted model roots using a root matching technique that utilizes the results obtained from the second approach. This method is highly accurate and is particularly suitable for cases where the system of unknown equations are strongly nonlinear at low SNR and uniqueness of solution from the LOYW equations cannot be guaranteed. In addition, fuzzy logic is adopted for calculating the step size adaptively with the cost function to reduce the computational time of the iterative total search technique. Several numerical examples are presented to evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme in this paper.

    In this paper, we propose a lower bound for the minimum distance of [n,k] linear codes which are specified by generator matrices whose rows are k vectors of a given sequence of n linearly independent vectors over a finite field. The Feng-Rao bound and the order bound give the lower bounds for the minimum distance of the dual codes of the codes considered in this paper. We show that the proposed bound gives the true minimum distance for Reed-Solomon and Reed-Muller codes and exceeds the Goppa bound for some L-type algebraic geometry codes.

    A low-voltage 6-GHz-band monolithic LC-tank VCO has been fabricated using 0.2-µm CMOS/SIMOX process technology. The VCO features a tuning-range switching technique to achieve a wide tuning range. The output frequency range is between 5.71 and 6.21 GHz owing to the tuning-range switch. With the tuning-range switch on or off, the phase noise is about -100 dBc/Hz at 1-MHz offset and about -120 dBc/Hz at 10-MHz offset frequency at the supply voltage of 2 V.

    A 3 to 5-GHz Si-bipolar quadrature modulator and demodulator are described. Both feature a wideband frequency-doubling 90-degree phase shifter that has a mechanism for self-correction of phase errors caused by an original 90-degree phase-shift network at the half frequency of the carrier. Therefore, the phase shifter produces accurate quadrature carrier signals with doubled frequency. The quadrature modulator and demodulator in 30-GHz Si bipolar technology dissipate 80 mA at a 3-V supply. Image rejection of the modulator is more than 40 dB between 3.2 to 5.2 GHz. The phase and amplitude errors of the demodulator are less than 1.5 degrees and less than 0.15 dB, respectively, between 3.5 to 5.2 GHz. Therefore, both are suitable for either direct conversion or image-rejection transceivers for 5-GHz applications.

    This paper proposes a new hybrid active noise control (ANC) system without the estimation of the secondary path filter in advance. The algorithm of the feedforward part of the proposed method is based on the simultaneous equations method and the feedback part employs the filtered-X LMS algorithm. The estimation of the secondary path filter is obtained in the operation of the feedforward part and it is used in the feedback part. When the secondary path changes in the operation of the system, the proposed system can follow to this change. In the simulation example which treats the colored measurement noise, the fine noise reduction performance is obtained.

    This paper proposes a new adaptation-mode control (AMC) for a robust adaptive microphone array with an adaptive blocking matrix (RAMA-ABM). The proposed AMC is based on cross correlations of two microphone signals and uses a state machine for controlling the adaptation to avoid target-signal cancellation. Evaluation with sound data obtained in different acoustic environments demonstrates that the noise reduction by the proposed AMC is 3 dB better than that by the AMC based on the SNR estimate. Subjective listening tests show that the quality of the output signal by the proposed AMC is comparable to or even better than those by the conventional AMCs.

    It is one of the difficulties in enterprise modeling that we must deal with many fragmented pieces of knowledge provided by various domain-experts, which are usually based on mutually different viewpoints of them. This paper presents a formal approach to integrate those pieces into enterprise-wide model units using Rough Set Theory (RST). We focus on business processes in order to recognize and identify the constituents or units of enterprise models, which would compose the model expressing the various aspects of the enterprise. We defined five model unit types of "resource," "organization," "task," "function," and "behavior. " The first three types represent the static aspect of the enterprise, whereas the last two types represent the dynamic aspect of it. Those units are initially elicited from each domain-expert as his/her own individual model units, then they are integrated into enterprise-wide units using RST. Our approach is methodology-free, and any methodologies can include it in their early stage to identify what composes the enterprise.

    To enhance throughput and reuse bandwidth, clustering techniques can effectively manage nodes in multi-hop wireless networks. However, in such networks, hidden terminal interference degrades the system performance and increases the average packet delay time. Therefore, this work presents novel two-level cluster-based code assignment techniques to resolve the hidden terminal problems. At the low level, five basic and an optimized intra-cluster code assignment schemes are developed to calculate the number of codes used in each cluster. At the high level, two inter-cluster code assignment schemes (coarse-grained and fine-grained controls) are proposed to obtain the minimal number of code sets. The merits of our schemes include low execution time, low probability of code re-assignment, and low overhead. Furthermore, the proposed schemes allow us to regionally update orthogonal codes when the topology varies. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed schemes outperform conventional techniques. Among the five basic intra-cluster code assignment schemes, the ordering criteria of increasing number of one-hop neighbors is the best in terms of the number of orthogonal codes to avoid hidden terminal interference. The optimized intra-cluster code assignment scheme generally obtains fewer orthogonal codes than other schemes. For inter-cluster code assignment schemes, the coarse-grained control has a lower code allocation time. However, the fine-grained control requires fewer orthogonal codes.

    For evaluating the output response fluctuation of the actual environmental acoustic system excited by arbitrary random inputs, it is important to predict a whole probability distribution form closely connected with many noise evaluation indexes Lx, Leq and so on. In this paper, a new type evaluation method is proposed by introducing lower and higher order type functional models matched to the prediction of the response probability distribution form especially from a problem-oriented viewpoint. Because of the non-negative property of the sound intensity variable, the response probability density function can be reasonably expressed in advance theoretically by a statistical Laguerre expansion series form. The system characteristic between input and output can be described by the regression relationship between the distribution parameters (containing expansion coefficients of this expression) and the stochastic input. These regression functions can be expressed in terms of the orthogonal series expansion. Since, in the actual environment, the observed output is inevitably contaminated by the background noise, the above regression functions can not be directly employed as the models for the actual environment. Fortunately, the observed output can be given by the sum of the system output and the background noise on the basis of additivity of intensity quantity and the statistical moments of the background noise can be obtained in advance. So, the models relating the regression functions to the function of the observed output can be derived. Next, the parameters of the regression functions are determined based on the least-squares error criteria and the measure of statistical independency according to the level of non-Gaussian property of the function of the observed output. Thus, by using the regression functions obtained by the proposed identification method, the probability distribution of the output reducing the background noise can be predicted. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is confirmed experimentally too by applying it to an actual indoor-outdoor acoustic system.

  • Supporting Behavioral Decision-Making for the Resolution of the Telecommunication Service Interactions with Rule-Based System

    This paper proposes a method of supporting behavioral decision-making with a rule-based system to be used for the design stage of service specifications or service scenarios based on a state transition model. We consider telecommunication services as service scenarios of state transitions. A state transition can be described as a transition rule that is represented as the notation of an IF-THEN rule : "if < condition > then < action >. " Thus, behaviors or service scenarios are assumed to be treated as a set of IF-THEN rules in this paper. In general, an "if < condition > then < action >" rule is called a production rule, and production rules are often used to represent knowledge in expert systems. Thus, rules treated in this paper are a kind of production rule. It is still difficult to decide if behaviors are concurrent, cooperative, or exclusive as a whole system when many service scenarios are combined, even if each rule is clearly described and easy to understand. When several service scenarios are combined, it is necessary for the sub-elements of each state transition to cooperate. The method proposed in this paper consists of the following techniques: (1) decompositions of a state transition to sub-elements, (2) rule descriptions for the decomposed sub-elements and the application of rules, (3) use of conflict and cooperation strategies, and (4) support for behavioral decision-making by showing recommendations for cooperative, exclusive, or concurrent behavior. We provide examples of telecommunication services to show the effectiveness of the proposed method in an easy-to-understand manner. We also show cooperative resolution in the interactions among several services.

  • Suitable Domains for Using Ordered Attribute Trees to Impute Missing Values

    Using decision trees to fill the missing values in data has been shown experimentally to be useful in some domains. However, this is not the general case. In other domains, using decision trees for imputing missing attribute values does not outperform other methods. Trying to identify the reasons behind the success or failure of the various methods for filling missing values on different domains can be useful for deciding the technique to be used when learning concepts from a new domain with missing values. This paper presents a technique by which to approach to previous goal and presents the results of applying the technique on predicting the success or failure of a method that uses decision trees to fill the missing values in an ordered manner. Results are encouraging because the obtained decision tree is simple and it can even provide hints for further improvement on the use of decision trees to impute missing attribute values.

    Message Sequence Chart (MSC) standardized by International Telecommunication Union is a graphical and textual language for specification of concurrent systems. It has been used formally as well as informally to specify behavior of real-time systems, in particular telecommunication switching systems. Formal verification of a system specification is crucial to ensure that implementation of the system works correctly. In particular, verification methods based on finite states have been widely used in telecommunication systems design. The methods determine global system states and transitions between them (i. e. , build a global state transition graph (GSTG)), and verify the system's desired properties, such as safety and liveness, on the GSTG. In this paper, we focus on construction of GSTGs from MSC specifications. We propose action dependency graph as an intuitive description of semantics of MSC specifications and present an algorithm to translate MSC specifications to action dependency graphs as well as an algorithm to construct a global state transition graph from an action dependency graph.

    In this paper, we examine an optimal reliability assignment/redundant allocation problem formulated as a nonlinear mixed integer programming (nMIP) model which should simultaneously determine continuous and discrete decision variables. This problem is more difficult than the redundant allocation problem represented by a nonlinear integer problem (nIP). Recently, several researchers have obtained acceptable and satisfactory results by using genetic algorithms (GAs) to solve optimal reliability assignment/redundant allocation problems. For large-scale problems, however, the GA has to enumerate a vast number of feasible solutions due to the broad continuous search space. To overcome this difficulty, we propose a hybridized GA combined with a neural-network technique (NN-hGA) which is suitable for approximating optimal continuous solutions. Combining a GA with the NN technique makes it easier for the GA to solve an optimal reliability assignment/redundant allocation problem by bounding the broad continuous search space by the NN technique. In addition, the NN-hGA leads to optimal robustness and steadiness and does not affect the various initial conditions of the problems. Numerical experiments and comparisons with previous results demonstrate the efficiency of our proposed method.
