This paper describes an automatic transistor model parameter generation technique for a circuit simulator which can take device geometry into account. An 'area factor' is used to generate model parameters for different transistor shapes; however, the conventional method could not reflect the actual geometry differences other than for the emitter area. This resulted in inaccurate model parameters and such parameters were not acceptable to accurately simulate circuits for RF ICs. The proposed technique uses actually measured parameters and process data for a reference transistor and generates the individual model parameters for different shape transistors. In this technique, the parasitic resistor values are calculated and fitted in place of directly extracting them from the measured data. This ensures a better estimate. The reference transistor is made sufficiently large to neglect measurement errors in generating the parasitic capacitors. Thus, the model parameters for a very small transistor can be generated accurately. The model generating procedure has been implemented as a pre-processor to SPICE. This technique enables a fast turn around for RF IC circuit design which uses various shape transistors.

In order to evaluate multipath signal strengths reflected by mountain, a fundamental equation is derived for both cases where antenna beams are larger and smaller than a reflecting plane, assuming that reflection consists of absoption and scattering at the mountain surface. Absorption loss at a mountain surface was measured on a model propagation path by using sharp beam antennas to separately pick up the mountain-reflected signal.

An adaptive restoration algorithm is developed for binary images degraded nonadditively with flip noises. The true image is assumed to be a realization of a Markov Random Field (MRF) and the nonadditive flip noises are assumed to be statistically independent and asymmetric. Using the Expectation and Maximization (EM) method and approximating the Baum's auxiliary function, the degraded image is restored iteratively. The algorithm is implemented as follows. First, the unknown parameters and the true image are guessed or estimated roughly. Second, using the true image estimate, the Baum's auxiliary function is approximated and then the noise and MRF parameters are reestimated. To reestimate the MRF parameters the Maximum Pseudo-likelihood (MPL) method is used. Third, using the Iterated Conditional Modes (ICM) method, the true image is reestimated. The second and third steps are carried out iteratively until by some ad hoc criterion a critical point of EM algorithm is approximated. A number of simulation examples are presented which show the effectiveness of the algorithm and the parameter estimation procedures.
Research in optical microwave interaction, at its earlier stages, was spured by the desire to make an optically fed and controlled phased array antenna with monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) transmit/receive (T/R) modules. In the first part of this paper experimental results are presented demonstrating an optically fed phased array antenna operating at C-band in the 5.5 to 5.8 GHz frequency range. The present system consists of two optically fed 14 subarrays with MMIC based active T/R modules. Custom designed fiber optic links have been employed to provide distribution of data and frequency reference signals to phased array antenna. One of the challenges of the future is the development of better interfaces between electronic (microwave) and optical components, including the chip level merging of photonic and electronic components on III-V compounds. This aspect of the research is covered in the second half of the paper.

We show the design of the bandwidth and the external quantum efficiency (including the coupling efficency to a single-mode fiber) of p-i-n photodetectors. Based on their design procedures, the performance limits of both conventional surface-illuminated photodetectors and side-illuminated photodetectors are evaluated. We point out that in the ultrawide-band region, optical waveguide photodetectors have great advantages over conventional surface-illuminated photodetectors in terms of the product of the bandwidth and the external quantum efficiency. It is shown that a 100-GHz bandwidth can be achieved with little degradation of the external quantum efficiency by a multimode waveguide photodetector structure. We also present a design concept for overcoming the performance limits of solitary waveguide photodetectors by including an input tapered optical waveguide.

A coplanar-type TW electrode is analyzed for the use within a Ti:LiNbO3 optical modulator. The quasistatic analysis is developed based on the variational principle and the incremental inductance formula. The anisotropy of the LiNbO3, the effect of the SiO2 buffer layer, the overlaid conductor and the electrode thickness can be taken into consideration easily by using the extended spectral domain approach (ESDA) as the formulation procedure. It is shown numerically that the TW electrodes thickness, t, and the overlay spacing, p, are as dominant as the buffer layer thickness d, i.e., the microwave effective index and the product ΔfL is affected significantly by the electrodes thickness t and the overlay spacing, whereas the product Vπ

This paper analyzes the performance of the capacity controlled radio system under a frequency selective fading environment. This system controls the number of modulation levels according to the number of active subscribers. In the analysis, we consider the capacity controlled system either with or without adaptive equalizer. As the results of analysis, it is clarified that the system is superior to the conventional fixed capacity system, and can be considered as a good countermeasure for multi-path fading. And it is found that there exists a synergistic effect due to capacity controlling and adaptive equalizing.

The various propagation characteristics of millimeter waves in silicon rib and image guides containing the optically induced plasma region have been investigated. Phase shift and attenuation properties resulting from the presence of plasma are evaluated using the effective dielectric constant method. Experiments have been carried out to demonstrate the optical control of millimeter waves at frequencies ranging from 3350 GHz using high-resistivity silicon illuminated by a high-power Xenon arc lamp and light emitting diodes. Optical control of millimeter wave attenuation of 20dB has been confirmed for a guide of length 90 mm and plasma density of 1021/m3 with average plasma thickness of 20 µm. To increase the sensitivity of optical control, Bragg reflection filter characteristics are studied and its stop band characteristics have been calculated using the transmission line model, and confirmed experimentally. To further develop the Bragg reflection filter, a Mach-Zehnder interferometer guide with one of the arms periodically corrugated is newly proposed and its optical control performance is confirmed by experiments. Finally the field distributions of the Mach-Zehnder configuration of rib waveguides are measured by a simple optical probing technique using the focused laser spot.
High Tc superconducting (SC) active antennas made from thin films were produced by the magnetron sputtering method. The SC active antennas are found to be good for detecting 50GHz electromagnetic waves. Furthermore, the improvement of the sensitivity of the SC active antennas is demonstrated with the use of a corner reflector.

In general, the work on developing an expert system has relied on domain experts to provide all domain-specific knowledge. The method for acquiring knowledge directly from experts is inadequate in oriental medicine because it is hard to find an appropriate expert and the development cost becomes too high. Therefore, we have developed two effective methods for acquiring knowledge indirectly from sample cases. One is to refine a constructed knowledge base by using sample cases. The other is to train a neural network by using sample cases. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our methods, we have implemented two prototype systems; the Oriental Medicine Expert System (OMES) and the Oriental Medicine Neural Network (OMNN). These systems have been compared with the system with the knowledge base built directly by domain experts (OLDS). Among these systems, OMES are considered to be superior to other systems in terms of performances, development costs, and practicalness. In this paper, we present our methods, and describe our experimental and comparison results.
Compared to multi-level signature file techniques, PSF (Partitioned Signature File) technique has less processing overhead by its characteristics of a simple file organization. In a multi-processor environment, the PSF technique also has an advantage that queries can be processed in parallel effectively by allocating one or more partitions to each processor. Main point of the PSF technique is a partitioning scheme based on a key selection. In this paper, an n-BFK (n-Bounded Floating Key) partitioning scheme is proposed, in which the number of segments for a key selection is bounded by n. The cost model is developed for the performance evaluation of the proposed scheme. By performance comparison with the existing schemes, the efficiencies of the proposed scheme are shown with respect to a disk access cost, a signature reduction ratio, and an uniformity of workload.
This paper reviews the application of optical technologies to phased array antennas. The performance of the fibre transmission medium and of sources and detectors is reviewed, leading to simple expressions for transmission loss and noise performance. Both coherent and non-coherent beam forming techniques are considered. Future trends, including the use of optical amplifiers and coherent signal generation, will also be discussed.

Surface construction is known as a way to visualize volume data. Although currently used algorithms such as marching cubes have good enough quality for volume visualization, they do not ensure adequate surface topology. These algorithms work well when the surface is rather simple. While when complicated, the surface does not separate the internal and external spaces, that is, there exist some holes on the surface, or exist redundant overlaps or self-intersection. Actually, adequate surface topology is important not only for visualization but for laser stereolithography, which creates real 3D plastic objects. In the present paper, we propose a new method that produces a set of triangular patches from a given volume data. The fact that the set of patches has no holes, no redundancy, no self-intersection, and has orientable closed surface topology is shown.

The problem of two-dimensional scattering of electromagnetic waves by a grating with several strips arbitrarily oriented in one period is analyzed by means of the Wiener-Hopf technique together with the formulation using the concept of the mutual field. A formulation for the analysis of multiple scattering from the grating is based on the representation of the scattered field by a grating composed of one strip in one period. The Wiener-Hopf equations and a representation of the scattered wave are obtained. The characteristic of the sampling function is used to expand the unknown function associated with the field on the strip into a series, and then the Wiener-Hopf equations are reduced to a set of simultaneous equations. For evaluation of the convergence and the errors in the numerical results, the relative error with respect to the extrapolated value and the square error for satisfaction of the boundary condition are computed. From numerical comparison of the present method with other various methods, it is found that the present method provides us accurate results. Some numerical examples of the reflection coefficients are presented for the reflection grating and transmission gratings.

This paper describes a fiber-optic microcell radio system with a spectral delivery switch to meet traffic demands. Optical link performance is discussed from the view points of link loss and noise figure aimed at system design. The theoretical carrier-to-noise ratio (CNR) performance is shown as a function of the input electrical power of the laser and the received optical power. Improvement of dynamic range defined by both CNR and intermodulation distortion is proposed by using the frequency modulation (FM) technique. The experimental results using the proposed technique indicate that the performance is much better than that of conventional methods. Moreover, economical diversity planning delivery methods over fibers are presented. This strategy will provide more cost effective and flexible networks.

We propose a new type of Graph Rewriting Systems (GRS) that provide a theoretical foundation for using the reduction method which plays an important role on analyze network reliability. By introducing this GRS, several facts were obtained as follows: (1) We clarified the reduction methods of network reliability analysis in the theoretical framework of GRS. (2) In the framework of GRS, we clarified the significance of the completeness in the reduction methods. (3) A procedure of recognizing complete systems from only given rewriting rules was shown. Specially the procedure (3) is given by introducing a boundary graph (B-Graph). Finally an application of GRS to network reliability analysis is shown.

An optical On-Off Keyed (OOK) pulse is often stretched in dispersive channels, thus producing intersymbol interference (ISI) and degrading the performance. In this paper, error probability is presented for a convolutionally encoded optical OOK channels with ISI. Both ISI-matched and ISI-mismatched decoders are taken into account in the error probability analysis. The encoded optical OOK signal is received by Avalanche Photo Diode (APD) and the number of APD output photo-electrons is counted for soft decision Viterbi decoding. Error probability is derived for a 3-bit and an ideal soft decision schemes in ISI-mismatched decoder and for an ideal soft decision scheme in ISI-matched decoder. Numerical results demonstrate the effects of mismatching or 3-bit soft decision scheme. Some computer simulations are carried out to confirm the validity of the analysis.

Complex filters are used to synthesize real filters in digital signal processing, but few in analog one. In this paper, we propose a leapfrog synthesis of complex analog filters. By shifting frequency response of an LCR network along the ω-axis, we have a complex filter with imaginary resistances, which is called an "LCRRi filter." The complex resonator is then used to simulate series- or parallel-arms of the LCRRi filter. We analyze nonideal properties of the complex resonator due to finite gain-bandwidth product of operational amplifiers and propose a compensation method to put a pole on correct location. Experimental results show good performance of the proposed method.

We propose a direct-sequence spread-spectrum multi-access (DS/SSMA) receiver that incorporates multipath diversity combining and multistage co-channel interference (CCI) cancellation. This receiver structure which is more resistant to the near/far problem essentially removes more and more of the CCI with each successive cancellation stage. With the assumption that perfect channel estimates have been obtained, we analyze the bit error rate (BER) performance of this system when received powers are unequal. Results show that the BER can approach that of a single-user case as the number of CCI cancellation stages increases.

A new type of analog-to-digital (A/D) converter is introduced. The structure is based on a magnitude-preserving quadrature mirror filter (QMF) bank where the analysis bank is composed on IIR switched-capacitor (SC) filters. The analog output samples of the analysis filters are converted into digital form using individual A/D converters and combined by an IIR digital filter synthesis filter bank. This A/D converter is useful in applications where only the magnitude of the spectrum of the analog signal needs to be preserved. The structure incorporates the advantages of sub-band coding and reduces considerably the effect of mismatches among the sub-band A/D converters. In addition, the proposed scheme leads to an increase in the conversion speed by a factor of M when an M-channel QMF bank is used. An illustrative example verifying the good performance of the proposed approach is included.
